Passage 2 (C 篇 健康科普)
With temperatures rising nationwide, various sun-protective gadgets have become popular, including sun-proof clothing, wide-brimmed hats, UV-blocking masks and ice sleeves. However, experts point out that scientific sun protection does not mean completely staying away from sunlight. Instead, it requires a balanced strategy of avoidance, physical blocking and reasonable sunscreen use.
Dermatologists and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend the classic ABC Rule for effective sun protection. The letter A stands for Avoid. From 10 am to 4 pm, ultraviolet (UV) radiation reaches its peak. The most efficient way to prevent sun damage is to reduce outdoor activities or stay indoors during this period.
B refers to Block, or physical sun protection, which is considered the safest method. When choosing protective gear, people should pay attention to professional indicators. Qualified sun-proof clothes must have a UPF value above 40 with a UVA transmittance below 5 percent. For hats, wide-brimmed designs are preferred to cover the face, neck and ears. Professional sunglasses marked UV400 can protect eyes and surrounding skin effectively. Ordinary thin T-shirts and lace umbrellas offer almost no defense against UV rays.
C represents Cream, namely chemical or physical sunscreen. Physical sunscreen contains minerals like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which reflect UV light and suit sensitive skin and children. Chemical sunscreen absorbs ultraviolet radiation and turns it into heat, fitting oily skin better. Most modern sunscreens combine both mechanisms. For daily commutes, products with SPF30 and PA++ are sufficient; for outdoor activities, SPF50 and PA++++ are required. Experts also warn that sunscreen needs to be reapplied every two hours after sweating.
Nevertheless, total avoidance of sunlight is also harmful. Proper sun exposure benefits physical health. UVB rays help the body produce vitamin D, promoting calcium absorption. Long-term lack of sunlight may lead to osteoporosis, low mood and poor sleep.
Experts suggest safe sun exposure during mild hours, either before 9 am or after 4 pm. People can expose their limbs for 10 to 20 minutes to meet the body’s need for vitamin D. A practical shadow rule can also guide people: if one’s shadow is longer than their height, the UV level is safe; if shorter, strong sun protection is necessary.
Overdoing sun protection carries hidden risks as well. Covering tightly in high temperatures may cause skin problems like rashes and acne, or even deadly heatstroke. By contrast, completely skipping protection under burning sun will result in sunburn, skin aging and an increased risk of skin cancer. Ultimately, sun protection is never an either-or choice. Balanced and scientific exposure is the key to long-term health.
5. What does the ABC Rule suggest about sun protection?
A. Staying indoors all day is unnecessary and harmful.
B. Physical blocking is the safest protective method.
C. Chemical sunscreen works better for children’s skin.
D. Ordinary T-shirts can provide basic UV protection.
6. What is the standard of qualified sun-proof clothing?
A. It is thick enough to block wind. B. Its UPF value is over 40.
C. It is made of lace materials. D. It has colorful patterns.
7. What benefit can proper sunlight exposure bring?
A. Speeding up skin aging.
B. Curing existing osteoporosis.
C. Promoting the production of vitamin D.
D. Preventing daily mood changes.
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Risks of Modern Sun-protective Gadgets

Passage 3 (C 篇 自然科普新闻)
The Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area has dismissed a viral online video claiming that its well-known turquoise lakes are artificially dyed, labeling the online footage completely false. The official statement issued by the administration pointed out that such misleading rumors damage the scenic spot’s public image.
The administration clarified that the shooting location shown in the video is not Jiuzhaigou at all. As a UNESCO World Natural Heritage site and World Biosphere Reserve, Jiuzhaigou’s colorful lakes rely purely on natural geological and optical effects, with no artificial pigments involved.
Sun Geng, a researcher from the Chengdu Institute of Biology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, gave a professional scientific explanation. The unique blue-green shade of the lake water comes from three combined factors: physical, chemical and biological ones.
Physically, the alpine lakes feature extremely clean water with little suspended matter or plankton, leading to extraordinary transparency. Among all wavelengths of sunlight, long-wave red and orange light gets absorbed by water, while short-wave blue and purple light scatters widely, giving the lakes a natural blue tone.
Chemically, calcium, magnesium and bicarbonate ions in the water form tiny travertine particles ranging from 0.1 to 0.45 microns. These micro-particles strongly scatter blue-green light and deepen the bright color of the water.
Biologically, algae and other underwater creatures reflect light differently, creating rich color layers in the lakes. Besides, water depth, seasonal shifts, weather and visitors’ viewing angles all lead to varying shades of blue and green, forming Jiuzhaigou’s magical changeable waterscape.
The scenic area administration reminded netizens not to create or spread false online rumors that ruin the reputation of world natural heritage sites. Audiences should carefully judge the truth of short-video information, refuse to believe or pass on rumors, and protect a clean online environment. Anyone curious about the landscape’s scientific principles can refer to official popular science releases.
9. What did the Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area say about the viral video?
A. It was filmed inside Jiuzhaigou scenic spot.
B. The claim of dyed lakes in the video is untrue.
C. It helps more visitors know the lake’s beauty.
D. It records the real chemical changes of lake water.
10. What makes the lake water appear blue physically?
A. Micro travertine particles in the water.
B. Light reflection of underwater algae.
C. The scattering of short-wave blue and purple light.
D. Abundant calcium and magnesium ions in streams.
11. Which factor is NOT mentioned to affect the lakes’ color shades?
A. Water depth. B. Tourist number. C. Weather conditions. D. Different viewing angles.
12. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To introduce Jiuzhaigou’s status as world natural heritage.
B. To explain the scientific causes of Jiuzhaigou’s colored lakes and refute online rumors.
C. To call on scientists to carry out more research on alpine lakes.
D. To warn tourists against damaging the natural environment in scenic spots.
Passage 4 (D 篇 社科思辨)
Cast your mind back to your daily morning routine. Right after waking up, most people reach for their smartphones to unlock the screen with their eyes. They look in the mirror, prepare themselves for the day, and interact with family or colleagues. Throughout all these ordinary activities, one thing remains central: the human face.
Facial features not only serve as basic identification tools for passports and Face ID, but also profoundly shape social judgments. People’s faces influence others’ trust, attraction, occupational evaluation, and even jury decisions in criminal cases.
In a new book, cultural historian Fay Bound-Alberti explores the rich social meanings of human faces. She draws on anthropology, criminology, medical imaging and art portraiture across thousands of years to argue that although faces are physically made of skin, bone and muscle, people’s understanding and judgment of faces are shaped by cultural beliefs, languages and social environments. The scholar’s research interest comes partly from her personal experience of prosopagnosia, commonly known as “face blindness”, a neurological disorder that makes it hard for her to recognize even close relatives.
Throughout history, humans have long judged others by facial appearances. Ancient Greek philosopher Pythagoras was said to select students based on their facial intelligence. Influenced by Euclid’s theory of the golden ratio, ancient people firmly believed that those with ill-proportioned facial features were immoral or untrustworthy. Such beliefs once led to extreme punishment systems in ancient Greece, Rome and Persia, where criminals were punished with facial mutilation, including cut noses, removed ears and branded faces. Even today, the stereotype linking strange facial features with evil characters remains common, as shown by scarred or disfigured villains in traditional movies.
For a long time, people were vaguely aware of their own looks without clear self-recognition. In medieval times, personal identity depended on social roles, family backgrounds and religious faith rather than individual facial appearances. The concept of “facehood” — the combination of personal individuality and outer facial features — was gradually formed during the Renaissance. The booming portraiture art at that time shifted its focus from social status to individual personalities, making the face a window into one’s inner world.
With the popularity of cheap mirrors and photography, facial obsession became increasingly serious. Since the appearance of photography technology, scientists including Darwin began to record and classify human facial expressions. However, the historical shift from ignoring faces to overvaluing facial appearance also brings hidden social prejudices that still influence modern society.
13. Why does Fay Bound-Alberti focus her research on human faces?
A. She aims to cure her neurological disease.
B. Her personal experience contributes to her interest.
C. She wants to change modern facial prejudices.
D. She studies anthropology and criminology professionally.
14. What can we learn about ancient facial beliefs?
A. The golden ratio was widely used in criminal trials.
B. Movie villains were usually born with strange faces.
C. Facial features were linked to people’s moral quality.
D. Ancient punishments mainly focused on body injury.
15. What does the underlined word “facehood” in Paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Judging people’s status by their family backgrounds.
B. Recognizing personal inner traits through facial features.
C. The traditional way of painting portraits in medieval times.
D. The fixed stereotype towards people’s appearances.
16. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Historical Evolution and Social Power of Faces
B. How Facial Blindness Influences Scientific Research
C. The Renaissance Art That Reshaped Human History
D. Why Modern Society Overvalues Facial Appearance
