The light went on, but the unit wouldn’t work. Retired engineer Dean Gallea looked it over and went from removing, sanding and testing the motor to replacing the motor’s thermal fuse (保险丝). “I put the thing back together and, it worked fine,” he says modestly. All in a volunteer’s day’s work at Repair Café, where skilled volunteers help people fix their belongings for free. People brought in broken clocks, fans, lamps, clothing, appliances, toys, bicycles, knives, wooden objects — hoping that the 26 “fixers” on-site could work their magic. “I brought all the things that meant a lot to me,” Jennifer Kohl, who was being helped at the sewing table, says, adding that she especially loved the interaction between the two volunteers, Christl Mageras and Sarah French. “They were going back and forth advising each other, helping each other,” Kohl recalls. Even more striking to Kohl was the teaching nature of these experts. “Christl said, ‘Come here, sit next to me, I’ll show you this,’ and then she had me stitch (缝) one of my pillows and coached me through it,” Kohl says. “She showed me her skills.” Some repair requests may beg the question “Why bother?” But the items’ owners have their reasons. Terry Atkinson didn’t have the heart to throw away a Nitey Lite lamp that had been on her daughter’s nightstand for 24 years, a Christmas present from her beloved grandfather. The repair worked — the Nitey Lite shines bright again. Atkinson couldn’t wait to show her daughter. “Carlee is very emotional,” said Atkinson. “I thought she’ll cry.” “Repair Cafés are the whole package,” says Suzie Fromer, who works with 70 area Repair Café groups. “The drama of whether an item can be saved, the excitement of a challenging fix and the satisfaction of a good save, all mixed up with the twin joys of catching up with old friends while also making new ones. Plus — snacks. Five out of five would recommend.” 4. What does the first paragraph mainly describe? A. A broken blender. B. A repair process. C. A retired engineer. D. A volunteer organization. 5. What can we learn from the things brought in to repair? A. People prefer old items to new ones. B. The fixers have various gifts and skills. C. Repair Café is the only place to choose. D. Most broken items are electronic objects. 6. Which of the following agrees with the teaching nature of the fixers? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Great minds think alike. C. Teach someone how to fish. D. Actions speak louder than words. 7. How does Suzie Fromer feel about Repair Café? A. Amazing. B. Costly. C. Messy. D. Challenging. B 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段“The owner of a broken blender (搅拌器) set it on the table. The light went on, but the unit wouldn’t work. Retired engineer Dean Gallea looked it over and went from removing, sanding and testing the motor to replacing the motor’s thermal fuse(保险丝). (一台损坏的搅拌机的主人把它放在桌上,机器灯能亮但无法运转。退休工程师Dean Gallea仔细检查了它,从拆卸、打磨、测试电机到更换电机的热保险丝。)”可知,第一段完整描述了修理一台搅拌机的全过程。 【5题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“People brought in broken clocks, fans, lamps, clothing, appliances, toys, bicycles, knives, wooden objects — hoping that the 26 “fixers” on-site could work their magic.(人们带来坏掉的钟表、风扇、灯具、衣物、家电、玩具、自行车、刀具、木制品,寄希望于现场 26 名修理能手施展手艺修好物品。)” 根据第五段中的“‘Christl said, “Come here, sit next to me, I’ll show you this,” and then she had me stitch (缝) one of my pillows and coached me through it,’ Kohl says. ‘She showed me her skills.’(Christl说:‘过来,坐在我旁边,我教你这个,’然后她让我缝一个枕头,并指导我完成整个过程。她向我展示了她的技能。)”可知,维修员不仅帮人修好东西,还手把手教物主学会修理技能。C选项“Teach someone how to fish(授人以鱼不如授人以渔)”准确概括了这一“传授技能”的教学本质。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段中的““Repair Cafés are the whole package,” says Suzie Fromer, who works with 70 area Repair Café groups. “The drama of whether an item can be saved, the excitement of a challenging fix and the satisfaction of a good save, all mixed up with the twin joys of catching up with old friends while also making new ones. Plus — snacks. Five out of five would recommend.”(负责当地 70 家修理咖啡馆团体的苏西・弗罗默表示:“修理咖啡馆一应俱全,既有能否修好物品的悬念、攻克难题的兴奋感、成功修复的成就感,还能一边和老友叙旧一边结交新朋友,现场还有点心。满分五分我给五分,强烈推荐。”)” 可知苏西对修理咖啡馆评价极高,认为它十分棒、令人赞叹。 C Few realise it, but Britain is a rainforest nation. Once, a fifth of the country was covered by temperate rainforest, from Cornwall to the Hebrides. Today less than one percent of the UK holds complete pieces of this habitat. Centuries of tree cutting, overgrazing (过度放牧) and land clearance have erased most of it, leaving only dotted, separated areas. Yet restoration (修复) work is now recovering centuries of loss, led by volunteers and conservation groups from the National Trust and Wildlife Trusts. Volunteers plant species matched to the land. All saplings (树苗) are grown from local seed stock, to preserve the island’s unique native genetic lines. “We avoid importing outside seed wherever possible,” Dubbeldam, senior woodland ranger (护林员) with Manx Wildlife Trust, explains. “We’re not just planting trees — we’re restoring what originally belonged to this land.” Rewilding is a misleading simplification for this heavy restoration work. Simply leaving land untended will not rebuild rainforest; continuous pressures exist. Uncontrolled sheep and deer grazing stops new saplings surviving, while foreign plant species choke native plant life. Most surviving rainforest areas are tiny, separated islands which tend to be influenced by drought, disease and temperature changes as global warming speeds up. Restoration work often takes place in cold rain, with volunteers putting in long, dull days of digging, clearing weeds and carrying saplings. Yet the payoff makes every hour worthwhile. On the Isle of Man, after a full day’s planting in cold light rain, volunteers go back to muddy cars, worn out, leaving behind hills dotted with tiny saplings that look unnoticeable today — but will one day form a fully functional rainforest ecosystem. Across windy hills and rain-soaked valleys, an ancient wonder is coming back to life. 8. What mainly caused the loss of rainforest in Britain? A. Natural droughts. B. Climate change. C. Human activities. D. Volunteer mismanagement. 9. What is a feature of the restoration work? A. It focuses on local seeds. B. It relies on foreign plants. C. It leaves land untended. D. It avoids all human help. 10. What is the main idea of paragraph 3? A. Benefits of rewilding. B. Challenges of restoring rainforest. C. Dangers of global warming. D. Achievements of past conservation. 11. What can we learn regarding the future of the restoration? A. No more planting is needed. B. Government will take over. C. Volunteers are losing interest. D. Rainforest is expected to recover. C 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第一段中的“Centuries of tree cutting, overgrazing (过度放牧) and land clearance have erased most of it, leaving only dotted, separated areas.(几个世纪的砍伐、过度放牧和土地开垦抹去了大部分的雨林,只留下零星分散的区域。)” 根据第二段中的“All saplings(树苗) are grown from local seed stock, to preserve the island’s unique native genetic lines.(所有树苗均由本地种子培育而成,以保护该岛屿独特的本土基因谱系。)” 根据第三段中的“Rewilding is a misleading simplification for this heavy restoration work. Simply leaving land untended will not rebuild rainforest; continuous pressures exist. Uncontrolled sheep and deer grazing stops new saplings surviving, while foreign plant species choke native plant life.(对于这项繁重的修复工作而言,‘再野化’是一种具有误导性的简化说法。仅仅放任土地不受管护并不能重建雨林;持续的压力依然存在。失控的绵羊和鹿的啃食阻止了新树苗的存活,而外来植物物种则扼杀了本土植物生命。)”可知,本段主要阐述了雨林修复过程中面临的重重挑战。 【11题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“Across windy hills and rain-soaked valleys, an ancient wonder is coming back to life.(在多风的山丘和雨水浸润的山谷间,这一古老的自然奇观正在重焕生机。)” D Do you often feel the eyes of other people as you go about your day? You trip slightly on the sidewalk, or you get home and notice your hair was strange — and you feel rising anxiety as your mind struggles with what people must have thought of you. The reality is, most people (if any at all) didn’t see a thing. They were too busy living their own lives — and worrying about what other people were thinking about them. Enter: The spotlight effect, a psychological (心理的) phenomenon where we tend to believe that people notice us more than they actually do. The spotlight effect is prevalent in many people’s day-to-day lives, and much of this might feel familiar already. “In nature, the spotlight effect is rooted in how we experience ourselves, rather than how others actually see us.” Novena Chanel, an advisor, notes how, as human beings, we naturally live within our own inner worlds — our thoughts, emotions, and bodily sensations — which can make our own behaviour feel more obvious than it is to others. But while it’s a perfectly natural and common experience, it can still be a difficult thing to deal with. It can cause social anxiety and mess up our thoughts. “So, it is important to understand that this is a very human experience, and often a sign that your system is trying to keep you safe,” Novena says. “Rather than criticizing (批评) yourself, it can be helpful to approach it with curiosity. Gently noticing and naming the experience, for example, ‘I’m feeling very aware of myself right now’; reality-checking your thoughts, asking, ‘What do I think others are noticing, and what evidence do I have against this?’” “Over time, as the nervous system begins to experience more moments of safety in social situations, the spotlight effect often reduces,” Novena adds. “If the experience greatly impacts daily life, it can be helpful to seek support. Cognitive (认知) and behavioural approaches can help with thought patterns, while relational approaches can support deeper exploration of how these experiences have developed.” 12. How does the author present the issue in the first paragraph? A. By quoting an expert. B. By making comparison. C. By providing numbers. D. By describing a phenomenon. 13. What does the underlined word “prevalent” in paragraph 3 mean? A. Dangerous. B. Strange. C. Widespread. D. Similar. 14. Which of the following indicates spotlight effect? A. As an outgoing girl, Lucy enjoys being the center in public. B. After an imperfect performance, I ignored people’s comments. C. Hearing inspiring words, Jason became confident on the stage. D. Walking around the campus, Tom feels everyone is looking at him. 15. What would Novena Chanel probably suggest? A. Seeking professional help. B. Avoiding social situations. C. Ignoring inner experiences. D. Criticizing anxious thoughts. D 13. C 14. D 15. 根据第一段内容“Do you often feel the eyes of other people as you go about your day? You trip slightly on the sidewalk, or you get home and notice your hair was strange — and you feel rising anxiety as your mind struggles with what people must have thought of you.(你在日常活动中是否总感觉他人的目光落在自己身上?你在人行道上轻轻绊了一下,或是回家后才发现自己的发型很奇怪——你会满心焦虑,忍不住反复琢磨别人刚才是怎么看你的。)”以及下文对聚光灯效应的具体介绍可知,作者通过描述日常生活中常见的尴尬场景引出话题。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第三段中“The spotlight effect is prevalent in many people’s day-to-day lives, and much of this might feel familiar already.(聚光灯效应在人们的日常生活中prevalent,很多人对此深有体会。)” 根据第二段中“The spotlight effect, a psychological phenomenon where we tend to believe that people notice us more than they actually do.(聚光灯效应是一种心理现象,指我们往往会高估他人对自己的关注程度。)” 根据最后一段中“If the experience greatly impacts daily life, it can be helpful to seek support.(如果这种体验严重影响日常生活,寻求支持会很有帮助。)” How to Make Allowance (零花钱) Teach Money Smarts Most parents agree kids should learn about money before they’re let loose on the world, but “money smarts” isn’t exactly a standard bedtime story. ____16____ Allowance isn’t just a weekly payout — it’s a mini training ground for real-life money management. Setting the ground rules Will you give cash weekly or monthly? Should allowance be tied to housework? ____17____ Some say kids should earn allowance by doing housework. Others believe tying money to tasks can make children view family contributions as optional. Whatever you decide, making it clear is your best friend — when, how much, what conditions, and what happens if they “forget” to do their part. How much is enough? ____18____ The right amount depends on your family’s budget (预算), your child’s age, and what you expect them to cover. A common guideline is £1 per year of age each week. But if your child is expected to pay for school lunches, or birthday gifts, change accordingly. ____19____ Normalise money talk. No need for a TED Talk — simply ask, “Got any plans for your cash?” Or, “Anything you’re saving up for?” Share stories about your own money mistakes — like the time you spent your birthday money on novelty socks and immediately regretted it. ____20____ Teaching kids about money is a series of small moments, with enough mistakes and laughs. Allowance offers a steady way to practice — through saving, spending, giving, and learning from everyday choice. A. No exact answer here. B. Discuss but don’t lecture. C. Should kids spend money freely? D. Experts are a little divided here. E. The allowance, though, can be your wise choice. F. What if you give them too much? G. Kids appreciate honesty, and it keeps the conversation real. E 17. D 18. A 19. B 20. 【16题详解】 前文“Most parents agree kids should learn about money before they’re let loose on the world, but “money smarts” isn’t exactly a standard bedtime story.(大多数父母都同意孩子在步入社会前应该学习理财知识,但‘财商’并不是标准的睡前故事。)”提出缺少合适途径教孩子理财,后文 “Allowance isn’t just a weekly payout — it’s a mini training ground for real-life money management.(零花钱不仅仅是每周的支出——它是现实理财的小型训练场。)”引出零花钱这一解决方案,E项“The allowance, though, can be your wise choice.(不过,零花钱会是你的明智之选。)” 【17题详解】 前文“Will you give cash weekly or monthly? Should allowance be tied to housework?(你打算每周还是每月发放零花钱?零花钱是否需要和家务劳动挂钩?)”提出两个关于零花钱规则的疑问,后文“Some say kids should earn allowance by doing housework. Others believe tying money to tasks can make children view family contributions as optional.(有人认为孩子应该通过做家务赚取零花钱;另一些人则认为将钱与任务挂钩会让孩子把家庭贡献视为可有可无。)”展现两种不同观点,D项 “Experts are a little divided here.(专家们在这一点上意见略有分歧。)” 【18题详解】 本段小标题为“How much is enough?(多少零花钱才算合适?)”,后文“The right amount depends on your family’s budget(预算), your child’s age, and what you expect them to cover.(合适的零花钱数额取决于家庭预算、孩子的年龄,以及你希望他们承担的开支。)”说明零花钱数额没有固定标准,A项“No exact answer here.(这里没有确切答案。)” No need for a TED Talk — simply ask, “Got any plans for your cash?” Or, “Anything you’re saving up for?”(常态化谈论金钱话题。无需长篇大论说教,只需简单询问:“你的钱打算怎么花?”或者“有没有想要存钱购买的东西?”)”核心讲述和孩子聊钱要轻松交流、不要说教,B项“Discuss but don’t lecture.(多沟通,少说教。)”作为本段小标题,概括整段沟通金钱话题的方式,符合语境。 【20题详解】 前文“Share stories about your own money mistakes — like the time you spent your birthday money on novelty socks and immediately regretted it.(和孩子分享自己的理财失误,比如曾经把生日礼金用来买新奇袜子,事后立刻心生悔意。)”建议家长坦诚分享自身经历,G项“Kids appreciate honesty, and it keeps the conversation real.(孩子欣赏诚实,这能让对话保持真实。)” High school is arguably the most transformative (变革性的) time of a person’s life. B The owner of a broken blender (搅拌器) set it on the table. C Few realise it, but Britain is a rainforest nation. D Do you often feel the eyes of other people as you go about your day? How to Make Allowance (零花钱) Teach Money Smarts Most parents agree kids should learn about money before they’re let loose on the world, but “money smarts” isn’t exactly a standard bedtime story. ____16____ Allowance isn’t just a weekly payout — it’s a mini training ground for real-life money management. Setting the ground rules Will you give cash weekly or monthly? Should allowance be tied to housework? ____17____ Some say kids should earn allowance by doing housework. How much is enough? ____18____ The right amount depends on your family’s budget (预算), your child’s age, and what you expect them to cover. A common guideline is £1 per year of age each week.
