Harvey Sutton spent nearly seven months hiking with his parents, walking the thousands of kilometers that make up the complete Appalachian Trail. Harvey, or “little man”, was just 4 years old when he started, and celebrated his 5th birthday on the trail.
The Appalachian Trail, which many people call simply the “AT”, is a 3,530-kilometer hiking trail that runs through the forests of the Appalachian Mountains and passes through 14 states in all. Hiking the Appalachian Trail is tough, and only one out of every four hikers completes all the sections of the trail. The people who hike it must carry everything they need with them, including tents, sleeping bags and other supplies, along with food and water.
Harvey’s parents, Josh and Cassie Sutton, have been hiking with Harvey since he was two years old. They made reasonable arrangements, and especially prepared him for hiking the AT by starting out with lots of shorter walks and hikes. It took Harvey and his family 209 days to complete the entire AT. Every day the family would wake up around 5:30 in the morning. They would have breakfast and pack up their tents and sleeping bags before setting off through the woods. In general, the family hiked about 16 kilometers a day before stopping to set up camp again.
During his days on the AT, Harvey liked to use his imagination. This helped him walk more quickly and have fun while he hiked. He played games with his mom and dad and other hikers, Kart Sakas hiked with the Suttons through seven states. Mr. Sakas said Harvey didn’t seem to get tired. When other hikers were worn out at the end of the day, Harvey was still eager for a game.
Completing the AT taught Harvey and his parents how to work as a team and how to take on challenges together. Harvey has now turned 5 and has started kindergarten. But at some point in the future, he says, “I want to hike the AT again!”
4. What can we learn about hiking on the AT?
A. It takes every hiker 7 months to finish it. B. Hikers like to celebrate their birthdays on it.
C. Only a quarter of hikers finish the whole trail. D. Hikers spend lots of money hiking on it.
5. What made the Suttons’ hiking successful?
A. Using their imagination. B. Being full of energy.
C. Managing time well. D. Having good preparation.
6. What kind of person is Harvey Sutton?
A. Energetic and team-spirited. B. Imaginative and funny.
C. Naughty and tough. D. Considerate and brave.
7. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A. The AT—A Challenging Trail B. Why Do People Like Hiking?
C. Hiking—Suttons’ Hobby D. The Little Man’s 209 Hiking Days

The country’s increasing adoption of smart technologies in food production was recently showcased at an annual fair in Yangling, Shaanxi province, which featured a range of agricultural innovations focused on improving productivity.
Among those displayed at the 31st China Yangling Agricultural High-tech Fair included a digital irrigation (灌溉) system designed to improve water efficiency. The system has helped Shaanxi province, a major wheat production area, curb agricultural water usage by about 18 million cubic meters each year and cut electricity consumption by 20 million kilowatt-hours.
Drones designed for monitoring orchards situated in mountainous regions, along with tablets that allow for remote control of fertilization (施肥) during crop watering, are also attracting significant attention from fair visitors.
At the booth of Raintech, an agricultural startup in Beijing, a range of instruments were on display, including a mini-meteorological station capable of monitoring (监控) greenhouse environment and sending real-time data, such as temperature, to a smartphone app.
“The sensors integrated into the device can also monitor humidity, light intensity, atmospheric pressure and carbon dioxide levels,” said Liu Hongtao, manager of the company.
By analyzing this data using AI-driven algorithms, the system can predict nighttime temperatures and alert growers to potential frost damage.
This innovation — coupled with other devices aimed at automating greenhouse environmental control, such as a supplementary lighting system —— significantly benefits the advancement of facility agriculture.
This sector has strict light and temperature requirements during both day and night, making environmental control technologies essential for optimum production.
Data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs showed that, currently, 2.67 million hectares of crops are grown in greenhouses in China.
Greenhouse farming also plays an important role in the production of animal protein, with70 percent of the country’s meat, eggs and milk and 52 percent of aquatic products relying on this method of cultivation.
8. What does the underlined word “curb” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Reduce. B. Adjust. C. Cover. D. Record.
9. Which of the following is a function of the products of Raintech?
A. Watering crops. B. Controlling fertilization.
C. Monitoring temperature. D. Reducing carbon emission.
10. Why does the writer use the data in the last two paragraphs?
A. To explain the working principles of the devices.
B. To introduce the productivity of China’s agriculture.
C. To show the importance of greenhouse farming in China.
D. To describe the rapid development of Chinese agriculture.
11. What is the writing purpose of this passage?
A. To report a news event. B. To advertise a new product.
C. To share opinions on innovation. D. To draw attention to agriculture.
D
Solar cells play an important role in the shift towards a greener future, with an increasing number of buildings and rooftops worldwide being fitted with solar panels. However, their large size can be a limitation. A team of researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has developed a technique to produce incredibly lightweight solar cells that can be placed on a variety of surfaces.
These solar cells are made from nanomaterials using a kind of electronic ink. Their thinness allows them to be applied to many different surfaces, such as being placed on the wings of drones (无人机) to prolong their battery life. These cells are thinner than human hair, yet they are capable of producing approximately 18 times more power per kilogram compared to traditional solar panels.
A problem that researchers are addressing before these solar cells can be mass-produced is how to protect the solar cells from oxygen and moisture (湿气). While traditional solar cells are protected by glass, adding such a layer would remove the major advantage of the new ultra-thin solar cells. Scientists are currently exploring alternative protective measures.
Australia is also witnessing notable progress in this field. During the “Charge Around Australia” project, scientists drove around the country in a Tesla that was powered only by solar panels on a three-month journey. These solar panels were stored in the vehicle’s trunk and provided power if necessary.
12. What is the main advantage of the new solar cells developed by MIT scientists?
A. They are diverse in form. B. They are more affordable to produce.
C. They are protected by a layer of glass. D. They are flexible and generate more power.
13. What challenge do scientists face before these solar cells can be mass-produced?
A. To extend the battery life. B. To make them absorb more energy.
C. To guard them against oxygen and moisture. D. To get rid of size and geographical limitation.
14. What most probably makes glass improper as a protective layer?
A. Its cost. B. Its weight. C. Its structure. D. Its breakability.
15. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Solar panels have been widely used in vehicles around the world.
B. Australia relied on a network of charging stations in the project.
C. Significant innovation was made in solar technology in Australia.
D. The Tesla was charged using traditional power outlets in the project.

Elderly Mr. Henderson, the “Grumpy Anchor” of the street, was known for his bad temper in the neighbourhood. He lived alone in a weathered house with a small area and a fence that seemed to whisper “Keep Out.” Seventeen-year-old Mia, who lived next door, only ever saw him when he was looking angrily at the neighborhood kids for playing too close to his prized rosebushes. Her mother, a woman of great patience, always said, “Everyone has a story, Mia. Sometimes people just forget how to say it because they’ve been alone for too long.” Mia would nod, though it was hard to imagine a heart of gold behind that cold look.
One Saturday, a heavy snowstorm blanketed the town, transforming the familiar neighborhood into a quiet, white world. By the time the wind died down, the world was buried under a thick layer of snow. Mia noticed that while every other driveway was being cleared, Mr. Henderson’s remained untouched — a smooth, large sheet of snow blocking his garage. Usually, the old man was the first one out to clear it. Strangely, by Sunday afternoon, the chimney smoke was thin, and there was still no sign of movement. A current of worry settled in Mia’s chest.
Mia decided to help clean his driveway while keeping an eye on the old man, putting aside her fear of offending him. For two hard hours, she worked on the snow. The biting wind stung her cheeks, and her muscles ached with every heavy pile of snow removed, but she didn’t stop until a clear path stretched from his front door to the sidewalk. Before going back to her own warm house, Mia remembered the two pieces of fresh bread her mother had just made. She put them into a paper bag, wrote a simple note — “Hope you’re staying warm. — Mia next door” — and hung it on his door.
The evening came but nothing happened. Mia couldn’t wait to figure out what had happened on earth.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;

D 13. C 14. B 15. C

Conflict is surely a common problem in life and friendships.___16___ That's because there isn't enough depth to guarantee all the trouble it takes to smooth over the disagreement. Unfortunately, even when the friendship reaches a deeper level, conflict continues to happen and can break apart a relationship. Here are some resolutions.
Resolve it the day it happens. One rule my parents follow in their marriage is that they don't go to bed angry with each other. They always attempt to resolve things the day it happens so that in the morning, it's a fresh start with no past grudge (怨恨). 故填made。
故填a。
故填to engage。
故填was supported。
故填which。

Then came a gentle knock on Mia’s front door. Confused at the unexpected sound on such a cold night, she hurried to open the door. To her surprise, Mr. Henderson stood there , tightly holding the bread bag she’d left. His usual cold frown was gone, replaced by gentle tiredness. “Thank you, Mia,” he said softly. “I have been feeling unwell all day and you really help me out.” Learning about his situation, Mia stepped aside quickly, gesturing for him to come in. Over steaming cups of hot tea, he shared how lonely he’d been since his wife passed away. During their warm talk, a long-lost smile finally appeared on his face.
From that day on, the whole neighborhood saw a new “Him.” Astonished were the neighbors to witness Mr. Henderson clearing not only his driveway but also the bus stop path. The “Keep Out” fence gradually transformed into a low gate adorned with rose cuttings, which were tagged “Free to good homes.” Children, who once fled his glare, now gathered eagerly as he taught them cutting off the branches, his rough hands surprisingly gentle. Gradually, the “Grumpy Anchor” had become the neighborhood’s unofficial grandfather. And Mia became a regular in his house, whose small act of kindness didn’t just clear a path in the snow but also melted the ice around a lonely old man’s heart.
