As my kids and I walked around a community garden the other week,I asked them what veggies they could
identify. We were in Alberta, where many plants were still in their early stages of growth-I wasn't optimistic
about what the kids would be able to name by leaves alone. However, they called out,"Tomatoes!Potatoes!
Carrots!"Their answers made me even pronder than if they'd just expiamed some knowiedge of physics.Ali the

time we've spent in our home garden is actually sinking in.
Although I've been gardening for years, this year feels different.Spending time in the garden has helped me
with my own well-being at a trying time, and it has given me a new way to connect with my kids when I m
running out of steam
My garden is wild,full of life,and a bit messy.Honestly,the same goes for my kids-and I don't expect
perfection from them either.Untess you're retying on your produce for money or food,it's a good idea to have
your expectations for gardening as low as possible. My kids say they"love the garden"but"don't like gardening
-I think they mean they don't like the chores. If I have some weeding or potting (to do,I'it aiso have
some entertainment for them, which can be as simple as“find these 10 rocks'”or“wet this plot(小块土地)wuth
your water gun
Involving the kids in every stage of the process can be powerful and fun, even if what you have are just a
few contamers on a baicony."Gardening allows us to spend free, unscheaured outdoor time with our kids."writes
joumalist and author Shannon Brescner Shea in her book Growing Sustamable Together."Let your kids lead the
way Invite them to participate in every step, from planting to harvesting, but don't force it"
One of the best things about gardens is tne food, but frankly,my kids are not going to be pushing greens into
tneir mouths any time soon.Finaing uses ror garden goods that go beyond food production can spark interest and
supply you with some unexpectedly good results.
24.What made tre author reel proud in the community garden?
A.Rer kids mastered physics knowledge well.
B.Her kids grew various veggies in the garden.
C.Her kids explained plants groth stages clearly.
D.Her kids could recognize vegetables by leaves.
25.What does the author do to draw kids'attention to gardening?
S
A.By inctuding fun acuvities.
B.By rewarding them in the end
C.By letting them take-short rests.
D By offering regular encouragement.
26.What can we infer from Shannon Brescher Shea's words?
A.Outdoor activities are much better than indoos ones.
B.Gardening helps kids improve their physical health.
C.Parents should respect kids'willingness in gardening.
D KIds should be pressed by parents to experience gardgaing.
27.What is probably the best titke of the passage
A.Rules tor a Picture-perfect Yard
B.Ways to Harvest Garden-fresh Produce
C.Identifying Vegetables by Leaves
D.Connecting with Kids Through Gardening
Have you ever questioned why someone is being unusually kind? You're not alone. We often unconsciously
look for nidden motives (behind generous acts,a reaction psychologists call "do-gooder derogation".This
means we may judge a seemingly selfless person more harshly (than someone who is openly
self-interested
A classic experiment, the"public goods game"illustrates this.Participants are given money and can choose
to contribute to a shared pot, which grows and is later divided equally. While contributing increases the group's
total gain, selfish individuals can contribute little and still benefit.Surprisingly, the most generous contributors in
this game are often criticized as much as the seltish"free riders".
Psychologist Nichola Raihani suggests we are all playing a social "status game".We are doubtful of those
who might be using kindness to build their reputation().This doubt is at the heart of the"tainted altruism
effect".Imagine a friend,Andy, volunteers at a homeless shelter. If we discover his true motive is to date the
shetter manager,we judge him more sharply than if he took a coffee shop job for the same reason. The charitable
context makes the hidden motive seem worse.
英语试题第4页(共8页)
Researcher Sebastian Hafenbradl explored this further. His studies confirmed that we iudge people like
Andy more harshly when they seek social rewards from a good deed.Interestingly, the judgment softens if the
person is honest about their mouive betorehand,as this removes the"unearned social reward"of appearing purely
altruistic ()Furthermore,people who do good merely to feel good about themselves are judged less
harshly than those seeking to strengthen their reputation. Both acts contain self-interest,but seeking publie
approval is seen as more disnonest.
So,is any act truly selfless?Perhaps not.But if the result is more kindness in the world, maybe we can
forgive a little mixed motivation. We tend to judge people by their inner intentions, ignoring that few decisions
come from pure selflessness.Even small self-concerns do not rid the warmth one brings. As long as good deeds
benefit others, minor selfish thoughts deserve understanding rather than blame.
28.Wnat is me purpose of mentioning the "public goods game"in Paragraph 2?
A.To give a definition of a social theory.
To explain the rules of a well-known garue.
t:.To introduce a popular economic experiment.
D.Te give an example of a psychological finding.
29.Which of the following indicates the "tainted altruism effect"?
A.An athlete's fair win brings publianonor.
B.A firm's charity donation aims at a tax cut
C.A student's hard work targets a scholarship.
D.A volunteer's sharing seeks to inspire others.
30.What did Scbastian Hafenbradl's studies find?
A.Seeking public approval shows the least honesty.
B.Hiding selfish motives results in gentler criticism.
C.Admitting selfish motives in advance reduces blame.
D.Acting for self-satisfaction draws the strongest criticism.
31.What is the author's attitude towards.mixed-motive kindness?
A.Acceptable.B.Uncaring.
C.Confused.
D.Negative.

Did you know that the sun has weather? The sun's weather;ealled space weather, can affect the entire solar
system. The sun is continuously blowing a stream of tiny particles (i all directions, called the solar wind,
which is mostly made up of hydrogen ()It blows at hunaretis of kuometres per second and has been blowing
onto the Earth for billions of vears.
But why hasn't it crashed into us?Actually, the Earth has a.magnetic field().which causes the planet to
act like a giant magnet in space and protects the Earth from the solar wind.fhe Earth's magnetic field is what
causes a compass to work. The magnenc field can't be seen, but we can measure it with magnets and other
scientific instruments.
The particles that make up the solar wind are made to change direction by the Earth's magnetic ficld,so they
mostly pass around the Earth without crashing into us.But it's not an Immacuiate protection-because of the
shape of the Earth's magnetic field, close to the North and South Poles,a little bit of the solar wind can
sometimes get through and crash directly into the atmosphere.
This crash happens between very tny particles at an incredible speed.Therefore.instead of throwing off
smuller preces or exploding, the particles give off light, causing poiar lights. The eolors of the light tell us wha
type of atmospheric particle is being crashed into by the solar wmd.For example, red and green are from oxygen.
What the polar lights, also known as auroras, exactiy look like depends on the state of the Earth's magnetic
field and the atmosphere:but more direetly depends on spaceWeatheg:Sometimes the sun produces a storm,

32.(What is mentioned about the magneuc field?
A.It can be measured by a compass.
B.It saves the Earth from external hits.
C.It attracts the solar wind to the Earth.
D.It can be seen with scientific instruments.
33.What does the underlined word"mmaculate in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Impressive.B.Comnmon.
C.Perfect.
D.Changeable.
34 What determines the color ofan aurora according to the passage?
A.How fast the soiar wind is moving.
B.Which part of the world the aurora appears in.
C.How strong the Earth's magnetic field is at the tinye.
D.Which atmospheric particle is struck by the solar wind.
35 What ean we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Powerful storms happen frequently on the sun.
B.Space weather may widen the Earth's magnetic field.
C.Stronger space weather can expand auroras'viewing area.
D.Auroras'appearance rekes mostlv on the Earth's atmosphere.

Hotels do not price rooms in the same way a shop prices a lamp or a suitcase.30The same room
the same building can be worth very different amounts depending on the day, season, and locai demand.A
beachfront hotel m summer is operating differently from the same room during a quieter month.Even weekends
and weekdays can produce different patterns, depending on the type ot traveller the hotel attracts.
Then what actually causes prices to move?Several factors shape hotel room rates, sometimes all at once.
Denrard is the obvious one.Booking window-also matters. Some travelers book months in advance, while others
leave it until the last minute.37If rooms are selling earlier than usual, rates may increase sooner. If there
is unexpected availability croser to arrival, prices may be adjusted again.Competition plays a role too.38
If similar nearby hotels are filling up,or charging more, that affects how a hotel positions its own rates.
Nowadavs, many hotels rely on management software to make pricing more responsive.Rather than
guessing or checking rates occasionally, fhese tools help hotels analyse booking trends, monitor market signals,
and update pricing in line with real demand.39 means notels are using better information to make
better decisions.Instead of relying on instinct (alone, they can react to changes in occupancy.pace, and
market conditions more confidently.
Understanding how hotel pricing works can make booking decisions feel less frustrating.Travelling outside
peak periods, avoiding major local event dates,er booking earlier can all help.It also helps to compare dates

B.Hotels track these patterns closely.
C.A room's value depends heavily on timing.

Aveline walked in nervously, wondering if she'd done something wrong. She stood there, head lowered, afraid to
meet Soren's eyes.Soren smiled softly and motioned for her to sit down."I saw your post last night,"he said gently,
his voice carrying none of its usual seriousness.Aveline iooked up in surprise-she had never imagined her quiet
boss would notice such a small thing."I know how mueh that motoreycle means to you, especially with your
mother's situation,"he continued. Before she could respond,he reached into his drawer and pulled out a set of
brand-new keys, sliding them across the desk toward her."These are for you."
Aveline held the keys to the new motorcycle in surprise. She stared at them, her mind blank for a moment."But...
why would you do this for me?"she finally whispered, her voice trembling as tears blurred her vision.Soren leaned
back and said softly,"I've watched you work hard every single day since you arrived. When I read your post,I knew
I couldn't just stand by."He paused, and then added,"A boss should take care of his staff like family."Aveline could
barely speak, thanking him over and over again, promising to repay his kindness with even harder work. That
evening,as she rode the new motorcycle home through the familiar streets nf Oakland, the cool wind brushed against
her face and a warmth spread through her chest. She understood now that kindness often appears in the most
unexpected places, quiefly reminding us that we are never truly afone.
