It started innocently enough, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled, as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.
Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while doing rock climbing. I am not sure what exactly happened, but I believe, my foot missed a hold on the way down. I didn’t land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing and I said to Nick sadly, “A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn’t let that happen.”
It took nearly three months before I felt strong to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then panic set in. I felt like I had let myself and Nick down. He reassured me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided me and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.
Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover, it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the limits.

D. She valued the new insight developed from climbing.
26. What was the key to the success of the author’s first try after recovery?
A. Nick’s backing. B. Her passion.
C. Her experience. D. Her doctor’s encouragement.
27. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
A. Facing up to the Next Challenge B. Reaching for a Lifelong Ambition
C. Pushing Boundaries with Rock Climbing D. Improving Competence Through Doing Sports
C
It was a cold May morning when I received an email from an old friend inviting me to join a 10-day all-girls surfing trip. I knew I had to say yes. The trip seemed simple enough. 10 women aged 30 to 45, all complete strangers, were to meet on the coast of Portugal to try something new: surfing in the Atlantic Ocean. I have always loved traveling, so I eagerly sent an email to my boss asking for time off to make the trip.
If there’s one thing I’ve learned over my past 33 years, it’s that adults typically spend their days mastering the things they’ve done before. It seems like we pride ourselves on becoming experts in whatever field we’ve fallen into, knowing more about less. Now, in theory, this is a great strategy, as it allows you to become really good at one particular thing, but it also may end up leaving some skills lacking.
I met my new surfing companions on the lawn of the hotel in a small surf town called Ericeira. Despite our different personalities and backgrounds, we were all united in a strong desire to challenge ourselves, learn, tackle issues and grow.
The shores at Ericeira, where the beginners learn to surf, are shallow and covered with slippery rocks. They make for softer waves but are difficult to ride.
Guided by our amazing coaches, together, we faced the waves. Sometimes, it poured with rain, and the waves crashed around us, but we were still out there. And with every slip and fall, words of encouragement filled the air. Honestly, I probably spent most of my days frozen to the bone, but that didn’t matter because a new level of genuine joy and personal achievement had been unlocked.
Learning a new skill taught me the humility that can come from doing badly at something new, and the pride that develops when you finally manage to grasp something you’ve been working on. While surfing might not be my lifelong passion, trying it out inspired me to take more risks in life. You never know what you’re capable of if you don’t go out there and try.
28. What inspired the author to join the surfing trip?
A. Her love for seashore surfing. B. Her desire to make new friends.
C. Her need to take a break from work. D. Her desire for exploring something new.
29. What does the author think of adults’ focusing on mastering one field?
A. It narrows one’s potential. B. It hurts one’s pride.
C. It broadens one’s view of the world. D. It promotes one’s career success.
30. Which adjectives can best describe the author’s surfing experience?
A. Relaxing but dangerous. B. Challenging but rewarding.
C. Tough and uninteresting. D. Surprising and unforgettable.
31. What can be inferred about the author?
A. She used to lack confidence in herself.
B. She was determined to become an expert surfer.
C. She discovered her lifelong passion after the trip.
D. She was more willing to try new experiences in life.
D
If you’re searching for scenic places, visiting wetlands probably won’t be high on your list. Although wetlands might not look very pretty, they serve important ecological functions such as water filtration, flood protection, carbon storage, and providing habitats for a diverse range of plant and animal species.
With the exception of Antarctica, wetlands exist naturally on every continent. There are many different types of wetlands on Earth, including bogs, swamps, and marshes. Along with rain forests, they are among the most diverse places on Earth. In addition to naturally occurring wetlands, humans are creating artificial ones for a number of purposes related to water management.
One of the main benefits of wetlands is that they can prevent floods. They do so by storing water and then slowly releasing it over time. Wetlands operate similarly to a sponge. When it rains heavily and water levels rise, they absorb the excess water. This prevents the excess water from entering streams and keeps the streams from overflowing. Then, when water levels become low, wetlands will release water. In many cases, wetlands offer a much more affordable solution than dams. However, it’s important to note that wetlands, like dams, can’t get away from all dangers from flooding. In cases of extremely heavy rainfall, wetlands can fill up and any additional water will flow into streams.
Wetlands can also play a part in water purification. Agricultural wastewater, industrial wastewater, and urban sewage are the main causes of water pollution. Wetlands contain plants and organisms that can reduce this pollution by filtering out unwanted substances such as chemicals, decomposing matter and sediment.
Wetlands play an important role in supporting local ecosystems by providing essential resources and habitats for various species, including fish, amphibians, and migratory birds. They can help to feed nearby fish by releasing vegetative matter into rivers. Also, many amphibians use wetlands as breeding grounds because wetlands provide them with places for food hunting and for reproduction. What’s more, some birds use wetlands for migration, as they can settle in trees and then hunt in the wetlands when they’re hungry.
Wetlands may not look pretty, but they’re capable of doing the dirty work required to keep our planet clean and ensure that the cycle of life remains unbroken.
32. What major environmental functions do wetlands have?
A. Producing fresh water and building dams. B. Limiting floods and cleaning polluted water.
C. Beautifying landscapes and attracting tourists. D. Changing the climate and growing rare plants.
33. Why does the author compare wetlands to a sponge?
A. To show its rich resources for wild animals.
B. To describe its muddy and wet natural appearance.
C. To stress its ability to clean polluted running water.
D. To explain how it holds and gradually releases water.
34. What does the underlined phrase “filtering out” in Paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Removing. B. Enriching. C. Ignoring. D. Using.
35. What is the main writing purpose of the passage?
A. To classify different kinds of wetlands across the world.
B. To appeal to people to protect wetlands from being destroyed.
C. To explain why unattractive wetlands are ecologically essential.
D. To argue that wetlands are a better choice than man-made dams.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Do you ever feel a little more relaxed after walking around barefoot on the grass or sand? 36 It’s a practice that allows people to directly connect their bodies with the Earth and use its natural electrical charges to stabilize them.
By practicing earthing, you can focus on reconnecting your energy with the earth through direct or indirect contact. 37 You can play in the dirt: dig into the earth and get the soil between your fingers. You can create a garden in your yard and directly link to the energy in the dirt.
38 That may replace the direct connection you’d get being barefoot outside. Grounding carpets, blankets, and socks bring Earth’s electrical currents into the home or office by copying the physical connectivity of a nature walk.
Earthing can be a free and relatively easy way to positively impact your physical and mental well-being. 39 Research shows that people who used grounding carpets for four weeks decreased exhaustion, sleep disruptions, and improved length of sleep. They also reported an improvement in their depression, stress, and pain.
If you want to give earthing a try, there are a few important things to remember. 40 . It requires patience and perseverance. If you’re new to the idea of earthing, you should find a professional to lead you. And once you’ve got the ball rolling, go full steam ahead. The more you work on grounding yourself, the faster you’ll begin seeing improvements.
While it isn’t something that should be used alone to treat a condition, earthing can potentially be part of self-carer routine.
A. You can take a walk on grass, across the sand or in the mud.
B. Earthing, like other forms of treatment, isn’t a quick treatment.
C. When going outside is not an option, just ground yourself indoors.
D. That’s the idea behind earthing, which is also known as grounding.
E. Be observant of yourself and your surroundings and stay in the moment.
F. Experts suggest 30 minutes a day on earthing is enough to enjoy the benefits.
G. Research shows little connection between earthing and health improvements.

Dear Lucas,
Thrilled to hear that you are planning a study tour in Hainan, I would like to suggest a theme for it — “The Dream of Space and the Beauty of Nature”.
As for the main activities, I would like to propose the following itinerary. On day 1, you can begin with a hike up Tongguling in Wenchang. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of Moon Bay, featuring its stunning azure waters and silver sands. In the evening, consider organizing a cooking session at the campsite, where participants can work together and enjoy delicious meals. On day 2, you can visit Wenchang Supercomputing Center to find the critical role supercomputing plays in shuttle launches and space exploration. In the afternoon, why not hold a sharing session where everyone can reflect on their experiences and insights from the study tour?
I hope you find the above suggestions helpful in your planning for the coming study tour. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Yours,
Li Hua

M: Love it! This phrase is sure to help get more people involved, and I believe the activity will definitely help raise more awareness of protecting nature.
W: Exactly. (14) Plus, it’s a great chance for us students to better connect with each other.
M: Definitely. It’s always nice to take a break from the daily routine. Anyway, after the event, all participants are asked to share photos and updates on how many trees they have planted.
W: (15) Good idea! That’ll show the impact we’re making and encourage more participation in future events.
M: (16) Let’s go together this Saturday one more time to finalize the details, including what and how many tools to purchase. I’m glad you’re on board, Eva.
W: Happy to help.
Text 10 (外籍写作教师的自我介绍)
Good morning, everyone. I’m Monica from Canada, and I’ll teach you English writing this term. Before we start, I’d like to take a few minutes to let you know something about me.
When I was small, (17) I enjoyed spending my summers reading storybooks instead of playing baseball or taking dance lessons. After I went to school, I took reading time seriously. Once, I tied one end of a string around a book and the other end around my waist, climbed a tree and sat in the branches, reading until dinner time.
In college, I thought I might major in journalism or history, but when I took my first literature class, I was deeply attracted to it. (18) The calling to be an English major was in my heart, and I couldn’t imagine spending my study hours without Shakespeare, Chaucer or Lewis by my side. I learned the art of making connections between literature and life, and developed a love for writing.
(19) After graduation, I taught English in a primary school in Canada for five years. Then I went to Australia and worked as a book editor. (20) Three years ago, I came to China. I’ve been teaching English in middle schools. I love my job and I’m thankful for the gift of words, for the life, connection, beauty, and learning that come from language.
