The Maya (玛雅人) were good at math. They counted in groups of 20, not 10. They wrote numbers in columns going up. The bottom row was the “1s” column, the next row up was 20s, then 400s, and so on. For digits, they used a dot for 1, a line for 5, and a shell shape to show zero. Numbers 1 to 19 were written with a combination of lines and dots.
(Fig.1)
The number 414 (one 400s +no 20s+fourteen 1s) would be like this:
(Fig.2)
A Maya village might keep a record of the pumpkins they harvested like this:
(Fig.3)
The Maya also had three different calendars. The first divided the year into 18 months, each of which had 20 days, plus a 5-day short month. The Maya believed that they were terribly troubled by the evil spirits in the short month.
The second calendar repeated every 260 days. This was used to plan celebrations and predict future. This calendar counted 13 months of 20 days each. Each date had its own set of symbols.
When talking about events long ago, they used a calendar called the “long count.” This covered about 5,125 years. Year 1 on this calendar was 3114 BCE on our calendar.
Each city and village had a calendar keeper, who was in charge of saying when to celebrate holidays and when to expect rain or plant crops. But the Maya could also tell the time of the year from the sun and stars.
21. How many pumpkins did the Maya village harvest according to Figure 3?
A. 109. B. 409. C. 439. D. 1,209.
22. What did the Maya think of the short month in the first calendar?
A. Unimportant. B. Unlucky. C. Unnecessary. D. Unusual.
23. What is the text aimed at?
A. Planning a travel to the Maya ruins.
B. Presenting the Maya artistic symbol.
C. Reporting the ancient Maya agriculture.
D. Introducing the Maya scientific achievements.

That day, Budimir Šobat lay face down in a swimming pool for 24 minutes and 37 seconds. Before the attempt, he’d breathed pure oxygen for 30 minutes — enough to let him hold his breath for over 20 minutes, but risky: blacking out (昏厥) could cause deadly reactions. Midway, he got feared briefly, and then repeated a few quiet words to calm himself down. When he lifted his head, he’d beaten the Guinness World Record by over 30 seconds. A small crowd cheered, but Šobat just changed clothes, packed his belongings, and met his family. They didn’t even mention the record.
Šobat’s drive came from his daughter, Saša, born with brain damage. Doctors said she might never walk or talk. He and his wife Sandra left their old lives behind to train Saša, 5 to 7 hours a day: stretching her fingers alone took 45 minutes, and they even had to hold her still to relax the muscles in her small neck — even as she screamed and Sandra begged him to stop. Two and a half years later, Saša took her first step, and she was later found to have autism (自闭症), too.
At 46, a friend introduced Šobat to freediving. He found peace in this sport, and soon realized the patience he’d gained from looking after Saša — waiting 5 to 10 minutes just for her to answer a simple question — helped him hold his breath longer. He later joined a charity activity called I’m Not Breathing to raise money for the autism center where his daughter received treatment, since he’d long wanted to draw attention to autism and help families like his.
“You can be better than me, but you’ll never beat me,” says Šobat, now 60. Saša may never know her father is a world record holder, but that’s okay. For him, every second he spends holding his breath underwater is for her.
24. Which was Šobat’s reaction after he broke the world record?
A. He expressed his excitement. B. He celebrated with his family.
C. He cheered with a small crowd. D. He behaved surprisingly calmly.
25. What did Šobat do to his daughter with her brain damage?
A. He trained her in a strict way.
B. He introduced her to freediving.
C. He spent little quality time with her.
D. He begged her to relax and enjoy life.
26. What can be concluded about Šobat’s freediving performance?
A. It went against medical advice.
B. It benefited from his parenting.
C. It served as an escape from work.
D. It required extra financial support.
27. What is the best title for the text?
A. Understanding a Girl with Autism B. The Depths of a Father’s Devotion
C. A Champion Freediver’s Technique D. Breaking Barriers through Determination

People usually think wildfires only harm forests. In fact, wildfires can be good for most forest ecosystems. They clear dead leaves and branches on the ground, return useful nutrients into the soil, and help new plants grow healthily.
For over 100 years, the US has spent billions of dollars stopping wildfires. This policy aims to protect local communities, public facilities and special natural areas. It successfully avoids sudden fire dangers. However, it also stops the natural wildfires that forests need to stay healthy. As a result, much bigger and more serious wildfires are likely to break out in the future.
A new study has found a serious problem in western America. Nearly 38 million hectares of land there has far fewer wildfires than it had in history. Scientists name this unusual situation a “fire deficit”.
Winslow Hansen, a forest ecology expert, explained that weather is becoming warmer and drier now. This makes wildfires much bigger than before. Even so, people still keep the old habit of putting out every wildfire, which has lasted for 150 years. Dry weather and strong fuels will make future fire risks much higher.
To study the “fire deficit”, scientists analyzed soil samples and other geographic data. They compared the fire frequency in history with the fire situations in modern times. The result showed that 74% of land in the western US is suffering from the fire deficit problem. To fix this problem, about 3.8 million hectares of forests need proper wildfires every year for the next ten years. In total, it will cover the 38 million hectares of problematic land. This task sounds difficult, but scientists have practical solutions, including removing extra plants to reduce flammable (易燃的) materials, and leaving some small wildfires burn naturally under safe control.
Some wildfires today are actually helpful. They reduce too many plant fuels on the ground and help forests recover. Experts suggest that we should not stop all wildfires. When the risk is low, these natural fires can play an important role in protecting forest ecosystems.
28. What will happen if we keep stopping wildfires?
A. Healthier soil rebirth. B. Increased immediate risks.
C. Naturally stable ecosystems. D. More dangerous future fires.
29. What is the key discovery of the new study on western US?
A. Climate is getting less warm.
B. Fire prevention brings many benefits.
C. The century-old tradition is left behind.
D. Nearly 3 quarters of its land is in need of wildfires.
30. What does the underlined word “deficit” mean?
A. A sudden outbreak. B. Effective prevention.
C. An insufficient amount. D. An unexpected increase.
31. What is the main idea of the text?
A. Wildfires always bring great damage to all kinds of forests.
B. American scientists find ways to put out dangerous wildfires.
C. Proper natural wildfires are necessary for forest ecosystems.
D. People have stopped most wildfires to protect local communities.

The rise of AI tools, such as chatbots, is transforming how we learn and work. However, recent academic studies suggest that over-relying on AI might negatively affect our cognitive (认知的) abilities, a concern sometimes referred to as “brain rot.”
Professor Shiri Melumad’s experiment involved 250 people giving advice on a healthy lifestyle. Participants either used traditional Google searches or AI-generated summaries. The AI users produced nonspecific and unhelpful advice, like “eat healthy foods.” In contrast, those using traditional search provided more detailed suggestions, covering various aspects of physical and mental wellness. This indicates that heavy AI dependence can result in less effective outcomes.
Another significant study from MIT looked into AI’s impact on writing and memory. Researchers asked college students to write essays, dividing them into groups: one used ChatGPT, another Google search, and a third relied solely on their own knowledge. Brain activity sensors revealed that ChatGPT users showed the lowest brain activity, as the AI performed much of the cognitive effort.
Notably, just one minute after completing their essays, a striking 83% of ChatGPT users could not recall a single sentence they had written. Google users remembered some parts, while students who used no technology could recall most of their essays almost perfectly. The lead researcher stressed that without remembering what you create, you lose a sense of ownership. These findings suggest that AI tools might block true learning and deep understanding.
32. What did Professor Shiri Melumad’s experiment reveal about AI-generated advice?
A. It was preferred by most participants.
B. It tended to be general and less practical.
C. It covered a wider range of wellness topics.
D. It was more detailed than traditional search results.
33. How did the MIT study measure the cognitive impact of using ChatGPT?
A. By surveying users’ sense of concept.
B. By comparing essay scores among groups.
C. By analyzing the length of essays produced.
D. By recording participants’ recall rates after writing.
34. Why does the author say ChatGPT users lose a sense of ownership when using it to write?
A. The articles are too simple and empty.
B. Their writing skills become much worse.
C. AI takes away people’s communication chances.
D. They write by AI largely and cannot remember the content.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards AI tools?
A. Fully supportive. B. Completely indifferent.
C. Critically concerned. D. Highly enthusiastic.

Having too many choices may cause anxiety, and this special condition is called decidophobia, which means the fear of making decisions. However, we have several effective methods to solve this problem.
36
When we face countless choices, we usually prefer to do nothing to avoid making wrong decisions, but this is not a long-term solution. So we are supposed to focus on key matters and ignore tiny unimportant details. We can arrange our daily life by finishing regular decisions ahead of time, such as choosing clothes the night before or keeping the same breakfast every day. 37
Make it manageable
You can follow easy steps to make your decisions better. First, think about the advantages and disadvantages of different choices and listen to your real feelings. Just keep three or four of the most practical choices. 38 Getting advice from independent people, instead of your close friends or family members, can help you look at things more objectively.
Set deadlines
To avoid decidophobia stopping you from making choices, set a clear and reasonable time limit for yourself to pick your most suitable option. 39
Seek professional help
If decidophobia greatly influences your mood and daily life, you can seek professional help. Some scientific treatment can help you change negative thoughts and develop better ways to deal with problems. 40
A. Reduce your decisions.
B. These small habits waste mental energy.
C. That lowers the number of daily choices.
D. This can greatly improve your overall quality of life.
E. Then, gather information that will help with the decision.
F. This will also prevent you from exploring the unwanted options.
G. Reevaluate any “bad” decisions to see if they were truly disastrous.

At the age of nine, I was informed that my family would travel to China to spend the dreamed-of summer holiday. I was greatly excited — never before had I seen the Great Wall and the Forbidden City by myself, but I was to feel the amazing history of China!
In the days to follow, I pictured the grand palaces, the impressive gates, and the wonderful stories hidden everywhere. Then came the day when we arrived in Beijing. I could hardly wait to admire the most magnificent buildings I had only seen on TV. Beijing was really fantastic.
There was nothing like the incredible Forbidden City standing in front of me. Under the sun shone the golden roofs. The delicately-carved shapes exposed the mysterious stories of emperors and empresses. Moreover, at the sight of the huge courtyards, I felt like I had entered a fairy tale world. Something amazing stood everywhere — a dragon statue, a marble stair, a hidden garden etc — and I couldn’t help taking pictures, eager to record all of them. My parents couldn’t help laughing when I pulled them from here to there, wanting one more photo.
The striking colors impressed me deeply. The pure yellow rooftops against the deep red walls looked majestic (威严的). The stone passages looked glittering, bearing the footsteps of hundreds of years. I felt a carved marble handrail (扶手), wondering how many people had touched it in over hundreds of years.
The Forbidden City was crowded with tourists who spoke different languages with the same amazement hanging on their faces. They appreciated architecture carefully, took pictures happily and thought deeply. Everyone really felt the magic of this time-honoured place.
With the dusk approaching, I followed my parents toward the exit. The sea of people overwhelming, I grasped my father’s hand tightly, feeling the noise, the heat, and the excitement in the crowd. Suddenly, I looked down at the large hand I was holding. To my surprise, I was not holding my father’s hand.

Just give your name, age and school address and maybe you will be on TV soon. Now listen carefully. I want to tell you about a new TV quiz show for teenagers. It's called answer that and IT will be on channel five at four o'clock every thursday. I will be just like the popular adult quiz show on the same channel on monday afternoon. Every week, there will be forty eight teenagers on the program. There will be in eight teams, and each team will have six people. The questions will be easy at the beginning of the quiz, and then the questions will get more difficult. They will all be about films, music and TV. At the end, there will be only one team left the winners. There will be some great prizes this week. The winners will all get a new camera. Everyone loves taking photos next week. The first prize is a laptop. If you would like to be on answer that, then call zero two eight, eight, five, seven, eight, nine. 66. (One Possible Version)
The quote highlights how essential early habits are in shaping our future.I believe it means that habits
established during childhood or teenage years have a long-lasting impact on our character, health, and
success.
For example, when I was in middle school,I formed the habit of reading for 30 minutes every night
before sleep. At first,it felt like a small effort, but over time,it greatly improved my vocabulary and critical
thinking skills. Now,as a high school student,I find it much easier to handle complex reading materials in
various subjects. This simple habit, built early, has truly made a positive difference in my academic life.
Therefore,I strongly agree that cultivating good habits in youth is key to future achievements.
(One Possible Version)
In that split second,I was at a loss.Grabbed by panic,I released my hand immediately,my palm
sweating wildly.I searched for my parents in the mounting crowd, but they disappeared out of nowhere.I
was on the point of collapsing when a sweet voice comforted me.It was a friendly Chinese man that detected
my worry. He knelt down to my height, patted my shoulder and asked in fluent English whether I couldn't
find my parents.Nodding "yes"to him,I saw him smiling kindly. Then,he told me to stay calm and offered
to help me find them. When I perched on his broad shoulders at the exit,he told my situation to the leaving
crowd again and again.Suddenly,I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
Helped by the kind Chinese man,I saw my father. He hurried through the crowd, his face pale with
worry.Instantly he saw me he hugged me tightly.Meanwhile,my mother followed closely behind, tears of
relief streaming down her face.Knowing what great help the Chinese man had given to me,my parents
approached the kind man, gave him the thumbs up and expressed to him the deepest gratitude.Shaking"no"
to my parents,he smiled warmly, waved goodbye graciously and disappeared quickly into the crowd. It was
at the fleeting moment that thanks crowded in on our minds. We came to know that the beauty of the
Forbidden City lasts long, while the inner beauty of the kind Chinese lasts forever.
意,对应选项unlucky(不吉利的)。
However,it also stops the natural wildfires that forests
need to stay healthy. As a result, much bigger and more serious wildfires are likely to break out in the future.
Dry weather and strong fuels will make future fire risks much higher.
29.D. The result showed that74%of land in the western US is
suffering from the fire deficit problem. To fix this problem, about 3.8 million hectares of forests need proper
wildfires every year.。
32.B.原文指出AI用户给出的建议是“nonspecific and unhelpful,like‘eat healthy foods”,而
33.D.文中明确写道:“just one minute after completing their essays,a striking83%of ChatGPTusers
could not recall a single sentence they had written.”
A出
表示AI工具“might hinder true learning and deep understanding''。
A(完全支持)和D(高度热

56.stretching.
57.to drive.
59.was included. 主语it(指代the festival)与include之间为被动关系(被列入名
60.since.
6l.heavily.

63.that(which).
64.keeping.
完整形式为while it is keeping,省略后保留现在分词keeping,表示主动进行。
65.visitors..考查词性转化,tens of thousands of后面跟复数名词,注意拼写,动词visit后面加-or

(One Possible Version)
The quote highlights how essential early habits are in shaping our future. I believe it means that habits established during childhood or teenage years have a long-lasting impact on our character, health, and success.
For example, when I was in middle school, I formed the habit of reading for 30 minutes every night before sleep. At first, it felt like a small effort, but over time, it greatly improved my vocabulary and critical thinking skills. Now, as a high school student, I find it much easier to handle complex reading materials in various subjects. This simple habit, built early, has truly made a positive difference in my academic life.
Therefore, I strongly agree that cultivating good habits in youth is key to future achievements.
(One Possible Version)
In that split second, I was at a loss. Grabbed by panic, I released my hand immediately, my palm sweating wildly. I searched for my parents in the mounting crowd, but they disappeared out of nowhere. I was on the point of collapsing when a sweet voice comforted me. It was a friendly Chinese man that detected my worry. He knelt down to my height, patted my shoulder and asked in fluent English whether I couldn’t find my parents. Nodding “yes” to him, I saw him smiling kindly. Then, he told me to stay calm and offered to help me find them. When I perched on his broad shoulders at the exit, he told my situation to the leaving crowd again and again. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice calling my name.
Helped by the kind Chinese man, I saw my father. He hurried through the crowd, his face pale with worry. Instantly he saw me he hugged me tightly. Meanwhile, my mother followed closely behind, tears of relief streaming down her face. Knowing what great help the Chinese man had given to me, my parents approached the kind man, gave him the thumbs up and expressed to him the deepest gratitude. Shaking “no” to my parents, he smiled warmly, waved goodbye graciously and disappeared quickly into the crowd. It was at the fleeting moment that thanks crowded in on our minds. We came to know that the beauty of the Forbidden City lasts long, while the inner beauty of the kind Chinese lasts forever.
However, it also stops the natural wildfires that forests need to stay healthy. As a result, much bigger and more serious wildfires are likely to break out in the future. Dry weather and strong fuels will make future fire risks much higher.
The result showed that 74% of land in the western US is suffering from the fire deficit problem. To fix this problem, about 3.8 million hectares of forests need proper wildfires every year...。
32. B. 原文指出AI用户给出的建议是“nonspecific and unhelpful, like ‘eat healthy foods’”,而传统搜索用户提供了“more detailed suggestions, covering various aspects”,因此推断AI建议是笼统、不实用的。
33. D. 文中明确写道:“just one minute after completing their essays, a striking 83% of ChatGPT users could not recall a single sentence they had written.”
A(完全支持)和D(高度热情)与文意相反,B(完全漠不关心)不符合作者明确表达观点的事实。

56. stretching.
57. to drive.
59. was included.
60. since.
61. heavily.
62. sixth.
63. that(which).
64. keeping. 完整形式为while it is keeping,省略后保留现在分词keeping,表示主动进行。
65. visitors.考查词性转化,tens of thousands of后面跟复数名词,注意拼写,动词visit后面加-or变成名词。
2. 时态:以一般过去时为主,辅以一般将来时;
3. 人称:主要用第一人称;
4. 注意恰当地使用一些连词,使文章自然、流畅;

(Text 6)
M: I plan to travel to Rome during the holiday. Have you ever learnt about this ancient city?
W: Yes. Rome enjoys a history of more than two thousand years. The great ruler Caesar was in power in Rome from 49 BC to 44 BC. The city is famous for grand ancient buildings.
M: What kind of historic buildings can we see there?
W: You can see old stadiums, ancient palaces and stone streets. These buildings witnessed the rise and fall of the ancient empire.
M: Do these old buildings influence modern architecture?
W: Certainly. Many design ideas from ancient Rome are still widely used nowadays. They are important parts of European historical civilization.
(Text 7)
W: Hi, Mark. I’ve decided to leave the company. I had an amazing time here, but it is time for me to move on.
M: May I ask why, Cathy? I do hope that you stay with us here.
W: Well, you know, I’ve got a new job in a big engineering firm. It’s a management position.

M: That's been happening quite often recently. Do you realize that?
W: Yes, maybe it's because the final exams are near and everyone has a lot of questions to ask.
M: I guess so. After class there is always a group of students hanging around the professor asking questions.
W: How about you? Are you ready for the exams?
M: I have been preparing these days, but the mathematics questions are really my big headache.
W: Don't worry, John. There is still one month to go before the exam, and you have enough time to work them out.

M: Have you signed up for the wildlife volunteer activity this weekend?
W: Sure I have. I’ve long wanted to do something for animal protection.
M: What tasks will we take part in exactly?
W: We will first clear rubbish around the wetland reserve. Litter seriously disturbs living birds and small wild animals.
M: That matters a lot. Are there other jobs to do?
W: We also put up warning signs to stop tourists from getting close to animal habitats. Besides, we will hand out booklets to spread protection knowledge.
M: It sounds great. Many local creatures are losing safe living places these days.
W: Exactly. Small volunteer actions can effectively reduce harm to wildlife.
(Text 10)
