I believe this topic holds significant relevance in today’s interconnected world. While competition can drive individual achievement, cooperation fosters collective progress and harmony. In academic, professional, and social settings, the ability to work together often leads to more sustainable and inclusive outcomes. By debating this theme, we can explore how collaborative mindsets contribute to problem-solving and community building as well as a valuable perspective of competition. I believe that this topic, which is essential for our personal future development, is the best choice for the contest. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 47.     She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” Timmy’s eyes widened in surprise and excitement. He jumped out of bed and hugged his mom tightly. “Really, Mom? That’s amazing!” They spent the morning planning all the things they would do together. They decided to go to the zoo first. As they drove to the zoo, Timmy chatted non-stop, his face glowing with happiness. Upon arrival, they rushed towards the panda enclosure, where they watched in awe as the cute pandas munched on bamboo. Timmy laughed out loud when one panda rolled over like a clumsy ball. Mrs. Thompson photographed these precious moments, feeling a sense of contentment she hadn’t experienced in a long time.      However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. It was one of her most important clients. The client had an urgent question about a house they were interested in buying. Mrs. Thompson hesitated for a moment. Looking at Timmy’s excited face, she made a choice. She silenced her phone and put it back in her bag. She turned to Timmy and said, “Nothing is more important than this time with you, Timmy.” They spent the rest of the day at the zoo, exploring every corner, and even had a picnic lunch on the grass. By the end of the day, both Timmy and Mrs. Thompson were tired but filled with joy. A A Short Trip in the NetherlandsDay 1 — Arrival in Haarlem Fly to Amsterdam, and then transfer to the Dutch town of Haarlem, your home during your four-day stay. All that he did was to watch Sam and other boys play. He usually went with them to the playground. When they ran off to play, he would sit under a tree and read storybooks. Books became his best friends. The reading made him successful in all the exams. He always stood first in the class. Sam was tall and athletic. He spent most of his time running, swimming or riding bicycles. He was an extremely good player in every game. He was a member of the school’s football team and basketball team. The PE teacher thought he would make it big in the game when he grew up. One day, the two friends went for a walk. Eric got tired soon. “I have no strength. What is the use of all this knowledge, if I am not healthy? I would give away all my knowledge if I could be half as healthy and strong as you, ” said Eric. Sam was surprised and replied, “So you are not happy with yourself too? I always wished I could have done as well as you did in the studies. I even thought I could have given away my sporting skills for better grades in those exams.” The two friends looked at each other and cried out at the same time, “The grass looks greener on the other side of the hill. ” 4.What did Eric usually do when he went to the playground with Sam? C.Grass usually appears greener in faraway places. D.We always want something better and feel unhappy. C With the fractious (易怒的) state of global politics, it is little wonder that one reader has written in to say they are overwhelmed by bad news. “I know it’s bad for my mood, but I can’t stop myself reading about the disasters unfolding,” she says. “How can I find mental peace when there’s so much wrong in the world?” It is not rare. Doomscrolling is a common habit caused by the human brain’s preference for negative information. When presented with various headlines, our attention naturally fixes on the most depressing or frightening. One recent study found that each negative word in a headline adds 2.3 per cent to the average click through rate. Doomscrolling appears especially common in people with low “tolerance of uncertainty” — those who want a predictable future they can control. Our negativity preference might have served us well in the past, when our survival depended on our capacity to understand and respond to threats. But it may be unfit in the 21st century, when the dangers of the world are sent onto our devices’ screens 24 hours a day. Doomscrolling has been linked to a higher risk of depression, and, in some people, too much media consumption about bad news events can produce the symptoms of PTSD (创伤后应激障碍). If you find your news consumption damaging your well-being, you might choose to temporarily disengage from your feeds, or at least limit your exposure to a fixed period. In cognitive behavioural therapy (治疗) for anxiety, clients are often told to assign themselves a limited “worry time” each day, after which they are encouraged to look for distraction. The chance to limit such anxious reflection to a fixed period appears to be more effective than simply telling someone not to worry at all. You might also make a conscious effort to find items that restore your faith in humanity. A recent study by psychologists Kathryn Buchanan and Gillian Sandstrom asked people to watch films about the Manchester Arena bombing that happened in May 2017. They found that showing some examples of brave and hopeful responses to the attacks helped to reduce participants’ depression. They were more likely to respond positively to statements such as “people are basically good” and “the way our society works makes sense”, for instance. Of course, we shouldn’t aim to get rid of every troubling event so that we no longer feel any fear. But by strengthening our toughness, we may become more motivated to take positive action. A follow-up study by Buchanan and Sandstrom found that people who watched others’ kindness were more willing to act pro-socially (亲社会地) themselves. The world may be a dark place, but we can choose to look for the light. 8.Why are some people trapped in the habit of “doomscrolling”? A.Because people enjoy feeling depressed or frightened. B.Because the human brain is naturally drawn to negative information. C.Because modern news headlines are written to be more attractive. D.Because people have too much free time to browse the internet. 9.What negative effect is linked to doomscrolling according to the text? A.Improved ability to handle uncertainty. B.A stronger desire to control the future. C.Higher risk of depression and PTSD-like symptoms. D.Increased trust in society and other people. 10.According to the author, how can we reduce the anxiety caused by doomscrolling? A.Stop reading news completely and forever. B.Use a fixed “worry time” and then seek distraction. C.Only watch news that includes positive stories. D.Discuss your worries with a therapist every day. 11.What is the purpose of this article? A.People should avoid all news to protect their mental health. B.Despite the bad news, we can choose strategies to stay hopeful. C.Negative news is more accurate and deserves more attention. D.The only solution to doomscrolling is to increase our tolerance. D Listening to favorite songs could reduce people’s pain, according to a new study published in the journal Frontiers in Pain Research. The small study invited 63 young adults to bring two of their favorite songs and the only requirement was that they needed to be at least 3 minutes and 20 seconds long. One selection was their favorite music of all time, and the other was the song they would bring with them on a desert island. The researchers also had the young adults pick one of seven songs that the team considered relaxing and were unfamiliar to the study participants (参与者). Each person joined a 7-minute experiment where they were guided to stare at a monitor screen while listening to their favorite music, one of the seven relaxing instrumental songs (each of which lasted for 6 minutes and 40 seconds), or a mixture of both songs and the relaxing song chosen. The mixed music was a noisy mixture of all three songs, cut into parts so that they lacked their original structure. One 7-minute experiment had people sitting in silence. All the while, the researchers stuck a hot object-similar to the pain of a boiling hot teacup on your skin-to the participants’ left inner forearms. When rating their experiences, people were more likely to report feeling less pain when listening to their favorite songs compared with hearing the unfamiliar relaxing song or silence. The mixed songs did not reduce pain either, which the authors suggested was evidence of music being more than a distraction (分散注意力) from an unpleasant experience. After interviewing the participants about the song they brought and their rating of pain, the researchers found people who listened to bittersweet and touching songs felt less pain than when they listened to songs with calming or cheerful themes. 12.What do we know about the music used in the experiment? A.The mixed music was similar to the original in structure. B.The seven songs chosen were strange to the participants. C.The participants’ favorite songs had the same context. D.All the music was played on the monitor screen. 13.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 3? A.How long the participants listened to songs. B.Why various songs were listened to. C.How different songs reduced pain. D.How the experiment was carried out. 14.Which music could reduce pain most according to the experiment? A.Songs with calming themes. B.Unfamiliar relaxing songs. C.Bittersweet and moving songs. D.A mixture of different songs. 15.What’s the purpose of the article? A.To introduce the effect of music on people’s feeling B.To recommend different kinds of songs. C.To explain why music can cure diseases D.To stress people’s preference for music. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) Once you finally get home after dropping your teen off at college, you will be hit by the realization that this is for real. His friends were playing in the park across the road, their laughter filling the air, but Timmy didn’t join them. He was waiting for his mom to come home. Timmy’s mom, Mrs. Thompson, was a hard-working real estate agent (房地产经纪人). She was constantly on the go, showing houses to clients, attending meetings, and working late into the night. Most days, Timmy only saw her in the early morning rush before school or briefly in the evening when she was too tired to do much more than give him a quick hug. That day, when Mrs. Thompson finally pulled up in her car, she noticed Timmy’s sad expression. As she got out of the car, Timmy ran up to her, his eyes lighting up for a moment. “Mom, can we play a game today? Like we used to?” he asked hopefully. Mrs. Thompson looked at her watch and sighed. “Not today, honey. I have so much work to do. Maybe tomorrow.” Timmy’s shoulders slumped, and he quietly walked back to the steps. That evening, as Mrs. Thompson sat at her desk, going through piles of paperwork, she couldn’t get Timmy’s disappointed face out of her mind. She realized that she had been so focused on her career that she was missing out on her son’s childhood. After much thought, she made a decision. She would take some time off work to be with Timmy. The next morning, Mrs. Thompson called her boss and explained the situation. To her relief, her boss was understanding and gave her a week off. She then went to Timmy’s room with a big smile on her face. 注意: (1)续写词数应为150左右; (2)请按如下格式在答题纸相应位置作答。 She said, “Timmy, I’m going to take a whole week off work, just for us!” ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ However, just as they were playing, Mrs. Thompson’s phone rang. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
