For many years, the kitchen was a place I was afraid of rather than enjoyed. Despite my love for food and the excitement of trying new flavors, I was often discouraged by the fear of failing or making mistakes.
When I was a little girl, cooking wasn’t something I was encouraged to try on my own. Most meals were prepared by family members who made them seemingly effortlessly, which only made me feel more incapable. When I attempted to help, I was easily discouraged by the complexity of recipes and the number of things I had to handle all at once — shopping, timing, seasoning, and more.
As I grew older, that fear didn’t fade. I often chose to order food or rely on simple, premade items because the kitchen seemed like a minefield where one misstep could lead to disaster.
One day, I reached a breaking point. I was tired of missing out on the satisfaction of making meals and wanted to feel more in control of what I ate. I decided that I had to face my fear head-on rather than avoid it.
My approach was to break things down into manageable steps. I picked recipes that were beginner-friendly and focused on mastering basic techniques before moving on to more complicated dishes. Initially (起初), I overcooked vegetables, mixed ingredients incorrectly, and at times completely forgot to add key components (成分). Instead of feeling defeated, I began viewing those moments as valuable lessons. Repetition was also key. By practicing simple recipes multiple times, I became more familiar with cooking processes. Repetition made me less anxious.
As I gained hands-on experience, I started feeling more capable and was willing to experiment with new recipes and ingredients. Now, the kitchen has become a playground of discovery for me.
4. What can be learned about the author as a child?
A. She could prepare most simple meals.
B. She was a good helper in the kitchen.
C. She often intended to try complex recipes.
D. She wasn’t motivated to cook on her own.
5. What does the underlined word “fade” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Balance. B. Disappear. C. Repeat. D. Erupt.
6. What were the author’s cooking sessions like at first according to paragraph 5?
A. They didn’t go very well. B. They ruined her confidence.
C. They were free from mistakes. D. They kept her in a good mood.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Learn a Lesson Eventually B. Overcome Fear in the Kitchen
C. Experiment with New Recipes D. Master Cooking Skills Effortlessly
C
Raccoons (浣熊), often called “trash pandas” for searching rubbish bins, are changing as they live closer to humans. A study suggests these masked mammals are even starting to look “cuter”, a result of living near us.
Scientists examined nearly 20,000 photos. They found urban raccoons have a “clear reduction in snout (吻部) length” compared to rural ones. This physical change is like early domestication in pets, suggesting urban raccoons are becoming more comfortable and less fearful around people, adapting to our world.
Raffaela Lesch, a co-author, explained “urban domestication” often begins with human waste. “Trash is really the kick-starter,” she said. “Wherever humans go, there’s trash — and animals love our trash.” This easy food source draws raccoons into human areas, increasing interaction.
Living near humans creates strong pressure. Raccoons less aggressive or afraid are more likely to find food, survive, and reproduce. Their genes for calmer behaviors and shorter snouts are passed on. This is consistent with “domestication syndrome”, physical changes like smaller facial bones, seen when animals adapt to humans. These traits are also seen in pets, like dogs from wolves.
The study highlights that only animals with “dampened flight responses” — less likely to run away when frightened — thrive (繁荣生存) in urban settings (successfully grow, develop, and flourish in city environments). This process is a clear example of natural selection. It reminds us that our daily lives and environments can lead to unexpected evolutionary (进化的) changes in the animal kingdom, showing the complex human-nature relationship.
8. What does urban raccoons’ reduced snout length imply?
A. Their sense of smell gets clearer. B. They feel much safer near people.
C. They increasingly refuse urban life. D. Their hunting abilities grow sharper.
9. Why does Raffaela Lesch call human trash a “kick-starter”?
A. To explain initial species interaction. B. To illustrate raccoons’ feeding habits.
C. To warn about environmental damage. D. To emphasize easy access to resources.
10. What helps raccoons succeed in urban areas?
A. Their rapid reproductive cycle. B. Their ability to find new homes.
C. Their improved sense of hearing. D. Their calmer, less fearful nature.
11. What can we conclude from this study?
A. Masked mammals are adaptable species. B. Human presence drives animal evolution.
C. Animals will always avoid human contact. D. Urban environments pose risks for wildlife.
D
AI models lack human senses like smell and touch, limiting their understanding of concepts such as flowers or humor. While advanced models show impressive language skills, their understanding nevertheless differs fundamentally from humans due to missing sensory experiences.
Researchers at the Ohio State University compared humans and AI models in understanding nearly 4,500 words. Both groups rated each word for a variety of aspects, such as the level of emotional arousal (唤醒) they bring to mind, or their links to senses and physical interaction with different parts of the body. It turns out that people and AI have a similar conceptual map of words that don't relate to interactions with the outside world, but differ greatly when words are linked to senses and physical actions.
The problem lies in AI models’ text-only training. Models trained on both images and text showed closer consistency with human responses. As researchers note: “Multi-modal training brings greater benefits than expected.” This suggests future AI models may need a robot body to gain such experience.
Philip Feldman at the University of Maryland says that giving AI models a robot body and exposing them to sensorimotor (感觉运动的) input would probably result in a jump in ability, but that we will have to be very careful about how this is done, given the risk of robots causing physical harm to people around them.
Avoiding such risks would mean adding limits to robot actions, or only using soft robots that can cause no harm for training, says Feldman — but that would have its own downsides.
“This is going to mess up their view of the world,” says Feldman. “One of the things they would learn is that you can bounce off (弹开) things, because they have little mass. Put such deep understanding that has to do with physical contact in a real robot with mass and you would have robots believing that they could just crash into each other at full speed.”
12. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us?
A. Sensory gaps limit AI models’ understanding.
B. Sensory training expands AI models’ capabilities.
C. AI models fail to understand complex human ideas.
D. AI models are better than humans at language skills.
13. How did researchers compare humans and AI models in the study?
A. By assessing their vocabulary.
B. By comparing their writing styles.
C. By testing their performance in a game.
D. By contrasting their interpretation of words.
14. What can be inferred about equipping AI models with a robot body?
A. It decreases their potential risks.
B. It boosts their learning competence.
C. It improves their ability to innovate.
D. It increases their chances of self-recovery.
15. What is Feldman mainly worried about regarding robots?
A. They may not move fast enough. B. They will lack basic emotions.
C. They might misjudge their strength. D. They could fail to follow orders.

You may have heard the old expression “shake it off”. It’s comforting to know that with the power of the mind, it’s possible to shift your perspective. Through letting go and moving forward, a brighter future may be possible. ____16____ An ancient mind-body technique called “somatic shaking” is becoming popular. The practice helps people release tension and reconnect with a sense of calm.
____17____ Dr. Scott Lyons, a clinical holistic psychologist, says that while every mammal (哺乳动物) does it naturally, it’s easy to overlook what your body needs in modern society. In fact, spending long hours on the computer, watching TV, or scrolling on your phone can cause the body to freeze or stay in a stressed state. “Shaking is literally the completion of the things we were meant to do as part of our human evolution (进化),” Lyons adds.
You can try this fun and simple activity each morning or whenever you feel like it can help. There are several ways to try this activity.
Do a standing full-body shake. Place your feet hip-width apart and start softly shaking your legs. ____18____ This way can help your whole body let go of tension.
Another method is the knee-bounce shake, which involves bending your knees slightly and gently bouncing up and down. When combined with allowing your arms to hang loose, it will be more effective. ____19____
You can also move the upper half of your body with an arm and shoulder shake. Allow your arms to shake loosely from your shoulders. This may help release stress in the upper back and neck.
Whether it’s through dancing or jumping around, this simple practice can help calm the mind and body. ____20____
A. The concept could go beyond the mind.
B. Plant your feet on the ground and shake it out.
C. Stress can cause tightness to get trapped in the body.
D. Science reveals why somatic shaking may be effective.
E. Allow the movement to make its way upwards to your shoulders.
F. Therefore, take one shake when you want to reconnect with yourself.
G. Benefits include relaxing the lower part of your body and your nervous system.

My younger sister Lily had always longed for a cat. Every birthday and every Spring Festival, she made the same wish. My parents, however, remained unconvinced, firmly believing that keeping a pet would be more trouble than pleasure, especially with two busy students in the family.
Everything changed unexpectedly one Saturday afternoon.
On my way home from school, I noticed a small gray cat sitting near the entrance of our apartment building. It wasn’t afraid at all. Instead, it followed me upstairs, slipped into our living room, and settled there as if it had already decided where it belonged. Lily let out a scream of excitement.
“She chose us!” Lily announced, her voice trembling with certainty.
My father immediately pointed to the cat hair gathering on the sofa, while my mother raised concerns about feeding schedules once exam pressure set in. After a long and cautious discussion, they finally agreed to keep the cat for one week — as a trial.
We named it “Cloud,” inspired by its soft fur. In the beginning, things went smoothly. Cloud spent most of the day sleeping and followed Lily from room to room, like a loyal shadow. But soon, problems appeared. Cloud would often knock over a flower pot, scratch the curtains, and jump onto the dining table.
Each small accident added to the growing unease. “This is exactly what we feared,”my father remarked. Lily tried to defend Cloud, promising to take full responsibility. I remained mostly silent, watching how quickly excitement gave way to tension.
On a cold evening, after Cloud accidentally spilled a cup of water onto my homework, I lost my temper and shouted. The room fell silent. Cloud jumped down at once and hid under the sofa, curling up into a ball and not taking a single step out. Lily looked up at me, tears welling in her eyes.
Later that night, I found her sitting on the floor, softly calling Cloud’s name. However, it refused to come out.
“If we send it away,” Lily asked in a low voice, “will it live a good life?”
Her question lingered in my mind long after she went to bed.
Early the next morning, we noticed Cloud fell sick and came down with a fever.

D 5. B 6. A 7. B

根据第二段“When I was a little girl, cooking wasn’t something I was encouraged to try on my own. Most meals were prepared by family members who made them seemingly effortlessly, which only made me feel more incapable. When I attempted to help, I was easily discouraged by the complexity of recipes and the number of things I had to handle all at once — shopping, timing, seasoning, and more.
根据第三段“As I grew older, that fear didn’t fade. I often chose to order food or rely on simple, premade items because the kitchen seemed like a minefield where one misstep could lead to disaster. (随着年龄的增长,那种恐惧并没有fade。我经常选择点外卖或依赖简单的预制食品,因为厨房就像一个雷区,一步走错就可能导致灾难)”可知,作者随着年龄增长,仍然害怕厨房,所以选择点外卖或依赖预制食品,因此,此处指作者童年时的那种对厨房的恐惧并没有消失,即fade意为“消失”,与disappear意思相近。故选B项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“Initially (起初), I overcooked vegetables, mixed ingredients incorrectly, and at times completely forgot to add key components (成分). (起初,我把蔬菜煮过头了,配料混合错了,有时甚至完全忘了添加关键配料)”可推知,作者最初的烹饪过程并不顺利,出现了蔬菜煮过头、食材搭配错误、忘记加关键配料等问题。故选A项。
通读全文,结合第一段“For many years, the kitchen was a place I was afraid of rather than enjoyed. Despite my love for food and the excitement of trying new flavors, I was often discouraged by the fear of failing or making mistakes. (多年来,厨房对我来说是一个让我害怕而不是享受的地方。尽管我喜欢食物,对尝试新口味感到兴奋,但我常常因为害怕失败或犯错而气馁)”和倒数第三段中“I decided that I had to face my fear head-on rather than avoid it. (我决定,我必须直面恐惧,而不是逃避它)”以及最后一段“As I gained hands-on experience, I started feeling more capable and was willing to experiment with new recipes and ingredients. Now, the kitchen has become a playground of discovery for me.

B 9. A 10. D 11. B

根据第二段中的“This physical change is like early domestication in pets, suggesting urban raccoons are becoming more comfortable and less fearful around people, adapting to our world.(这种生理变化类似于宠物早期被驯化的过程,这表明城市里的浣熊在人类身边变得愈发自在、愈发不惧人类,正逐步适应人类的生活环境。)”
根据第三段中的““Trash is really the kick-starter,” she said. “Wherever humans go, there’s trash — and animals love our trash.” This easy food source draws raccoons into human areas, increasing interaction. (她说:“垃圾确实是始作俑者。人类所到之处皆有垃圾,而动物们格外偏爱人类丢弃的垃圾。”这种易得的食物来源将浣熊吸引至人类活动区域,进而增加了二者之间的接触往来。)”可知,人类垃圾是浣熊靠近人类、开启物种之间互动的开端。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Raccoons less aggressive or afraid are more likely to find food, survive, and reproduce.(攻击性弱、胆子大的浣熊更容易获取食物、存活下来并繁衍后代。)”以及第五段中的“The study highlights that only animals with “dampened flight responses” — less likely to run away when frightened — thrive (繁荣生存) in urban settings (successfully grow, develop, and flourish in city environments). (这项研究强调,只有那些“逃跑反应减弱”的动物,也就是受到惊吓时不易逃窜的动物,才能在城市环境中顺利繁衍、蓬勃生存。)”可知,性情平和、胆子更大的特质帮助浣熊在城市立足。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“It reminds us that our daily lives and environments can lead to unexpected evolutionary changes in the animal kingdom.(这提醒着我们,人类的日常生活与居住环境会让动物界发生意料之外的进化改变。)”

A 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第四段“Philip Feldman at the University of Maryland says that giving AI models a robot body and exposing them to sensorimotor (感觉运动的) input would probably result in a jump in ability, but that we will have to be very careful about how this is done, given the risk of robots causing physical harm to people around them.(马里兰大学的菲利普・费尔德曼表示,为人工智能模型配备实体机器人躯体,并让其接收感觉运动信号输入,或许能使其能力实现质的飞跃;但考虑到机器人可能会对周边人群造成人身伤害,我们在实施这一做法时必须格外谨慎。)”
根据最后一段“One of the things they would learn is that you can bounce off (弹开) things, because they have little mass. Put such deep understanding that has to do with physical contact in a real robot with mass and you would have robots believing that they could just crash into each other at full speed.(它们会学到的一点是,自身能从物体上弹开,因为其质量极小。若将这种与物理接触相关的深度认知,植入具备实际质量的实体机器人中,这些机器人便会误以为,自己即便全速相撞也完全无碍。)”可知,费尔德曼主要担心机器人会因学习到的错误认知而误判自身的力量。故选C项。

Dear Jin,
How’s your English learning going? I’m sorry to hear about your dilemma when choosing between an electronic translation pen and a paper dictionary and I’d like to recommend the former to you.
Reasons are as follows. Firstly, it’s extremely time-saving. When you encounter unknown words while reading or listening, you can get accurate translations instantly by scanning the words. Secondly, it’s portable and multifunctional. You can carry it in your bag anywhere, and most pens offer extra features like pronunciation guides, example sentences and even offline use. Though paper dictionaries provide detailed explanations, they are heavy and less efficient.
Hope my suggestion is helpful. If you have further questions, feel free to ask me.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

It huddled weakly under the sofa, emitting faint whimpers that stirred our sympathy. Lily’s eyes reddened instantly; she knelt down, gently caressing Cloud’s cold fur and murmuring soothing words. My parents rushed to purchase pet medication, while I fetched a warm towel to wrap around its tiny frame. Throughout the day, we took turns attending to it — Lily fed it warm milk with patience, my father cleaned its litter box thoroughly, and my mother monitored its temperature at regular intervals. The awkward tension in the house gradually faded, giving way to a quiet sense of unity.
By the end of the week, our family had reached a decision. We would keep Cloud permanently. Those days of caring for the sick cat made us realize that pet ownership is not just about pleasure, but also about responsibility and mutual warmth. Cloud, now fully recovered, ran around the house cheerfully, leaping onto the sofa and curling up in Lily’s lap. My parents no longer complained about the trouble; instead, they often smiled as they watched Lily play with Cloud. I even found myself looking forward to coming home to its warm welcome. This little gray cat had not just chosen us, but also bound our family closer together.
