B At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly; pushed to name her profession, you might guess at nurse or teacher. But look closer. Easthope is an emergency planner whose job is to support the survivors of major disasters, in which capacity she acted following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and the fire at Grenfell Tower. For two decades, the public knew nothing about this vital work, which went on behind the scenes, though she was hugely admired in what we might call professional disaster circles: a voice of calm and a fountain of wisdom. But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did. “At literary festivals, most authors get questions about their writing process,” Easthope says. “But I wouldn’t get those. What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. But this wasn’t enough.” In the end, she felt she had no choice but to write a second book, one in which she would try to distill (浓缩) all that she has learned for the benefit of each individual. While her publisher describes Come What May as a roadmap for resilience (韧性), the word is one Easthope dislikes. Ready, she suggests, is a better one. Easthope also reminds people that small things, like losing hair during illness or consuming too much food after someone dies, still matter. She encourages people to remember, not to forget, what happened during disasters, because such events leave a long-lasting effect. 4. What might a Cassandra be like according to paragraph 1? A. Severe and forbidding. B. Competent and cautious. C. Friendly and energetic. D. Cheerful and approachable. 5. What led to increased public awareness of Easthope’s work in 2023? A. The publication of a best seller. B. The growth of professional disaster circles. C. Her involvement in 2004 tsunami relief. D. Her sudden rise to fame through media. 6. Why are readers’ questions cited in paragraph 3? A. To reveal Easthope’s personal fears. B. To explain Easthope’s writing process. C. To show Easthope’s writing motivation. D. To present public doubts about Easthope’s work. 7. What does Easthope agree on handling disasters? A. Resilience matters most. B. Forgetting aids recovery. C. Positive thinking takes the lead. D. Minor sufferings deserve attention. C Think about the last time you checked your performance ranking at work, glanced at your class ranking, or figured out your fantasy football standings. Where you landed in that list, as many people assume, probably shaped how hard you pushed next. But the reality is more interesting. Motivation does not rise smoothly with rank. It bends. In a study published in Management Science, Victoria Prowse and her colleagues designed an experiment to isolate exactly how rank in a group affects effort. Participants repeatedly chose how hard to work and learned their rank after each round. The results were striking. People who were told they ranked first increased their effort by 21 percent compared to the average. Those ranked last increased their effort by 13 percent. And those stuck in the middle? Their effort actually dropped by more than 10 percent. This pattern- effort increasing at both extremes and decreasing in the middle — held regardless of gender, age, or field of study. Notably, pay was completely disconnected from performance. People worked harder at the top and bottom purely for psychological reasons. At the top, the pattern is consistent with motives such as pride or the thrill of winning. At the bottom, it could be driven by a discomfort with being last. In a worldfull of rankings, these findings carry real weight. “Employee of the Month” awards and coaching for the lowest performers tend to generate real motivation. However, blanket rankings risk demoralizing those who keep the gears turning. Structuring teams into smaller comparison groups can help, encouraging the first-place energy. Meanwhile, providing detailed rankings to average workers may be harmful, because they are most likely to stay loyal, show up consistently but get annoyed when told they are ordinary. The next time you see a ranking, notice where you land and take proper action. At the top, energy surges. At the bottom, the urge to climb can match it. In the middle, recognize and resist the subtle pull to ease up. 8. What is a common misunderstanding of ranking? A. It is widely used in the workplace. B. It pressures people to some extent. C. It motivates more as rank rises. D. It is closely related to financial rewards. 9. Which of the following best illustrates the pattern of the study? A. B. C. D. 10. What does the author suggest employers do? A. Give rankings widely. B. Use rankings selectively. C. Treat performers equally. D. Coach employees intensively. 11. What is the author’s attitude toward Victoria’s studies? A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. D The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chatbots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. These toys are flexible enough to conduct limited conversations with children and to respond to them just as they finish talking. Are these interactions enough to provide the “personalized education” one company claimed? Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development? The more language that is addressed to children, the bigger their vocabulary will be. But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive. Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children’s language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede children’s language learning. When a caregiver describes something that a child is interested in, children can learn its name. A chatbot is less able to teach children about their environments because it cannot see and describe a toy the child is holding. Even if it could see, it does not have prior knowledge about the toys a child owns. Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words — they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child’s attention. Finally, children are also seeking further information about the sounds of their language. The caregivers’ repetition of the word emphasizes its name while also giving the child more information about the sound of the word. If the child mispronounces the word, the caregiver will likely emphasize the correct pronunciation. Commercially available chatbots can’t reliably do this. Quality language expands on what toddlers (学步的儿童) know, takes the child’s perspective and past history into consideration, and responds to children’s questions. We have seen some work that shows social robots can help preschool children learn vocabulary, and that conversational agents who ask older children to respond to educational television programs can help children learn. However, we need more research to know the effects these robots have on babies’ and toddlers’ language learning. Until that happens, we believe that the humans in toddlers’ lives are responsible for conducting the conversations that grow children’s language. As a researcher and his teammates state, “Our babies shouldn’t be lab mice for toy companies.” 12. What is the function of the first paragraph? A. To point out a problem. B. To present a phenomenon. C. To put forward the viewpoint. D. To introduce the topic. 13. What does the underlined word “impede” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Prevent. B. Facilitate. C. Secure. D. Maintain. 14. What can a caregiver do to help children learn a language? A. Provide interaction in context. B. Emphasize their names. C. Weaken their attention. D. Repeat grammar rules. 15. Which of the following is the best title of the passage? A. Is It Necessary to Interact with Caregivers? B. Will AI-Powered Toys Be a New Toy Trend? C. Are Caregivers the Secret to Kids’ Overall Development? D. Can AI-Powered Toys Help Toddlers Learn Language? About a year ago, our dishwasher broke down. For three days, her morning newspaper Riverdale Gazette had disappeared from its usual spot by the front door. Each morning, she’d glance through her lace curtains at precisely 6:45 a.m., only to find the empty driveway where the newspapers should have been. Her suspicion, like the frost, grew steadily colder and it settled firmly on her new next-door neighbors, the Carters. The Carters moved in two months ago — a young couple with twin boys. To Mrs. Henderson’s ordered mind, their home was a symphony of cheerful chaos: brightly colored plastic toys spreading across the yard, a tricycle lying on its side by the walkway, and the constant energetic screams of children at play. Newspapers were clearly part of their household mess. The final straw came on Thursday. Not only was her paper gone, but a beautiful, prize-worthy rose from her front garden bed had been taken clean off. Mrs. Henderson, a champion gardener for twenty years, felt a hot wave of anger. This was no accident: this was damage on purpose! She pictured a small hand reaching through the fence. Enough was enough. With purpose, she marched next door and rang the bell of the Carters, thinking she should give the boys a lesson. Mr. Carter answered, looking pleasantly surprised but slightly confused, with a child holding onto each leg and a naughty dog circling his feet. “Mrs, Henderson! What a lovely surprise!” Before she could launch into her prepared speech about community respect and property, her eyes slid past him into the hallway. There, neatly stood on a small table beside an umbrella stand, were three copies of Riverdale Gazette. Following her eyes, Mr. Carter’s expression turned to understanding and mild embarrassment. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Realizing she was wrong about the boys, Mrs. Henderson’s prepared words were gone. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 绝密★启用前 深圳外国语学校2025-2026学年度高二第二学期期末考试 英语试题 满分130分, 考试时间120分钟。 A Turnitin is an assessment tool to check similarity for text-based submissions. 根据第一段“Turnitin is an assessment tool to check similarity for text-based submissions. It compares a submitted assessment against a database of other papers and journals to detect similarity. (Turnitin是一款用于检测文字提交内容相似度的评估工具。它会将提交的评估材料与数据库中的其他论文和期刊进行比对,以识别其中的相似之处)”可知,Turnitin 可以用来检查文本的原创性。故选C项。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据图片中的流程图内容“Will the submission be text-based in a typical text-based format? Yes.(提交的内容会是以典型的纯文本格式呈现的吗?是)”及“1 student,1 submission(一个学生,一次提交)”可知,提交内容是标准文本格式的文本类内容,单个学生的独立提交。故选B项。 【3题详解】 细节理解题。根据Instructions部分“You can use the instructions area to provide information or directions that are specific to this assignment, for example, if you want students to use their student number as the name of the work when they upload it.(您可以利用Instructions区域来提供与本次作业相关的特定信息或说明,例如,如果您希望学生在上传作业时使用其学号作为作业的名称)”可知,说明栏Instructions区域可以用于填写作业布置的具体要求。故选B项。 B At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. To present public doubts about Easthope’s work. 7. What does Easthope agree on handling disasters? A. Resilience matters most. B. Forgetting aids recovery. C. Positive thinking takes the lead. D. Minor sufferings deserve attention. A 5. A 6. C 7. 根据第一段中“At first sight, Easthope doesn’t seem much like a Cassandra. She smiles a lot. Her manner is kind and motherly... (乍一看,Easthope不太像一位Cassandra。她笑容满面。她的举止亲切、充满母性)”可知,作者将Easthope的外在表现与“Cassandra”进行对比,Easthope给人的印象是亲切的、面带微笑的,因此与之相反的“Cassandra”形象应更偏向于严肃、令人敬畏的。故选A项。 根据第二段中“But in 2023, she published a best-selling book about her career, When the Dust Settles, and that changed. People became very interested in what she did. (但在2023年,她出版了一本关于她职业生涯的畅销书《尘埃落定时》,情况发生了变化。人们开始对她所做的工作非常感兴趣)”可知,2023年公众对Easthope工作认知度的提高,源于她出版了一本畅销书。故选A项。 根据第三段中“What people wanted from me was to know how I lived with the knowledge that I have. Wasn’t I afraid? How did I handle? I would tell them that I didn’t live afraid, and I would give them basic advice. (伊斯索普还提醒人们,一些小事,比如生病时脱发或某人去世后暴饮暴食,仍然很重要)”可知,伊斯索普认为微小的痛苦(小事情)也值得关注。故选D项。 C Think about the last time you checked your performance ranking at work, glanced at your class ranking, or figured out your fantasy football standings. A. Unclear. B. Dismissive. C. Doubtful. D. Approving. C 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段“Where you landed in that list, as many people assume, probably shaped how hard you pushed next. But the reality is more interesting. Motivation does not rise smoothly with rank. It bends.(正如许多人所认为的那样,你在榜单中的位置可能决定了你接下来的努力程度。但现实情况更有趣:动机并不会随着排名而平滑上升,而是会有所弯曲)”可知,随着排名上升,激励作用会增强是对排名的常见误解。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“People who were told they ranked first increased their effort by 21 percent compared to the average. Those ranked last increased their effort by 13 percent. And those stuck in the middle? Their effort actually dropped by more than 10 percent. This pattern- effort increasing at both extremes and decreasing in the middle — held regardless of gender, age, or field of study.(被评定为第一的人员,其努力程度比平均水平高出21%;排名最后的人则提高了13%。 根据倒数第二段“However, blanket rankings risk demoralizing those who keep the gears turning. Structuring teams into smaller comparison groups can help, encouraging the first-place energy. Meanwhile, providing detailed rankings to average workers may be harmful, because they are most likely to stay loyal, show up consistently but get annoyed when told they are ordinary.(然而,一刀切的排名可能会让那些继续前进的人士气低落。 D The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chatbots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. D 13. A 14. A 15. 根据第一段中的“The toy industry is pushing forward with AI chatbots built into stuffed animals and mini robots. These toys are flexible enough to conduct limited conversations with children and to respond to them just as they finish talking. Are these interactions enough to provide the “personalized education” one company claimed? Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development? (玩具行业正在大力推进将AI聊天机器人内置到毛绒玩具和小型机器人中。这类玩具能够灵活地与孩子进行有限对话,并在孩子说完话后及时回应。这些互动是否足以实现某家公司所宣称的“个性化教育”?像库里奥的格雷姆这样的玩具对儿童的语言发展是有益还是有害?)”可知,第一段先介绍AI智能玩具的现象,再提出相关疑问,目的是引出文章话题。故选D项。 【13题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Research shows that chatbot talk is unlikely to improve young children’s language outcomes. In fact, if allowed to replace conversations with caregivers, these toys may impede children’s language learning.(研究表明,聊天机器人的对话不太可能改善幼儿的语言能力。事实上,如果用这些玩具替代与看护者的交流,它们可能会impede儿童的语言学习。)”可知,前一句指出聊天机器人无法提升孩子语言能力,后一句用“in fact”进一步说明负面影响,因此“impede”表示“阻碍、阻止”,与prevent含义一致。故选A项。 根据第二段中的“But these vocabulary words are not learned because they were spoken out of context, as current AI-infused toys do, but from caregivers who make the words come alive.(但这些词汇并非像当前AI玩具那样脱离语境习得,而是通过看护者让词汇变得生动鲜活而学会的。)”和第三段中的“Language skills do not grow from simply hearing lots of words — they grow from hearing words in conversations that capture the child’s attention.(语言技能并非单纯通过听大量单词形成,而是源于在能吸引孩子注意力的对话中聆听词汇。)” 故选A项。 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“Will toys like Curio’s Grem help or harm children’s language development?(像库里奥的格雷姆这样的玩具对儿童的语言发展是有益还是有害?)” About a year ago, our dishwasher broke down. Following personal passion isn’t selfish; it fuels lasting motivation that no external push can match. Writing lets me express true thoughts and connect with others deeply, which feels more meaningful than chasing trends or meeting others’ expectations. While I respect my parents’ hopes and acknowledge societal needs, only doing what I love brings genuine fulfillment. I’ll strive to balance dreams with reality, turning passion into a career that enriches both my life and the world around me. Possible Version 2: Choosing a Path with Purpose Faced with the three directions shown in the cartoon — parents’ wish, society’s trend, and my own dream—my choice would be to follow society’s trend. Some may argue that pursuing one’s own dream is the only way to true happiness. However, I believe that aligning with societal trends does not mean giving up personal ambition. Instead, it means understanding the needs of the world and finding where one can contribute meaningfully. Many of today’s most rewarding careers — in fields like green technology, digital innovation, and public health — are also society’s current directions. By choosing such a path, I can ensure that my work has real value and relevance. This choice is not about blindly following the crowd, but about thoughtfully connecting my abilities with broader needs. In this way, I can build a stable future while still growing personally and making a tangible difference in the world. Faced with parents’ wish, society’s trend and my own dream, I firmly choose to pursue my lifelong dream of being a writer. When I am faced with my parents’ wish, society’s trend and my own dream, I firmly choose to pursue my lifelong dream of being a writer. 1】Writing lets me express true thoughts and connect with others deeply, which feels more meaningful than chasing trends or meeting others’ expectations.(运用了which引导的非限制性定语从句)  【高分句型2】While I respect my parents’ hopes and acknowledge societal needs, only doing what I love brings genuine fulfillment.(运用了while引导的让步状语从句和what引导的宾语从句) 第二节 (满分25分) 57. The first frost of November painted Mrs. Henderson’s rose bushes silver, but her mood was anything but cheerful. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】范文 Following her eyes, Mr. Carter’s expression turned to understanding and mild embarrassment. “Oh, dear,” he said, scratching his head. “Those are your newspapers. Our naughty dog keeps picking them up before I can stop him.” It seemed that the naughty dog took it as a praise, wagging its tail and circling happily around them. Mr. Carter bent down, picked up one of the papers and went on, “I meant to return them and apologize. Mornings here are always a bit crazy.” Then Mrs. Henderson even pictured the dog biting off her rose running around. Realizing she was wrong about the boys, Mrs. Henderson’s prepared words were gone. For a moment, embarrassment rooted her to the spot, with her face burning hot. A wave of guilt washed over her as she looked at the shy boys she had blamed. “I... I thought it was the...” her voice much softer than before. Mrs. Henderson then turned to the twins and invited them to see her garden someday. The boys’ eyes lit up at once. As she walked back home with the papers, it dawned on her that suspicion, like frost, could chill the heart, but kindness had the power to melt it away. 词汇激活 行为类 ①继续:go on/carry on ②打算做某事:mean to do sth./intend to do sth. ③想象:picture/imagine 情绪类 ①高兴地:happily/cheerfully ②尴尬:embarrassment/awkwardness 【点睛】[高分句型1] For a moment, embarrassment rooted her to the spot, with her face burning hot.(运用了with的复合结构作状语) [高分句型2] As she walked back home with the papers, it dawned on her that suspicion, like frost, could chill the heart, but kindness had the power to melt it away.(运用了as引导时间状语从句,that引导宾语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
