David Hockney’s work has shaped modern understanding of perception, attention, and ways of seeing for more than six decades, insisting on these as active forms of intelligence. The Cambridge Lectures on Art & Intelligence take place alongside the continued public presence of his work, including major exhibitions at institutions such as the Serpentine Galleries. David Hockney’s practice has long emphasized the active role of the viewers, the experience of time, and the intelligence of looking. These questions remain central as technologies increasingly influence how the world is seen and understood. The lecture series extends this inquiry into a wider conversation about human judgement, interpretation, confidence and inventive thinking in contemporary culture. At a moment when AI is transforming how images, information, and decisions are produced, the series asks what forms of human insight, judgement, and interpretive agency remain essential, and how they are developed, recognized, and sustained within education, culture, and industry. Attention Lecture dates run from 8th February 2026 to 18th February 2026 (in support of Cambridge Arts Festival 2026). What will happen when a boy who loves basketball realizes he may not be tall enough to make it on the court? For Amar Shah, that realization did not end his dream — it helped him find a new one. Shah, a journalist and author of the graphic novel Wish I Was a Baller, turned his love for a famous basketball team into a writing career that began in eighth grade. “I knew I couldn’t make it as a basketball player, because I didn’t have that needed height,” Shah shared with a laugh. “So, I found my closest way to the court — through journalism.” That choice led to some incredible opportunities. While still in high school, Shah earned press permission and began interviewing basketball legends. Thinking back on his first interview with a famous basketball player, Shah said, “Here I am, not even five feet tall, and he’s seven feet. He talked to me for 30 minutes, like we were friends.” Kids can use reading and writing to stay close to the sport they love. There are numerous ways to work in sports without competing. In Wish I Was a Baller, Shah shared his professional journey, and he hoped that it would encourage young people to keep going. “Whatever your dreams are, continue striving for them, because you never know where they’ll take you,” he said. Many sports fans enjoy reading books about the game they love. From player autobiographies to fictional tournaments, there is something for everyone. Teenage Scholastic Kid Reporter Asher Freije is an athlete and sports fan who enjoys reading. He shared his advice for athletes who want to read more. “Find books on the sport you love. If you love that sport, then you most likely will love that book, because it’s something you already enjoy,” he said. He also explained how reading could inspire new interests, sharing that a book about wrestling once inspired his interest in that sport. 4. What was Shah’s original dream? A. To become a sports journalist. B. To write stories about basketball. C. To join a famous journalism team. D. To be a professional basketball player. 5. What is the tone of Wish I Was a Baller? A. Romantic. B. Inspirational. C. Ironic. D. Pessimistic. 6. What message did Asher Freije convey in the last paragraph? A. Wrestling is a popular teenage sport. B. Reading sports books benefits players. C. Athletes should read only sports books. D. Being good at a sport can win more fans. 7. What can be concluded from the text? A. Practice makes perfect. B. Many hands make light work. C. All roads lead to Rome. D. Actions speak louder than words. 4. D 5. B 6. B 7. There are numerous ways to work in sports without competing. C Search online and you will find countless DIYbio trends that promise healthier aging, from using hyperbaric oxygen therapy to sleeping under red lights. But research from Tufts University points to a much simpler lifestyle change that appears to work: eating slightly fewer calories. The findings come from CALERIE, short for Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy. In the study, 143 participants tried to reduce their calorie intake by 25% for two years, while 75 others continued eating normally as the control group. Researchers found notable improvements among the participants who reduced calories. Many shifted their diets away from fats and toward more protein and carbohydrates. Although the group achieved only about a 12% calorie reduction instead of the targeted 25%, they still experienced significant declines in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and insulin levels compared with the control group. A paper released earlier this year found that lowering calorie intake did not reduce the overall nutritional quality of participants’ diets. “The most exciting part is that we saw these benefits with only a moderate level of restriction that’s feasible for most people. It doesn’t have to take extreme measures. For some people, just skipping a large daily sugary coffee drink can do the trick,” says Sai Krupa Das, one of the researchers. Researchers are still unable to understand exactly why calorie restriction boosts health. One theory is that eating less helps the body generate energy more efficiently while producing fewer reactive oxygen species, unstable molecules (分子) that can damage cells and contribute to diseases ranging from cancer to Parkinson’s disease. One test confirmed that the participants in the calorie restriction group had lower levels of these molecules than the control group. The CALERIE project is still ongoing. Researchers still do not know whether calorie restriction works best as a permanent lifestyle or as a shorter-term intervention. “I think the follow-up was necessary given such promising results in the primary study, and it is crucial to see how things play out over time,” Das says. 8. What is the effective way to slow aging according to the research from Tufts University? A. Receiving oxygen treatment. B. Using red lights while sleeping. C. Trying various DIYbio methods. D. Cutting down food calories a little. 9. What do we know about the calorie-cutting participants? A. They took in much less protein. B. They quitted before the deadline. C. Their health indicators turned better generally. D. Their diets were richer than the control group’s. 10. What does the underlined word “feasible” in paragraph 4 mean? A. Strange. B. Practical. C. Suspicious. D. Predictable. 11. Why do researchers carry out further research? A. To explore long-term effects of calorie restriction. B. To figure out new approaches to restricting calories. C. To explain why calorie restriction improves health. D. To detect how reactive oxygen species harm health. D 9. C 10. B 11. 根据第一段中“But research from Tufts University points to a much simpler lifestyle change that appears to work: eating slightly fewer calories. 根据第三段中“Although the group achieved only about a 12% calorie reduction instead of the targeted 25%, they still experienced significant declines in blood pressure, LDL cholesterol, and insulin levels compared with the control group. 根据画线词的下文“It doesn’t have to take extreme measures. For some people, just skipping a large daily sugary coffee drink can do the trick 根据最后一段中“Researchers still do not know whether calorie restriction works best as a permanent lifestyle or as a shorter-term intervention. “I think the follow-up was necessary given such promising results in the primary study, and it is crucial to see how things play out over time,” Das says. D To the untrained eye, there is very little difference between the three known versions of the artwork The Lute Player. Almost identical in composition, the paintings all portray a young subject, in white clothes and with an instrument in hand, turning slightly away from the viewer. Each appears to carry Italian painter Caravaggio’s distinctive mastery of light and shadow. To art historians, however, there has long been broad agreement: The versions held by Russia’s Hermitage Museum and France’s Wildenstein Collection were created by Caravaggio, while the one at Britain’s Badminton House is merely a copy. A Swiss tech company begged to differ, and it claimed there was an almost 86% chance that Badminton House’s version is authentic. The company’s AI model, which was trained to recognize markers of Caravaggio’s style, including shapes, color palettes and compositional structures, also declared (though with less statistical certainty) that Wildenstein’s version was likely a copy. Its analysis found “a significant difference” between the latter painting’s “visual characteristics” and those of Caravaggio’s other works. The company’s declarations have not always contradicted the established scholarship. It claimed that a long-debated painting of Vincent van Gogh at the National Museum in Oslo had a 97% chance of being genuine. The Vincent van Gogh authorship was later matched by more conventional research, including technical analyses and studies of the artist’s letters. The company’s authentication approach combines machine learning, deep neural networks and computer vision algorithms (算法). To date, the company has produced models for over 200 artists. In each, the AI is trained on two photographic datasets: a “positive” one, containing images of recognized paintings by the artist mentioned, and a “negative” one comprising similar but inauthentic works. The company emphasized that having a “high degree of similarity” between the two datasets to learn the difference is crucial. “I have reservations about it. Authentication is rarely just about surface style,” said art historian Sharon Hecker. “You have to know about the workshop, practices, materials, the condition of the work, the restoration history, and how a particular artist’s work evolved over time.” 12. What do we know about the three versions of The Lute Player? A. They are recognized as Caravaggio’s artworks. B. They are refused by famous European museums. C. They look almost the same to non-professionals. D. They differ greatly in composition and light use. 13. Why is the Vincent van Gogh’s painting mentioned in paragraph 4? A. To prove AI research has its reliability. B. To show the limits of traditional art study. C. To compare different creating styles of art. D. To stress the difficulty in painting creation. 14. What is Sharon Hecker’s attitude to the AI authentication method? A. Supportive. B. Curious. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful. 15. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Conflicts of Caravaggio’s Artworks B. AI Joins in the Artwork Identification C. AI represents Traditional Art Appreciation D. Approaches to Preserving Old Masterpieces 【答案】12. C 13. A 14. D 15. 根据第一段中“To the untrained eye, there is very little difference between the three known versions of the artwork The Lute Player.(在外行看来,《弹鲁特琴者》这幅作品的三个已知版本几乎没有什么区别。)” 根据第四段中“The company’s declarations have not always contradicted the established scholarship. It claimed that a long-debated painting of Vincent van Gogh at the National Museum in Oslo had a 97% chance of being genuine. The Vincent van Gogh authorship was later matched by more conventional research, including technical analyses and studies of the artist’s letters.(这家公司的声明并非总是和公认的学术观点相悖,它声称奥斯陆国家博物馆中那幅长期存疑的梵高画作有97%的概率是真迹,这一梵高作品归属结论之后也得到了包含技术分析、艺术家书信研究在内的传统研究的佐证。)” 根据最后一段中““I have reservations about it. Authentication is rarely just about surface style,” said art historian Sharon Hecker.(艺术史学家莎伦·赫克表示:“我对此持保留态度,艺术品鉴定从来都不只是关乎表面风格。”)” “AI Joins in the Artwork Identification(‌AI参与艺术品鉴定)”符合题意。 Normally, inflammation (炎症) is beneficial because it is caused by the immune system to help your body fight off illness-causing bacteria and repair injured tissue.____16____If it doesn’t, it becomes chronic (慢性的), low-grade inflammation, which is invisible but can have harmful effects. Luckily, we can take steps to reduce chronic inflammation by adjusting our lifestyle. ____17____For many years, scientific research has shown that consuming lots of anti-inflammatory (抗炎的) foods — such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts — can help reduce inflammation, In addition, the benefits of consuming anti-inflammatory spices like turmeric and ginger are highly praised. The same is true for reducing alcohol intake. Ease your stress. Psychological stress is now recognized as a major cause of inflammation. It activates the body’s fight-or-flight response, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals.____18____Leisure activities such as meditating or doing yoga can help. To gain the anti-inflammatory effects, engage in these practices regularly rather than waiting for the stress to pile up. Prioritize shut-eye. Insufficient, inconsistent or poor quality sleep is associated with higher inflammatory markers in the body. Our immune system is regulated in part by the body’s internal clock — when your sleep schedule is irregular, your body’s clocks might stop keeping the same time.____19____To avoid this, keep your bedtime and wake times consistent. Set limits on social media. Social media use steals time you might otherwise spend doing anti-inflammatory activities like exercising, sleeping and spending time in person with friends. The solution is to set boundaries on your use. Notice whether you feel in control when using social media.____20____ A. Build strong social connections. B. Make your efforts in the kitchen. C. Then inflammation is one of the prices you pay D. These substances can be cut down by relaxation. E. If you feel bad afterwards, ask yourself if you can stop. F. When the battle is over, inflammation is supposed to cease. G. Social connections really change how sensitive the brain is to stress. F 17. B 18. D 19. C 20. 【16题详解】 上文“Normally, inflammation (炎症) is beneficial because it is caused by the immune system to help your body fight off illness-causing bacteria and repair injured tissue. 空后“If it doesn’t, it becomes chronic (慢性的), low-grade inflammation, which is invisible but can have harmful effects. F“When the battle is over, inflammation is supposed to cease. 【17题详解】 下文“For many years, scientific research has shown that consuming lots of anti-inflammatory foods — such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and nuts — can help reduce inflammation. B“Make your efforts in the kitchen. 【18题详解】 上文“Psychological stress is now recognized as a major cause of inflammation. It activates the body’s fight-or-flight response, leading to the release of pro-inflammatory chemicals. 空后“Leisure activities such as meditating or doing yoga can help. D“These substances can be cut down by relaxation. Insufficient, inconsistent or poor quality sleep is associated with higher inflammatory markers in the body. Our immune system is regulated in part by the body’s internal clock — when your sleep schedule is irregular, your body’s clocks might stop keeping the same time. 空后“To avoid this, keep your bedtime and wake times consistent. C“Then inflammation is one of the prices you pay. 【20题详解】 上文“Set limits on social media. Social media use steals time you might otherwise spend doing anti-inflammatory activities like exercising, sleeping and spending time in person with friends. The solution is to set boundaries on your use. Notice whether you feel in control when using social media. E“If you feel bad afterwards, ask yourself if you can stop. The checkout I headed for had one old man in line. His parents worked hard to make ends meet, but they always made sure Luke felt loved and secure. After graduating from high school, Luke moved to a big city to pursue his college degree in social work. During his studies, he often volunteered at local shelters and community centers. There, he met many children sleeping on the floor or on old, worn-out couches. Those children looked tired and unhappy, and their lack of proper sleeping arrangements broke Luke’s heart. He knew he had to do something to change this situation. Inspired by what he witnessed during his volunteer work, Luke decided to establish an organization called Sleep in Fantastic Peace (SFP). His motivation was simple yet powerful: to ensure that every child in need could have a comfortable bed to sleep in. The purpose of the organization was to build and deliver beds to children across the United States who didn’t have one of their own. Initially, Luke built beds himself with his family. The effort grew rapidly as local communities joined, driven by Luke’s passion. Over the years, SFP grew steadily. They built and delivered thousands of beds to children in different states. But Luke always dreamed of doing something even bigger, something that could make a huge impact in a short period. That opportunity came when Luke decided to organize a massive bed-building event in the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina. The goal was to build 3,000 beds in just 24 hours for children who didn’t have a bed of their own. To achieve this, Luke and his team worked tirelessly on the planning. They created a detailed schedule, divided the volunteers into different teams, and arranged for the delivery of all the necessary materials. On the event day, more than 2,500 volunteers flooded into the Charlotte Convention Center. They came from all walks of life — students, corporate teams, and families — united by a single purpose. The work of building beds began in the volunteers’ busy activities. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ As the clock struck the 24-hour mark, the goal was met. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考范文: The work of building beds began in the volunteers’ busy activities. Volunteers were divided into groups, each responsible for a specific part of the bed-building process. Some were cutting the wood, some were assembling the frames, and others were attaching the mattresses and bedding. Luke moved around the center, encouraging the volunteers and making sure everything was running smoothly. As the hours passed, the number of completed beds kept increasing. The volunteers worked with great enthusiasm, knowing that they were making a real difference in the lives of children. As the clock struck the 24-hour mark, the goal was met. 3,000 beds stood ready for delivery. Luke addressed the volunteers, “This is just the beginning,” his voice trembling with emotion. “We’ve shown that when people come together, we can make a huge difference.” He thanked them for giving children the gift of sleep. And so, Luke and his team at SFP continued their mission, knowing that their efforts were bringing sweet dreams to children all across the country, just as they had set out to do. 词汇激活 行为类 ①来回巡视:move around/wander through ②整装待发:stand ready for delivery / be prepared to send out 情绪类 ①满腔热忱:great enthusiasm / intense passion ②激动动容:tremble with emotion / shake with mixed feelings 【点睛】【高分句型1】The volunteers worked with great enthusiasm, knowing that they were making a real difference in the lives of children. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
