I started playing the piano when I was
around four years old-that was 15 years
ago!一and since then,the longest I haven't
touched piano keys was probably two months.
This was an enormous amount of devotion to
something that I wasn't even planning to make
暑假作业真正的价值并不在人生的舞台上,而在
money from,so there must have been something
worth holding on to,right?
The easy guess is that I was always so
purely in love with music and piano that I
couldn't bear to let them go.However,it's a bit
more complicated than that.I struggled a lot
with piano.I felt pressure to improve, innovate,
and be the best in order to prove something to
others. The seed of my musical interest was
grown with competition and doubt.
It's difficult to learn to love something that
you didn't choose in the first place. But
somehow,sometime,love grew.And by high
school,it was strong enough that I found the
strength to hold on tighter, dig further, and find
something of my own to grow.In a way,I had to
start over.
And so,I took a pause.I switched teachers,
and got incredibly lucky with one who
encouraged me and helped me tunnel into what I
loved, not what I was told I should learn.
Anything I had was good enough to be loved.
This summer,I started learning the guitar.
I deliberately wanted to learn on my own-this
was just for me,to form a new relationship to
music.Even though my guitar skills are miles
lower than my piano skills,I feel I can express
myself even more wholly through strings than
keys. There's just something about doing it all
for myself that has helped me heal the damages
to my relationship to music.
The love and hate I've had for the piano
were both planted and grown. If you too have
learned to hate something you once loved-or
something you never chose-remember that with
dedication,it can be uprooted, and love can make
a home in its place. There is always time. There
is always room.

My height embarrassed me!One of the greatest
lessons my dad taught me was to beat the jokers to
the punch..If I am going to be a punchline(笑柄),
I'd rather be the author of the joke.
There was a lot of name-calling.Some cruel,
some not.I have blocked out much of the cruel. In
junior high,a well-meaning acquaintance called
me Stretch. In university,I was Shortly brought

bump my head.Would I still want to be taller?Of
course.But I wouldn't be me.I am me because
I'm short.And I like who I am.
It's such a part of me that I cheer on fellow

Bruno Mars may be the original short king.Small

Watching a movie can be a magical
experience, but do you know that the music in
the films we watch has always been an important
part of creating that magical experience?16
The first commercial film with sound came
out in 1927.17 Even back in the early days of
silent films, most movie theatres hired a musician
or a group of musicians to provide music, mostly
to drown out the sound of the film projectors

As sound-on-film technology developed,
composers were hired to create original music for
films.Like music written for an opera, film music
serves to advance the story and the action.
18 In the same way,a film composer needs
to support the screenplay's storyline. The music
also needs to reflect the screenplay's mood,
which includes everything from the action on the
screen to sound effects to dialogue.
Music has a language of its own.The right
piece of music can improve and sometimes even

change a viewer's ideas of what is taking place
onscreen. Most of the time, music is used to
stress the action onscreen, improve the mood of a
scene, foreshadow action that is about to take
place or even show the emotion of a character.
19 But in many instances the emotional
power of the visuals would not be as great were it
not for the music.
20 Ask yourself,"How would this
scene feel if the music were different? Is the
composer trying to tell me how I should feel?Or are
they merely pushing me in an emotional direction?"
A.So,how is the film music created?
B.Without it,it would be hard to imagine the
scene.
C.An opera composer must follow the text of the
opera.
D.Usually,composers and filmmakers don't
want to overshadow a film.
E.So the next time you watch a movie, pay close
attention to the music.
F.The music in a film makes you cheer for the
hero and cry at the drama.
G.Since then, music has been powerfully linked
to the movie-watching experience.

It was September 1966,and I was twenty
years old, facing my first class of kids as a new
teacher. My class in downtown Toronto was
made up of thirty-eight angels, and one street kid
named Mike. His parents passed away when he
was a baby, and he lived with a weak and
indifferent grandmother.As for a ten-year-old
boy,he was little and rough.
Like most new, young teachers,I was full
of enthusiasm and determined to make a
difference.Being so young,I knew very little
about parenting. However,I did recognize a child
in need, and decided to see if I could make a
difference. And so my special "foster father
(养父)”relationship with Mike began.
够久够大声,终会把人唤醒的。
[每日格言]
Each day as I arrived at school,I'd take
Mike out for breakfast. Each noon hour as I
shared my lunch with him,I taught him some
new skills-for a while we worked on the proper
method of using a microscope. On another day we
constructed a camera, then we classified rocks.
Mike would then“help”me teach these skills to
the rest of the class. We had a lot of fun,and a
kind of unspoken trust began to build up between us.
Early in our special relationship,Mike told
me of his dream becoming a lawyer.I believed
then,and after thirty-four years of teaching I
still believe, that all children have a gift.
Everyone has the same opportunity to be the best
person they can be.I realized this boy was
brilliant,and that with a little love,attention,
understanding,guidance and encouragement,he
could probably accomplish whatever he put his
mind to.I figured if he wanted to be a lawyer,I
would do all I could to help him become the very
best lawyer he could be.
Every Saturday morning,I took Mike to the
Osgoode Law Library, which was attached to the
University of Toronto.I explained to him that
reading up on law was the only way to be a good
lawyer. His young mind was eager and interested.
