Agnes Gund, former president of New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA),
was one of America's best-known art supporters.Over her lifetime, she donated more
than 1,800 artworks to museums and supported AIDS research and social equality. In
2017,she sold her treasured painting Masterpiece for $165 million and used the money
to start the Art for Justice Fund, which gives financial support to groups working for
social justice.
Unlike some billionaires who keep their wealth,Gund believed art should serve
society."You've got to get people to care...maybe this is the only way I can do art,"
she said. She often said her good fortune brought a sense of duty-and even regret-
that led to deep empathy(同理心)for others.
Gund built close friendships with many artists, often buying works directly from
them."She put artists first,"said Sara Friedlander of Christie's."That's how she got
such wonderful pieces."Later this month, three major works from her collection are
expected to sell for nearly $150 million.Even in her eighties,Gund remained active in
causes she cared about.
During her time as leader of MoMA from 1991,she pushed for more support for
living artists and helped expand the museum's educational role. She also founded Studio
in a School, bringing art teachers into New York City classrooms. Her daughter recalled
that even in her final year,Gund was busier than anyone realized, working tirelessly for
fairness,safety,and justice.
Gund passed away in 2025 at the age of 87.Many called her "the last good rich
person."Her influence lives on not only in museums but in the social justice movements
she helped fund.As Friedlander noted,"No one did it like her-and we hope others
continue that cause.”

Astronomers have discovered a thin atmosphere around a small object in the outer
solar system for the first time. The object was long thought too small to hold an
atmosphere.
:Thousands of icy bodies called trans-Neptunian objects(TNOs)(海王星外天体)lie
in the Kuiper Belt at the solar system's far end.Pluto, the largest TNO,is the only one
with a thin atmosphere.Smaller TNOs were believed unable to keep atmospheres due to
their weak gravity and cold temperatures.
Recently,a Japanese team spotted a thin atmosphere around a TNO named 2002
XV93.While Pluto is 2,377 km wide,2002 XV93 is only about 500 km across.The
discovery changes our understanding of small Kuiper Belt objects.
In January 2024,the team observed a rare event-2002 XV93 passed in front of a
bright star.This is called a stellar occultation(恒星掩星).As it moved,the star's light
weakened slowly, not sharply.A sharp drop means no atmosphere;a slow weakening
indicates gas is changing the light's path. The data showed a brightness change lasting
about 1.5 seconds-clear evidence of a very thin atmosphere around 2002 XV93.
The atmosphere is 5-10 million times thinner than Earth's.Scientists think two
things could cause it.First, ice volcanoes might give out gases from beneath 2002
XV93's surface.Second,an impact from a space rock could also give out gases. An
atmosphere caused by an impact might only last hundreds of years. If ice volcano activity
keeps adding gas,the atmosphere could last much longer.
Scientists plan more observations and will use the James Webb Space Telescope to
study its makeup.Dr.Scott Sheppard,a TNO expert,called the finding exciting."It
shows the Kuiper Belt is not cold and dead but full of activity,"he said. This
breakthrough opens a new window into how small worlds can hold atmospheres.
28.Why did people believe smaller TNOs had no atmospheres?
A.Too icy surfaces.
B.Frequent space rock hits.
C.Low gravity and cold weather.
D.Great distance from the Sun.

29.How did the Japanese team prove 2002 XV93 has an atmosphere?
A.By studying the ice on its surface.
B.By analyzing data of ice volcanoes.
C.By observing a gradual drop in starlight.
D.By measuring its exact size and shape.
30.What does the underlined word "it"in paragraph 5 refer to?
A.Earth's air.

C.An ice volcano.

The traditional way of building Chinese wooden arch (bridges is truly
striking.Found mainly in Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, these bridges are built without
any metal nails(),relying instead on wooden pieces skillfully fitted together. This
building method was added to UNESCO's cultural heritage list in December 2024.
However, this ancient skill faces serious challenges. The bridges are easily damaged by
fire and flooding, and the skill is at risk of being lost as few young people take up the
trade.
Now,modern technology is giving new life to it.
Hu Junfeng,a 28-year-old keeper of the tradition, quit his job in Shanghai and
returned to his hometown in Zhejiang in 2022.He uses drones (and digital
cameras to record and build detailed 3D models of the old bridges."Not everyone can
visit these bridges in person,"he explains."I want to let more people enjoy them
digitally.Even if a physical bridge is someday lost, its digital record will live on."His
work has formed a valuable database that keeps the bridges'structures(for future
generations.
Beyond digital records, the future holds even more promising possibilities.
Traditionally, the skill was passed down through years of face-to-face direct training
with a master. This method is slow and limited by a shortage of experienced teachers.
AI offers a solution.According to Zheng Weigui from the Zhejiang Cultural Heritage
Center,AI can act as an "online master."In the near future, visitors to museums may
practice putting together bridge structures while AI observes their movements and offers
real-time guidance. This technology will make learning the ancient skill accessible to
more people.
Technology, from 3D modeling to AI,is ensuring that the wisdom of ancient
Chinese bridge builders will continue to inspire generations to come.It is not replacing
tradition, but providing it with a powerful new voice.
32.What makes the wooden arch bridges special?

34.How will AI help people learn the skill according to Zheng Weigui?
A.By observing teachers'movements.
B.By providing quick advice in practice.
C.By passing down the skills face to face.
D.By choosing good learners for masters.

My husband and I decided to visit a nice quiet beach, which was about a three-hour
drive from the nearby city of Barton. We planned to go back home by ourselves in the
evening because we thought we could catch the last local train to Barton. Our daughter,
who lived in Barton, kindly offered to pick us up,but we didn't want to bother her.We
were confident in our ability to find our way back,so we firmly turned down her offer.
We had a great time at the beach and decided to return to Barton at six in the
evening. My husband has a very good memory and a good sense of direction,so I just
blindly followed him without knowing where we were heading. However,we soon
found ourselves going around in circles. The streets all looked the same, and we just
couldn't find the station! That day was a Sunday,so the roads were very quiet and there
were not many people around. We saw a few passers-by,but at first we felt too shy to
ask them for directions. We started to get really worried.
Just then,we saw a young local man walking towards us.We approached him and
explained the trouble we faced. On hearing our problem,he kindly walked us to the
station. It turned out that the station was only a few blocks away from where we were!
We arrived there soon, feeling greatly relieved. So,we took out the few dollar coins we
had and put them into the ticket machine's coin slot ()However,the coins just
fell out immediately. We tried again and again, but the machine didn't print our tickets
at all!To make things worse,we learned that the last train would leave in just half an
hour.
