Costa Rica has risen sharply to rank fourth, becoming the first Latin American country to enter the top five in the report’s 14-year history. Finland tops the list for nine times in a decade. Its complete social welfare, sound education and healthcare systems as well as high social trust bring residents strong security and happiness. Tourists had better enjoy quiet winter views and watch the Northern Lights rather than arrange tight travel plans. Iceland comes second, ranking first in social support. People here can easily get help when in trouble. Visitors are advised to get close to nature and taste fresh local seafood. Denmark takes third place. Its happiness roots in social trust and people’s joint efforts for public good. Travelers can enjoy local festivals and amazing bird migration views in autumn. Costa Rica wins people’s hearts with free life choices and warm community atmosphere, which is different from Nordic nations. Chatting with locals and hiking are ideal ways to feel local peace. Sweden ranks fifth. It features easy access to nature and harmonious social relations. Summer is the best time to experience its traditional culture and city scenery. 1. What is the big surprise mentioned in the first paragraph? A. Nordic countries no longer dominate the report B. A Latin American country came in the top five C. Finland fails to stay in the first place as before D. More Asian countries appear in the ranking 2. What makes Finnish people feel happy most? A. Sound welfare and social trust B. Various outdoor activities C. Amazing natural scenery D. Convenient traffic 3. Who is the text mainly intended for? A. Environmental researchers B. Health experts C. History lovers D. Potential travelers B As a six-year-old Canadian schoolboy, Ryan had trouble believing the words spoken by his teacher that many people in developing African countries couldn’t get enough clean water. He looked across the classroom at the drinking fountain. It was very close — only ten steps away. So, Ryan asked himself, “Why do some African children have to walk ten kilometres to get water every day? And why is the water so dirty that it makes them sick?” Young Ryan thought, “Life is easy for me, but hard for those people. Why don’t I help?” At first, his plan was to earn money to build a single well somewhere in Africa. He cleaned windows and did gardening for his family and neighbours. He soon reached his first target of $70, but when he gave the money to a charity, he was told that it actually cost $2,000 to build a well. Seventy dollars was only enough for a hand pump. Ryan understood that a hand pump wouldn’t help the children. What they needed was a well dug near their homes. Two thousand dollars was a lot of money, but Ryan didn’t give up. He was determined to help other children have clean water. He started to ask for help from his classmates and neighbours and persuaded them to donate money. At the same time, a friend of Ryan’s mother helped make his story go public. After several months, Ryan had raised the $2,000, with which a well was built near a primary school in Uganda. The children at the school no longer needed to walk for hours to get water. They were grateful to him and invited him to visit. In Uganda, Ryan at last saw the finished well with his own eyes. Later, Ryan’s experience led him to set up a foundation to encourage more people to help. Many inspired people gave him their support. Ryan’s foundation continues to attract support from more and more people, so the work of building more wells can go on. Today, over 800,000 people in 16 countries across Africa have benefited from the life-changing gift of clean, safe water. Now, as an adult, Ryan says that the question to ask is not “Why don’t I help?”, but “How can I help today?”. This insight grew from the determined attitude of a six-year-old boy who had the courage and perseverance to make his dream a reality. 4. What was Ryan’s plan when he first decided to help? A. To clean the drinking fountain in his classroom. B. To earn money to build a single well in Africa. C. To persuade his classmates to do gardening. D. To raise $2,000 for a hand pump. 5. Which of the following is the correct time order of Ryan’s experiences? ①Ryan raised $2,000 and built a well in Uganda. ②Ryan set up a foundation to encourage more people to help. ③Ryan was told a well cost $2,000 instead of $70. ④Ryan earned $70 by doing housework for his family and neighbours. A. ④③①② B. ③④①② C. ④①③② D. ③①④② 6. What does Ryan’s adult insight imply? A. People should think more about others’ difficulties. B. It’s easier to help others when you are an adult. C. Everyone should take action to help others actively. D. Childhood dreams are hard to realize without perseverance. 7. Which of following sayings best matches the story? A. Strike while the iron is hot. B. A good turn deserves another. C. Where there is a will, there is a way. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed. C Have you ever asked yourself why people often have trouble learning English? I hadn’t, until one day my five-year-old son asked me whether there was ham in a hamburger. There isn’t. This made me realize that there’s no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. This got me thinking how English can be a crazy language to learn. For example, when we are traveling we say that we are in the car or the taxi, but on the train or bus! While we’re doing all this traveling, we can get seasick at sea, airsick in the air and carsick in a car, but we don’t get homesick when we get back home. And speaking of home, why aren’t homework and housework the same thing? If harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same? If “indirect” is the opposite of “direct”, why “indifferent” is not the opposite of “different” and why do “invaluable” and “valuable” both mean being of great value? Even the smallest of words can be confusing. When you see the capitalized “WHO” in a medical report, do you read it as the “who” in “Who’s that?” What about “IT” and “US”? You also have to wonder at the unique madness of a language in which a house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out, and in which an alarm is only heard once it goes off! English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race. That is why when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And that is why when I wind up my watch, it starts, but when I wind up this passage, it ends. 8. Why does the author mention his five-year-old son’s question at the beginning? A. To prove kids are curious about food. B. To introduce the topic that English is confusing. C. To explain the origin of English words. D. To show children learn English easily. 9. According to paragraph 3, which pair of words has opposite meanings? A. shameless and shameful. B. different and indifferent. C. harmless and harmful. D. valuable and invaluable. 10. What does the underlined phrase “goes off” most probably mean? A. stops working B. breaks down C. disappears D. makes a sound 11. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the passage? A. To show that English is confusing but creative. B. To tell us that English is very difficult to learn. C. To give advice on how to learn English. D. To explain how English was created. D Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year. This annual movement is called migration. They migrate to find food, seek a partner, or in search of warmer weather. One of the most wonderful migrations in nature is that of the North American monarch butterfly Every autumn, millions of these beautiful insects with fine black and orange wings begin a long and difficult journey. Somehow they manage to travel around 4,000 kilometres south and find their way to California or Mexico. However, until recently no one knew how they did this. A team of scientists led by Professor Eli Shlizerman at the University of Washington has now found the answer. They have found out that the monarch is able to tell the time of day. It uses its eyes to measure the position of the sun. These two pieces of information — the time of day and the point where the sun is in the sky — allow the butterfly to determine the way to go. Eventually, it manages to reach the places where it will spend the winter. The solution to the mystery of the monarch’s amazing ability comes at a time when it is in serious trouble. Its population has crashed by as much as 90 per cent in the last few years. Sadly, human activity is the main reason why the number of monarch butterflies is falling. In many of the places where the butterfly can be found, people are destroying the natural environment. They cut down trees and use chemicals that kill the plants that monarch caterpillars eat. The research on the monarch’s behaviour has however led to a greater awareness of this creature. People have been working together to record its migration and make sure that there are enough plants for it to feed on. If this works, there may come a time when the number of monarch butterflies increases once again. The more we know about this lovely creature, the greater the chance it will survive and keep its place in the natural world for a long time to come. 12. Why do many animals migrate every year? A. To avoid certain human activities B. To escape from natural enemies C. To find safer places to produce young D. To look for food, mates or warmer weather 13. What helps monarch butterflies figure out their moving direction? A. Time of day and the sun’s position B. The seasons and wind direction C. The temperature and geographical location D. The colour of plants and local weather 14. What is the author’s attitude towards the future of monarch butterflies? A. Doubtful B. Hopeful C. Unconcerned D. Negative 15. What is the best title for the passage? A. Migration of Animals B. Research on Animals C. Journey of the Monarch D. Protection for Monarch Tourism can be both good and bad. Having practiced paper-cutting for decades, she was extremely skilled at this traditional folk art. For as long as Lily could remember, grandma would create delicate paper cuts of flowers, animals and festive patterns for every traditional festival, faithfully passing on this precious old custom. Growing up in a modern city, Lily was deeply influenced by fashionable urban culture. She was crazy about trendy pop music and creative digital designs, which filled her spare time. In her eyes, traditional paper cutting was old-fashioned and totally meaningless in modern life. Therefore, she always turned down grandma’s kind invitation to learn the craft without hesitation. One cold winter, Lily’s school decided to hold a Cultural Heritage Fair Every student was assigned a special task: to design and present a work that could perfectly represent their unique family traditional culture. Upon hearing the news, grandma was overjoyed. She volunteered to teach Lily to cut a vivid red tiger, a symbol of luck and vitality for the upcoming Spring Festival. Contrary to grandma’s expectation, Lily refused coldly, stubbornly believing the ancient craft was completely out of date. Late that night, soft and regular sounds of scissors cutting paper woke Lily up. Filled with curiosity, she tiptoed quietly to the living room. Beneath the warm yellow lamp, grandma sat alone on the sofa, devoting herself entirely to paper-cutting. Her aged but flexible fingers moved gently and skillfully across the red paper. Soon, a lively red tiger took shape, vivid and adorable. Gazing at her work affectionately, grandma whispered to herself, “Paper cuts are more than simple decorations. They carry our sincere wishes for health, peace and family reunion, which are the most priceless traditional treasures of our family.” Hearing the gentle words, Lily froze instantly. A wave of warmth flooded her heart, and she felt profound shame for her ignorant and rude attitude towards the precious folk art. Paragraph 1: Lily walked over and asked grandma if she could learn to make the paper cut tiger together. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: At the Cultural Heritage Fair, Lily’s paper cut tiger became a big surprise to everyone. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 长治市2025-2026学年度高一年级期末质量监测 英 语 (考试时间120分钟,本试卷满分150分) 注意事项: 1. 1.
