B Laptop computers (笔记本电脑) are popular all over the world. In the United States today, lap-tops also connect students to their classrooms. Westlake College in Virginia will start a laptop computer program whose main purpose is to allow students to do schoolwork anywhere. Within five years, each of the 1,500 students at the college will receive a laptop. The laptops are part of a $10,000,000 computer program at Westlake, a 110-year-old college. The students with lap- tops will be able to use e-mail to “speak” with their teachers, their classmates and their families, without going to computer labs. They can use it at home, in a fast-food restaurant or under the trees — anywhere at all! Because of many changes in computer technology, laptop use in higher education, such as colleges and universities, is workable. As laptops become more powerful, they can connect students to not only the Internet, but also libraries and other resources. At Westlake College, more than 60% of the staff use computers. The laptops will allow teachers to use computers in their lessons. As some Westlake teachers said, “Here we are in the middle of Virginia and we’re giving students a window on the world. They can see everything and do everything.” 24. What is the main purpose of the laptop computer program? A. To help people work at home. B. To connect students to libraries. C. To encourage students to surf the Internet. D. To allow students to do schoolwork anywhere. 25. Which of the following is true about Westlake College? A. Students must do their homework in computer labs. B. 1,500 students of the college will receive laptops. C. All the staff of the college use computers. D. It is a new college in America. 26. What’s some teachers’ attitude towards the program? A. Doubtful. B. Worrying. C. Supportive. D. Uncaring. 27. What is the best title for the text? A. A Laptop Program in Westlake College B. Laptop Computers Make People Closer C. A Famous College in Virginia: Westlake D. Computer Technology Provides Resources C Every school has students who stand out for their abilities and their eagerness (渴望) to learn. In Mexico, a school created a program to work with them. In 2019. both teachers Lotta Andersson and John Rennie got the idea to provide learning opportunities for students with a desire for knowledge. They are English coordinators (协调员) in the school. “We want to have a program to encourage students who really have the abilities and the interests to learn more and continue accepting challenges,” Andersson said during a recent interview. Students in the program, which was called Learning Challenges, met with the teachers about once a month. Andersson and Rennie would help us choose research topics. We then worked with the teachers to find books, interview subjects and Internet sources, While in Learning Challenges, I gave statements on European culture and the fashion industry. When asked what skills students had formed in the program, which ended in June 2020 because of the limits of a common disease. Andersson said, “They had learned to ask questions, be more open-minded and see things from different angles (角度). Also, they mastered the skills-reflecting more, acting actively, and learning not to put limits on themselves.” A student, Yihane Abed, carried out research on the sun, the moon, stars, planets, etc, while in Learning Challenges. “The skills I developed were teamwork and the ways to do research and give a good presentation,” she said. Andersson and Rennie continue to help students pursue their love of learning. “The program doesn’t exist formally, but as an important part of the culture at school, it is still needed,” Andersson said. “There is much more difference, not only for students who need extra help, but also for those who are higher achievers.” 28. What’s the purpose of creating Learning Challenges? A. To help some students learn more. B. To guide students to work out effectively. C. To improve students’ interest in visiting Europe. D. To encourage English students to help others. 29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about? A. Methods that students used in the program. B. Abilities that students got from the program. C. Difficulties that students met in the program. D. Topics that students selected from the program. 30. Which kind of research did Yihane Abed carry out? A. The universe. B. Teamwork C. The fashion industry. D. Travelling. 31. What does Andersson think of the program? A. Tough. B. Formal. C. Necessary. D. passive. D High school ended and all I remembered was feeling stuck. Most of my peers (同龄人) had picked out their majors and some even planned their careers. But I was still wondering about that. I’ve always enjoyed writing but didn’t know how to make a career out of it. After researching my options, such as journalism, I thought Professional Communications could improve my writing skills and lead me to a career in business. With that, I sent in my application, was accepted and started preparing for my first term of university. When course intentions rolled around, I began looking at the list of minors. Marketing caught my attention. It would complement (补充) my communications degree while providing me with the necessary business courses that were outside of the program. Without hesitation, I scheduled marketing into my studies, with the goal of using that newfound knowledge to accompany the technical skills that my major would provide me with. My school year began in a pretty typical way: the orientation week (迎新周), joining clubs and meeting new people. As time went on, I found myself enjoying the marketing courses more than the communications courses, and it was then that I first began to consider making a change. Finally, I spoke with a friend who had switched to a different major, and his words of encouragement were the final push I needed to go through with the decision. A few days later, I sent in my application, and soon I received my acceptance letter. I’ve now been gifted with a wonderful start to the year, and I couldn’t be happier about making the change. I feel less pressured to “find myself” and can put 110% effort into my studies. A note to high school students: University brings with it a load of new beginnings and self-reflection. It’s perfectly fine to come into university thinking you want one thing and finding out along the way that it might not be the right path for you. 32. Why was the author at a loss after high school? A. She suffered from a lack of confidence. B. She fell behind her peers in performance. C. She was afraid to choose a wrong university. D. She struggled to decide a future direction. 33. Which aspect of marketing attracted the author? A. Its business courses. B. Its exciting career opportunities. C. Its stress on technical skills. D. Its courses related to writing. 34. What led the author to think about changing her major? A. The active encouragement from a friend. B. Reduced interest in communications. C. The growing passion for marketing courses. D. Access to numerous new opportunities. 35. What does the author advise high school students to do? A. Think twice about major selection. B. Be open to changing academic paths. C. Concentrate all their efforts on study. D. Engage in self-reflection consistently. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Be a Successful High School Student Being a successful high school student requires both patience and motivation (动力). There are many distractions (使人分心的事) during teen years. To become a successful student, you have to say “no” to them. It may be hard, but hard work always pays off. 36 Remember that school is important. You need it to get into a good college and later get a good career that will support you for the rest of your life. Even if you decide not to go to college, school does help a lot socially. It’s important to have fun and have lots of activities, but school should always be your number one work. 37 Stay organized. Make sure you have everything you need. If your teacher likes to lecture, have a notebook for notes to help you remember. 38 They’ll be easier to find later. If your binder (活页夹) starts to get full, transfer old papers into another binder to keep at home. This way you won’t have to put them around, but they will be there when needed. Make friends. There’s too much going on to worry about: who’s friends with whom, who the popular people are. The best thing to do is to be friendly to and with everyone. Be confident and be yourself. 39 The more comfortable you become with people, the more people will like you. 40 It’s easy to forget to stay in shape when the work becomes more, so joining a team makes it less worry. If you’re going for all three seasons, that’s great, but make sure you’re being practical with your time. Try your hardest at both your sport and your schoolwork and you should be more than great. You’re healthy and on top of your schoolwork. A. Plan ahead. B. Take up a sport. C. Keep papers in order. D. Never take homework and tests lightly! E. Here are some practical tips you can try. F.
