These days, keeping otters as pets is getting popular. In Japan, some “otter cafes” are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them. In Indonesia, people go swimming with their pet otters and take funny videos. These photos and videos posted online have interested more people to buy otters as pets. However, these enjoyable photos and videos hide the damage (损害) that the online trade is doing to otters. In fact, wild otters are facing many threats—they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters. In the wild, baby otters usually stay with their mothers during their first year of life. According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old. These baby otters have been stolen from their mothers. When they are kept as pets by humans, they do not live full and natural lives. Otters are very social. They live in family groups of up to 15 in the wild. Keeping an otter as a pet can make it very sad and lonely. These animals also need enough space to swim. Their owners’ bathtubs or pools are nowhere near as large as the bodies of water in the wild. On the other hand, otters simply don’t make good pets. They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house. This would make the smell even more unpleasant. Besides, when otters are unhappy, they will make loud noises and even attack (攻击) people. If a person is hurt by an otter, he or she needs to go to hospital at once. So, we should stop the otter pet trade and never share photos and videos about them online. (F)。 46.In Japan, people can go to special cafes to play with otters, take photos and buy them. 47.Killing otters for their coats and the online pet trade are both serious problems for otters. 48.Most of the otters sold online are adult animals over one year old. 49.The fishy smell of otters will disappear if they are kept inside houses. 50.As long as we stop the otter pet trade and don’t share their photos or videos online, all problems about otters will be solved. 根据“In Japan, some ‘otter cafes’ are open for business. People can pay to play with the otters there and to take photos with them.” 根据“In fact, wild otters are facing many threats—they have long been hunted for their coats; in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish; and now, the online pet trade has become another big problem for otters.” 根据“According to a report, 70% of the otters sold online are under one year old.” 根据“They have a very special fishy smell. If they are kept indoors, they will leave a lot of waste around the house.” 根据“in some places, fishermen have been killing otters in order to stop them from eating fish”可知,仅停止买卖、停止在网上分享照片和视频并不能解决所有威胁,水獭被捕杀取皮、渔民捕杀等仍存在,故选F。 51 It may sound crazy, but the technology for making a “designer baby” is actually possible. However, this issue (议题) has also caused a lot of debate. A “designer baby” refers to an unborn baby whose DNA has been modified (修改). 52 The changes to the DNA and genes (基因) are made in the hopes that babies will be less likely to be born with certain serious illnesses. The idea that we could stop children from being born with such illnesses became very popular. 53 However, people soon learned that it was not only illnesses we could change, but also a baby’s gender and physical appearance. 54 An American couple, Monique and Scott Collins, decided to use a doctor’s research to help them choose the gender of their next baby. They wanted to have a baby girl. Their story became famous and raised attention to just how much doctors can do. For example, you could control babies’ eye color, hair color and even things like height or how athletic your baby will be. People argue that it is not ethical (道德的) to design our babies the way we would design a bag. 55 One example of this is when Adrian Thrasher of University College London was able to save a 1-year-old child from leukemia (白血病). These heroes fought during the important 1949—1950 period for the country’s freedom. The play clearly shows characters like Wu Shi and Zhu Feng, and the actors played them with strong feelings. These heroes put their lives in danger to send top intelligence (情报), which laid an important foundation for the country’s freedom. Wu Shi says the famous line, “If I don’t return, then I don’t return.” This line shows the brave spirit of a hero who fights for his country. What makes the drama special is its true way of showing heroes. They are not shown as perfect idols (偶像), but as common people who have families and fears. However, they always put the country’s needs above everything else. This connects deeply with the audience, making historical heroes more relatable (易共鸣的) than distant figures (人物) in historical records. The drama has great meaning: it strongly passes on the spirit of loving one’s country. It tells viewers that today’s peaceful life was made by the sacrifices of people who lived before us. For everyone, it is a helpful lesson. It encourages people to value the present, keep their love for the country, and do something for the country’s growth. As its good messages spread widely online, Silent Honor shows that true stories about loving one’s country go beyond time. It not only touches people’s hearts but also helps develop good values. C Otters (水獭) are cute water animals. 51 It may sound crazy, but the technology for making a “designer baby” is actually possible. A.But the research is also helpful in the medical field. B.Therefore, during the 21st century, research advanced very quickly. C.Usually, this is done in the very early stages of the embryo (胚胎).
