Emma Lewis, a native of New Zealand, had little knowledge of rugby, which is regarded as the country’s national sport, during her childhood. What she could remember was merely seeing some neighbors playing the game on muddy fields. As she grew older, she gradually noticed a common phenomenon among local children: few of them had access to professional rugby training, and a majority of teenagers were addicted to electronic screens, occupying most of their after-school time.
In order to improve teenagers’ unhealthy lifestyle and popularize the national sport, Emma made up her mind to launch a children’s rugby program named Tiny Ferns, which is open to community children every autumn. As we all know, running a public sports project requires abundant funds to maintain sports fields and purchase professional equipment, while ordinary families are unable to cover the high training fees for their children.
It was Emma who took on the responsibility of sponsoring the entire program independently. She held the belief that outdoor sports could help children stay away from electronic devices and gain joy from group sports. With her continuous financial support, more than 80 kids living in the local community are able to participate in an eight-week professional rugby training course free of charge every autumn.
To ensure the long-term operation of the meaningful program, Emma came up with a creative way to raise funds. She wandered around her neighborhood to collect waste resources, including broken household appliances, abandoned metal supplies and outdated electronic products such as laptops and smartphones. After sorting out these recyclable materials behind her cafe, she would deliver them to a local recycling center for sale. It was this eco-friendly method that provided steady financial support for the children’s rugby project.
The efforts that Emma has devoted to the program have produced double benefits. For one thing, quantities of waste items that would otherwise be buried in landfills are recycled, greatly contributing to local environmental protection. For another, an increasing number of children have stepped out of their homes to join outdoor rugby activities, which means they spend far less time on digital devices and build closer relationships with their peers.
24. What do we know about Emma’s childhood experience?
A. She knew almost nothing about rugby.
B. She showed great passion for national sports.
C. She volunteered to coach kids in rugby games.
D. She often watched neighbors train for rugby matches.
25. What is the main intention of the Tiny Ferns program?
A. To upgrade local public sports facilities.
B. To enable local kids to experience rugby sports.
C. To promote her cafe’s business in the community.
D. To advocate environmental protection among teenagers.
26. How did Emma sustain the operation of her rugby program?
A. By profiting from selling sorted recyclable wastes.
B. By appealing to local families for public donations.
C. By selling self-owned sports equipment to residents.
D. By charging little fees for professional rugby training.
27. What positive effects does Emma’s program bring?
A. It boosts her cafe business and strengthens community bonds.
B. It cuts down children’s screen time and reduces landfill waste.
C. It makes rugby a mainstream sport and enriches kids’ spare time.
D. It completely solves local waste problems and improves kids’ health.
C
A recent study which was published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology conducted an in-depth exploration into the application of music in sports, particularly focusing on how auditory stimulation from music may influence individuals’ comprehensive athletic performance.
To obtain convincing data, researchers recruited 150 volunteers to complete a ball-throwing task that was specially designed for the experiment. In the initial stage of the research, all participants were required to throw balls into a basket from a fixed spot. During the experiment, they were divided into three groups, namely, listening to music of their own preference, enjoying no music at all, or being exposed to music selected by the research team. In the second stage where greater freedom was offered, participants were permitted to choose their own standing positions before throwing balls while repeating the same task under the above-mentioned three musical conditions.
The research ultimately revealed that music, regardless of whether it was chosen by the participants or assigned by researchers, exerted no obvious influence on the accuracy of ball-throwing. Surprisingly, what music successfully did was boost participants’ self-esteem and motivate them to take more risks during sports activities, among which males who enjoyed self-selected music showed the most significant changes.
These findings indicate that music can effectively lift people’s spirits. It enables athletes to engage in workout with greater enthusiasm and perseverance compared with those who exercise without musical accompaniment. Nevertheless, no matter what kind of music people listen to, it fails to improve people’s precise motor skills in goal-shooting tasks.
Another related study further investigated the potential connection between music tempo (节奏) and exercise efficiency. It was discovered that fast-tempo music could create an illusion of reduced exercise burden for exercisers, while bringing about greater physical benefits simultaneously (同步地).
When participants were exercising with high-tempo music playing in the background, their heart rates reached a relatively higher level than those exercising in silence. This phenomenon suggests that although exercisers felt less exhausted physically, their fitness training effects were greatly improved, which contributes to enhancing overall physical quality.
Researchers also pointed out that the positive effects of fast-tempo music varied from person to person and from sport to sport. Such beneficial effects were most prominent among those who took part in low-intensity exercises like walking and running, whereas people participating in high-intensity training such as weightlifting benefited the least from fast-tempo music.
28. What were volunteers allowed to do while shooting in the second stage test?
A. Shoot with fixed music. B. Shoot from a fixed point.
C. Choose position and music. D. Shoot with no music.
29. Which is more encouraging in throwing a ball test?
A. Music given by experts. B. Loud music.
C. Peaceful music. D. Music males chose.
30. Which sentence matches the results of high-pace music in this study?
A. It has no effect on sports.
B. It improves your athletic skills.
C. It helps easily achieve better workout.
D. High-pace music is beneficial for all forms of exercise.
D
There are multiple enjoyable genres for books and movies, including action and adventure. But we need to stop sleeping on sci-fi.
Talk of parallel universes, aliens and space exploration may seem fascinating, yet it’s unapproachable for some people. This surface-level perception prevents many from realizing that the genre extends beyond that, and it’s more relevant to our lives than one might expect.
Dissatisfaction with traditional structures is apparent among much of Gen Z. Serious concern surrounds the future of technology, the climate, sustainability, healthcare and a host of other social issues. Current issues and future implications involving pandemic and crises spur even more pessimism. With this disillusionment, we need to use our imagination to help foster the change we seek in the future. One subject which lends itself to the encouragement of that imagination is science fiction.
Edward Finn, founding director of the Center for Science and the Imagination, expressed the importance of imagination. “It is a capacity we can build as individuals and collectives, and it is the ignition system for a lot of things we care about: resilience, empathy, and innovation,” Finn said.
Finn also expressed why the genre’s ability to make people envision different realities is important for societal progress. “Science fiction plays a valuable role in helping us deal with the present because it pushes us to use our own imaginations,” Finn said. “Experiencing possible futures allows us to see beyond the present and think about the world we should be working towards and the people we want to become.”
It is unquestionable that technology is one of the most important aspects of our world and our daily lives. Home technologies and devices like smart phones are constantly evolving to new levels never previously imagined. This continuous improvement and innovation of these technologies parallels an evolving relationship and dependence on it. We need to question unintended consequences technology has in society and use this knowledge to navigate challenges and consider solutions to preventing potential issues in the future.
From political and social issues to technological issues and beyond, looking at them through the lens of sci-fi is important for evaluating our present and how we need to innovate and reshape society to progress. Science fiction’s ability to expand our imaginations provides tools to build a more ideal world than the one we currently live in.
31. What can we know from the first two paragraphs?
A. Science fiction describes our present living realities.
B. People are unable to understand the science fiction.
C. Science fiction is short of the enjoyable elements.
D. People lack a deep insight into science fiction.
32. What does the underlined word “disillusionment” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. discouragement. B. astonishment.
C. disagreement. D. argument.
33. According to the passage, which statement may the author agree?
A. Science fiction inspire us to develop technology.
B. Imagination contributes to turning future into reality.
C. The solutions to the current issues may be reflected in Sci-fi.
D. Technology can help prevent possible problems in the future.
34. The author writes this passage to __________.

Human activities have great effect on the environment. Everyone can make small life changes towards a low-carbon (低碳) life. Such changes can not only make a difference to the environment, but also have great health benefits for you.
●Burn less gas. Try walking or bicycling to work a few times a week and get a healthy exercise on the way. Encourage children to walk to school. Cutting down on driving and using your own two legs helps cut global warming pollution and deal with weight problems over time.
●Eat more thoughtfully. Eat less meat and more grains and vegetables, which helps reduce the need to change forests or grasslands to pastures (牧场). Replace one or more of your weekly meals with a meatless meal.
●Drink tap water rather than buy bottled water. Bottled water produces up to 1.5 million tons of plastic waste per year. Bottled water is not necessarily cleaner than tap water, and tap water is cheaper.
●Reduce the use of paper. Think twice before you print. If you must print, try printing on both sides.
●Reduce the amount of water you use in your home. Turn off the water while brushing your teeth and turn off the shower after soaping up. Wash your fruit and vegetables in a basin of water instead of running water from the tap.
●Use energy-saving lamps to save money, use less energy and create less pollution. These lamps are easily available and have various styles and brands.

【答案】28. A 29. D 30. C

【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Surprisingly, what music successfully did was boost participants’ self-esteem and motivate them to take more risks during sports activities, among which males who enjoyed self-selected music showed the most significant changes.(令人意外的是音乐能提升自尊、鼓励冒险,其中自选音乐的男性变化最显著。)”可知,男性自己挑选的音乐激励效果最强。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段中“When participants were exercising with high-tempo music playing in the background, their heart rates reached a relatively higher level than those exercising in silence. This phenomenon suggests that although exercisers felt less exhausted physically, their fitness training effects were greatly improved, which contributes to enhancing overall physical quality.(当背景播放快节奏音乐时,锻炼者的心率比在安静环境中运动时达到更高水平。这意味着锻炼者身体感知到的疲惫感更低,训练效果却大幅提升,有助于全面增强身体素质。)”可知,快节奏音乐能让人轻松获得更好锻炼效果。

A. reveal a consequence B. suggest a pathway
C. introduce a genre D. present a perspective
【答案】31. D 32. A 33. C 34. D
