Looking to step off the beaten path of traditional museums? These four museums in the U.S. let visitors explore spaces where history, art, and innovation (革新) combine in unexpected ways.
Idaho Potato Museum, Blackfoot, Idaho
For food lovers, this museum is a must-visit. It shows how potatoes have shaped the local economy. Visitors can explore the development of potato farming, discover different varieties, and view related collections. It proves that even a common vegetable can be attractive.
Museum of Bad Art, Boston, Massachusetts
Unlike traditional museums showing masterpieces, this one proudly exhibits “bad art”. Visitors can enjoy funny works like Lucy in the Field with Flowers and try to guess the stories behind them. It reminds us that art is about expression and creativity, not just technical perfection.
Museum of Ice Cream, New York City, New York
This museum offers a sweet experience. Its pink walls and colorful rooms make perfect backdrops for photos. Inside, guests can explore the science behind making ice cream and play in the Sprinkle (糖粒) Pool filled with plastic candy sprinkles. The biggest highlight is that visitors have access to different ice cream varieties throughout their visit. Both your inner child and your children will have a great time at the Museum of Ice Cream.
Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Washington, D. C.
History and science fans should not miss this stop. It houses legendary objects such as the Wright Flyer and the Apollo 11 command module (舱). An exhibition on the Space Race further explains the intense competition between the U. S. and the Soviet Union. Whether you love history or science, there is always something new to discover here.

Parisima Taeb and her 9-year-old daughter, Darya Haija, were heading home from their local grocery store when Darya spotted a group of homeless people in a nearby lot. “Where do they sleep?” she asked her mom, worried. “There are shelters that try to help them,” Parisima explained, but Darya wasn’t satisfied. “Where do they get money for food? How can I help?” she pressed on, but this time her mom had no answer.
“Let me ask your teacher,” Parisima said. “Maybe she knows how you can help. ”“Your timing couldn’t be better,” Darya’s teacher said the next afternoon when Parisima approached. “The school is starting a food drive. Darya is welcome to help!”
Excited, Darya and her classmates collected canned goods and helped sort them for a local food bank. “Maybe there’s more I can do,” she thought as the food drive ended.
Darya loved making jewelry at home. “What do you think?” she asked her mom, showing off a beaded bracelet (珠链). “It’s beautiful!” Parisima smiled, and the next afternoon, Darya made another. Soon she had 20 and then she began decorating pens. “I’m going to sell them and raise money for the homeless,” Darya declared. “Where should the money go?”
Parisima researched shelters and visited several with Darya. One of them, Fort Myers Women and Children Shelter, really touched Darya’s heart. “This is the one,” Darya decided, and soon she was going door-to-door selling her bracelets and pens.
People were touched by the little girl’s kindness and almost everyone she spoke to bought something. When Darya raised $1,000, Parisima helped her open a bank account and write a check. “This is for you,” she told Rachel McKinnon, director of Fort Myers Women and Children’s Shelter. “This will help us buy food and supplies for residents,” McKinnon said gratefully, but for Darya, it was just the beginning.
For her latest and greatest project, Darya has made 100 bracelets, and she’s inviting friends to join a large community sale. “People need food and a place to sleep,” she says. “I love helping them in every possible way.”
4. What did Darya do immediately after the school food drive finished?
A. She began to make jewelry at home.
B. She went door-to-door to sell pens.
C. She opened a bank account to save money.
D. She figured out more ways to help the homeless.
5. Why did Darya and her mother visit several shelters before donating?
A. To get advice on running a charity activity.
B. To look for people to sell her bracelets to.
C. To pick a suitable shelter for her donations.
D. To collect daily supplies for homeless people there.
6. What can we infer from people’s warm response to Darya’s sale?
A. Parisima helped promote Darya’s products.
B. People were moved by Darya’s kind heart.
C. Homeless people needed the products badly.
D. Darya’s products were very cheap and beautiful.
7. Which of the following can best describe Darya?
A. Warm-hearted and helpful.
B. Shy and thoughtful.
C. Creative and curious.
D. Confident and humorous.

Simply using food packaging as intended can introduce microplastics (微塑料) into your food. A review of 103 studies found that everyday actions, like opening a plastic bottle or using a plastic cutting board, can release tiny particles (微粒) of plastic.
A team led by biologist Lisa Zimmermann from the Swiss non-profit Food Packaging Forum states that the problem is ubiquitous. “This is the first systematic evidence of how normal and intended use of foodstuffs packaged in plastics can be polluted with microplastics,” said Zimmermann.
The deeper scientists explore micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs), the clearer their widespread presence becomes. These are tiny pieces of material, too small to see, released by different plastic products as they’re used or break down in the environment. Plastic is cheap and useful for storing things and making clothes. However, over the years, we’ve learned that even though plastic doesn’t break down easily, it can still turn into very small pieces. These tiny particles spread easily in the environment.
Scientists have found microplastics in nearly every part of the human body. Most worryingly, their health impacts remain largely unknown, yet early findings are alarming. Zimmermann and her team examined 103 studies that have investigated the presence of plastic particles in food. From these studies, they extracted 600 entries about food contact articles, of which 96 percent reported the presence of MNPs.
Notably, the researchers found that several studies link reusable plastic items — such as melamine bowls — to a rise in microplastic release with each wash. The researchers also note that ultra-processed (超加工) food contains more microplastics than minimally processed ones. The reason for this is simple: more processing steps mean greater exposure to plastic food-processing equipment, resulting in more MNPs in the final product.
The researchers’ findings strongly suggest that not only is further in-depth research badly needed, but also effective measures should be taken to cut plastic use in food packaging and processing.
8. What can we learn about microplastics from the first paragraph?
A. They are released by improper use of plastic packaging.
B. They can enter food through normal use of packaging.
C. They are mainly found in plastic bottles and cutting boards.
D. They have been fully studied by scientists around the world.
9. What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Common everywhere. B. Harmful to health.
C. Difficult to discover. D. Hard to avoid completely.
10. What contributes to ultra-processed food’s higher microplastic levels?
A. Prolonged storage in plastic containers.
B. Greater use of plastic packaging.
C. Higher content of man-made additives.
D. More contact with plastic processing tools.
11. What is the main purpose of the text?
A. To promote the use of reusable plastic items.
B. To explain the health risks of processed food.
C. To raise awareness of microplastics from plastic use.
D. To introduce the applications of plastic food packaging.

Union Terrace Gardens in Aberdeen has been named the winner of the Andrew Doolan Best Building in Scotland Award. Designed by Stallan-Brand Architecture, it’s a public space in the city centre. After years of being ignored, the project has brought the gardens back to life. It introduced new architectural elements and restored old features, creating a safe, people-friendly public area.
Originally opened in 1879, the gardens had suffered from years of decline. The recent £28.3 million refurbishment (翻修) has transformed them into an energetic and accessible heart for the community. Located near cultural sites like Aberdeen Art Gallery, the renewed gardens now welcome everyone.
The design combines new structures with restored historic features. Three lantern-like pavilions (亭子), inspired by the city’s old trams, house a cafe, restaurant, and wine bar. Historic features, including statues, railings, and Victorian toilets, have been faithfully restored. The landscape combines green planting, play areas, event spaces, and an aerial walkway, creating a harmonious environment.
The head judge said the project is a great success. It turned an old, forgotten space into a popular place that brings people together. She highlighted that the ten-year effort by Aberdeen City Council shows the city’s strong devotion, resulting in a high-quality and green public space.
The lead architect described the gardens as the “beating heart of Aberdeen,” showcasing how thoughtful urban renewal can reverse (扭转) centre decline. The president of the Royal Corporation of Architects in Scotland praises the project as a perfect example of how architecture improves public life, noting its skillful combination of modern design, heritage conservation, and landscape.
This award-winning transformation has returned the gardens to the people of Aberdeen as a valued place for current and future generations to enjoy.
12. What was the primary outcome of the £28.3 million refurbishment?
A. It built new cultural sites near the Art Gallery.
B. It changed the gardens into a community center.
C. It mainly focused on restoring Victorian toilets.
D. It constructed three large restaurants and cafes.
13. What can we learn about the three new pavilions?
A. They are built beside ancient stone statues.
B. They were built with green planting inside.
C. They share the same style as the art gallery nearby.
D. Their design draws inspiration from historical trams.
14. What is the lead architect’s main point about the project?
A. It highlights the limits of urban renewal.
B. It revives the city through thoughtful redesign.
C. It shows heritage matters more than function.
D. It proves design can drive social change greatly.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Old Trams Shaped Aberdeen’s New Gardens
B. New Cafes Open in Union Terrace Gardens
C. Scottish Gardens Win Top Architecture Prize
D. Public Spaces Need More Government Funding

Graduation doesn’t mark the end of learning — true lifelong learners know that. In this text, we’ll explore five simple steps to help seniors embrace (拥抱) lifelong learning and continue growing every day.
●Stay curious about the world.
Curiosity keeps lifelong learners young at heart. ____16____ Each adventure — whether it’s wandering through a museum, getting lost in a new city, or trying a new recipe — turns into an opportunity to learn. They dive into new cultures, accept new ideas, and change how they view the world.
●Make time for daily learning.
Lifelong learners know that learning fits into small pockets of time. They dedicate just 15-30 minutes a day to reading or puzzles. For example, they might read a chapter of a book before bed, solve a crossword puzzle over morning coffee, or watch an online video to pick up a skill, like gardening or painting. ____17____
●Embrace challenges instead of avoiding them.
New things can feel impossible, but lifelong learners take it one step at a time. They take up yoga even as beginners, or try out new technology when they feel confused. ____18____ Instead of saying, “I can’t do that,” they ask, “How can I learn this?”
●Set learning goals, big or small.
Goals give lifelong learners something to work toward. ____19____ Achieving wins — big or small — fuels their excitement to keep going.
●____20____
Lifelong learners know learning happens in good company. As the age-old saying goes,“If you’re the smartest person in the room, you’re in the wrong room. ” They join local book clubs, take community center classes, or connect with neighbors who share their interests.
A. It’s about consistency — not perfection.
B. Learning alone allows them to focus better.
C. Surround yourself with instructors and like-minded people.
D. They ask questions, try new things, and never stop exploring.
E. They write down what they want to learn and celebrate progress.
F. Lifelong learners know facing challenges helps them grow stronger.
G. Sharing insights with others can deepen understanding and inspire new ideas.

“Here they come!” 15-year-old Alexa Billstrom shouted, looking into the hallway. Her older sister, Jordyn, had spent the summer in hospital receiving treatment for a serious blood disease. Jordyn felt sad and lonely until a hospital volunteer brought in a therapy (治疗) dog. Jordyn, who loved dogs, looked forward to every visit. The dog’s warm company lifted her spirits a lot.
After a bone operation, Jordyn made a full recovery and went back home. However, Alexa never forgot how much happiness the therapy dog had brought her sister. Inspired, she decided to act. She had her dog, Molly, trained and certified (认证) as a therapy dog. But something even more meaningful was about to happen.
Alexa had always dreamed of owning a horse. Her parents told her she could get one only if she could cover all its purchase and upkeep costs. So, she saved every penny from her part-time job at a pizza shop. When she finally had enough money, she realized the cost of feeding and housing a full-sized horse was too high. Then she had an idea: why not get a smaller horse? She searched online and found a rescue group for small horses. One photo caught her eye. “He’s lovely!” she said. The little horse was named Sawdust. She paid the fee, and the shelter sent him to a nearby stable.
At first, Sawdust was hard to manage. He pulled on the rope, stood on his back legs, and tried to run away. But Alexa was patient. She spent many afternoons and evenings calming him down, brushing him, and teaching him. Slowly, he improved. “He’s finally learning,” she told the residents at the nursing home where she had just started working. They begged to meet him, even though she explained he wasn’t yet a certified therapy animal. To everyone’s surprise, the visit went wonderfully. One lady hugged him and said, “Hi, sweetheart.”
Soon, other nursing homes invited him to visit. Alexa found an organization that certifies therapy horses. She prepared him carefully, letting him get used to loud machines, wheelchairs, and other facilities.

Dear Mr. Davis,
I am Li Hua, an exchange student from China. I am writing to bring to your attention some issues regarding the locker room in the gym.
Recently, I have noticed that the floors are often wet and slippery, with litter lying around, which poses a safety risk. Additionally, several lockers are old and damaged, making it difficult to store belongings safely.
I sincerely hope that regular cleaning and maintenance can be arranged. Placing “Wet Floor” signs and repairing the lockers would greatly improve the experience for all users. Thank you for your time and understanding.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】
Finally, Sawdust passed his test and began visiting children’s hospitals or nursing homes. Wearing his official blue vest, he walked calmly through busy corridors, bringing smiles to patients of all ages. Children eagerly held out apple slices and carrots, their eyes shining with delight as Sawdust gently took treats from their palms. “He knows exactly who needs him most,” Alexa often observed, watching him approach a lonely elder or a nervous child. The little horse had transformed from a frightened rescue into a confident healer, his golden coat shining under bright lights.
Alexa still gives her free time to Sawdust’s mission. Together they attend community events, raising funds and spreading awareness about therapy animals. Last year alone, they completed over ninety visits. “When he first arrived, he hated the truck,” Alexa recalled, “but now he jumps right in because he knows we’re bringing joy to others.” Standing beside her small partner, she sees Jordyn’s happy smile reflected on countless faces. That summer in the hospital had planted a seed of kindness, which has now become something far beyond her wildest dreams.
