When Grace was in first grade, she and her best friend noticed that at the end of each school year, barely used notebooks and pencils were being thrown away. “We started collecting them from our classrooms,” Grace says. “It was such a waste — there were kids who needed these things.”
That small effort grew into Restoring Rainbows, a group that collects lightly used supplies from schools across the state and gives them to students in need. Now, instead of throwing these items into the trash, students and teachers donate them. Over the summer, the group sorts and cleans everything, then hands them out in August to partner schools and community groups serving low-income families.
“Having your own supplies makes you feel ready and like you belong,” Grace explains. “We’re making sure kids can start the school year with the tools they need.”
So far, Restoring Rainbows has given out more than 30,000 items, growing from two volunteers to over 70 across several towns. “It’s a lot of work, but seeing kids’ faces when they pick their supplies makes it all worth it,” Grace admits.
Recently, support from DonorsChoose, a platform that connects donors with classroom needs, helped the group reach more schools more efficiently. “I’ve learned you don’t have to be a certain age to make a difference,” Grace says. “My first-grade self would be amazed.”
Now a high school freshman, Grace plans to expand the project statewide and hopes other states can follow. “Every kid deserves to feel prepared when they walk into school,” she says. “If a notebook and pencil can help, why wouldn’t we do everything we can to make that happen?”
24.What inspired Grace to collect school supplies?
A.The wastefulness she noticed. B.A suggestion from her friend.
C.A request from DonorsChoose. D.The need of low-income families.
25.What does Restoring Rainbows do with the collected supplies?
A.It ships them statewide. B.It delivers them to students in need.
C.It stores them for the next year. D.It sells them to raise money.
26.How does Grace like her work?
A.Relaxing. B.Challenging.
C.Rewarding. D.Disappointing.
27.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Actions speak louder than words. B.Chances favor the prepared mind.
C.A friend in need is a friend indeed. D.Small seeds can grow into big trees.
【答案】24.A 25.B 26.C 27.D
根据第一段“When Grace was in first grade, she and her best friend noticed that at the end of each school year, barely used notebooks and pencils were being thrown away.(当Grace上一年级时,她和最好的朋友注意到在每学年结束时,几乎没用过的笔记本和铅笔都被扔掉了。)”以及“It was such a waste — there were kids who needed these things.(这实在太过浪费——有孩子正需要这些物品。)”可知,Grace收集学习用品的动因是她亲眼所见的浪费现象。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段“That small effort grew into Restoring Rainbows, a group that collects lightly used supplies from schools across the state and gives them to students in need.(小小的行动发展成了Restoring Rainbows,这个组织从全州的学校回收轻微使用过的物资,并把它们送给有需要的学生。)”可知,该组织会将收集来的物资分发给有困难的学生。
26.推理判断题。根据第四段““It’s a lot of work, but seeing kids’ faces when they pick their supplies makes it all worth it,” Grace admits.(Grace承认:“工作量很大,但是看到孩子们领取物资时的神情,一切都值得。”)”可知,Grace认为这份工作虽然辛苦,但十分有意义、是值得的。
27.主旨大意题。根据第二段“That small effort grew into Restoring Rainbows, a group that collects lightly used supplies from schools across the state and gives them to students in need.(小小的行动发展成了Restoring Rainbows,这个组织从全州的学校回收轻微使用过的物资,并把它们送给有需要的学生。)”以及第四段“So far, Restoring Rainbows has given out more than 30,000 items, growing from two volunteers to over 70 across several towns.(到目前为止,Restoring Rainbows已经分发了超过3万件物品,从两名志愿者发展为遍布多个城镇的70多名志愿者。)”可知,文章讲述的是微小的举动最终发展成规模很大的公益事业的故事。
C
As African forest elephants make their way through the rainforest and search for food, they do a lot of damage to the surrounding plants. They step on, knock over, and remove leaves and branches off trees. In many people’s eyes, they make a broken mess, which has raised people’s concern that they are harming the rainforest ecosystem and may contribute to global warming.
Actually, the elephants’ eating and destruction help with the climate change. How? As they walk through the forest, they thin out young trees that are competing for space, water, and light. As a result, the larger trees grow better, which have the ability to absorb and store more CO2. Meanwhile, lower forest density (密度) enables grasses to grow. Fallen trees make it possible for more light to reach the ground, benefiting the growth of grasses and a more balanced ecosystem. The enlarged grassland contributes to more carbon capture. According to a 2019 study, each forest elephant unknowingly helps the forest pull carbon out of the air — like taking 2,047 cars off roads a year. African forest elephants act as “climate heroes”, trying to create a healthy ecosystem and slow climate change.
Unfortunately, the number of forest elephants has fallen by more than 86% over 31 years, and their living area is now only a quarter of their original size. According to the wildlife scientist Fiona Maisels, between 2010 and 2020, elephants were lost at the rate of 60 a day, or about one every 20 minutes.
Now Ralph Chami, assistant director of the Institute for Capacity Development at the International Monetary Fund, wants to put a better value on forest elephants. Instead of focusing on how much the elephants need us to save them, he thinks we should focus on how much we need them to save us. These four-legged giants aren’t passengers on our planet; they are heroes protecting it.

29.What is the effect of elephants’ behaviors on the forest?
A.Better growth of young trees. B.Larger living space for animals.
C.Higher absorption of carbon. D.Greater competition among plants.
30.Why does the writer list the numbers in Paragraph 3?
A.To show forest resource loss. B.To stress elephant protection.
C.To prove the value of data collection. D.To show the drop in elephant population.
31.What is Ralph Chami’s attitude towards African forest elephants?

【答案】28.A 29.C 30.D 31.B
【导语】文章介绍非洲森林象利于固碳缓解变暖,但其数量锐减,人类极需保护它们。
【详解】28.细节理解题。根据第一段中“In many people’s eyes, they make a broken mess, which has raised people’s concern that they are harming the rainforest ecosystem and may contribute to global warming.(在许多人看来,它们弄得一片狼藉,人们担心它们破坏雨林生态系统,加剧全球变暖。)”可知,第一段里人们将非洲森林象看作森林生态的破坏者。
29.细节理解题。根据第二段中“According to a 2019 study, each forest elephant unknowingly helps the forest pull carbon out of the air — like taking 2,047 cars off roads a year. (2019年的一项研究显示,每一头森林象都在无形中帮助森林从空气中固碳,效果相当于每年从道路上移除2047辆汽车。)”可知,大象的行为提升森林的碳吸收能力。
30.推理判断题。根据第三段“Unfortunately, the number of forest elephants has fallen by more than 86% over 31 years, and their living area is now only a quarter of their original size. According to the wildlife scientist Fiona Maisels, between 2010 and 2020, elephants were lost at the rate of 60 a day, or about one every 20 minutes.(遗憾的是,31年间森林象的数量锐减超86%,它们的现存栖息地仅为原有规模的四分之一。野生动物科学家菲奥娜·梅塞尔指出,2010到2020年间,大象以每天60头的速度消失,相当于每20分钟就有一头大象离世。)”可知,作者列举数字是为体现大象种群数量大幅下降。
31.推理判断题。根据第四段中“These four-legged giants aren’t passengers on our planet; they are heroes protecting it.(这些四足巨兽并非地球过客,而是守护地球的英雄。)”可知,拉尔夫・查米十分敬佩非洲森林象。
D
We’re always in a rush to get more done faster. But what if speed isn’t actually as helpful as we might think? New research published in the European Journal of Neuroscience suggests that slow and steady (稳定) may win the race, with older people who avoid rushing through work performing significantly better at tasks that require concentration.
Researchers from the University of Glasgow divided a small group of participants into two groups (aged 55-87 and 18-27), who each wore special caps to record brainwaves as they completed a task that required focused attention.
Each group was asked to react to numbers flashing on a computer screen, pressing a key when a number came up, but not pressing if it was a three or a six. While the older group were slower by around a seventh of a second, they were only wrong around 8% of the time. While faster, young people were wrong nearly 24% of the time.
Previously, it was assumed that older people might be slower at certain tasks because they got tired easily. To investigate this, researchers arranged high-concentration tasks that lasted 45 minutes, and found that older people didn’t show signs of tiredness or perform worse, suggesting that older people perform slower simply because they are choosing accuracy over speed.
Interestingly, when offered a £50 bonus (奖金) payment for the highest score in the concentration task, young participants did take their time, but ultimately performed worse than the older group.
So, next time you feel like rushing, consider slowing down your pace. A little patience could go a long way.
32.What does the new study mainly show?
A.Steady pace ensures good work. B.Elders do well in focused tasks.
C.Young people work at a faster pace. D.Speed matters most in daily work.
33.What can we infer from paragraph 3?
A.Fast actions mean fewer errors. B.Youngsters always stay focused.
C.Elders are naturally slow-minded. D.Slow responses cut down mistakes.
34.Why do elderly people take more time to finish tasks?
A.They’re easier to be tired. B.They’re more patient.
C.They’re willing to be accurate. D.They’re in a poor state.
35.How did young participants perform with the bonus reward?
A.They got higher accuracy. B.They failed to change the result.
C.They kept working hard. D.They spent time adjusting pace.
【答案】32.A 33.D 34.C 35.B
【导语】文章介绍了一项新研究,表明老年人在需要专注的任务中因选择准确性而非速度,表现优于年轻人。
【详解】32.细节理解题。根据第一段中“New research published in the European Journal of Neuroscience suggests that slow and steady (稳定) may win the race, with older people who avoid rushing through work performing significantly better at tasks that require concentration.(发表在《欧洲神经科学杂志》上的新研究表明,缓慢而稳定可能赢得比赛,避免匆忙工作的老年人在需要专注的任务中表现明显更好)”可知,该研究主要表明稳定的节奏能保证良好的工作表现。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中“While the older group were slower by around a seventh of a second, they were only wrong around 8% of the time. While faster, young people were wrong nearly 24% of the time.(虽然老年组的反应慢了大约七分之一秒,但他们只有大约8%的时间出错。而年轻人虽然更快,但近24%的时间出错)”可推知,反应较慢有助于减少错误。
34.细节理解题。根据第四段中“To investigate this, researchers arranged high-concentration tasks that lasted 45 minutes, and found that older people didn’t show signs of tiredness or perform worse, suggesting that older people perform slower simply because they are choosing accuracy over speed.(为了研究这一点,研究人员安排了持续45分钟的高专注度任务,发现老年人没有表现出疲劳迹象或表现更差,这表明老年人表现较慢仅仅是因为他们选择准确性而非速度)”可知,老年人花更多时间完成任务是因为他们更愿意追求准确。
35.细节理解题。根据第五段“Interestingly, when offered a £50 bonus (奖金) payment for the highest score in the concentration task, young participants did take their time, but ultimately performed worse than the older group. (有趣的是,当为专注任务中的最高分提供50英镑奖金时,年轻参与者确实放慢了速度,但最终表现仍不如老年组)”可知,年轻参与者在奖金激励下仍未能改变结果。
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
In winter, people might reduce their outdoor exercise. The days get dark earlier, and it can be very cold. These conditions can make it harder for some people to get outdoors for exercise. However, cold days can be perfect for outdoor workouts! Health experts say the body must make extra heat to keep warm in low temperatures. 36
The winter season is also cold and flu season. Making outdoor exercise a usual part of your workout may help you avoid both colds and the flu. It may strengthen your body’s defense (防御) system.
Some people who suffer from “winter blues” may benefit from going outside to exercise in the fresh air and sunshine. 37 More sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D.And vitamin D produces hormones that brighten your emotion. So, there are several health benefits of exercising outdoors in very cold weather.
38 Freezing injury is one of the most common. When the air temperature drops below zero, things freeze. Your fingers, toes, nose, and ears can be affected. Protecting them is very important. Cold winds affect these parts of the body more quickly than other parts. 39 When it’s very, very cold and winds are very, very strong, freezing injury can develop in as little as 5 minutes.
However, if you are a generally healthy person, do not think you must move your workouts indoors in winter. 40 Thus you can get a lot out of a cold-weather workout.
A.But there are also dangers.
B.An outdoor workout increases sunlight time.
C.You have to accept the results your decision brings.
D.This means the body is burning more energy and fat.
E.Dress properly, drink enough water and exercise safely.
F.Freezing injury can happen quickly — in less than 30 minutes.
G.Winter workouts can cut your risk of getting the flu by 20% to 30%.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The day our teacher put up the sign-up sheet for the school play, my stomach instantly tightened. While others saw a chance to shine under the bright lights, I wandered aimlessly at the back, my palms growing damp. The thought of standing onstage made my heart race in the worst way. I preferred staying backstage — quiet, unseen, surrounded only by my scripts and notes.
Lily, the drama club president, noticed my hesitation. She was the kind of person who could light up a room with her energy. During rehearsal (预演) one afternoon, she found me arranging props (道具) in the corner. “We need someone for a small speaking role,” she said gently. “Would you be willing to give it a try?” I shook my head, but Lily didn’t give up that easily.
The following week, she persuaded me to join a group reading. My hands trembled as I held the script. When it was my turn to speak, my voice barely rose above a murmur. Some students snickered (偷笑), and my face burned with shame. I wanted to escape, but Lily stopped me. “Let’s read it together,” she offered, reading the lines with me. Slowly, other cast (演出人员) members joined in, offering tips and encouragement.
To my surprise, I started enjoying our rehearsals. The cast became like a second family — we supported each other through forgotten lines and awkward movements. My initial fear gradually transformed into cautious excitement.
As opening night approached, I found myself actually looking forward to it. I practiced my lines constantly, even in front of my mirror at home. I couldn’t stop imagining the moment when the curtains would lift and the stage lights would shine down. I was ready, but also a bit nervous. After all, I had prepared for such a long time.

【答案】Paragraph 1:
The night of the performance arrived at last. As I stood in the wings waiting for my turn, familiar doubts crept back. My palms grew damp, and the script pages in my hand trembled slightly. What if I forgot my lines? What if my voice failed me again? I glanced at Lily, who gave me an encouraging thumbs-up from across the stage. Taking a deep breath, I repeated my first line in my mind like a prayer. When the stage manager whispered “Go”, I stepped into the bright lights, my heart pounding not just with nervousness, but with a newfound determination to conquer this moment.
Paragraph 2:
When the final curtain fell, I stood breathless in the spotlight. The thunderous applause washed over me like a gentle, comforting wave. Lily rushed over and embraced me tightly. “You are absolutely wonderful!” she exclaimed. At that moment, I realized this was more than just a successful performance — it was a personal victory. As I hugged my fellow cast members, I understood that sometimes the bravest thing isn’t to avoid fear, but to face it with the support of those who believe in you. This was just the beginning of my journey toward confidence, both on and off the stage.

28.What role do African forest elephants play in paragraph 1?
A.A destroyer of forest ecosystem. B.A connector of forest food chain.
C.A helper of rainforest’s structure. D.A contributor to natural protection.
A.Doubtful. B.Admiring. C.Uncaring. D.Worried.

第二节 (满分25分)
