Cai Qun is a Miao woman from a small village in Guizhou. When she was born 42 years ago, her mother began to make a traditional Miao wedding costume for her. It took about 15 years to finish the costume, because every single part was made by hand.
Cai fell in love with the traditional batik (蜡染) and embroidery (刺绣) skills because of her mother. She has been learning these skills from her mother since she was 8. Miao batik has a history of over 2,000 years. People call it “fingertip ballet”. Last year, it became a national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产) of China. Cai says that all batik patterns are passed down from parents to kids. Those round beautiful patterns are all drawn by hand, without any rulers.
As an inheritor of Miao batik skills, Cai feels it her responsibility to make batik develop further. She finds that batik can be made into many kinds of goods, especially small gifts for visitors. So in 2009, she decided to open a company, which employs village women to make hand-made goods with difficult but beautiful patterns.
They sell their embroidery works at a nearby place of interest. Tourists are deeply attracted by these special works. Cai thinks the key to improve batik design is to add more things from modern daily life and use more modern colors.
As her company slowly grew, the local government gave her money to build a three-floor factory. The government also built a special museum to show wonderful batik paintings and delicate embroidery works. Now the museum is an official base for protecting and showing Guizhou’s local traditional culture and tourism.

Have you ever seen a toy that makes people line up for hours just to buy it? That’s exactly what’s happening with Labubu, a super cute Chinese toy that’s becoming popular everywhere in the world.
Labubu is a character from Pop Mart, a famous Chinese toy company. It’s part of a series called “Monster”, and it has become a global sensation (轰动). With its unique look — two long ears and sharp teeth when it smiles — Labubu breaks traditional beauty standards and has become a favorite among collectors. There are over 100 different Labubu characters, and each one is special in its own way. When new stores open or new toys come out, long shopping queues form in front of the stores. In cities like Los Angeles, London, and Tokyo, people wait in line for hours to get one.
In Shanghai, you’ll see young people proudly showing off their Labubu toys on their backpacks. In New York, fans camp outside stores overnight just to buy this Chinese toy. In Spain, Labubu is everywhere. Spanish fans even wrote a song about it.
Pop Mart started selling its toys worldwide in 2018. By 2024, it had over 500 stores in more than 30 countries. People in 90 countries can even buy Labubu online. The founder of Pop Mart, Wang Ning, wants to create something as amazing as Disneyland, but with Chinese culture. Singapore uses about 430 million units of water every day-a number which is expected to double in the next forty years. Such a large amount of water use is putting great pressure on this Asian city state to deal with the growing worry about global water shortage. Therefore, it is developing new technologies to get ready for a future in which getting clean water will become even harder.
The rapid growth of cities and the rising global temperatures are making it increasingly difficult for people to get natural water sources. Singapore, meanwhile, is home to more than five million people and is full of fountains, man-made lakes and other water features — including the world’s tallest indoor waterfall, a 130-foot facility which transports 10,000 units of water per minute through a pipe. However, the country has no natural water sources of its own. Instead, it depends heavily on recycled water and water bought from its neighbouring countries.
There is a strong wish to become water independent — to take control of the future — and that largely depends on the technologies being developed. One development is a small, black sponge (海绵) called carbon fiber aerogel (碳纤维气凝胶), which can clean waste water on a large scale. The sponge can take in waste, pollutants and microplastics that weigh 190 times as much as itself. This material is really useful and will be further developed for commercial use.
Another one is a light and easy-to-carry filtration device (过滤设备) which has already provided clean drinking water to more than 75,000 people across Southeast Asia. One of the most creative things about this product is its simplicity. The water filter is no bigger than a bicycle pump, yet it can provide clean water to villages of 100 people for up to two years.
Everyone is very lucky to have access to clean drinking water. For the people of Singapore, it is a right that they should be able to bring to the rest of the region, and they believe that clean water is an essential part of life on earth. Only by working together can we truly build a community with a shared future for all mankind.
32. What can we infer from Paragraph 2 about Singapore?
A. It wastes a large amount of water every day.
B. It has enough natural water sources for its people.
C. It is the only country in Asia facing water problems.
D. It has to depend on other countries for some of its water.
33. Why does the author mention the numbers “190 times” and “75,000” in Paragraphs 3 and 4?
A. To show how much water Singapore uses daily.
B. To suggest that Singapore has too many people.
C. To prove that the technologies are truly effective.
D. To compare the cost of different filtration devices.
34. How does the author develop this passage?
A. By comparing Singapore with other Asian nations.
B. By listing the problems first and then offering the solutions.
C. By telling a story of how Singapore deals with water shortage.
D. By questioning whether these new technologies are truly valuable.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards Singapore’s water technologies?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unconcerned. D. Critical.

Li Na, a Chinese exchange student in the UK, felt a bit nervous when Mr. Smith asked each student to bring something that is important to them and share it with the class on Thursday. She sat in her seat quietly, thinking hard about what to bring. Suddenly, she remembered that the Lantern Festival would come next Friday. Her eyes lit up with excitement.
On Thursday, the classroom was filled with joy and laughter as students shared their favourite snacks and toys. When Li Na’s turn came, she rose, holding a wooden box. She opened it gently and took out a folded (折叠的) piece of red paper. With a few skillful folds and pulls, the paper magically turned into a beautiful lantern. She placed a candle inside and lit it carefully.
“What is it?” asked Emma, her deskmate. “It is amazing!”
Holding up the lantern, Li Na smiled and introduced the Lantern Festival — its traditions of hanging lanterns, guessing riddles, and eating sweet sticky rice balls called yuanxiao. “Red lanterns stand for hope and getting together in Chinese culture,” she explained. “And this year, the festival will come next Friday.”
Seeing how interested the students were, Mr. Smith walked over with a smile and said to Li Na, “Would you like to hold a Lantern Festival party for the whole class next Friday night? I’m sure it will be a wonderful way to connect cultures.”
“I’d love to!” Li Na replied at once.
Everyone clapped in the classroom. But as she sat down, she started to worry — how could she make the party really fun and unforgettable?
