In the quiet dawn of Chenjiagou, Henan, 59-year-old Svetlana Kobiakova practices tai chi with silk-smooth movements. Known by her Chinese name Chen Yimei, this Russian woman has devoted herself to the art for 15 years.
Before discovering tai chi, Kobiakova worked as a physics teacher and a diamond researcher. Her world was strictly ruled by data and logic. Her introduction to tai chi happened accidentally when she watched someone practicing. She learned the basics from a teacher in Russia but soon found herself unable to make progress. Realizing that to learn true skills she must go to the root of the art, she traveled to Chenjiagou, the birthplace of Chen-style tai chi, in 2011.
There, she felt an unexplainable peace. The practice not only healed her bronchitis (支气管炎) but also reshaped her character, making her calm and positive. Her devotion deeply impressed her master, Chen Ziqiang. Between 2012 and 2015, she won five European championships and a silver medal at the World Taijiquan Championship. Today, she is a certified (有合格证书的) referee for the Russian Wushu Federation, the first foreign master to teach at Chenjiagou Taijiquan School, and the founder of her own tai chi school in Russia.
Kobiakova teaches students ranging from age 6 to 80. She believes that everyone who loves tai chi seeks inner peace and self-improvement. “Tai chi heals the body and inspires the spirit,” she explains. “It is a lifestyle, a philosophy, and a treasure to be shared worldwide.” Practicing about eight hours a day, she plans to continue promoting traditional Chen-style tai chi in Russia. Reflecting on her journey, she says, “Tai chi gave me a new life. I hope to spend my whole life passing this treasure on to the world.”

On October 29, Hurricane Melissa hit the Caribbean, causing great damage to Cuba, Jamaica, and other islands. With strong winds and heavy rain, it is one of the most powerful storms ever recorded in the Atlantic. In Cuba, a man walked through the ruins of his town and said, “The wind sounded like a roar, and within minutes, everything was gone.” Across the islands, hundreds of thousands of people have been left without power, and about 50 lives have been lost.
Jamaica was hit especially hard. Roads were washed away, and hospitals struggled to work without electricity. Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said, “Our top priority (优先) is to rescue people trapped by floodwaters and provide emergency supplies.” Rescue efforts are slow because blocked roads and ongoing rain have prevented help from reaching remote areas. A Red Cross spokesperson said, “We are doing everything we can, but we need more support from the world.”
Scientists link the storm’s power to warmer ocean temperatures. Dr. Maria Gonzalez explained, “Climate change is making hurricanes stronger. Warmer waters give storms more energy, leading to heavier rain and higher winds.” The hurricane also hurts the local economy, which depends on tourism and farming. Many resorts and farms are destroyed, leaving thousands jobless. Experts urge governments to build stronger infrastructure (基础设施) to prepare for future storms.
Despite the tragedy, there is hope. Communities are coming together to share supplies and rescue those in danger. “In times of crisis, we stand as one,” Holness says. “We will rebuild and come back stronger.”
8. What can we learn about Hurricane Melissa from the first paragraph?
A. It only hit Cuba. B. It was a weak storm.
C. It brought heavy snow. D. It caused great damage.
9. What is the top priority for the Jamaican government?
A. Rebuilding roads. B. Asking for support.
C. Rescuing trapped people. D. Preparing for future storms.
10. What can we infer from Dr. Maria Gonzalez’s words?
A. Hurricanes are getting weaker. B. Scientists can stop climate change.
C. Warmer oceans cause worse storms. D. Tourism will grow after the storm.
11. What is the passage?
A. A diary entry. B. A news report.
C. A scientific paper. D. An essay on disasters.

When people talk about the “balance of nature,” they often think of a perfect, unchanging harmony. But in reality, nature’s balance is more like a careful dance — and a small animal called the sea otter (海獭) shows exactly how it works.
Sea otters live in the cold waters of the North Pacific. They are top predators (捕食者) in a special underwater forest made of giant kelp (海带) . Kelp forests are homes to many fish, crabs, and other sea creatures.
The otters of a main food is the sea urchin (海胆) — a spiny, round animal that loves to eat kelp. If sea urchins are left alone, they can quickly eat up an entire kelp forest, leaving behind a bare, lifeless “urchin barren”. By eating sea urchins, sea otters keep their numbers low. This allows the kelp to grow thick and healthy. In this way, otters protect the whole forest.
Now imagine what happens if the otters disappear. This actually happened during the 18th and 19th centuries, when fur traders hunted sea otters almost to extinction (灭绝). Without otters, sea urchin populations exploded. The urchins ate nearly all the kelp, turning rich forests into empty wastelands. Many other animals lost their homes and food.
Thanks to conservation efforts, sea otters have returned to some areas. As they came back, they ate enough urchins to allow the kelp forests to grew. The whole ecosystem slowly recovered.
This story shows two important things. First, nature’s balance is not fixed — it depends on the actions of living creatures, especially key species like the sea otter. Second, this balance can be broken and then restored. In a very real sense, we humans play a part in protecting or disturbing that balance. And the sea otter reminds us that even a single small animal can hold an entire world together.
12. What can we know about sea otters from the passage?
A. They feed mainly on giant kelp. B. They prefer warm water for survival.
C. They are the only inhabitants of kelp forests. D. They hold a high position in the food chain.
13. What do the underlined words “urchin barren” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. A wasteland without kelp. B. A place full of sea urchins.
C. A hunting ground for otters. D. A thick and healthy kelp forest.
14. What does the author think the balance of nature is?
A. A fixed system. B. A human creation.
C. A dynamic process. D. A perfect harmony.
15. How does the author explain the balance of nature?
A. By listing scientific data. B. By presenting a case study.
C. By comparing two theories. D. By describing a personal story.

It was early June. The sun was setting over the small town of Maple Creek, Canada, but Lin Wei felt nothing but loneliness. “I don’t belong here,” Lin Wei whispered to himself.
He pulled a small card from his backpack. It was an invitation to Emma’s backyard party. Lin Wei didn’t want to go. He could already imagine standing awkwardly in a corner while the other kids joked and laughed. He closed his eyes and remembered: around this time last year, his grandma had taught him how to wrap zongzi — sticky rice with red beans, tied tightly with large bamboo leaves and strings. His grandma had also taken him to watch the dragon boat race. The drums thundered, the crowds cheered, and the colorful boats sliced across the water. That memory made his throat tight.
It was already dark when Lin Wei got home. His parents came back late from work again, looking worn out. “Maybe I should go to the party,” Lin Wei said slowly. “You keep saying I need friends.” His mother managed a tired smile. “That’s my boy,” she said. Lin Wei nodded, but inside he thought, Maple Creek will never feel like home.
On Friday evening, Lin Wei arrived at Emma’s house. Several classmates were decorating cupcakes. He noticed some sticky rice and red beans on the table- leftovers from Emma’s mother’s snacks. An idea struck him. He quietly asked Emma’s mother for some clean bamboo leaves. She handed him a few, confused but amused. Lin Wei began shaping the rice into triangles (三角形) with the leaves. The other kids stopped and stared. “What are you making?” asked a boy named Liam. “It’s a rice dumpling for a Chinese festival,” Lin Wei said softly. “What festival?” Liam asked again. A spark of joy rose in his chest.

第二节 (满分25分)
【47题答案】
【答案】 Paragraph 1: Lin Wei found himself surrounded by curious faces. Patiently, he introduced the history of the Dragon‑Boat Festival and taught the kids to wrap zongzi step by step. Some children struggled to tie bamboo leaves tightly, while others created funny‑shaped rice dumplings. Warm laughter spread through the backyard. As he shared his sweet memories with his grandma and exciting scenes of dragon‑boat races, Lin Wei lost his shyness completely. He felt proud of his traditional culture and gained confidence. For the first time, he truly felt welcomed among his classmates.
Paragraph 2: The next weekend, Lin Wei invited Emma and her friends to his home for a real Dragon Boat Festival celebration. His parents prepared fresh bamboo leaves and various delicious fillings in advance. Besides making zongzi together, they watched lively videos of dragon‑boat races. His friends sang and cheered while watching. Seeing their sincere love for Chinese culture, Lin Wei understood home meant friendship rather than only a location. With these kind friends, Maple Creek turned into his warm second home gradually. The loneliness that had troubled him for a long time finally disappeared completely.
