The first time I used a fountain pen, I couldn’t see why anyone would go to the trouble of using such an outdated tool. However, for my grandfather, the act of writing wasn’t just about putting words on paper — it was a special practice. Writing was about carefully crafting thoughts and communicating them with precision and care. As a teenager in the digital age, I found the leaking ink and the sharp nib (尖) more of an annoyance than anything else.
But my view began to change when I cleaned out his roof space last summer. While sorting through boxes, I came across a wooden box filled with letters — not just letters he had received, but drafts of his own. One letter, written to the local mayor (市长) about the closure of a neighborhood park, wasn’t just a list of complaints. Instead, he had captured the scene of elderly men playing chess in the shade, the distant sound of children laughing, and the general peaceful atmosphere of the area. The writing was both elegant and firm, urging the mayor to consider the value of community spaces.
It was then that I understood. My grandfather didn’t write simply to communicate information. His letters were an effort of love and respect, intended to give the reader the time and attention they deserved. He wasn’t writing for quick exchange, as I often did with my text messages, but for lasting impact.
I began using that old fountain pen again. At first, my hand seized up, and I found it annoying to write at the pace my thoughts raced. But gradually, the slow ink flow forced me to slow down and think deeply about every word. Writing became more than just a task — it became a way of truly reflecting on my thoughts, my emotions, and my words.
24. How did the author feel about the fountain pen as a teenager?
A. Bothered by its inconvenience. B. Inspired by its design.
C. Unhappy about its history. D. Proud of owning one.
25. What impressed the author most about the grandfather’s letter to the mayor?
A. Its detailed description. B. Its formal language.
C. Its strong complaints. D. Its urgent request.
26. What can be learned about the grandfather?
A. He cared about readers’ responses. B. He wrote to send simple information.
C. He preferred quick text message chats. D. He treasured heartfelt slow communication.
27. What has the author realized about writing with a fountain pen?
A. Speed is the most important. B. It drives one to think deeply.
C. It is just a simple task to finish. D. Old tools are better than new ones.

With global temperatures climbing and sea levels rising, extreme weather events are becoming an everyday reality. Getting informed in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death. Now AI can help. Two studies published in the journal Nature described the benefits of two AI models that could improve weather forecasting.
The first AI-based system, developed by the Huawei Cloud team, is known as Pangu-Weather. It is capable of predicting global weather a week in advance. Before it came out, most countries relied on mathematical weather prediction models. What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed. When compared to the mathematical weather prediction method, Pangu-Weather is 10,000 times faster and no less accurate.
Pangu-Weather can predict weather patterns 5 to 7 days in advance. However, it can’t forecast precipitation (降水). As precipitation prediction is vital for extreme weather forecasting, a second Nature model, NowcastNet, fills this gap. It can accurately predict rainfall 6 hours ahead, helping meteorologists (气象学家) study weather patterns in real-time more effectively.
NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain.
While generative AI models have good prospects in weather forecasting, experts point out that replacing existing systems has many challenges. However, in 5 to 10 years, these models may surprise us.
28. What does the underlined word “disparity” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Balance. B. Relationship. C. Difference. D. Comparison.
29. What’s special about Pangu-Weather?
A. Theory-based. B. Human-operated. C. Data-driven. D. Cloud-powered.
30. What is an advantage of NowcastNet?
A. It reduces radar errors on a large scale. B. It predicts downpours with high accuracy.
C. It observes rain data from global countries. D. It tracks extreme weather 24 hours in advance.
31. What is the text mainly about?
A. The impacts of climate change on extreme weather events.
B. The introduction to high-tech weather-forecasting models.
C. The explanation of new measures to protect the environment.
D. The challenges in using generative AI in weather forecasting.

Back in the 1950s, when instant cake mixes hit the grocery stores, American housewives were initially doubtful. These boxes of powder promised to make cake-baking easy. However, it felt too easy. The producers found that requiring the addition of an egg in the baking process was just enough to make the housewives happy with their work. The greater sense of effort gained from a little more work is believed to have been essential to the later success of the cake mix.
This reflects the IKEA effect (宜家效应), which is identified by psychologist Michael I. Norton and his workmates, suggesting we place greater value on things we have worked to create. They conducted four studies in which they asked participants to fold paper cranes and frogs, put IKEA boxes together, and build sets of Legos. They then asked the builders to bid (出价) for their creations, and compared the prices with bids from people who hadn’t built them. The builders consistently outbid the non-builders.
Interestingly, the IKEA effect works even when people have no opportunity to fully personalize their creations. While most participants’ folding skills left much to be desired, they loved their imperfectly personalized products all the more. Builders valued their wrinkled (皱巴巴的) crane-like creations nearly five times as much as non-builders. Beauty, it seems, is in the eye of the builder.
Today, as cities are suffering from severe housing crises, the IKEA effect can give us insight into the well-being benefits of a self-building approach to housing development. Projects like WikiHouse are working to make housing more affordable and sustainable by making it easier for people to build and personalize their own homes.
“The moment people are involved with their built environment, they have a totally different relationship to it.” WikiHouse co-founder Alastair Parvin explained. “When the roof starts leaking, they have the power to fix it themselves.”
32. What was the key to the change of housewives?
A. Extra involvement. B. Reduced cost.
C. An easy approach. D. A detailed recipe.
33. What does the IKEA effect refer to?
A. People prefer easy solutions. B. People value self-made things more.
C. People pay more for handmade items. D. People love carefully designed products.
34. What does the example of WikiHouse indicate?
A. Professionals should design all houses. B. Building houses requires advanced skills.
C. Personalized homes improve people’s abilities. D. Hands-on building helps relieve housing crises.
35. What’s the purpose of this text?
A. To make a comparison. B. To promote a product.
C. To share an experience. D. To explain a concept.

Amy was 16. She was determined to do well in school because she dreamed of becoming a scientist, and she knew how much competition there was for university science programs. Her marks were excellent. Amy had a perfectionistic approach, always expecting herself to do things to the highest standard.
She had a habit she wasn’t even aware of: whenever things didn’t go as expected, she would grab a notebook, list the facts and write down what went wrong — like a scientist recording an experiment. She never used it for herself, only for her school projects.
But her math midterm result was very disappointing to her — only 78. It was a hard test, and only one person got a better grade. Yet she told herself she had completely blown the test, calling herself stupid and a loser. She imagined being rejected by university for her poor math score, which filled her with deep sadness.
Constant worrying cost her sleep. She failed to concentrate on the following English midterm and got a lower mark as well. Scared, she thought she had fooled everyone and was not smart at all. For weeks, she shut herself in her room, crying and suffering from terrible sleeplessness. She made excuses to turn down her friends, feeling empty and unwilling to chat or hang out with them.
One friend’s warm words on the phone rang in her mind: “Amy, we miss you. You don’t have to be perfect to be our friend. Just let us in. ”
After hanging up, Amy sat silently. Seeing piles of untouched textbooks and the late clock, she knew she couldn’t go on like this. She took out her notebook and wrote: I’ve totally blown this test. I’m stupid and lazy. I’ll probably mess up all my other tests. She stared at the lines, then slowly picked up her pen and wrote beneath them: But is that really true?
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Amy decided to answer it like a scientist.

【答案】24. A 25. A 26. D 27. B

【答案】28. C 29. C 30. B 31. B
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了两款新型AI气象模型“盘古气象大模型”与“NowcastNet”在极端天气预测中的优势与应用前景。

词句猜测题。 根据第一段中“Getting informed in time to prepare for a disastrous hurricane or heat wave could be the disparity between life and death.(及时获知信息以防范灾难性飓风或热浪,可能是生与死之间的disparity。)”可知,能否及时获取信息决定了生死两种截然不同的结果,因此disparity在此处意为“差别,差异”。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。 根据第二段中“What makes Pangu-Weather different is that the Pangu-Weather model is deeply trained with the help of 39-year global weather data, preparing it to forecast temperature, pressure, and wind speed.(盘古气象大模型的独特之处在于,该模型依托长达39年的全球气象数据进行深度训练,使其能够预测气温、气压以及风速。)”可知,盘古气象大模型的核心特点是依靠海量数据进行深度学习训练,即“数据驱动”。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第四段中“NowcastNet focuses on detailed, realistic descriptions of extreme rainfall patterns. It uses radar observations from the US and China, as well as deep learning methods, to predict precipitation rates over a 1.6-million-square-mile region of the eastern and central US up to 3 hours in advance. 62 meteorologists from China tested NowcastNet and ranked it first, out of four other leading weather forecasting methods, in reliably predicting heavy rain.(NowcastNet侧重细致、真实地还原强降雨气象特征。该模型整合中美两国雷达监测数据,结合深度学习算法,能够提前三小时预判美国中东部160万平方英里区域内的降水强度。来自中国的62名气象专家对NowcastNet开展测评,与其他四款主流预报工具相比,该模型的暴雨预报可靠性排名第一。)”可知,NowcastNet的优势在于能高精度地预测强降雨。

【答案】32. A 33. B 34. D 35. D

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Amy decided to answer it like a scientist.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Months later, Amy received her final exam results.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】范文
Amy decided to answer it like a scientist. She listed the “data”: the test difficulty, her preparation hours, and her actual mistakes. Then she wrote, “Label: I am stupid and lazy. Proof: One imperfect test. Proof against that: my history of top grades, my hard work, and my friend’s reminder that perfection isn’t the price of friendship.” She designed an experiment — instead of panicking, she would review errors systematically, sleep seven hours nightly, and practice daily math problems for thirty minutes. Slowly, the fog lifted. She began sleeping better, reconnecting with friends over short breaks, and treating setbacks as data points, not final judgments. By the time finals approached, she had traded fear for curiosity.
Months later, Amy received her final exam results. Math: 90. English: 93. Not flawless, but solid. More importantly, she saw them not as final judgments but as feedback. She reflected: “I am not a failed experiment; I am a work in progress.” The scientist in her realized that real discovery demands patience with imperfection. She called her friend, laughing, and made plans for the weekend. Looking ahead, she still dreamed of science — but now she knew the most vital research was on herself: how to fail forward, learn constantly, and let others in. The university doors would open, she believed, not because she was perfect, but because she was resilient. And that was her breakthrough discovery.
