One evening in California, while helping my daughter, Julianna, prepare for a yard sale, I stepped carelessly between the wooden boards and felt the floor give way beneath me. I had grown used to that sinking feeling ever since losing my wife, Amy, to cancer in 2024-the sight of an old cup could suddenly make my world fall apart. But this time, I was falling for real. Julianna shouted, “Daddy, get out now!” After a hard struggle, I finally pulled myself out.
As I walked downstairs, I thought about how differently Amy would have dealt with things. She had always been the family’s guide — calm and dependable — while I was careless and always depended on her to keep my life in order. After she was gone, I tried to become a focused solo parent, yet I kept making mistakes. I forgot rubbish night until it attracted huge wild animals; I burned carrots until smoke filled the kitchen; I even let our WiFi get disconnected, and Julianna asked, “You’re pretty bad at this, aren’t you?”
Her words made me think. That was when I began to understand that bravery — the kind Amy had always shown — was not about avoiding mistakes, but about facing them when it mattered most.
The morning after I fell, I discovered that someone had covered Julianna’s yard sale signs with red tape (胶带). Without thinking twice, I walked down the street and caught a young man who told me he did it for “friendly competition”, but this time I stood my ground. To my surprise, people nearby gathered and spoke ill of him. When I told Julianna what happened, she laughed and said, “Now you’re getting embarrassing.” But I didn’t mind. For the first time, I understood that bravery did not belong only to my wife — It had been inside me all along. This has been the hardest year of my life, but I am learning that laughter is how we tell ourselves we might get through this together.

Recent investigations have shown a concerning issue in our everyday diet: certain foods and supplements (补品) may contain unsafe levels of lead (铅), a harmful heavy metal. These findings push people to pay closer attention to what they eat and drink.
Though lead comes into being naturally in the environment, it can cause side effects. Experts warn that even a little can accumulate in the body over time. “We don’t want to add more lead,” said Dr. Cohen of Harvard Medical School. He advises people to keep lead exposure (接触) as low as possible by choosing healthy foods and being careful with supplements, which can be a hidden source of lead.
Health organizations warn that lead is particularly dangerous for children, as it can damage the developing brain and nervous system and slow growth, leading to learning difficulties. For adults, long-term exposure may increase the risk of high blood pressure, heart disease, and kidney damage. Pregnant women are also at risk, as lead can affect fetal (胎儿的) growth.
So how much lead is too much? U. S. authorities recommend a daily limit of 8.8 micrograms for adults and 2.2 micrograms for children. However, the average American already takes in about 6 micrograms per day through food and activities in everyday life. The real danger comes when extra sources — like certain supplements — push lead in our body beyond safe levels over weeks or months.
What can we do to protect ourselves? While blood tests are available, prevention is more effective. Dr. Cohen suggests reducing the use of supplements that could contain unknown lead levels and choosing natural protein (蛋白质) sources like eggs, beans, tofu, and meats instead of protein powders. If you do use supplements, look for products tested by trusted third-party such as the United States Pharmacopeia (USP), which sets strict safety rules.
Simple daily habits can help reduce exposure as well. Washing hands and produce carefully, and checking homes for old lead-based paint or dust, are useful steps recommended by environmental agencies.
28. What is the main purpose of this article?
A. To advertise safer protein supplements.
B. To warn readers of lead risks in daily diet.
C. To explain the benefits of natural protein in our diet.
D. To compare different food safety rules all around the world.
29. What does the underlined word “accumulate” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Drop slowly.
B. Improve quickly.
C. Build up gradually.
D. Disappear over time.
30. Who are most likely to be affected by lead?
A. Children.
B. Adults.
C. The elderly.
D. Pregnant women.
31. What can be learned from the last two paragraphs?
A. Protein supplements are always safer than natural foods.
B. Good food choices and daily habits can reduce lead risks.
C. Blood tests are the most effective way to prevent lead risks.
D. All the supplements tested by the third-party are trustworthy.
B 29. C 30. A 31. B

According to a new study, AI chatbots tend to agree with their users so much that they often give bad advice, encouraging harmful behaviors and damaging personal relationships. The study tested 11 leading AI systems and found they all showed varying degrees of sycophancy — behavior that was overly agreeable and supportive.
Lead researcher Myra Cheng explained that the team launched the study after noticing more and more people were using AI for relationship advice and sometimes being misled by how it tends to take their side, no matter what. Her team compared the responses of popular AI assistants with the shared wisdom of humans on an advice website. It turned out that AI backed users’ improper actions 49% more often than humans did.
The team also conducted experiments observing about 2,400 subjects, and they found those who shared their interpersonal dilemmas with an AI chatbot became more certain they were right and less willing to repair relationships. Co-author Cinoo Lee pointed out that it meant they weren’t apologizing or changing their behavior, and he added the findings were especially significant for teenagers developing social and emotional skills through real-life interactions.
Moreover, the harm doesn’t stop there — it is widespread. In medical care, researchers say sycophantic AI could lead doctors to confirm their first judgment rather than encourage them to explore further. In politics, it could strengthen more extreme positions by supporting people’s fixed opinions.
Addressing sycophancy, however, is challenging. Sycophancy is so deeply embedded (嵌入) that tech companies may need to retrain their AI systems, said Cheng. A simpler fix could be instructing chatbots to challenge users more — for example, by starting with “Wait a minute.” Lee also put forward the idea of a better AI: it could recognize users’ feelings and remind them to consider others’ emotions, or even encourage face-to-face communication instead of online chatting. That matters because the quality of social relationships is a key marker of health and well-being. Above all, we need AI that broadens people’s views rather than narrows them.
32. Why did Myra Cheng’s team start the study?
A. AI assistants were often misled.
B. Tech companies trained AI improperly.
C. Advice websites worked poorly.
D. People were blinded by AI’s sweet talk.
33. What harm may AI sycophancy bring about?
A. Block relationship repairs. B. Chang people’s fixed minds.
C. Weaken original judgments. D. Mislead public medical opinions.
34. What is a possible solution to AI sycophancy?
A. Recognize the limit of chatbots.
B. Program AI to widen users’ views.
C. Instruct chatbots to please users.
D. Replace AI with face-to-face chats.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Advice from AI needs a second thought.
B. People depend heavily on AI for advice.
C. Tech companies are improving AI systems.
D. AI chatbots are challenging users’ opinions.
D 33. A 34. B 35. A

How does the funny bone work?
If you hit your elbow (肘部) against a hard surface, you’ll feel a strange, and often uncomfortable feeling. We call the part of the body that experiences this feeling the “funny bone”. ___36___ It is actually a nerve (神经).
To understand why this happens, we must first look at how nerves work. Think of nerves as biological wires that carry signals between your body and your brain. For example, if you touch something sticky, your nerves send a message to the brain to tell it about the feeling. ___37___ Then, it sends a signal back to your fingers, telling them to wipe the stuff off.
The “funny bone” is specifically the ulnar nerve. It runs from your shoulder down to your hand. At the elbow, this nerve passes through a narrow space against the bottom of your upper arm bone. ___38___ So, when you hit your elbow, you are momentarily pressing this nerve against the bone. This impact sends a painful feeling from your elbow all the way to your little finger.
___39___ Some people believe it is named for the “funny” or strange feeling you experience after the impact. Others think the name comes from a word game — the upper arm bone is called the humerus, which sounds exactly like the word “humorous”.
Despite its funny name, hitting your funny bone is actually very painful. It is certainly not something you would want to do on purpose. ___40___ Take a deep breath or lose yourself in a quick joke, and the discomfort will soon pass.
A. However, this part is not a bone at all.
B. It is not protected by much muscle or fat.
C. Most people find the name quite enjoyable.
D. The brain processes this information at once.
E. The nerve is responsible for controlling your heart rate.
F. You might wonder why this part has such an unusual name.
G. Luckily, the uncomfortable feeling usually disappears very quickly.
A 37. D 38. B 39. F 40. G

前文“We call the part of the body that experiences this feeling the “funny bone”. (我们称身体中经历这种感觉的部位为“滑稽骨”。)”指出人们把这个部位叫做“滑稽骨(funny bone)”。后文“It is actually a nerve. (它实际上是一根神经。)”指出这个部位实际上不是骨头而是神经(nerve)。A选项“However, this part is not a bone at all. (然而,这个部位根本不是骨头。)”在“bone”和“nerve”之间起到了转折和过渡作用,使前后文形成逻辑衔接。
【37题详解】
前文“For example, if you touch something sticky, your nerves send a message to the brain to tell it about the feeling. (例如,如果你碰到黏糊糊的东西,你的神经会向大脑发送信息,告诉它这种感觉。)”说明神经将信息发送给大脑。后文“Then, it sends a signal back to your fingers, telling them to wipe the stuff off. (然后,它向你的手指发回信号,告诉它们把东西擦掉。)”写明大脑在接收信息后会发出指令。D选项“The brain processes this information at once. (大脑立刻处理这些信息。)”填补了“大脑接收信息”和“大脑发出指令”之间的中间环节,使前后形成清晰的逻辑链条。
【38题详解】
前文“At the elbow, this nerve passes through a narrow space against the bottom of your upper arm bone. (在肘部,这根神经穿过一个紧贴上臂骨底部的狭窄空间。)”表明这根神经在肘部的位置非常特殊。B选项“It is not protected by much muscle or fat. (它没有受到很多肌肉或脂肪的保护。)”中的It指代前文中的this nerve,并解释了后文“So, when you hit your elbow, you are momentarily pressing this nerve against the bone. (所以,当你撞到手肘时,你瞬间将这根神经压在了骨头上。)”所描述的撞击会直接压迫到神经的原因,与前后文构成因果关系。
【39题详解】
后文“Some people believe it is named for the “funny” or strange feeling you experience after the impact. Others think the name comes from a word game — the upper arm bone is called the humerus, which sounds exactly like the word “humorous”. (有些人认为它是以撞击后你体验到的“滑稽”或奇怪的感觉命名的。其他人认为这个名字来自一个文字游戏——上臂骨叫做humerus,其发音与“humorous”完全相同。)”解释“funny bone”这个名字的两种可能来源。F选项“You might wonder why this part has such an unusual name. (你可能会想知道为什么这个部位有这样一个不寻常的名字。)”引出后文对名字由来的解释,符合后文逻辑。
【40题详解】
前文“Despite its funny name, hitting your funny bone is actually very painful. (尽管名字很有趣,但撞到滑稽骨实际上非常痛苦。)”表明撞到滑稽骨会带来痛苦。后文“Take a deep breath or lose yourself in a quick joke, and the discomfort will soon pass. (深呼吸或用个笑话分散注意力,这种不适感很快就会过去。)”表明这种不适感很快会消失。G选项“Luckily, the uncomfortable feeling usually disappears very quickly. (幸运的是,这种不舒服的感觉通常很快就会消失。)”与前文形成转折,且其中的“disappears very quickly”与后文的“will soon pass”形成呼应。

I frowned at myself in the dressing-room mirror. I was wearing white tights, a white leotard (紧身连衣裤) , and a white cap that hid most of my hair. I was one of 10 snowflakes in my dance school’s Winter Wonderland show.
“Grandma, I really don’t feel like being in the show,” I said. Grandma Lani looked at me gently, “Why, mo’opuna?” Mo’opuna means “grandchild” in Hawaiian. Grandma Lani has always lived in Hawaii. “You love to dance.” I used to love to dance. Then Ms. Tuttle gave the part of the Snow Queen to Christine Abrams. Christine got to wear a blue leotard and a feathery skirt that drifted out like a cloud every time she twirled. And she got to do a dance once all by herself. The snowflakes just had to run and spin to look like a snowstorm. I sighed. “I don’t like our dance. And no one would notice if I weren’t there. There are so many of us,” “I would notice,” she reassured me softly.
As Christine walked toward us, Grandma paused and smiled at her. “What a beautiful costume!” Christine glided away, her skirt waving behind her. I hung my head. Grandma took my hand, “What’s bothering my Avery?” “And you won’t be able to tell me apart from the other snowflakes,” I whispered.
Grandma was about to speak. Then something outside the window caught her eye. She grabbed my hand and my coat and pulled me out of the dressing room and through the doors to the outside. It was snowing. Grandma held her breath and I suddenly thought of something, “Grandma, have you ever seen snow before?” “No, mo’opuna. In Hawaii, it snows only on the very tops of mountains.”
I had seen snow lots of times, but now I tried to see it differently, as if it was new. I saw snowflakes twisting through the air in different directions, sparkling and shining at us. So many snowflakes came together to create something magical. “Aloha,” Grandma whispered to the sky. Aloha can mean many things, including “love”, “ hello”, and “good-bye”. “I don’t know when I’ll see something like that again,” “I do,” I said.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
Back in the dressing room, I knew something within me had quietly changed.

As the curtain fell, I heard Grandma’s applause rising above the rest.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Back in the dressing room, I knew something within me had quietly changed. The frustration about being a nameless snowflake faded, replaced by a heartfelt desire to let Grandma feel the magic of snow through my dance. Backstage, I adjusted my white cap and straightened my leotard, no longer envying Christine’s blue costume. When the music started, I joined the other snowflakes. I didn’t just perform — I poured my heart into every spin and step, imagining each movement as a tiny snowflake dancing for Grandma. For the first time, I felt proud to be part of the group.
As the curtain fell, I heard Grandma’s applause rising above the rest. I darted off the stage, white tights swishing, and crashed into her arms. She held me tight, eyes glistening with joy. “You did it, mo’opuna. You made the snow come alive.” Just then, Christine wandered over with a genuine smile, saying our snowflake dance was the most magical part of the show. I didn’t care if Grandma could tell me apart from others; what I did care about was that I’d shared the snow’s magic with her, I squeezed her hand tightly and whispered “Aloha” softly, knowing this tiny “snowflake” had become a precious gift for both of us.

We'll enjoy some snacks and drinks, and later we can play some board games, chat about travel stories and enjoy classic movies. It'll be nice to hear about your trip to you on. I bet you took lots of pictures. Our address is fourteen Green street, but it's easy to miss because the building is behind a big tree and the street sign is small. Call me if you have trouble finding IT, I can guide you there. If you are driving, there's a parking lot next to the building, so you don't have to worry about parking your car. Also, let me know if you prefer any particular snacks, mark, and I can't wait to see you.

A. By removing the red tape by himself. B. By asking neighbors for help.
C. By taking a clear stand against the man. D. By debating heatedly with the man.
27. What message does the story mainly convey?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Practice makes perfect.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

Back in the dressing room, I knew something within me had quietly changed.
