①Art has different kinds of forms. Have you ever seen a painting made of sugar? Sugar painting is a painting made of sugar. It’s the sugar for us to taste, and the painting for us to admire. The development of the sugar painting art is a long process (过程), and every change in the form of sugar painting reflects the changes in the social life, and it is also a reflection of historical and cultural customs.
②Since the Warring States Period, the ancient people loved sweets and developed methods of producing sugar. In the Tang Dynasty, there was huge development in the technology of sugar making. And sugar, the precious product once only served to the emperors and princes, also went into people’s homes. With the cultural and economic (经济的) development of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness. In the Ming Dynasty, some people added pictures with good luck into the bowl of sugar, and sugar painting appeared.
③Sugar painting is different from normal painting. It needs boiling syrup (熬糖浆) and painting. It seems simple, but it is extremely challenging to make. Sugar painters use syrup as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth table as the “paper”. To make syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since syrup may become hard if it cools, the painters have to produce the work in a very short time. They move the spoon full of syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting is done.
④However, it’s a pity that this folk art is dying recently. The sugar painting that used to be rich in shapes has become poorer and poorer because of fewer needs. What’s worse, few people seem to be willing to pass on the art except those aging sugar painters.
⑤For most people, painting is a kind of art and difficult to understand. However, sugar painting has pulled the art down into people’s daily lives. Through it, we may see the spiritual support of the ancient people across centuries. Now, sugar painting has been listed as an intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) in China.

A. The method of making sugar paintings. B. The history of making sugar paintings.

C. To protect the spoon and the table. D. To reduce people’s waiting time.

A. Sugar painting is popular in people’s daily lives.

Artificial intelligence (AI) can do many different things. From controlling the lights in our homes to helping us order pizzas, it seems there aren’t many more uses for AI than we already have. However, can AI make music like human beings?
Thanks to a team of Swiss scientists, AI may soon be able to come up with music especially for us. Researchers at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne (EPFL) in Switzerland have created a computer algorithm (算法), the “Deep Artificial Composer” (DAC), which can create original music all by itself.
Florian Colombo, an EPFL scientist who helped create the DAC, said that AI could produce complete melodies (旋律), with a beginning and an end.
At present, the DAC is only able to produce several pieces of traditional Irish folk music, but it’s hoped that it will be able to create songs based on any type of music in the end.
To “teach” the DAC, the scientists trained it to “listen” to over 2,000 different folk songs. Based on this input (输入), the AI taught itself how to compose music, from getting the pitch (高音) and timing right, to choosing the right notes.
This process is still in its early stages, with the DAC still not producing perfect results, but Colombo told AFP that the AI’s music is still “quite pleasant to listen to.”
While the idea sounds very hopeful, we shouldn’t expect the DAC to replace real-life composers any time soon. According to Colombo, the system was designed to produce only simple melodies. So far, it can only create songs based on a single instrument.
Colombo said that his purpose in creating the DAC was to help people create their own music, not to have it made for them. His exciting new ideas came from Austrian composer Wolfgang Mozart. It’s said that he used to throw dice (掷骰子) to help him pick which notes to use when making new music.
“A good composer with creative ideas will never be replaced by an algorithm.” Colombo told AFP.

54 What does the underlined word “itself” refer to?
A. A robot. B. The EPFL. C. A composer. D. The DAC.
55. According to the passage, we can infer that the scientists _________.
A. expect the DAC to replace good composers B. are amazed at the melodies made by the DAC
C. are not satisfied with the system of the DAC D. have achieved their purpose of creating the DAC
56. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. Colombo Helped Create the DAC B. AI Composers VS Human Composers
C. AI—A Good Assistant for Composers D. The DAC Changes the Way of Composing

Ludwig van Beethoven was one of the greatest composers of all time. He was born in 1770 in Bonn, Germany. When he was 4 years old, his father started teaching him to play the piano. Later, Beethoven took lessons from other teachers. He also learned to play the violin and the organ (管风琴) when he was very young. In 1787, when Beethoven was 17, he visited Vienna, Austria. There, he played for a famous musician named Mozart. Beethoven moved to Vienna in 1792 to study with another famous musician, Haydn. Beethoven lived in Vienna the rest of his life.
Beethoven played music that other people had written. But he also liked to improvise (即兴创作). Beethoven would ask someone to play a few notes on a piano. Then he’d sit down and play those same few notes and add more. Soon, he would create a whole new tune.
As a composer, Beethoven was a great talent. He liked to write, or compose, his own music. He heard music in his head. Then he wrote the songs down on paper. While writing, Beethoven played his songs on the piano to hear how they sounded. He would rewrite his music over and over. Finally, he would be pleased with his new music.
Around 1798, Beethoven started going deaf. At first, he had trouble hearing people talk. Later, he couldn’t hear his own music. By 1820, Beethoven was totally deaf. Though he couldn’t hear, Beethoven kept playing music. He even kept composing! When Beethoven composed, he “heard” the tunes in his mind. Then he wrote them down. How did Beethoven hear music in his head? Softly sing aloud a song you know well, like Mary Had a Little Lamb. As you sing, you can hear the song with your ears. Now silently sing the same song to yourself in your mind. Can you hear how it sounds inside your head?
Beethoven composed his most famous pieces of music after he was deaf. These pieces include Moonlight Sonata and his Symphony (《交响乐》) No.5 and Symphony No.9. His works connected the classical age of Western music to the later romantic age.

With the cultural and economic (经济) development of the Song and Yuan Dynasties, people became less interested in only tasting sweetness.
49. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. The method of making sugar paintings. B. The history of making sugar paintings.
C. The difficulty of making sugar paintings. D. The development of making sugar paintings.

A. Sugar painting is popular in people’s daily lives.
B. Sugar painting is dying and it is worrying recently.

53. What can be learned from the first two paragraphs?
A. AI has been used in more places than we already know.
B. AI has already composed music for people.
C. DAC was created by a group of scientists in Switzerland.
D. DAC was refused by some composers.
54. What does the underlined word “itself” refer to?
A. A robot. B. The EPFL. C. A composer. D. The DAC.
55. According to the passage we can infer that the scientists _________.
A. expect the DAC to replace good composers B. are amazed at the melodies made by the DAC
C. are not satisfied with the system of the DAC D. have achieved their purpose of creating the DAC
