“It can’t be done.” Boyan Slat heard this over and over when he first suggested a way to clean up millions of tons of plastic polluting our oceans.
Slat was on a diving (潜水) trip in Greece three years ago when he was troubled by plastic. “There were more plastic bags than fish,” he says. “That moment I realized it was a huge problem and that environmental problems are really the biggest problems we will face.”
That fall, Slat, then 17, decided to study plastic pollution as part of a high school project. Soon, Slat learned that no one had yet thought of useful ways to clean up all the rubbish. Most people wanted to “fish” up the plastic using ships with nets—which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much, and leave sea life along with the rubbish.
Slat decided to avoid these problems: a solar-powered system (太阳能系统) using a moving plastic tube (管) which will go around the rubbish and collect it. Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube. A ship will pick up the rubbish and take it back to land.
Slat organized a team of volunteers for the Ocean Clean-up, which has about 100 members.
Over the next three to four years, Slat will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.
56. Slat first suggested cleaning up millions of tons of ________ to stop ________ the ocean.

Fun activities are important in our lives. However, they have both good and bad sides.
The good sides are great. First, they make us happy. We laugh a lot when doing interesting things. Second, they help us make friends. However, there are some bad sides. First, they can be dangerous. For example, it’s easy for us to pay no attention to the risks (风险) of some sports. And then we may get hurt. Also, some activities can make us depend on (依赖) them. If we play phone games all the time, for example, we’ll find it hard to do other things without phones.
▲ We should be careful when doing sports. Our parents can set time limits (限制) for some activities. We can also try new hobbies, so we won’t depend on certain activities all the time. This way, we can enjoy fun and stay healthy in a balanced way.

57. When Slat was diving in Greece, he found that there were ________ fishes ________ plastic bags.
58. “Fishing” up the plastic might need a ________ time and ________ too much.
59. Slat hoped the rubbish would be pushed to the tube by ________ and ________.
60. It will ________ Slat and his team over three to four years to test ________ his project is good enough or not.
56. ①. plastic ②. polluting
57. ①. fewer ②. than
58. ①. long ②. cost
59. ①. wind ②. waves
60. ①. take ②. whether
根据第一段第一句“…Boyan Slat heard this over and over when he first suggested a way to clean up millions of tons of plastic polluting our oceans.”,此处表示他提议清理塑料垃圾以阻止其污染海洋。
根据第三段“…which might need more than 1,000 years, cost too much…”,传统的捞塑料方式需要上千年并花费巨大。
根据第四段“Wind and waves will push the rubbish to the tube.”,风和海浪会把垃圾推向管道。
根据第六段第一句“Over the next three to four years, Slat will continue to test whether his project is good enough or not.”,他将在未来的三到四年继续测试该项目。①空所在句子“It will…Slat and his team…to test…”是常用固定句型“It takes/will take sb. some time to do sth.”(做某事花费某人多少时间),情态动词“will”后接动词原形,故填“take”;②空根据原文“test whether...”
