An Outdoor Adventure
Last summer, my friends and I had an outdoor adventure in a forest near our city.
We got lost in the dense woods as we were too focused on the scenery. At first, we felt panicked, but then we used the compass to find the right path. This adventure was unforgettable. It helped us get close to nature and taught us to stay calm when facing difficulties.
Such experiences make us braver and more independent.

根据下文“I will take care of Lisa now”可知,妈妈让作者去照看妹妹。 look up“查阅”;look for“寻找”;look at“看着”,均不符合“照看小孩”的语意。
根据“because I wanted to read my new storybook”可知,作者想读书却被打断去照看妹妹,因此感到不开心。
根据上文“Please play with Lisa”及Hop回答“OK! No problem!”
以及“It tried to jump away”可知,Lisa把兔子当马骑,Hop说自己是兔子不是马。 a bee“蜜蜂”;an ant“蚂蚁”;a rabbit“兔子”,均不符合“被当马骑”的语境。
I am not...” you“你”;him“他”;her“她”,均不符合Hop自我求救的语境。
根据下文“She put a small hat on Hop’s head”可知,Lisa继续玩Hop,没有停止。
根据开头“Mum and Dad were busy working in the study”可知,他们在书房工作,听到声音后从书房出来。
根据上文“My face was as red as a tomato”可知,作者因为让玩具兔子照看妹妹而不好意思,此处表达歉意。

Outdoor hiking is a great way to exercise and get close to nature. But we need to learn basic hiking skills to keep safe. Here are some easy and useful rules for hiking.
1. Pre-Hiking Preparation
Before you go hiking, check the weather, the road situation and your own health. It is important to get well prepared. First, prepare walking sticks to protect your knees and walk safely. Besides, take a light comfortable bag for your things and wear soft safe sports shoes. Also, do not wear cotton clothes. They hold water and make you cold easily. Choose dry, warm and wind-proof (防风) ones. What’s more, bring basic food and enough water. Also, take small things such as medicine, a hat, sunglasses and extra socks. Remember to do some warm-up exercises before hiking to relax your body.
2. Rules for Hiking on the Way
First, hike with friends and walk slowly. Second, stand to rest when tired. Don’t sit or take off your bag. Rest with your group. Besides, drink small amounts of water often and never drink too much at a time. When going up hills, lean your body forward, take short steps and use walking sticks to save energy. When going down hills, bend your knees, walk slowly and never jump. Last but not least, keep to the main road and never walk alone in new places.
3. Easy Ways to Find Directions
First, you can use the sun: it rises in the east and sets in the west. Put a stick into the ground and mark its shadow (标记阴影) twice, then the middle of the two marks points north. Next, check plants: tree rings (年轮) are wider and hill plants grow better on the south, while bamboo looks greener and thicker on the south. What’s more, look for the North Star at night; find the Big Dipper first, and the bright star always shows north.
In short, hiking is a wonderful outdoor activity. With good preparation and safe habits, we can enjoy the beauty of nature and protect ourselves well during every hiking trip.
11.Which group of things do we need to prepare before hiking?
A.②③⑤⑥⑦ B.①②③④⑥ C.②③④⑤⑦ D.①③④⑥⑧
12.Which picture shows the right way of finding directions?

Staying with the dogs helped Jack a lot. Then the boy became better and left the hospital with a new feeling of hope.
Not all the dogs can help with depressed people. The dogs are carefully picked from family pets. Then, the dogs have to take part in tests. After passing the test, the dogs will get working certificates (就业证明) and then they can work to help people in need.
Doctors believe that with the help of dogs, we may find new ways to help with depression problems.

C
Could it be possible to spend your nights sleeping thousands of times, each time for only four seconds? Does it sound like a terrible dream?
Well, that’s how chinstrap penguin (帽带企鹅) parents sleep.
Like other penguins, chinstrap penguins spend much of their time in the water, catching fish to eat. But when they raise their young penguins, they return to land. They lay eggs in nests made of small rocks. One parent keeps the nest safe, while the other hunts for food. For one thing, brown skuas (贼鸥) like to attack (攻击) the eggs and young penguins. Besides, other penguins nearby may take rocks from the nest, putting the young in danger. It can be dangerous for the young if their parents get a good night’s sleep. However, staying awake for 24 hours a day is hard for penguin parents.
Faced with these problems, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to solve the problem. When scientists first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking (眨眼) their eyes, they wondered if more was happening than just blinking. So they studied the brain activity of the penguins and recorded the birds on video. The study showed that in fact the tired parents were sleeping very often and for a very short time. Each sleep lasts only about four seconds. By taking over 10,000 short sleeps a day, the penguins get a total of about 11 hours of sleep a day. How surprising!
It’s not certain if the short sleeps help the penguins feel truly rested, or if they’re just enough to keep them going. The scientists don’t know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they’re raising their young. They also don’t know if other kinds of penguins have similar sleeping habits. Further study is needed to learn more about them.
18.What problems do the chinstrap penguin parents face when raising their young?
①It is hard for them to stay awake all day long.
②They may meet danger when hunting for food.
③Other penguins might take rocks from the nest.
④Skuas may attack the eggs and young penguins.
A.①③④ B.①②④ C.①②③ D.②③④
19.How did the scientists find out the short sleeps of chinstrap penguins?
A.By taking photos of their babies. B.By following them to find food.
C.By watching their eyes carefully. D.By studying their brain activities.
20.What may scientists study further about chinstrap penguins?
A.If they sleep in such a way all year round.
B.The living places where they choose to stay.
C.Different kinds of food they like to hunt for.
D.Ways to stop enemies from hurting their eggs.
21.The passage is most probably from ________.
A.an animal care guide B.a penguin keeper’s diary
C.a classic animal novel D.an animal science magazine
【答案】18.A 19.D 20.A 21.D
原文第三段中“For one thing, brown skuas like to attack the eggs and young penguins. Besides, other penguins nearby may take rocks from the nest,… a day is hard for penguin parents.”
19.根据原文第四段中“When scientists first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking their eyes,…The study showed that in fact the tired parents were sleeping very often and for a very short time Each sleep lasts only about four seconds.”
20.根据原文最后一段中“The scientists don’t know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year, or only when they’re raising…Further study is needed to learn more about them.”
D
After breakfast the girls gave their mother Christmas presents. They told the reason for each one and there was a lot of laughing and kissing. Mrs March put some perfume (香水) on one of the handkerchiefs at once and put it into her pocket. Then she put on the slippers and the gloves.
“Perfect!” she said.
The girls spent the rest of the day preparing a play. The sisters often performed (表演) plays for their friends and they were very good at making costumes (戏服) and props.
Twelve girls arrived about six o’ clock and took their places on the bed in the big bedroom. The play was a great success (成功). Everybody enjoyed it very much. The girls were still laughing and clapping when Hannah came in and said,“Supper is ready.”
A surprise was waiting for them on the dining room table—dishes of ice cream, pink and white, fresh fruit, cakes and real French chocolates. And in the middle of all this delicious food there were four vases of beautiful flowers. The girls couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Did the fairies bring the supper?” asked Amy.
“No! Santa Claus brought it,” said Beth.
“Mother did it,” Meg said.
“No! Aunt March sent it!” cried Jo.
“You are all wrong,” said Mrs March.“Old Mr Laurence sent it.”
“The Laurence boy’s grandfather!” Meg spoke in a low voice.“Why did he do that? We don’t know him!”
“Hannah told one of his servants (仆人) the story of the Hummels. Mr Laurence was sorry to hear about your poor Christmas breakfast so he decided to give you a surprise.”
“My mother says he’s very proud,” said one of the girls at the table. “She says that he doesn’t like mixing with his neighbors. His grandson has to stay in the house and study all day. We invited him to a party once, but he didn’t come. He’s very shy.”
“I’m going to talk to him one day,” said Jo. “He needs to have some fun. I’m going to invite him to our next play!”
22.What could Mrs March’s daughters do well in?
A.Making delicious food. B.Telling interesting stories.

b. The girls spent the rest of the day preparing a play.
c. The girls found a big supper on the dining room table.
d. The girls invited Laurence to a party, but he didn’t come.
e. Hannah came into the room and asked girls to have supper.
A.a-e-c-b-d B.e-d-a-b-c C.d-a-b-e-c D.b-a-d-c-e
24.What can you infer (推测) from this passage?
A.The girls knew who sent the supper at first.
B.Hannah told his servant the story of the Hummels.

25.What may the story talk about next?
A.How Mrs March thanked Mr Laurence for his supper.
B.How Jo invited Mr Laurence’s grandson to their next play.
C.How Old Mr Laurence tried to make friends with his neighbours.
D.How the girls prepared their next play and presents for their mum.
根据原文第三段“The sisters often performed plays for their friends and they were very good at making costumes and props.”
25.根据文章结尾“‘I’m going to talk to him one day,’ said Jo.‘He needs to have some fun. I’m going to invite him to our next play!’”,乔明确表示要邀请劳伦斯先生的孙子观看下一场戏剧,可推断下文会讲述乔如何发出邀请。

energy, different from, help, as long as, study
You can tell the West African lungfish is special just from its name. With its lungs (肺), it can live without water for a long time!
Their lungs help them take in air. This is very 39 when there’s not enough oxygen (氧气) in the water. This makes them 40 other fish.
When the dry season comes and water levels (水位) become low, these lungfish do something called aestivation (夏眠). They stay in the mud and sleep for a long time—maybe even 41 one year! During this time, their body slows down a lot to save 42 . When the rain returns and brings back the water, they wake up and go back to their “fishy” activities.
Scientists love 43 these special fish because they teach us a lot about how animals can survive in difficult environments.
39.helpful 40.different from 41.as long as 42.energy 43.studying
根据“Their lungs help them take in air.”
根据“This makes them…other fish.” 故填different from。
根据“They stay in the mud and sleep for a long time…”可知,此处表达 “长达……”,as long as用在数字one year前面表示 “长达”。故填as long as。
根据“During this time, their body slows down a lot to save…”以及“They stay in the mud and sleep for a long time”可知,这种鱼在泥土里休眠很长时间来保存能量,用不可数名词energy表示“能量”。故填energy。
How do you like to keep in touch with your friends? Do you send a text message (短信) or make 44 phone call? A study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology advises that you should call instead of (而不是) sending a text. Because calling 45 (make) you feel closer to your friends.
Scientists asked two 46 (hundred) people a question: “Would you get in touch again with a long lost friend 47 phone?” Many people thought that a phone call would be awkward (尴尬的). But in fact, hearing 48 (someone) voice made the experience better.
According to the study, people like to text (写短信) because they can have more time to think. They can think about their words 49 they send a message. Also, they won’t be cut off or interrupted (打扰) while messaging.
But on the other hand, texting can make it hard to understand the true 50 (mean) of a conversation. Making a phone call is 51 (real) natural. You 52 (not need) to overthink the possible meanings behind the words and punctuation (标点符号) in a text. So, why not tell 53 (you) to make a phone call when you need to say something to your friend? They will be pleased to answer the phone!
44.a 45.makes 46.hundred 47.by 48.someone’s 49.before 50.meaning 51.really 52.don’t need 53.yourself

We got lost in the dense woods as we were too focused on the scenery. At first, we felt panicked, but then we used the compass to find the right path. This adventure was unforgettable. It helped us get close to nature and taught us to stay calm when facing difficulties.

Faced with these problems, chinstrap penguins have found an unusual way to solve the problem. When
scientists first noticed chinstrap penguins kept blinking()their eyes, they wondered if more was happening than
just blinking. So they studied the brain activity of the penguins and recorded the birds on video. The study showed
0
that in fact the tired parents were sleeping very often and for a very short time. Each sleep lasts only about four
seconds.By taking over 10,000 short sleeps a day,the penguins get a total of about 11 hours of sleep a day.How
surprising!
It's not certain if the short sleeps help the penguins feel truly rested,or if they're just enough to keep them
going. The scientists don't know if the penguins sleep this way at other times of the year,or only when they're

A mental health hospital in Chengdu welcomes two dogs to work with psychological assistance therapy
The dogs are part of the animals-assisted therapy (AAT) in the treatment project for depressed (抑郁的) people. According to Chen Jiajia, who works with the hospital, “AAT is a useful method for treating depression, and it helps a lot in treatment projects”. The two dogs, “Lidabao” and “Xuegao”, once worked in hospitals for children.
Chen said that earlier in January, a depressed boy called Jack, who didn’t talk to anyone and even tried to kill himself, took part in the project.
