Rising Temperatures might boost crop production in cold regions but negatively impact production in warmer areas. Wheat and rice — which benefit from more CO₂ in the atmosphere — could see growing output, while corn and sorghum (高粱) could see a decline with warmer temperatures. Farmers can adjust their practices to a warmer climate in four key ways: A recent study by experts modeled three adaptation methods — changing WHAT, changing WHEN and changing both of them. The chart below shows their impact on the output of corn, rice, sorghum, soybean (大豆) and wheat. These three adaptation methods can already go some way to relieve climate pressures in some countries. But, of course, we don’t only care about crop production at the global level. If farmers in particular regions — especially those that are most food-insecure — cannot adapt to climate change, this is still a major problem. So there is more we can do in the future. 1. What should farmers change if they are short of money and labour? A. WHAT. B. WHERE. C. WHEN. D. HOW. 2. Which crop may benefit most if farmers plant improved varieties? A. Corn. B. Rice. C. Sorghum. D. Wheat. 3. What should be done in the future? A. To move to colder regions. B. To adopt the three methods. C. To focus on crop production. D. To help the farmers in need. B Last spring, my neighbor Donna and I, both in our seventies, spent several hours in the glorious sunshine enjoying the new season. When it was time to sit down and relax, Donna pulled out her red metal chair from her garage (车库), and I sat on an overturned plastic bucket (桶). It was fun to catch up on the news that we had missed during the long winter indoors. However, over the next few days, it turned out that we needed more than a chair and a bucket which were not quite comfortable. Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived. Excitedly, she opened the box and started putting it together. We proudly high-fived each other as the pieces joined up and the bench started to look like one. After a few minutes’ assistance from a neighbour, it was complete. What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats. Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors. One day, someone called out from the sidewalk, “What do you do on that bench?” Quick-thinking Donna called back, “It’s our ‘Thinking Bench’! We think about important things happening in our lives.” Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想) ”, adding yet another name. Last fall, with the temperature falling, we came to the end of sitting outdoors. We were faced with one dilemma — what to do about it in the winter? Well, we sat down and thought and meditated and decided to put it in Donna’s garage for the winter. When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives. 4. What did Donna decide to replace the chair and bucket for? A. Lighten the carrying load. B. Attract more neighbours. C. Get better seating for chats. D. Adapt to warmer weather. 5. How did the bench get its various names? A. From items placed on it. B. From seasonal discussions. C. From users’ activities on it. D. From Donna’s creative ideas. 6. Why are pots and boxes mentioned in the last paragraph? A. To suggest the flowers would soon be planted. B. To show the bench was not serving its purpose. C. To describe the bench’s practical use in winter. D. To explain why the bench needed winter storage. 7. What does “The Bench” represent by the story’s end? A. A symbol of community bonds. B. A solution to the aging problem. C. A reminder of the past summer. D. A memory of a valued online order. C As children grow, their understanding of science and being a scientist changes. Adults’ words are critical to keep them engaged in discovery. Kids are naturally curious and love exploring. “What’s that in your hand? Is it a ball? Will it roll down this hill?” they might ask. This is science in action: observing, testing, seeing results and asking questions. But over time, kids often lose interest in science. To praise a child, many adults often say “You’re a good scientist” The language cues (提示), focusing on science as an identity rather than the actions people do, partly cause this. However, there are some steps to keep the curiosity alive. A study found 4-year-old girls insisted longer when told “Let’s do science” instead of “Let's be scientists.” One possibility is that children may associate scientists with men. If they don’t share that identity, they might disengage from an activity designed “for scientists.” Besides, children may think being a scientist needs special intellectual abilities, which they believe only certain groups have. Perhaps now you are thinking, “Great, I will just focus on doing science and the actions in the scientific process” And this will probably work for kids, even as they grow from childhood to teens and early adulthood. But it’s also true that during the teens, your kids are actively trying and finally forming their own identities. Unlike its demotivating effects on young children, identity-focused language may help teens stay interested in science. One study found if you told middle schoolers to think about being a “scientist” or “doctor” someday, they’d do more homework and probably get higher grades. That might be because if teens see themselves as scientists, they’ll be willing to work to become who they want to be. How these two versions of subtle language cues might work together has yet to be investigated; perhaps this research could be done by your future scientist. 8. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A. By listing statistics. B. By quoting an expert. C. By giving an example. D. By making comparisons. 9. What does the underlined word “this” refer to in paragraph 2? A. The insistence of 4-year-old girls. B. The loss of scientific curiosity. C. The adoption of necessary measures. D. The use of action-focused phrases. 10. How does the identity-focused language benefit teens according to the study? A. It enhances peer connection. B. It increases academic stress. C. It reduces work productivity. D. It promotes study performance. 11. What will the follow-up study focus on? A. The design of scientific activities. B. The difficulty in keeping curiosity alive. C. The influence of action-focused language. D. The interaction between two language cues. D Scientists have found a way to use cyanobacteria-usually called blue-green algae (海藻) — to power a microprocessor nonstop for more than six months. The system uses inexpensive and mostly recyclable materials, with its key part being a safe photosynthetic (光合作用的) algae named synechocystis. Their study was published in the journal Energy & Environmental Science. Paolo Bombelli, a researcher from the University of Cambridge and the main writer of the paper, said, “We were surprised by how steadily the system worked for such a long time. We thought it might stop after a few weeks, but it just kept running.” As Matthew Sparkes reported in New Scientist, the team made a container with aluminum and clear plastic, then put the bacteria inside. The device, about the size of one AA battery, was placed outside a window in Bombelli’s home from February to August. It successfully powered an Arm Cortex-M0+ processor. The authors explained in the study that this type of processor is widely used in Internet of Things (IoT) devices — like home appliances connected to the Internet. The researchers set the processor to work in cycles: 45 minutes of computing followed by 15 minutes of standby. Even without light, the cyanobacteria can still generate electrical energy. Scientists guess this is because the algae process some of their stored food in the dark, which creates an electrical current. Christopher Howe, a professor at the University of Cambridge and co-senior author of the paper, noted, “The growing IoT needs more and more power. We believe this power should come from systems that generate energy, not just store it like batteries. Our photosynthetic device doesn’t run down like a battery because it uses light all the time.” Right now, the cyanobacteria system isn’t strong enough to run all devices. For example, a desktop computer would need 333 million such algae devices to work normally. But the team says the system could be made larger — though more research is needed to find out how much it can be scaled up. 12. What is the key part of the cyanobacteria power system? A. Synechocystis. B. A microprocessor. C. Aluminum container. D. Cheap recyclable materials. 13. What allows cyanobacteria to produce energy even without light? A. Using stored light energy. B. Processing stored food. C. Absorbing energy from batteries. D. Getting power from IoT devices. 14. What can we infer about the cyanobacteria system from the text? A. It will soon replace all batteries. B. It has no potential to power large devices. C. Further research is needed to expand its power. D. It can already power desktop computers normally. 15. Which of the following is the best title for the text? A. Algae Generates Electrical Energy in Dark B. Scientists Develop Algae-Powered System C. Cyanobacteria Powers Microprocessor Long D. Cyanobacteria Acts as IoT Device Power Source I am a child of traditional book reading. I used to go through one book continuously from beginning to end, taking notes or highlighting lines before going on to the next book. It was a slow but deeper way to absorb a book. ___16___ My struggle with Dostoevsky’ s The Brothers Karamazov early on is a good example. After college, my job involved reading a lot of background materials for projects. Many nights I stayed awake till past midnight leafing through pages. ___17___ It helped me breeze through my reading requirements. However, for books I was genuinely passionate about, I switched to a slower pace, and still read one book at a time. ___18___ I no longer stick to one book, but jump between them, spending about half an hour on each. Currently, I’m reading six books in various stages, with more lined up to start soon. My speed reading skills help me scan quickly without losing comprehension. I can easily switch to slow reading mode whenever needed. Recently, I learnt from a journal that my previous reading method is known as “Blocked Practice”, which involves studying one topic thoroughly before moving on to another. ___19___ However, it tends to restrict how you apply knowledge in new and varied situations. On the other hand, the “mixing it up” approach, also referred to as “Interleaved Practice”, could produce dramatic, long-lasting learning benefits. By switching between topics, readers can make connections between ideas and skills. ___20___ Over time, readers could be more capable of solving problems critically. If this is true, then my evolution as a reader of books has been in the right direction all along. A. It helps widen perspectives. B. This method has its limitations. C. That was when I took up speed reading. D. I’m not great at trying out different reading styles. E. That’s why it took me months to finish heavy books. F. Nowadays I’ ve acquired the habit of multiple book reading. G. This approach can be effective for mastering individual concepts. It had been more than 10 years since they’d all been together like this, and the three sisters’ eyes were filled with tears. Actually, the price was eighty-five cents per pound, and that’s what Mark, the grocery store clerk, had told her. But she’d misunderstood. Mark had a solid reputation in the community. People knew him as an honest guy, a straight shooter. And he liked that. He liked it a lot. It gave him a sense of pride, knowing that people saw him as a good person. “But what if I just let this one slide?” he thought as soon as she said “a dollar per pound”. It’s just fifteen cents. What’s the harm in that? As the woman loaded up on apples, he hesitated. His conscience was nagging (纠缠) at him, reminding him that it wasn’t right. “Don’t do it, Mark,” he told himself. “It’s not worth it.” But the words wouldn’t come out. Instead, he silently bagged the apples and placed them on the scale (秤). “Not too bad for the price,” the woman remarked, smiling as she handed him a ten dollar bill. “No, not bad at all,” Mark replied, his hand moving almost on autopilot (机械地) as he counted out the change. “Why didn’t I just correct her?” he scolded himself, feeling a pit in his stomach. He knew he was doing something wrong, but for some reason, he just couldn’t stop himself. The extra dollar felt heavier in his pocket than any coin he’d ever handled. “Can you have them delivered to 200 Maple Street?” she asked, giving him another polite smile. Mark nodded, still unable to find his voice. He watched her leave, the doorbell ringing as she stepped out onto the sidewalk. “Tell her, tell her there was a mistake,” his mind screamed. “Just run after her and give it back. She’ll understand.” But the words got stuck in his throat. Instead, he watched her walk away, disappearing into the city’s hustle and bustle. It’s funny how something so small-a single dollar-can mess with your head. Mark couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d done something terribly wrong. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The next morning, as soon as Mark got to work, he saw the woman from the day before walked in. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 河北昌黎第一中学2025-2026学年高三年级第二次模拟考试 英语试卷 注意事项: 1. 1. 4. C 5. C 6. B 7. Donna decided we needed a bench. After dismissing unsuitable options from local stores, she found a perfect one online. The next day it arrived.(然而,在接下来的几天里,事实证明,我们需要的不仅仅是一把椅子和一只不太舒服的水桶。 以及“What’s more, it was the perfect fit for two 70-somethings to carry on late afternoon chats.(更重要的是,它非常适合两位70多岁的老人进行傍晚的聊天)”可知,唐娜决定把椅子和桶换成长凳是为了让聊天时有更好的座位。 根据第三段中的“Then, the name gradually evolved — after one neighbor sat alone deep in thought, he declared it a “Decision-Making Bench”; another time, when Donna was caught napping, she insisted she was “meditating (冥想) ”, adding yet another name.(然后,这个名字逐渐演变——一位邻居独自坐着沉思后,他宣称这是一个‘决策长椅’;还有一次,当唐娜被发现打盹时,她坚持说自己在‘冥想’,于是又加了一个名字)”可知,长凳的名字来源于使用者在长凳上的活动。 根据最后一段“When I glimpsed it a few times over the next months, the bench sat lonely, holding empty flower pots, and some flat, old boxes. But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome “The Bench” back into our lives.(在接下来的几个月里,当我瞥见它几次时,长凳孤零零地立着,上面放着空花盆和一些扁平的旧盒子。 根据第三段中的“Soon, the bench attracted other neighbors.(很快,长凳吸引了其他邻居)”以及最后一段中的“But now after a long winter, spring flowers are ready to bloom in the warm sunshine, and we neighbours are ready to welcome ‘The Bench’ back into our lives.(但是现在,经过一个漫长的冬天,春天的花朵已经准备好在温暖的阳光下绽放,我们邻居们也准备好欢迎’长凳’回到我们的生活中)”可知,长凳吸引了邻居们一起聊天、思考、做决定,它最终象征着邻里间的情谊联结。故选A。 C As children grow, their understanding of science and being a scientist changes. C 9. B 10. D 11. 第一段中““What’s that in your hand? Is it a ball? Will it roll down this hill?” they might ask. This is science in action: observing, testing, seeing results and asking questions.(“你手里拿的是什么?” 根据第二段中“But over time, kids often lose interest in science. To praise a child, many adults often say “You’re a good scientist” The language cues (提示) , focusing on science as an identity rather than the actions people do, partly cause this.(但随着时间的推移,孩子们往往会对科学失去兴趣。 根据第五段中“One study found if you told middle schoolers to think about being a “scientist” or “doctor” someday, they’d do more homework and probably get higher grades. That might be because if teens see themselves as scientists, they’ll be willing to work to become who they want to be.(一项研究发现,如果你告诉中学生有一天想成为“科学家”或“医生”,他们会做更多的家庭作业,可能会取得更高的成绩。 根据最后一段“How these two versions of subtle language cues might work together has yet to be investigated; perhaps this research could be done by your future scientist.(这两种微妙的语言线索是如何协同工作的还有待研究;也许这项研究可以由你未来的科学家来做)”可知,两种语言提示如何协同作用尚未被研究,明确后续研究方向为两种语言提示的相互作用。故选D。 D Scientists have found a way to use cyanobacteria-usually called blue-green algae (海藻) — to power a microprocessor nonstop for more than six months. Cyanobacteria Acts as IoT Device Power Source 【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. 16. E 17. C 18. F 19. G 20. Specifically, delicate bookshelves could be installed at the corners of each floor’s corridor. These shelves could be stocked with a diverse range of reading materials including storybooks, science magazines and classic novels. Students could drop by during breaks or after school, enjoying a quiet space to unwind from heavy studies. Not only will these corners encourage us to read regularly, but they will also add cultural charm to our campus, fostering a stronger reading atmosphere. I am looking forward to seeing these reading corners come to life. 词汇积累 提出:put forward→bring up 精致的:delicate→exquisite 鼓舞:encourage →motivate 培养:foster→cultivate 2. Specifically, delicate bookshelves could be installed at the corners of each floor’s corridor. What I suggest is that delicate bookshelves should be installed at the corners of each floor’s corridor. 1】Students could drop by during breaks or after school, enjoying a quiet space to unwind from heavy studies. A Dollar on the Conscience (良心) “A dollar per pound, right?” The woman was already opening her wallet. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Mark couldn’t shake the feeling that he’d done something terribly wrong. Throughout the day, the extra dollar burned a hole in his pocket, a constant reminder of his dishonesty. He couldn't focus on his work, constantly replaying the scene in his mind. He knew he had to make things right, but the thought of facing the woman and admitting his mistake filled him with dread. Finally, he decided to take action. He wrote a note explaining the situation, enclosed the extra dollar, and prepared to deliver it to her house after work. The next morning, as soon as Mark got to work, he saw the woman from the day before walked in. His heart skipped a beat as he watched her approach the counter. Before she could say anything, Mark reached out and handed her the note and the dollar. “I’m sorry,” he said, his voice trembling. “I made a mistake yesterday. The apples were actually eighty-five cents per pound.” The woman looked surprised for a moment, then smiled warmly. “Thank you for your honesty,” she said, her words easing Mark’s guilt. He felt a weight lift off his shoulders, knowing he had done the right thing. 词汇激活 行为类 ①集中注意力:focus on/concentrate on ②采取行动:take action/take steps/act on it ③递给某人某物:hand sb. sth./pass sth. to sb. 情绪类 ①恐惧:dread/fear ②惊讶的:surprised/astonished/shocked 【点睛】【高分句型1】He knew he had to make things right, but the thought of facing the woman and admitting his mistake filled him with dread.(运用了that引导的宾语从句,that被省略) 【高分句型2】His heart skipped a beat as he watched her approach the counter.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
