Zhang Hao was a small and quiet boy when he entered middle school. He loved basketball, but he was not tall enough or strong enough to play on the school team. His classmates often laughed at him when he missed a shot. "Maybe basketball is just not for me," he thought sadly.
Everything changed when a new PE teacher, Mr. Liu, came to the school. Mr. Liu noticed Zhang Hao watching the basketball team practise every day after school. One day, he walked up to Zhang Hao and asked, "Do you want to play?" Zhang Hao shook his head. "I am not good enough," he said in a low voice.
"Being good at something does not come from talent alone," Mr. Liu said with a warm smile. "It comes from hard work and never giving up. If you are willing to practise, I am willing to help you."
From that day on, Zhang Hao got up at 5:30 every morning to run and do exercises. After school, he spent two hours practising dribbling, shooting, and passing with Mr. Liu’s help. At first, he still missed most of his shots. But he did not stop. Week after week, month after month, he kept going.
Six months later, the school held a basketball match. When Zhang Hao walked onto the court, his classmates were surprised to see how much he had changed. He was no longer the small, quiet boy they remembered. During the match, he scored 15 points and helped his team win. Everyone cheered for him.
Today, Zhang Hao is the captain of the school basketball team. When asked about his secret, he always says, "I was not born to be a great player. But I was born to be someone who never gives up. That is what really matters."
29. Why did Zhang Hao think basketball was not for him at first?
A. He did not like sports B. He wanted to play football
C. His parents did not allow him D. He was not tall or strong enough
30. What did Mr. Liu think was the most important for being good at something?
A. Natural talent B. Hard work and never giving up
C. Good luck D. Having the best equipment
31. How long did it take Zhang Hao to become a good basketball player?
A. About six months B. About one year
C. About two years D. About three months
32. What can we learn from Zhang Hao’s story?
A. Tall people are always good at basketball
B. Teachers should choose the best students
C. Hard work can help you achieve your dreams
D. You need to be born with talent to succeed
C
Have you ever wondered why some people remember things easily while others forget them quickly? Scientists have been studying memory for many years, and they have found some surprising facts.
First, sleep plays a very important role in memory. When you sleep, your brain works hard to organise and store the information you learned during the day. A study from Harvard University showed that students who slept for eight hours after learning new words remembered 40% more than those who did not sleep well. So, if you want to remember what you studied, do not stay up too late!
Second, exercise is good not only for your body but also for your brain. When you exercise, your heart pumps more blood to your brain. This helps your brain cells grow and connect better. Research has found that students who do physical activities for at least 30 minutes a day perform better in memory tests. Even a short walk can make a difference.
Third, the food you eat also affects your memory. Foods rich in omega-3 — such as fish, walnuts and eggs — are especially good for the brain. Blueberries, which are full of antioxidants, have been called "brain berries" because they can help improve short-term memory. On the other hand, eating too much sugar can actually make your memory worse.
Finally, the way you learn matters too. Scientists suggest that it is better to study for short periods with breaks than to study for hours without stopping. This is called "spaced learning." Also, teaching what you have learned to someone else is a great way to remember it. Studies show that people remember about 90% of what they teach others, but only 10% of what they just read.
So, the next time you find it hard to remember something, try getting more sleep, doing some exercise, eating the right foods, and changing the way you study. Your brain will thank you!
33. According to the passage, what happens when you sleep?
A. Your brain organises and stores information
B. Your brain stops working completely
C. You forget everything you learned
D. Your body makes new brain cells
34. Why are blueberries called "brain berries"?
A. They look like a brain
B. They are blue in colour
C. Only smart people eat them
D. They can help improve short-term memory
35. What does "spaced learning" mean according to the passage?
A. Studying in a very quiet space
B. Studying for short periods with breaks
C. Studying the same thing every day
D. Studying many subjects at the same time
36. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?
A. Eating more sugar can improve your memory
B. Exercise only helps your body, not your brain
C. Teaching others helps you remember better
D. Studying for hours without stopping is the best way
D
The Chinese shadow play, also known as piyingxi, is one of the oldest forms of theatre in China. It has a history of more than 2,000 years and is loved by people of all ages.
In a shadow play, actors stand behind a white screen and hold leather puppets close to it. A bright light shines from behind, making the colourful shadows of the puppets appear on the screen. The actors move the puppets and also do the voices of the characters. Music played on traditional instruments like the erhu and drums adds more feeling to the story.
Making a shadow puppet is not easy. It takes great skill and patience. First, the artist chooses good-quality leather, usually from cows or donkeys. Then the leather is cleaned, dried, and cut into different parts — the head, body, arms, and legs. Each part is carefully painted in bright colours. After that, the parts are connected with thin strings so that they can move freely. A single puppet can take weeks or even months to finish.
The stories in shadow plays often come from Chinese history, folk tales, and legends. Some of the most famous ones include The Monkey King and The Legend of the White Snake. Through these stories, people learn about Chinese culture, values, and traditions.
In 2011, Chinese shadow play was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This means it is recognized as a treasure not just for China, but for the whole world. However, today fewer young people are learning this traditional art. To keep it alive, some schools in China have started teaching students how to make and perform shadow plays.
As an old Chinese saying goes, "A good tradition is like a bright lamp — it lights the way for future generations." It is our responsibility to protect and pass on this wonderful art.
37. What is the Chinese shadow play also called?
A. Kunqu B. Piyingxi C. Jingju D. Yueju
38. Why is making a shadow puppet difficult?
A. Because the leather is very expensive
B. Because only old people can do it
C. Because it takes great skill and a long time
D. Because there are no artists left in China
39. What happened to Chinese shadow play in 2011?
A. It was first created
B. It became popular among young people
C. It was taught in all schools in China
D. It was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list
40. What is the writer’s purpose in writing this passage?
A. To encourage people to protect traditional Chinese art
B. To show the history of leather-making
C. To introduce different types of Chinese theatre
D. To describe how to become a shadow play actor

The Dragon Head Raising Festival, or Long Tai Tou, is a traditional Chinese festival. It falls on the second day of the second month in the Chinese lunar calendar. On this day, people believe the dragon raises its head and brings rain for the crops.
The festival usually comes near Chunfen, or the Spring Equinox. Chunfen is one of the 24 solar terms in China. On this day, day and night are equally long. After Chunfen, days become longer and warmer. Both events tell people that spring has arrived and it is time to start working in the fields.
There are many customs for this festival. One of the most popular is getting a haircut. People believe it brings good luck for the whole year. Another custom is eating special foods like "dragon whisker noodles" and "dragon ear dumplings."

Have you ever wondered why some people remember things easily while others forget them quickly?
Scientists have been studying memory for many years, and they have found some surprising facts.
First, sleep plays a very important role in memory. When you sleep, your brain works hard to organise and
store the information you learned during the day.A study from Harvard University showed that students who slept
O
O
for eight hours after learning new words remembered 40%more than those who did not sleep well. So,if you want
to remember what you studied,do not stay up too late!
Second, exercise is good not only for your body but also for your brain. When you exercise, your heart
pumps more blood to your brain. This helps your brain cells grow and connect better.Research has found that
students who do physical activities for at least 30 minutes a day perform better in memory tests.Even a short walk
can make a difference.
Third, the food you eat also affects your memory.Foods rich in omega-3-such as fish, walnuts and eggs
O
are especially good for the brain.Blueberries, which are full of antioxidants, have been called"brain berries"
because they can help improve short-term memory. On the other hand, eating too much sugar can actually make
:
your memory worse
那
Finally, the way you learn matters too.Scientists suggest that it is better to study for short periods with
breaks than to study for hours without stopping. This is called"spaced leamning."Also, teaching what you have
learned to someone else is a great way to remember it.Studies show that people remember about 90%of what
they teach others, but only 10%of what they just read.
So,the next time you find it hard to remember something, try getting more sleep, doing some exercise, eating

A.Studying in a very quiet space
B.Studying for short periods with breaks

The Chinese shadow play, also known as piyingxi,is one of the oldest forms of theatre in China. It has a
history of more than 2,000years and is loved by people of all ages.
In a shadow play, actors stand behind a white screen and hold leather puppets close to it.A bright light shines
from behind, making the colourful shadows of the puppets appear on the screen. The actors move the puppets and
also do the voices of the characters.Music played on traditional instruments like the erhu and drums adds more
feeling to the story.
Making a shadow puppet is not easy.It takes great skill and patience.First, the artist chooses good-quality
leather, usually from cows or donkeys. Then the leather is cleaned, dried, and cut into different parts-the head,
body, arms, and legs. Each part is carefully painted in bright colours. After that, the parts are connected with thin

strings so that they can move freely.A single puppet can take weeks or even months to finish.
The stories in shadow plays often come from Chinese history, folk tales, and legends. Some of the most
famous ones include The Monkey King and The Legend of the White Snake.Through these stories, people learn
about Chinese culture,values,and traditions.
In 2011,Chinese shadow play was added to UNESCO's list of Intangible Cultural Heritage. This means it is
recognized as a treasure not just for China, but for the whole world. However, today fewer young people are
learning this traditional art.To keep it alive, some schools in China have started teaching students how to make
and perform shadow plays
As an old Chinese saying goes,"A good tradition is like a bright lamp-it lights the way for future
generations."It is our responsibility to protect and pass on this wonderful art.

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to share my favorite Chinese traditional art with you — Chinese shadow play, also called piyingxi.
It has a history of over 2,000 years. Actors hold leather puppets behind a white screen and tell stories with music. Each puppet is carefully made by hand and takes a long time to finish. The stories are usually from Chinese history and folk tales.
I love it because it carries rich Chinese culture and is really amazing to watch. I think traditional arts like this are treasures of our nation. We should learn more about them and pass them on to the future.
Welcome to China and I’ll take you to enjoy a shadow play show.
Yours,
Li Wei

D. Studying for hours without stopping is the best way
【答案】33. A 34. D 35. B 36. C

C. To introduce different types of Chinese theatre
D. To describe how to become a shadow play actor

There are many customs for this festival. One of the most popular is getting a haircut. People believe it brings good luck for the whole year. Another custom is eating special foods like "dragon whisker noodles" and "dragon ear dumplings."
Today, most people no longer work on farms, but the festival is still celebrated in many parts of China. It reminds us of the close relationship between humans and nature and the wisdom of ancient Chinese people.
66. When is the Dragon Head Raising Festival?
67. What does the Spring Equinox mark?
68. Why do people get haircuts on the Dragon Head Raising Festival?

Dear Tom,

It has a history of over 2,000 years. Actors hold leather puppets behind a white screen and tell stories with music. Each puppet is carefully made by hand and takes a long time to finish. The stories are usually from Chinese history and folk tales.
I love it because it carries rich Chinese culture and is really amazing to watch. I think traditional arts like this are treasures of our nation. We should learn more about them and pass them on to the future.

A. Natural talent B. Hard work and never giving up
C. Good luck D. Having the best equipment
31. How long did it take Zhang Hao to become a good basketball player?
A. About six months B. About one year
C. About two years D. About three months
32. What can we learn from Zhang Hao’s story?

B. Teachers should choose the best students
C. Hard work can help you achieve your dreams

Today, most people no longer work on farms, but the festival is still celebrated in many parts of China. It reminds us of the close relationship between humans and nature and the wisdom of ancient Chinese people.
