We desperately need clean hydrogen for industries that cannot run on renewable electricity. It might be possible to generate vast amounts from deep rocks while locking away CO₂. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have shown this works in lab studies. “We hope to generate hydrogen economically while locking away CO₂,” says Olga Gleinetser.
Hydrogen burns clean, so it could help make fertiliser and steel-making cleaner. However, almost all hydrogen is now made from fossil fuels, and green production requires huge amounts of renewable energy like wind or solar power, which is too costly. Meanwhile, natural hydrogen, though cheap and clean, is limited in scale and production rates. This has led to growing interest in stimulated hydrogen production — actively generating hydrogen from rocks.
One method is pumping water underground. Water reacts with iron-rich rocks via serpentinisation (蛇纹石化), which is a source of a lot of natural hydrogen. Gleinetser realized that adding CO₂ to the water makes it react with rocks and get locked away as carbonates (碳酸盐). A company called Carbfix is already turning CO₂ into minerals this way in Iceland.
In lab tests, iron-rich volcanic rock was first heated to 90°C in sealed containers under high pressure, and then CO₂-rich water was added. Compared with water added with other gases such as argon (氩气), the CO₂-rich water released more hydrogen, probably because carbonic acid broke down rock and allowed more reaction.
The researchers were able to release about 0.5% of the hydrogen which was theoretically possible to obtain from reacting water with the rock. But they think 1% is needed for workability. A promising way is to go deeper underground, where higher temperatures enhance serpentinisation.
Globally, there are huge volumes of iron-rich rock, which could yield far more hydrogen than the 100 million tonnes currently produced. “There is growing interest in combining stimulated hydrogen production with CO₂ mineralisation,” says Alaksiei Patapcia at the University of Oxford. “Many groups and start-ups are exploring this concept.”

In fact, the dominant view has been that Mn weakens it. “Mn-based passivation is a discovery against common sense, which cannot be explained by current knowledge in corrosion science. However, when numerous results were presented, we were convinced,” said Dr. Kaiping Yu from the team.
Although the SS-H2 study was published in 2023, its core problem has only become more relevant. The field is still searching for materials that can survive the punishing mix of saltwater chemistry and industrial operating demands. SS-H2 stands out because it attacks the problem not only with a coating, but with a new design strategy that changes how stainless steel protects itself.
SS-H2 is not yet a plug and play solution for the hydrogen economy. Turning experimental materials into real electrolyzer products still involves difficult engineering work. We desperately need clean hydrogen for industries that cannot run on renewable electricity. It might be possible to generate vast amounts from deep rocks while locking away CO₂. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have shown this works in lab studies. “We hope to generate hydrogen economically while locking away CO₂,” says Olga Gleinetser.
Hydrogen burns clean, so it could help make fertiliser and steel-making cleaner. However, almost all hydrogen is now made from fossil fuels, and green production requires huge amounts of renewable energy like wind or solar power, which is too costly. Meanwhile, natural hydrogen, though cheap and clean, is limited in scale and production rates. This has led to growing interest in stimulated hydrogen production — actively generating hydrogen from rocks.
One method is pumping water underground. Water reacts with iron-rich rocks via serpentinisation (蛇纹石化), which is a source of a lot of natural hydrogen. Gleinetser realized that adding CO₂ to the water makes it react with rocks and get locked away as carbonates (碳酸盐). A company called Carbfix is already turning CO₂ into minerals this way in Iceland.
In lab tests, iron-rich volcanic rock was first heated to 90°C in sealed containers under high pressure, and then CO₂-rich water was added. Compared with water added with other gases such as argon (氩气), the CO₂-rich water released more hydrogen, probably because carbonic acid broke down rock and allowed more reaction.
The researchers were able to release about 0.5% of the hydrogen which was theoretically possible to obtain from reacting water with the rock. But they think 1% is needed for workability. A promising way is to go deeper underground, where higher temperatures enhance serpentinisation.
Globally, there are huge volumes of iron-rich rock, which could yield far more hydrogen than the 100 million tonnes currently produced. “There is growing interest in combining stimulated hydrogen production with CO₂ mineralisation,” says Alaksiei Patapcia at the University of Oxford. “Many groups and start-ups are exploring this concept.”
