I was thirteen years old. My family had moved to Southern California from North Florida a year before. Angry and stubborn, I could not adapt to this sudden change. Like so many teenagers, I struggled to escape from anything that did not agree with my picture of the world. A “good without need of guidance” kid, I rejected any kind of offering of love.
One night, after a particularly difficult day, I stormed into my room, shut the door and got into bed. As I lay down in the privacy of my bed, my hands slipped under my pillow. There was an envelope. I pulled it out and on the envelope, it read, “To read when you’re alone.” Since I was alone, no one would know whether I read it or not, so I opened it. It said “Mike, I know life is hard right now, I know you are upset and I know we don’t do everything right. I also know that I love you completely and nothing you do or say will ever change that. I am here for you and I love you — that will never change. Love, Mom.” That was the first of several “To read when you’re alone” letters.
Nowadays, I travel the world helping people. I was in Sarasota, Florida, teaching a seminar (研讨课) when, at the end of the day, a woman came up to me and shared the difficulty she was having with her son. We walked out to the beach, and I told her of my mom’s undying love and about the “To read when you’re alone” letters. Several weeks later, I got a card that said she had written her first letter and left it for her son. That night as I went to bed, I put my hands under my pillow and remembered the relief I felt every time I got a letter. In the midst of my teen years, the letters were reminders of calm that I was loved in spite of my shortcomings. Today, when the seas of life get stormy, I know that what under my pillow is assurance of love — consistent (始终如一的) and unconditional love changes my life.

In China, an old tradition called the Shuxiu Ceremony is becoming popular again. Long ago, students showed respect for their teachers by giving them simple gifts. The main gift was dried meat, but they also gave things like celery(芹菜), lotus seeds(莲子), and red beans. Each of these had a special meaning.
The great teacher Confucius said he would teach anyone who brought him these gifts. This made it possible for all kinds of people, not only the rich, to receive an education. Today, students are bringing back this custom in creative ways. For example, in Sichuan, some graduates used bamboo poles to carry fresh pork and celery to thank their teachers. Another student, Zhou Yiwei, gave six meaningful gifts: dried meat to say thank you, celery for hard work, lotus seeds for not giving up, red dates for success, longan for wisdom, and red beans for a bright future.
Why do young people like this old tradition so much? One student said, “Flowers die after a few days, but if my teacher cooks the pork, she will remember our class for a long time.” Students are also adding modern touches—for example, tying celery to look like books, or putting class photos on the meat packages. At Xizang Minzu University, graduates gave their principal pork and celery, calling them signs of “thanks” and “lifelong learning”. This shows how old and new ideas can mix.
The ceremony teaches that showing respect is more important than giving expensive gifts. Teachers are often moved to tears when they receive these simple presents. More than just a way to share knowledge, Shuxiu is about passing on important values. “We are not just copying the past,” said one student, “but using old ideas to say thank you in our own way.”
Times change, but the heart of Shuxiu remains: learning starts with being thankful. By mixing old customs with new creativity, students are planting new seeds of respect—seeds that will grow for many years to come.
( )8. What was the main gift in the ancient Shuxiu Ceremony?

A. Students do not like old traditions.
B. The Shuxiu Ceremony is no longer useful.
C. Modern ways should be exactly like the past.
D. Young people are finding new ways to show thanks.
( )11. What is the best title for the passage?

B. Confucius: the first modern teacher
C. The return of Shuxiu: mixing old and new ideas
D. Creative gifts improve student-teacher relationships

At the office or in school, most people sit most of the day. For those hours of long-time sitting, there is now a healthy way to refresh body and mind. According to a study published in a journal, Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, we can enjoy health all round by walking for five minutes every half an hour!
The research designed five exercise choices for participants who sat for eight hours. The participants were asked to take a one-minute walk after 30 minutes’ sitting, take a one-minute walk after 60 minutes’ sitting, take a five-minute walk every half an hour, or take a five-minute walk every hour. The last choice is no walking at all. The researchers then compared the participants’ health.
They found that five minutes of walking every half an hour was good for blood pressure and blood sugar. Moreover, researchers became happier. “The effects on feelings and tiredness are important. People like to repeat behaviors that make them feel good and that are enjoyable,” the researcher Keith Diaz explained. As those feelings of getting up and moving around were positive, they could make people take more everyday walks.
But sitting all day at work has become accepted. To change this, Diaz is trying to explain to workers that moving during the day is good; a healthy worker is a more productive and satisfying worker.
When it comes to standing desks, he said, “I’m unsure whether there’s really strong scientific evidence that standing is really better than sitting. I worry people have this false sense that they’re healthy because they’re using this desk, and maybe they’re not actually that much better.”
If you’re sitting and haven’t walked around for a while, get up! Treat yourself to an exercise “snack” and then take another one in half an hour. The benefits of a simple, easy five-minute walk are obvious!
( )12. What does the second paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The findings of the study. B. The purposes of the study.

( )13. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in Paragraph 4?

( )14. Which word best shows Diaz’s attitude to the benefits of standing desks?
A. Doubtful. B. Uncaring. C. Worried. D. Confident.
( )15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To prove a point. B. To offer advice.
C. To compare two studies. D. To show a result.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面短文,根据文章的情节续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“What happened?” asked Mrs.Sharpnack. The red marks covering the test said everything.
Without even seeing the grades, I knew I had failed. I felt upset(沮丧的) as I realized what would come after this. My terrible score would mean my grades wouldn’t be high enough to be on the honor roll(光荣榜) that term. I wasn’t as upset about missing a party as I was about having to explain to my friends why I wouldn’t get to go.
My friends always got good grades, and usually, so did I. “I know you can pass this test,” said Mrs.Sharpnack. “What if I let you take it again? I’ll give you a week to study.” But I just wanted to go home, forget about the test and never think about math again.
Mrs.Sharpnack could have left me behind. But she didn’t. Perhaps a great teacher can’t just be satisfied with students falling short of their talent. “I know you can pass this test,” she repeated confidently. She said it with such certainty that it almost felt like a vow(誓言). For a brief moment, I wondered if she could be right.
After school, I had thirty minutes before my bus came. Mrs.Sharpnack asked if I would be willing to use that time to go over the problems I had missed. I agreed. We started right then and made plans to meet each day for one week, after which I would take the test again.
After we went over a few problems, my friend Madena came looking for me.
“What are you doing?” she asked. But before I could say anything, Mrs.Sharpnack turned my test’s back side up, hiding its contents. “Amanda is helping me with a special project,” she said. By then, it was time for our bus to come. I gathered up my things and left with Madena.
For the next week, I stayed after class with Mrs.Sharpnack. She would go over each problem, carefully explaining the solutions.
注意:1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:

Dear Paul,
I understand your dilemma regarding joining the art club while your parents prefer you to choose an academic club. Here are a couple of suggestions to help you.
To begin with, tell them about the educational benefits of art that they may not know about. Highlight how it helps develop creativity and critical thinking. Secondly, make a time management plan to balance studies and art and show it to them.
Remember, communication is the key. Talk openly with your parents about your passion for art and the effect it can positively have on your overall growth.
Yours,
Li Hua
注意:
1. 所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
2. 续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。
Paragraph 1:
The day when I should take the test again came soon. I remained after class, as I did all the other days, but this time I sat at my desk alone. Mrs.Sharpnack gave me a new test and let me start working. The math problems were hard, and I almost handed the paper right back to her. But then I remembered how hard we had worked and how she had told me that she knew I could pass. I calmed down and tried to remember the examples she had used. The next day, Mrs.Sharpnack told me that I had only missed one question.
Paragraph 2:
Things were different after that. The day after the test, I was surprised to find Madena walking into Mrs.Sharpnack’s classroom after school. Then I realized that Mrs. Sharpnack started helping those who were struggling with math. I had thought that once I had retaken the test, I wouldn’t be spending any more time there. But finally, Madena and I went to Mrs.Sharpnack’s classroom to study math every day before our bus arrived.
