Many people love traveling to different countries, but if you plan to go abroad, you should know how to behave in different situations around the world.
①Most travelers enjoy meeting new people, but sometimes you can be rude without knowing the customs when people first meet. In Russia, you should never shake hands in a doorway. In India, they have a special greeting. They press their palms together, bow, and say, “Namaste.”
②In most countries in Europe, people expect a lot of eye contact when you talk to them, but in many Asian countries, a lot of eye contact seems unfriendly. And in China, people usually stand quite close to each other when they talk, but in countries like the USA you need to give people more personal space.
③When in India, remember to eat with your right hand. Avoid leaving empty bottles on the dinner table in Russia — that’s too bad.
④If you visit an Arab family’s home, don’t admire (夸赞) valuable things too much because your host will feel he should give them to you as presents.
With so much to think about, it’s not surprising that many people prefer going on holiday in their own countries, or you might just decide to stay at home! But anyway, wherever you go, please remember, you should respect the local customs and try to get used to the life there.

①One of the world’s most dangerous sports is mountain climbing, and one of the most popular places for this is the Himalayas. The Himalayas run along the southwestern part of China. Of all the mountains, Qomolangma rises the highest and is the most famous. It is 8,848.86 meters high and is very dangerous to climb. Thick clouds cover the top and snow can fall very hard. Even more serious difficulties include freezing weather conditions and heavy storms. It is also very hard to take in air as you get near the top.
②The first people to reach the top were Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary on May 29, 1953. After a long and difficult climb, troubled by heavy snow, freezing wind and the lack of oxygen (缺氧), they finally reached the top. They could only spend about fifteen minutes on the summit before they had to come down. The first Chinese team did so in 1960, while the first woman to succeed was Junko Tabei from Japan in 1975.
③Why do so many climbers risk their lives? One of the main reasons is that people want to challenge themselves in the face of difficulties. The spirit of these climbers shows us that we should never give up trying to achieve our dreams. It also shows that humans can sometimes be stronger than the forces of nature.
9.According to the passage, when climbing Mount Qomolangma, what difficulties may climbers meet?
A.Thin clouds and heavy storms. B.Freezing weather and thick clouds.
C.Heavy storms and lack of water. D.Lack of water and thin clouds.

D.①-Spirit of climbers; ②-Facts and dangers; ③-Achievements of climbers
12.What does the spirit of climbers tell us?
A.Never give up. B.All roads lead to Rome.
C.The essence of life is to serve others. D.Many hands make light work.
D
Recently, I asked a seeing friend who had just walked in the woods what she had noticed. “Nothing special,” she replied.
How was it possible, I asked myself, to walk through the woods and see nothing special? I who cannot see find hundreds of things to interest me only through touch. If I can get so much happiness from touch, how much more beauty must be found by sight? And I have imagined what I should most like to see if I were given the use of my eyes for just three days.
On the first day, I should want to see the people who read books to me. In the afternoon, I should take a walk in the woods. That night, I should not be able to sleep.
On my second day, I should go to the museums to see man’s progress. I should try to explore the spirit of a man through his art. In the evening, I should spend at the movies.
The following day, I should spend in the world of common people going about the business of life.
I who am blind can give one suggestion to those who see: Use your eyes, as if tomorrow you would be blind. The same is true of other senses. Hear the songs of birds, as if you would be deaf tomorrow. Smell the flowers, as if tomorrow you could never smell again...But of all the senses, I’m sure that sight must be the most pleasant.
—Adapted from Three Days to See
13.What makes the writer start imagining the three days?
A.Seeing natural beauty. B.Walking in the woods.

C.Succeed in business on the third day. D.Read books to people on the first day.
15.What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A.A way of living a happy life. B.A description of different senses.
C.Encouragement to the blind people. D.Advice to healthy people.
16.Which of the following sayings may the writer agree with?
A.All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.
B.Time is what we want most, but what we use worst.
C.Live every moment and be thankful for what you have.

The Secret in the Soil
Lily, a 14-year-old girl, thought she was bad at everything until she found an old seed (种子) bag in her grandmother’s garden. “Why not try growing plants?” she thought.
At first, her plants died quickly. She watered them too much, and her small balcony got little sunlight. Feeling sad, Lily almost gave up until her science teacher Ms Chen noticed her hard work. “Plants need time and care, not just water, ” Ms Chen said gently. She taught Lily to write in a notebook every week: “Water on Tuesday. Check leaves for bugs (虫子). Give plant food once a month. ”
Lily’s balcony slowly changed into a green corner. She grew tall sunflowers that could turn to face the sun. Her mint (薄荷) plants smelled so fresh, she sometimes sniffed (闻) them for fun. In her notebook, she drew pictures and wrote simple notes: “Day 30: My bean plant is as tall as my water bottle! It climbed the stick I tied there.”
One rainy afternoon, her first tomato turned bright red. When she shared it with her family at dinner, Lily smiled. “Plants grow slowly— they don’t try to hurry,” she told herself. “Maybe I don’t need to be perfect all the time, either.” Now when friends say, “You are more confident after you begin gardening.” Lily answers, “Yes! I have also learned a lot from my new hobby. It has taught me to wait and watch. Sometimes it’s okay if things take time.”

One possible version:
Being a Volunteer Is Great
It's great to be a volunteer and help others. My class went to the old people's home and cared for the old last Sunday. As soon as we got there, we started to help with some things. First, we cleaned the old people's rooms and did some washing. Then, some of us read the newspapers to the old people, and others sang songs to cheer them up. After that, we helped repair some broken things. Real happiness comes from helping others. When I saw the old people laugh happily, I had a strong feeling of satisfaction.
We hope our volunteer work can make a difference to more people's life in the future.
