根据第二自然段“ How did they do? Not that well. D项“Maybe not quite as well as we think, said a scientific study. 【32题详解】 根据上文“In the experiment, according to Longo, “people think their hands are wider than they actually are.” 以及下文“They were most accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up to their pinkies (小指). F项“They also thought their fingers were shorter than their true lengths. 【34题详解】 根据下文“So the experiment the team conducted was to find those maps. G项“Our brains know the body sizes and shapes from the maps they make for themselves. 【35题详解】 根据下文“On the basis of the study, in our brain’s map, brains “see” areas based on our sense of touch. The stronger the sense of touch in a specific body part is, the bigger that body part seems. An example is our lips. As they have more nerves than our noses, our brain’s map shows our lips are bigger. A项“More nerves, larger a body part seems. 【36题详解】 根据上文“On the basis of the study, in our brain’s map, brains “see” areas based on our sense of touch. The stronger the sense of touch in a specific body part is, the bigger that body part seems. An example is our lips. As they have more nerves than our noses, our brain’s map shows our lips are bigger. E项“The same can happen with body parts having a lot of nerves. A. in turn轮流;B.in reality实际上;C. in order按次序的;D. in place适当的。根据上文“For many people, the perfect career would be one in which they do what they love to make a living”说对许多人来说,完美的职业是做自己喜欢的事情来谋生和常识可知但是事实上并不是所有的职业都是自己喜欢做的事情,故选A。 A. political政治的;B. religious宗教的;C. financial财务的;D. cultural文化的。根据上文“not many have either the luck or the luxury to do so”可知不是所有人都能拥有自己喜欢做的职业和常识可知,最有可能是财务原因,因为大部分工作会考虑到赚钱谋生的问题,故选C。 A. ashamed羞耻的;B. afraid害怕的;C. aware意识到的;D. fond喜欢。 A. for为了;B. into对…… 根据上文“but decided to pursue his dream, anyway”可知他想做他喜欢的事情,be into为固定搭配,意为“对…… A. range系列;B. group组;C. flash闪现;D. block一块。根据下文“Lian had the idea of ______ his interests and career.” A. developing发展;B. combining结合;C. abandoning放弃;D. losing失去。根据上文“A huge basketball fan growing up, and good at a ______ of drawing methods”可知她既是篮球迷,又喜欢画画,所以想将二者结合起来,故选B。 A. Learning how to look at and understand artworks requires us to take the time to view, identify and think. Look at the Art As the first step, it's necessary to take a moment to recognize the artwork's general characteristics: ● Is it a panting, sculpture or craftwork? ● Does it appear disordered or organized? ● Are the colors bright or soft? Identify the Art and Artist Knowing when or how the artwork was made and learning something about the artist can reveal more context. We all know the famous painting Guernica is a masterpiece created by Picasso in 1937.However, if we can find out Picasso composed the painting to reflect a bombing during the Spanish Civil War,we' know more about its anti-war meaning. Even if the historical context of an artwork is not obvious, knowing the year of its creation offers more context. Think About the Meaning Use what you observed in the first two steps to think about meanings the artwork could have. Consider what the title, the subjects, or the symbols meant to the artist when he or she created the artwork. What do the colors say about the artist, and how do they apply to the subjects in the art? For example, the owls in Lebo's works stand for wisdom, but why are they so brightly colored? In addition, ask about the feelings it gives you. Many artists have specific meanings behind their art, but also encourage viewers to come up with their own explanations. Still, every explanation is not automatically correct, which is why the techniques described above are helpful in finding clues. The next time you're admiring a work of art, keep these techniques in mind, and its meaning may unfold before your eyes. 21. What is the first step when viewing art? A. Doing some research on the artist. B. Being “in-the-know”about the work. C. Identifying the work's general features. D. Knowing the year or an artwork's creation. 22. When thinking about the meaning of an artwork, you should A. explain it freely B. choose a title for it C. describe it to the viewers D. ask how it makes you feel 23. Who is the passage intended for? A. museum staff. B. gallery visitors. C. professional artists. D. exhibition organizers. B E. O. Wilson, “the Darwin of the 21st century”, is considered the world’s leading expert on ants and a pioneer of the theory of biodiversity. Wilson was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1929. When he was young, he was crazy about the natural world and spent his childhood exploring woods and observing insects. When he was in high school, he narrowed his focus down to the study of insects. After earning his master’s degree in biology in the University of Alabama, he went to Harvard University to work for a PhD in 1951. After graduation, he remained there for his career as a teacher. Wilson authored many books and was awarded quite a few prizes, such as the Crafoord Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for General Nonfiction. Wilson has a strong gift for storytelling and narrative. His books are easy to understand and can attract readers, even those who don’t care much for scientific topics. In his writings, Wilson further enlarged his study from biology to other subjects, such as sociobiology, geography and even art. The friendship between the scientist Finch and Wilson is also worth mentioning. “On his 88th birthday he wanted to collect ants in the delta so we wandered through an Alabama woodland,” Finch recalled, “We also went to other areas like two boys getting into the woods.” After retiring from teaching in 1996, Wilson founded the E. O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation to promote worldwide understanding of the importance of biodiversity. “He’s still writing,” said Finch. “He always tells me,” This is my last book. “But he actually told me that six books ago.” 24.Which of the following can best describe Wilson’s books? A. Critical and serious. B. Creative and useful. C. Attractive and understandable. D. Professional and complex. 25.What can we infer from the text? A. Wilson is a leading expert on insects B. Wilson covered many subjects in his books. C. Wilson studied for a PhD in the University of Alabama. D. Wilson’s books don’t attract those who are not into science. 26.What does the last paragraph imply? A. Wilson loves travelling very much. B. Wilson often tells lies to his friend. C. Wilson is good at wealth management. D. Wilson has been working and studying hard all his life. 27.Which of the following can be the best title of the text? A. The great books by E. O. Wilson B. E. O. Wilson’s contributions to biology C. E. O. Wilson—the Darwin of the 21st century D. The valuable friendship between Finch and E. O. Wilson C Here’s an idea whose time has come: A flu shot that doesn’t require an actual shot. For the first time, researchers have tested a flu vaccine patch (疫苗贴) in a human clinical trial and found that it delivered as much protection as a traditional injection with a needle (注射针). Doctors and public health experts have high hopes that it will increase the number of people who get immunized (免疫的) against the flu. Seasonal flu is responsible for up to half a million deaths around the world each year according to the World Health Organization. A team led by Georgia Tech engineer Mark Prausnitz has come up with another method that uses “microneedles”. These tiny needles are so small that 100 of them, arranged in order on a patch, can fit under your thumb. Yet they’re big enough to hold vaccine for three types of flu. None of the study volunteers had serious side effects. The groups that got patches had mild skin reactions that were not seen in the regular needle group, while the volunteers in the regular needle group were more likely to experience pain. Overall, 70 percent of the volunteers who got vaccine patches said they’d rather use them again than get a traditional flu shot. The study authors declared it a success on all fronts. The biggest beneficiaries (受益者) could be people in low-and middle-income countries, where flu vaccines are hard to come by. Reducing pain is nice, but other benefits ---- the patch costs less, is easier to transport, doesn’t require fridge, can be self-administered and doesn’t cause waste of needles ---- are even better.“ Microneedle Patches have the potential to become ideal candidates for vaccination programs,” wrote Katja Hoschler and Maria Zambon of Public Health England. 28. What do we know about the vaccine patch? A. It causes slight side effects. B. It delivers vaccine to the little finger. C. It is produced by the WHO. D. It works badly on 30% of the volunteers. 29. The new patch has all the following benefits except that . A. it can be used without a doctor B. it is provided free of charge C. it can be kept at room temperature D. it needs less care in transportation 30. What is Kaija and Maria’s attitude towards the new shot? A. Cautious. B. Disapproving. C. Indifferent. D. Supportive. 31. What is the passage mainly about? A. A vaccine patch that makes flu shots a thing of the past. B. A clinical study that protects people from disease. C. A vaccine patch that cures people of their flu. D. A method that makes traditional flu shots painless. In English it’s common to say, “I know this town like the back of my hand!” While we may know our towns really well, how well do we actually know our hands? 32 Matthew Longo and his team from University College London studied the left hands of 100 people. With their hands placed palms down under a board, Longo’s team gave the instruction to point to their knuckles (指关节) and fingertips with a marker pen. How did they do? Not that well. In the experiment, according to Longo, “people think their hands are wider than they actually are.” 33 They were most accurate when finding their thumbs, but became less accurate with each finger, up to their pinkies (小指). “It is connected to our sense of position,” explained Longo. Humans know where different parts of our bodies are, even if we can’t see them. It tells us whether a joint (关节) is straight or not. 34 So the experiment the team conducted was to find those maps. 35 On the basis of the study, in our brain’s map, brains “see” areas based on our sense of touch. The stronger the sense of touch in a specific body part is, the bigger that body part seems. An example is our lips. As they have more nerves than our noses, our brain’s map shows our lips are bigger. 36 If you’ve ever had something stuck in your teeth, it probably feels huge! That’s because our tongues also have lots of nerves. A. More nerves, larger a body part seems. B. Let’s see how our humans know our body parts. C. It’s essential to the sizes and shapes of our body. D. Maybe not quite as well as we think, said a scientific study. E. The same can happen with body parts having a lot of nerves. F. They also thought their fingers were shorter than their true lengths. G. Our brains know the body sizes and shapes from the maps they make for themselves. For many people, the perfect career would be one in which they do what they love to make a living, but 37 , not many have either the luck or the luxury to do so, given 38 concerns and other considerations. They drove through green meadows and clear streams. In the afternoon, their journey brought them to a charming lake where they encountered a weathered man who introduced himself as Ben. Ben sat calmly by the water with his fishing rod(鱼竿) leaning on a nearby rock. Sam's eyes had been fixed on the bobber(浮漂) floating on the water's surface since their arrival. His fascination with nature had always driven him to ask questions and seek out new adventures. “Uncle Ben, are you fishing? Have you caught a fish?” he asked, his curiosity bubbling over. A warm smile spread Ben's face as he regarded the young boy's eager expression. “Indeed, I am, young man,” he replied, “but as for catching a fish, well, that's a story yet to be told.” Observing their son express his curiosity and effortlessly strike up a conversation with Ben, Sam’s parents exchanged warm, knowing smiles. They realized that this chance encounter with Ben could lead to some valuable lessons. “Can you teach me how to fish?” asked Sam, his voice filled with enthusiasm. “Well, young man,” Ben replied, “fishing is more than just catching fish. It's about patience and embracing the wait. If you're willing to learn, I'd be happy to teach you.” With that, Ben reached for another fishing rod and invited Sam to join him. He demonstrated (示范)how to cast the line into the lake, hold the fishing rod steady, and patiently await a curious fish to take the bait(鱼饵). He then showed Sam how to respond when the bobber moved. Charmed by the graceful art of fishing, Sam couldn't wait to give it a try. As he sat down beside Uncle Ben, he appeared as calm and relaxed as the skilled fisherman.
