As a boy,John Kerr wanted to be a fireman or a park ranger (护林员).Looking back on that childhood dream,he says,“This is exactly what I was longing for.”
Instead, after graduation,he spent four decades at WGBH in Boston, one of the public broadcasting stations. He retired in 2005 at the age of 65 without any particular post-career goal in mind. After several aimless weeks,he decided to drive his camper to visit family in Jackson Hole,Wyoming.
During the trip,he stopped at the Yellowstone Park Foundation, which raises funds for Yellowstone,America's first national park.As it happened, the foundation was hiring people to educate park guests on wolves.Later,Kerr signed up for the position as an intern (实习生).
Kerr stood out in the intern crowd — most of them were college and even high school students. But,in a sense,he had been prepared for this since his youth. His outdoor adventures with his grandfather had given him a love to nature, and as an adult,he had helped out at the local fire department on medical calls.
He also had something else. There are 31 million Americans between the ages of 44 and 70—some retired and looking for a third act, some looking for a more satisfying career—searching for something where they feel as if they are making a contribution, doing something to make their neighborhood, their country, their world just a little bit better.Kerr also had that deep urge to do something more.
From his internship,he moved up to ranger, educating park visitors, ensuring safe encounters between guests and animals, and responding to medical emergencies. He values his stewardship of what he describes as one of the most beautiful places on Earth, and appreciates the moments when he treats a visitor to an up-close look at one of the park's wolves or bears through his telescope.“These are rich and all-too-rare moments,” recalls Kerr.“I will never forget them.”

How long have you been in your job? If you're climbing a career ladder, how long do you intend to stay on it? It's hard to know when to jump__ship and to do something different, and it's even more problematic to decide whether to quit if you don't have a new job to do.
In the past,a job for life was just that—something you did throughout your working life.Being loyal to one company came with many perks and job security. But these days, there are many more opportunities to switch your career path,so it's normal to have many jobs listed on your CV.It's accepted that our goals change,so quitting one job for another shows how versatile (多面手的) and adaptable we are.
According to insurance firm LV,a worker in the UK will change his employer every five years on average. In the US,it's even shorter, with people staying with a single employer for just over four years.Victoria Bethlehem said that she looks favourably on a prospective employee who has changed roles every three to five years.
While it's good to pursue new work challenges,is quitting your job for no job at all career suicide? It's risky, but it can give you a chance to follow your dreams.Murugan Pandian,an expert, says,“If you are that miserable in your job, then sometimes it helps to quit, reassess your priorities in life and then come up with a more creative job-hunting strategy.”
Of course resigning from your job is scary—there is the fear of the unknown, but for some,no job is better than a thankless one.The recent pandemic has certainly made people think twice about their career priorities, and with workers being forced back to the office, some of them may be tempted to leave their job without having a new role to go to.But no job means no money,so quitting needs careful thought, although it could lead you down a whole new career path.
5.What does the underlined phrase “jump ship” in paragraph 1 mean?
A.Leave the ship without permission.
B.Quit your job.
C.Take a risk when in trouble.
D.Act bravely in face of danger.
6.What can we infer from the second paragraph?
A.People change their goals for a career.
B.People like being loyal to a company now.
C.Now it's more common for people to change their jobs.
D.People prefer job security in modern times.
7.What is Murugan's attitude towards quitting a job?
A.Negative. B.Neutral.
C.Indifferent. D.Approving.
8.Which is TRUE according to the last paragraph?
A.One should be cautious to quit a job.
B.What you have is better than none.
C.One can't resign his job for money.
D.A new job means an unknown future.

根据第二段“But these days, there are many more opportunities...on your CV.”

3.E 根据空前内容可知,E项中的“in the office”和“them”呼应上文提到的“supervisor”和“co-workers”,E项讲述缓解办公室内产生的职业倦怠的方法,符合文意。

根据后面的时间状语early on Thursday可知,用一般过去时,The guideline和release是被动关系,又因主语The guideline为单数,故填was released。
In the past few years可知,此处用现在完成时,provide和the gig economy之间是主动关系,又因主语the gig economy为单数,故填has provided。
