W: Great, and we should also make a PowerPoint to make the presentation more interesting.
M: Right. We should have small cards, too. I'm useless at remembering what to say without them.
W: Me too. Well, I'm quite happy to organize everything we've found out about clouds and make sure it fits into our presentation times.
M: Actually, I'd better do that. How about if you make the presentation slides?
W: OK.
M: Then I'll also look on the Internet for pictures of different types of clouds.
W: That'll be great. I'll prepare the cards so we don't forget what we're saying.
M: Sounds great. What section do you want to talk about?
W: I hate speaking in front of people so I'd prefer not to do the introduction.
M: I'll do that. If you don't want to talk much, then why don't you just do the middle bit about the medium-level clouds?
W: That's OK.

【答案】A、C、B、B
【解析】1. 听力原文:
And now for our main headlines on Southern Local News for today. First of all, the report about the government plans on developments around the village of Tartlesbury was published this morning. The new motorway will pass along the north side of the village. It will cross the River Teeme from the well-known beauty spot, Streeve Beach, to the north-east of the village. The motorway will cut the village off from the Streeve Beach, where many children play. But that is not the end of it. There are also plans to build a thousand houses on farmland west of the village. And on top of that is the plan to build a high-tech park for new technology companies. It will be built in the south of the village, where the old steel factory used to be. A new center with a swimming pool and a large supermarket are also planned next to the park. And, as has been expected, the plans have created quite a lot of interest. Not all people are for them. Mr. Khan, a local shopkeeper said, "Most of us in the village are absolutely concerned about what is being planned here. This is just a chance for some people to make money quickly. Of course, we welcome the jobs that the new technology park will bring, but we feel more worried that the large increase in housing and the planned motorway will destroy the character of the area." I think this is a debate that is going to run on for quite some time and we here on Local News will keep you informed.

Like most other parrots, parakeets(长尾鹦鹉)are known for having the ability to imitate the way humans speak. Now a new study has found that when parakeets make sounds, their brains work similarly to the way human brains function when we speak.
The study was led by Michael Long, a professor at New York University. Longˈs team focused on common parakeets. They recorded their brain activity as they made sounds, focusing on a part of the brain called the central nucleus of the anterior arcopallium (AAC), which is known for affecting vocal(发声的)muscles.
They found that certain brain cells became active when the birds made specific sounds. Some cells seemed to be involved in producing consonants, and others created vowels. Some showed activity when the birds made high-pitched(声调高的)sounds, while other cells lit up for low-pitched sounds. This simple system allows parakeets to combine different sounds to make complex calls. “What the parrot has presented is this beautiful, elegant solution to making vocal sounds,” Long told New Scientist.
In human brains, specific brain cell activity is associated with certain movements of the lips or tongue. This is the first time scientists have identified a similar language “map” in the brain of a non-human animal.
Longˈs team also studied zebra finches. In contrast to parakeets, the finchesˈ brains have complicated systems. But these can only allow them to make simple songs but not to mimic human speech.
Researching how language works in birdsˈ brains could help scientists better understand how it works in the human brain. This could lead to solutions to speech disability in humans.
24.How did the scientists study the parakeetsˈ brains?
A. By comparing them with humansˈ brains.
B. By teaching parakeets new sounds.
C. By recording parakeetsˈ brain activity.
D. By observing parakeetsˈ behavior.
25.What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The procedure of the research.
B. The use of sound in human speech.
C. Differences between parakeets and humans.
D. Parakeetsˈ brain system for sound production.
26.What does the underlined word “these” in paragraph 5 refer to?
A. Parakeets. B. Zebra finches.
C. Parakeetsˈ brain systems. D. Zebra finchesˈ brain systems.
27.What is the significance of the study by Longˈs team?
A. It contributes to the better protection of animals.
B. It may help us solve human speech problems.
C. It enables us to understand the natural world deeper.
D. It enriches our knowledge about languages in the world.
【答案】C、D、D、B

A French Sinologist(汉学家), wearing a customized tie with Chinese characters, gave a speech about a course on the Dongba script(东巴文)in the form of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOC).
The Dongba script, a pictographic(象形的)writing system of the Naxi ethnic minority group in Southwest Chinaˈs Yunnan Province, is one of the few pictographic scripts still in use today. There are about 1,400 characters in total.
In 2003, the Ancient Naxi Dongba Literature Manuscripts were added to the UNESCO Memory of the World Register. With a population of about 300,000, only over 400 individuals among the Naxi ethnic group are still able to recognize and use the Dongba script.
China has made significant efforts to preserve the Dongba script. Launched in 2023, the course aims to guide learners to understand the Dongba script and contributes to its protection. It has attracted more than 2,000 students from 80 countries and regions in the first-round enrollment.
More efforts have been made to change the situation. In 2024, an intelligent translation system for the Dongba script was jointly developed and launched by a group of universities and the local research institution. The system can help to recognize and translate the Dongba literature manuscripts in a simple way.
A professor at Nanjing Normal University said, “The preservation of our ethnic minority languages and cultural heritage wasnˈt systematic in the past. However, with the use of digital methods, the new guideline now helps protect the languages and pass them on.”

For years, media headlines have described a serious situation regarding bee populations. They frequently warn that a global decline in bee species is just around the corner. But is it as straightforward as it appears? In fact, bee numbers tell a tale of two trends.
In the United States, bee populations have encountered significant obstacles in recent decades. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), since the 1960s the number of honeybee colonies in the United States has dropped significantly from around 5.5 million to approximately 2.5 million. In contrast to the declines observed in the West, some Asian countries have experienced stable or even growing bee populations. Several factors contribute to this positive trend: the diverse natural landscape, the mild climate, and the expansion of commercial beekeeping. For instance, China—the worldˈs largest honey producer—has significantly expanded its managed honeybee populations to meet growing global demand, which helps make up for the declines in wild bee populations.
The idea of a global bee population collapse may not fully reflect the complexity of the situation. While some regions are experiencing alarming losses, others are seeing increases, demonstrating that active and effective measures can lead to positive outcomes. Regions facing declines can stabilize and even restore their bee populations by carrying out stronger conservation policies and sustainable farming practices. Key measures include the use of health-improving treatments to boost beesˈ immunity against pests and diseases, and the protection of diverse floral habitats to insure a continuous and abundant food supply throughout the year. Meanwhile, countries experiencing bee population growth must remain alert to emerging threats to safeguard their long-term ecological progress and stability.
Bees play a vital role in global food security and biodiversity. Their future depends on our ability to adapt, innovate, and protect their habitats. Instead of focusing only on declines, we should also learn from and follow the success stories of growing bee populations around the world.
32.What is the authorˈs attitude toward media reports on bee populations?
A. Fully supportive. B. Cautiously balanced.
C. Highly defensive. D. Openly dismissive.
33.What has led to the growth of bee populations in some Asian countries?
A. The diversity and growing number of wild bee populations.
B. The development of new technology in the beekeeping industry.
C. The favorable environment and the growing beekeeping industry.
D. The rising global demand for wild bee honey and its by-products.
34.What can be inferred from the efforts to address bee population decline?
A. Current measures have a limited impact.
B. Scientific creativity plays a leading role.
C. Economic growth worsens ecological problems.
D. Targeted actions help turn around the negative trend.
35.What is the authorˈs main purpose in writing the text?
A. To give a detailed report on changes in bee populations.
B. To raise a warning about the collapse of bee populations.
C. To clarify trends in bee populations and suggest solutions.
D. To outline the problems in beekeeping and analyze the causes.
【答案】B、C、D、C

Writing flow refers to the smooth and logical progression of ideas within a piece of writing. (36) Poor writing flow can confuse readers and make your message unclear. One useful technique to improve your writing flow is maintaining consistency(一致性).
One key element of maintaining consistency is tense consistency. Decide whether youˈre writing in the past, present, or future tense. (37) Unnecessary changes in tense can make your writing seem unclear. For example, avoid sentences that jump between “He walked to the store” and “He is buying milk”.
(38) Choose your pronouns carefully. Are you writing in the first person (“I” or “we”), the second person (“you”), or the third person (“he”, “she”, “it” or “they”)? Once youˈve made your choice, stick with it. Changing pronouns can create confusion. If you are writing about a particular person, make sure to use the same pronouns to refer to them.
Be mindful of perspective(视角)changes, especially in creative writing. If you start a scene from one characterˈs perspective, avoid suddenly jumping into another characterˈs thoughts and feelings without a clear transition(过渡). Sudden changes can mislead the reader and weaken the impact of your story. (39)
In summary, consistency is achieved through careful attention to tense and pronoun usage, and by avoiding sudden and confusing changes in the perspective. (40) In this way, you can make the reading experience enjoyable and help the audience grasp the intended message more easily.
A.It helps guide the reader effortlessly.
B.Similarly, pay close attention to pronoun consistency.
C.Stick to it unless thereˈs a reasonable reason to change.
D.Effective writing isnˈt just about getting your ideas down.
E.If a change is necessary, use specific techniques to signal the change.
F.Mastering these skills can help insure your writing is clear and engaging.
G.Improving your writing flow is not a one-time achievement but a journey.

28.Which number best shows the urgent situation of the Dongba script?
A. 80. B. 400. C. 1,400. D. 300,000.
29.What is the purpose of the course on the Dongba script?
A. To provide insights into the local culture.
B. To support the preservation of the language.
C. To help teachers give lessons on the language.
D. To share the latest findings about the language.
30.What does the professor think of the use of digital methods in language protection?
A. It is only suitable for some languages.
B. It shouldnˈt replace the traditional way.
C. It can reduce the cost of language protection.
D. It helps protect languages in a well-organized way.
31.What does this text mainly talk about?
A. The present situation of the Dongba script.
B. An international platform for the Dongba script.
C. The use of technology in studying the Dongba script.
D. Joint efforts made to protect the Dongba script.
D
三、阅读七选五:本大题共5小题,共12.5分。

Emily stared through the window and watched a white cloud pass over the woods across from the school. A bird floated through the air, wings stretched. It must be wonderful to be a bird, she thought. Total freedom. No math class to sit in. Soon, she would be out of school for the summer and her days would be spent on horseback. She thought of her horse, Star. Sheˈd have to brush him before riding him this afternoon. Somewhere, someone was saying her name, but it seemed so far away.
“Emily. Emily!” Emily jumped. She turned back toward the class to find everyone laughing. “Emily, youˈre such a smart girl but you just donˈt apply yourself. Youˈre always daydreaming.” Mrs. Smith turned to others, “Class, now clear your desks. Our guest is here. Welcome Doctor Landon. He is a painter and he came here today as part of our continued Career Explorations program.”
“I love horses,” Doctor Landon said. Horse. Was Doctor Landon talking about horses? She paid attention as he spoke. “School education matters a lot. The knowledge I got from math and science classes enables me to paint horses as they are in their natural setting. I visit different stables(养马场). Itˈs a lot of work, but I love it.”
