For more than two decades, Isabella Ducrot, an artist who was born in Naples in 1931, has lived in an apartment in the center of Rome. When I knocked on her door this past spring, Ducrot, who is tall and upright, grasped my hand more firmly than I would have expected, saying, “I must tell you immediately that I have never been so happy in my life!”
Only in the past five years has Ducrot, who turned ninety-four in June, become internationally recognized for her art, which she didn’t even begin making until she was in her fifties. When creating her works, she stands and uses a brush sometimes attached to a stick, sweeping ink or paint onto paper. Typically made in series, her works are light, energetic, and beautiful. An Italian scholar writes that he, as well as many others, was amazed to discover that the creator of such delicate works is “a lady who is well over the age of eighty.” Of course, this reaction says as much about the limitations of the observer’s imagination as it does about the reaches of Ducrot’s.
Andrea Viliani, who will exhibit a selection of Ducrot’s works this summer, told me Ducrot is fortunate that her preferred methods and materials remain relatively easy for her to handle, compared with sculpting metal or painting with oils on heavy canvases (画布). “Her work is easy to hold, easy to paint, and easy to store,” Viliani said. “It is very convenient that she chose something so soft.”
We tend to assign to the elderly the vague (模糊的) and often fading quality of wisdom, thus suggesting that their own creative and intellectual growth has come to an end, and that their only role left is to give advice to others. Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: An individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end.
24. When did Ducrot begin creating art?
A. In her fifties. B. After she turned 90.
C. In the past five years. D. When she was young.
25. What does Viliani consider an advantage of Ducrot’s artistic methods?
A. They are delicate and soft. B. They are similar to sculpting.
C. They require heavy materials. D. They are convenient to handle.
26. What is the author’s attitude towards the common view of the elderly mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. Supportive. B. Critical. C. Neutral. D. Unclear.
27. What message does Ducrot’s life convey about aging?
A. Wisdom only comes with age.
B. Aging limits intellectual growth.
C. The elderly should stop creating.
D. One can stay open to new experiences.
C
Our lives are increasingly getting faster. A text message arrives, we feel it necessary to respond immediately. An email appears, and we interrupt whatever we were doing to acknowledge it. If something is asking for our attention right now, we believe it must deserve it. But urgency and importance are not the same thing.
Urgent matters demand immediate action. Important matters shape how we live our lives. The problem is that urgent matters are almost always easier to address. They arrive clearly defined and time-bound: Answer this message, meet this deadline. Once completed, they give us the satisfying feeling of progress.
Important matters, such as how we take care of our health and advance in our careers, unfold slowly. They require reflection rather than reaction. Questions in these areas don’t demand immediate answers, but you do have to answer them, since they greatly influence how you will live your life.
When we respond to immediate cues rather than consider distant consequences, we gradually shift our attention away from what matters most. We become good at managing the urgent while forgetting about what’s important. Over time, the patterns we create through reacting rather than reflecting solidify into what I like to call “life grooves.” The more deeply those grooves form, the harder they are to step out of. In this way, urgency culture can quietly limit our freedom.
Living well requires more than efficiently responding to external demands. It involves choosing actions and cultivating habits that reflect the kind of person you want to become. But reflection takes time, and urgency rarely makes space for it. So, one of the first steps to living well is choosing to give yourself the time to make good choices.
The question of how to spend a single afternoon may seem trivial (琐碎的), but the pattern of how we spend our afternoons shapes who we become. Not everything urgent is important, and the challenge is recognizing the difference before our habits create a life for us that we would rather not have.
28. What problem does the author point out in Paragraph 1?
A. People fail to distinguish urgency from importance.
B. Modern communication makes life more stressful.
C. Emails and messages are always time-consuming.
D. People have too many tasks to complete each day.
29. What does the underlined phrase “life grooves” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Ways to reflect on important matters. B. Physical tracks worn by daily activities.
C. Temporary solutions to urgent problems. D. Deep habits formed by constant reactions.
30. What can be inferred about important matters from the text?
A. They always require immediate action.
B. They are often overlooked due to urgency.
C. They are less valuable than urgent ones.
D. They are easier to identify than urgent ones.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. Urgent vs. Important: Know the Difference
B. How to Save Time in a Fast-Paced World
C. The Power of Immediate Response
D. Why We Should Ignore All External Demands
D
Sleep is one of the most fundamental building blocks of life. All animals sleep, from dogs to humans. It has long been known that sleep also plays a significant role in physical and emotional health. But nobody might think that memory and learning are acquired while one is sleeping. However, in fact, the researchers from the University of South Australia have recently found that just the reverse (相反) is true.
The researchers conducted an experiment with 35 native English speakers. These 35 participants were in the process of learning a mini-language called Mini Pinyan. Half of the students learned the language in the morning and then went on with their days, while the other half studied in the evening and then slept at the lab so that the researchers could record their brainwaves. Both groups were tested on their knowledge of Mini Pinyan in the morning, and the group that had slept soon after they studied performed significantly better than those who had not.
According to previous research, there are two phases that the brain cycles through when sleeping. The first is called REM sleep. During this phase, which usually takes place about an hour and a half after a person has fallen asleep, brain activity peaks and shows levels similar to when that person is awake. This is when dreams occur. In non-REM sleep, brain activity is low.
“Sleep is not just restful; it’s an active, transformative state for the brain,” Dr. Scott Cousins, a researcher of the study, said. They found that the improvements were linked to two types of brainwaves — slow oscillations and sleep spindles, which become coupled during non-REM sleep. The coupling of these brainwaves appears to help the transfer of information from the hippocampus to the cortex (大脑皮层), which is where long-term memory is stored.
There is no doubt that it is good news for anyone who wants to study a foreign language. What’s more, the implications of this study could also help improve the lives of those with language-related impairments (障碍). Now there is one more reason to get a good night’s sleep.
32. How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By presenting a common belief and then contradicting it.
B. By listing various animals that need sleep.
C. By describing a personal experience with learning.
D. By defining sleep as a basic need for life.
33. What was the key difference between the two groups in the experiment?
A. The time of day they studied. B. The language they learned.
C. The timing of sleep after learning. D. The length of their sleep period.
34. Why does the author mention the coupling of brainwaves in Paragraph 4?
A. To explain how memory is stored during sleep.
B. To compare REM sleep with non-REM sleep.
C. To show that sleep is a resting state.
D. To prove that dreams occur in REM sleep.
35. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage people to sleep more after studying a language.
B. To explain the differences between REM and non-REM sleep.
C. To describe the procedures of a scientific experiment on sleep.
D. To highlight the beneficial effects of sleep on learning and memory.

What if we could fight farm weeds with a precise strike instead of blanket chemicals? This vision is now becoming a reality in the farmlands of China. The HG Laser Weeder is a new machine developed by Huagong Tech. ____36____
This advancement responds directly to the persistent problems associated with traditional farming. ____37____ As a result, it has caused great harm to the environment, including the degradation of soil and the pollution of water. For China, a nation with vast agricultural lands, finding a sustainable solution is a matter of particular urgency.
So, how does this “robot farmer” work? ____38____ Its AI-powered visual system, trained on a vast database of plant images, acts as a smart “eye” that can distinguish weeds from crops in milliseconds. Once a weed is spotted, the robot delivers a precise laser beam (激光束) to each weed’s growth center, destroying key cells and causing the plant to die naturally, all without harming the surrounding crops or the soil.
____39____ In terms of efficiency, an advanced model equipped with 32 laser heads can destroy up to 320,000 weeds per hour. Through continuous operation, it achieves a weed control rate of over 95%. Ecologically, it significantly reduces the use of chemicals, thus cutting off a primary source of agricultural pollution.
The introduction of this technology is part of a broader shift toward automated and sustainable agriculture in China and abroad. ____40____ With this approach, data-driven tools enable farmers to manage their crops with greater accuracy and less dependence on chemicals, which points the way for a cleaner, more efficient future for farming.
A. The advantages of this approach are substantial.
B. It marks a major breakthrough in precision agriculture.
C. This technology signals a move toward precision agriculture.
D. The heavy use of chemical herbicides has continued for decades.
E. Now this new machine has already been widely adopted across China.
F. At its core, it combines artificial intelligence with advanced light technology.
G. However, the high cost of the laser weeder remains a major obstacle for most farmers.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语编写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was December 1944, just three days before Christmas and we still didn’t have a Christmas tree. World War II found many families struggling just to meet their needs, and Christmas trees seemed to be the furthest thing from their minds. Our family was no different. With six children I knew we would have a poor Christmas, but would it be without our family’s annual Christmas tree?
Early that morning Papa loaded all six of us children in the car and we headed for the closest Christmas tree lot. As we pulled into the lot I could hear myself saying, “We’re going to have a Christmas tree!”
Everyone piled out of the car and started running to a tree hoping it would be the one Papa would pick. He glanced around the lot knowing that this close to Christmas he could probably do some bargaining (讨价还价).
He walked over to the area marked $3. He looked at several of the trees, walked to another area and picked out one that was missing several branches. He approached the salesman and offered him 50 cents. The salesman looked at Papa and then at us six children. He offered a dollar instead. “Done,” Papa said.
I couldn’t believe what Papa had just done. He had just agreed to buy the ugliest Christmas tree I had ever seen. How could he? What was he thinking?
Papa reached into his pocket and pulled out a silver dollar. I realized at that moment it was all the money he had. He handed it to the salesman and picked up the tree, ordering all of us children back to the car while he tied it onto the roof.
After he had finished securing it to the car he walked over to where a large stack (堆) of branches lay on the ground and asked the salesman if he could take some. The salesman agreed and Papa picked up several and handed them to us to hold on our laps while we returned home.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we arrived, Papa quickly unloaded the tree.

【答案】17. B 18. A 19. C 20. C
【解析】
【原文】W: Jeans are simple trousers which began as workwear. In the past, miners and cowboys needed durable clothing that could last through long hard days of physical labor. Jeans were made of a strong cotton material called denim, which could resist wear and tear. In the late 1800s, a businessman named Levi Strauss together with a tailor named Jacob Davis created the first blue jeans for workers, and they became popular among laborers. In the 1950s, Hollywood stars like James Dean wore jeans in movies, and teenagers copied the style. Jeans became a symbol of youth culture. In the 1960s and 1970s, new styles appeared. Since the 1980s, famous fashion designers have added their labels, turning jeans into high-fashion items. They started producing jeans with different washes, cuts and finishes, making them suitable for various occasions. Today, jeans are worn by all ages, from children to the elderly. With so many choices — skinny, straight, bootcut or relaxed — it’s easy to find a pair that matches your personality. Jeans have truly come a long way from their humble beginnings as workwear, and they remain one of the most popular clothing items worldwide.

【答案】24. A 25. D 26. B 27. D
【解析】

【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Andrea Viliani, who will exhibit a selection of Ducrot’s works this summer, told me Ducrot is fortunate that her preferred methods and materials remain relatively easy for her to handle, compared with sculpting metal or painting with oils on heavy canvases (画布).(今年夏天将展出Ducrot部分作品的Andrea Viliani表示,相较于金属雕塑、厚重画布油画,Ducrot所选用的创作方式和材料相对易于操作,这是她的幸运。)”可知,Viliani认为Ducrot的艺术创作方式便于操作、十分便捷。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“We tend to assign to the elderly the vague (模糊的) and often fading quality of wisdom, thus suggesting that their own creative and intellectual growth has come to an end, and that their only role left is to give advice to others. Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: An individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end.(我们往往认为老年人只剩日渐消退的智慧,创造力和智力发展已然停滞,只能为他人提供建议,而Ducrot的人生印证了另一种可能:人可以始终保持热忱,终生接纳新鲜事物、体验新生活。)”可推知,作者不认同这种大众对老年人的固化观点,对此持批判态度。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“Ducrot’s life offers an alternative possibility: An individual might keep wide-eyed and open to experience until the very end.(Ducrot的人生印证了另一种可能:人可以始终保持热忱,终生接纳新鲜事物、体验新生活。)”可知,Ducrot的人生经历告诉人们,人年老后依旧可以接纳新体验、保持鲜活的心态。
【答案】28. A 29. D 30. B 31. A
根据文章第一段“If something is asking for our attention right now, we believe it must deserve it. But urgency and importance are not the same thing. (如果有事情现在就需要我们关注,我们就会认为它理应得到我们的关注。但紧急和重要并不是一回事。)”可知,作者在第一段指出的问题是人们没能区分紧急和重要二者。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“Over time, the patterns we create through reacting rather than reflecting solidify into what I like to call “life grooves”. The more deeply those grooves form, the harder they are to step out of. (久而久之,这种遇事只会被动反应、不加思考的固定模式,就固化成了我所说的‘life grooves’。这种模式形成得越深,就越难摆脱。)”可知,划线短语指长期被动应对紧急事务、不主动思考所形成的固定深层生活习惯模式,即生活惯性,对应选项D。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“When we respond to immediate cues rather than consider distant consequences, we gradually shift our attention away from what matters most. We become good at managing the urgent while forgetting about what’s important. (当我们总是回应即时的信号,不考虑长远结果时,我们会逐渐把注意力从最重要的事情转移走。我们变得擅长处理紧急事务,却遗忘了重要事务。)”可推知,人们忙于处理紧急事务,常常忽略重要事情。即重要事务常常因为紧急事务被人们忽略。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“Our lives are increasingly getting faster. A text message arrives, we feel it necessary to respond immediately. An email appears, and we interrupt whatever we were doing to acknowledge it. If something is asking for our attention right now, we believe it must deserve it. But urgency and importance are not the same thing. (我们的生活节奏变得越来越快。一条短信发来,我们就觉得必须立刻回复;一封邮件弹出,我们会停下手中正在做的一切去处理。只要有事情当下需要我们关注,我们就认为这件事理应优先处理。但紧急和重要根本不是一回事。)”及最后一段“Not everything urgent is important, and the challenge is recognizing the difference before our habits create a life for us that we would rather not have. (并非所有紧急的事都是重要的,我们面临的挑战是,在习惯为我们塑造出我们不想要的生活之前,认清二者的区别。)”并结合全文可知,文章围绕紧急事务和重要事务的区别展开,讨论了人们混淆二者带来的问题,呼吁人们认清二者的区别。选项A“Urgent vs. Important: Know the Difference (紧急事务与重要事务:分清二者区别)”能概括全文主旨,适合作为标题。
【答案】32. A 33. C 34. A 35. D

I’m glad to receive your letter and tell you about our school’s Green Earth environmental activities. We took a professional waste-sorting lecture to learn how to classify rubbish properly. Besides, we held a second-hand goods exchange fair, where we traded unused books, stationery and clothes.
I really enjoyed the activities. It felt great to reuse old things instead of throwing them away. Now I fully understand environmental protection is vital. It saves limited natural resources and reduces pollution. Small daily efforts together can make a huge difference to our planet.
Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As we arrived, Papa quickly unloaded the tree.

That evening all of the family gathered to decorate the tree.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 As we arrived, Papa quickly unloaded the tree. He carefully set the lopsided, bare-branched trunk in the wooden stand he had kept in the basement for years, then pulled out the extra branches we had carried home. With a roll of thin wire he had saved from work, he gently fastened the full, fragrant branches to the sparse spots on the tree, filling in the gaps until the once-ugly tree began to look full and lush. We children stood around him, passing him branches, our earlier disappointment melting away as we watched the shabby tree transform little by little.
That evening all of the family gathered to decorate the tree. We pulled out our old homemade ornaments — paper chains we had cut in art class, tiny wooden stars Papa had carved for us, and a few faded glass baubles that had been Mama’s when she was a girl. Mama lit the few candles we had saved, turning the patched tree into the most beautiful one we had ever seen. As we sang Christmas carols around it, huddling close to stay warm, I realized the tree wasn’t ugly at all — it was full of Papa’s love, and that was the best Christmas gift we could ever have.
