With the seasons changing, now is the perfect time to start planning summer experiences. We’ve put together a list of the best ones to visit across the UK.
Grosvenor Park, Chester
Every summer, Storyhouse Theatre packs up their items and builds an entire amphitheatre (圆形剧场) in Grosvenor Park. This year’s programme sees an eclectic trio: The Gangs of New York, The Importance of Being Earnest and The Wizard of Oz. I’m most excited by the first. I don’t think this story has ever been staged before and it seems like a wild pick for a summer outdoor show.
Minack Theatre, Cornwall
Built into a cliff face in Porthcurno, you hardly need an excuse to visit this theatre. Seeing anything at all, backgrounded by the azure Cornish sea, will be an unforgettable experience. This year sees touring productions of Little Shop of Horrors, and the less-known works of Shakespeare.
Pitlochry Festival Theatre, Highland Perthshire
Throughout most of the year, the Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s indoor concert hall and studio serve as their regular performance spaces. But this summer, you can see equally lavish productions at the amphitheatre, located in the woods and overlooking Ben Vrackie mountain. This year they’ll be staging Dido and Aeneas.
Shakespeare in the Squares, London
Is there anything more luxuriously summery than lazing down to your local square for a bit of Shakespeare and a picnic? These guys do what they say on the tin, travelling across the squares of London with a new Shakespeare production every year. This year will be All’s Well That Ends Well.
21. Which play fascinates the author most?
A. The Wizard of Oz. B. Little Shop of Horrors.
C. The Gangs of New York. D. The Importance of Being Earnest.
22. Where can you enjoy a play in the Pitlochry Festival Theatre this summer?
A. On the cliff. B. In the woods.
C. On city squares. D. At a concert hall.
23. What is a proper choice for a Shakespeare fan?
A. Minack Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.
B. Grosvenor Park and Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
C. Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Minack Theatre.
D. Pitlochry Festival Theatre and Shakespeare in the Squares.

Basic grooming (仪容) can be a challenge during a long hospital stay, damaging patients’ moods and mental health. A group of medical students is on a mission to change that through a program called Bergen Barbers (理发师). Launched in 2021 by Vaishali Ravikumar, a Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) student, the program provides free haircutting and similar grooming services for hospitalized patients.
Ravikumar came up with the idea as a third-year student while taking care of a patient. “A patient who had been hospitalized for many days became so depressed (抑郁的) that he almost decided to leave the hospital, though the doctors didn’t want him to,” she recalled. After gathering some supplies, Ravikumar gave the patient a haircut. “We talked and laughed, and I learned a lot about him. When I finished, he was in much better spirits and trusted his healthcare team more than before.”
Inspired to extend the services to other patients, Ravikumar gathered several NJMS student volunteers, and Bergen Barbers was born. The students had no haircutting experience. They learned some basic skills by watching online videos. This year, Bergen Barbers added about 60 new medical student volunteers and introduced a more formal training process.
“They may be going through the toughest time,” said Hetal Lad, one of the volunteers. “In that moment, seeing somebody who’s outside their healthcare team is really nice, as they can express things they don’t feel they can say to their providers.” So far, Bergen Barbers has received only positive comments from patients. “We haven’t had a single bad experience,” said Shivani Srivastava, a current volunteer. “They’re always appreciative that we came by and gave them what they wanted.”
While the patients enjoy the results of the grooming services, the medical students are also getting the rewards. The services allow them to work early with patients.
24. What can we know about the program Bergen Barbers?
A. It received some negative feedback from patients.
B. It is mainly for patients with mental health issues.
C. It was launched in 2021 and provided a paid service.
D. It offers free grooming services to hospitalized patients.
25. How did Ravikumar come up with the idea of Bergen Barbers?
A. She was inspired by other similar programs.
B. She was encouraged by her medical teacher.
C. She wanted to increase her working experience.
D. She got the idea when caring for a depressed patient.
26. Which words can best describe Ravikumar?
A. Caring and creative. B. Responsible and skilled.
C. Determined and brave. D. Generous and hardworking.
27. What is patients’ attitude to volunteers’ service?
A. Thankful. B. Doubtful. C. Dissatisfied. D. Mixed.

A team from Newcastle University and Northumbria University in the UK found something special. Fungi (真菌) grow thin thread-like roots. These threads can be used as a wearable material enabling to repair itself.
The scientists did experiments with ganoderma lucidum. The fungus produces lots of thin branching threads. These threads interweave into a structure called a mycelium (菌丝体), which looks like a soft sheet. After further improvement, this fungal sheet can serve as a replacement for leather, meeting both eco-friendly standards and fashion industry demands.
“Our findings show that mycelium can live in dry and hard environments, and they can self-repair with little intervention after a 48-hour recovery period.” the researchers stated in their published paper. But the process used to produce this material will destroy fungal spores (孢子) that help fungi renew itself.
A new approach involving a mix of mycelia, proteins and other nutrients in a liquid encourages the growth of a skin sheet. Right now the sheet is too thin to make a jacket. But scientists believe they can make it stronger later, possibly by putting many layers together or plasticizing the sheets in glycerol. Importantly, the new production process didn’t kill off the fungal spores. Lab tests on the material show that it was able to replace holes made in it. The material is as strong as before, though it is still possible to see the holes.
“Due to their functional properties, the ability of this mycelium material to heal micro and macro damages opens interesting future prospects for product applications in leather-goods replacements like furniture and fashion wear,” the researchers explained.
There’s a long way to go here before you can wear clothes made out of fungi. The growth and self-repair cycles take several days to complete at the moment.
28. What did the research team discover in their tests?
A. Fungus killing off itself. B. Replacement to fungal spore.
C. Thread shaped like root. D. Material with self-repairing function.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The recovery period of fungal spores.
B. Threat of mycelium materials’ existence.
C. Imperfection in renewing mycelium materials.
D. The method of intervening organisms’ self-repair.
30. What can we learn about the new approach?
A. It speeds up the creation of mycelia. B. It keeps fungal spores from being killed.
C. It makes the holes in materials unseen. D. It combines the liquid with layers of skin.
31. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To advertise a new fashion industry.
B. To introduce a newly-developed fungal material.
C. To encourage scientists to develop new material.
D. To compare two production methods of mycelium.

Nowadays, technologies like drones (无人机) and robotic weeders could benefit agriculture by increasing food production while reducing environmental harm. However, there still exist some gaps in farming research. Researchers from PhenoRob at the University of Bonn have recently stated that the gaps should be filled.
To achieve that, the researchers from PhenoRob stress the importance of interdisciplinary (跨学科的) teamwork worldwide. For example, field-scanning drones with high-resolution cameras can detect plant diseases and assess plant health and productivity. While the collected data is growing rapidly, it still needs to be integrated (整合) with global data on weather conditions, soil types and farming methods.
Researchers also highlight the importance of tracking the smart technologies used on farms globally. In this way, researchers try to identify barriers to the adoption of technologies and approaches to encouraging their uptake. For example, some incentives such as funding assistance and land use discounts will help farmers overcome initial cost barriers, enabling investment in more efficient and sustainable farming practices to improve productivity and protect the environment. Such incentives are important for stimulating the use of smart technologies like automated irrigation systems or AI-driven crop monitoring.
Some technologies have already proven effective in improving sustainability. For example, robotic weeders can remove weeds without harming surrounding crops, which reduces the need for chemical herbicides and helps keep the soil healthy. At PhenoRob, researchers are integrating data into monitoring nitrogen levels. This data is used to create models that determine the ideal nitrogen amounts for different conditions, decreasing waste and minimizing environmental harm. As agriculture contributes significantly to global greenhouse gas release, researchers believe these technologies will play a great role in reducing some of the damage caused by traditional farming practices.
32. How will the gaps in farming be filled according to the researchers?
A. By gathering region-specific data.
B. By applying advanced camera systems.
C. By raising ecological plant productivity.
D. By improving global interdisciplinary teamwork.
33. What does the author think of the drone-collected agricultural data?
A. Insufficient. B. Detailed. C. Unrelated. D. Complete.
34. What does the underlined word “incentives” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Goods discounts. B. Encouraging rewards.
C. Technology benefits. D. Traditional solutions.
35. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Robotic Application: Novel and Effective.
B. Worldwide Teamwork: Efficient and Diverse.
C. Smart Farming: Integration and Sustainability.
D. Modern Technology: Change and Convenience.

Jean set off for a mountain trip in the Sierra Nevada, a famous mountainous area in California. She had a deep love for outdoor adventures (冒险) and was always prepared for her trips. She had taken many wild mountain trips there before, so she was quite familiar with the local terrain (地形) and road conditions. However, right after she climbed up to a mountain top, a sudden terrible storm arrived without any warning. It began to snow heavily at once, and very soon, she found herself trapped in the middle of a violent snowstorm.
Standing at the highest point for miles around, Jean was at great risk of being hit by lightning. She gave up the original plan of going back along the fixed trail (小径) and chose to climb down the steep and icy mountain slope carefully, believing in her climbing experience and skills.
Unluckily, during one difficult part on the way, Jean suddenly slipped and fell more than 100 feet down the rocky mountain. She was lucky enough to stay alive after the fall, but she suffered serious injuries, with many broken bones and terrible body pain.
Worse still, because of the extreme weather, there was no signal on her mobile phone, which made it totally impossible for her to call anyone for help. Jean had no choice but to walk slowly through deep snow all the way back to the starting trailhead. Throughout the journey back, Jean suffered continuously from great pain. When she finally walked with difficulty into a parking lot, Jean immediately fell down to the ground. It had been exactly one day since she fell down from the mountain. Her clothes were all covered with blood, and she was too tired to hold on, nearly passing out on the spot.
Just then, a car pulled in. A man was driving, with his wife in the passenger seat.

W: About 20 in total, but I expect maybe 12 to join for both parts. I’ve already booked tables at her favorite restaurant.
M: Great idea. When will the party start?
W: I booked the tables for 5:00 p.m. We will eat there until the singing room is ready at 7:00 p.m. I got a good deal on it for three hours!
M: What a pity! I can’t join the dinner, because my grandparents are coming over to my place for a family meal. But they’ll leave early, so I’ll meet you in the singing room. Would it help if I could bring some decorations? Do you need help with organizing or anything?
W: I’ll add you to the group chat. You can see all the plans there!
M: OK.

C

Seeing Jean’s condition, the man jumped out to help. Shocked by her terrible state, the couple didn’t hesitate to offer assistance. They gently lifted Jean up and laid her on the back seat of the car, covering her with a warm blanket to keep her from freezing in the cold weather. The man drove at top speed towards the nearest hospital while his wife comforted Jean softly, trying to keep her awake. Thanks to their timely rescue, Jean was sent to the emergency room and received professional treatment immediately.
As soon as Jean left the hospital, she managed to get the couple’s address. She prepared a delicate thank-you gift and paid a visit to them sincerely. Jean expressed her heartfelt gratitude repeatedly, saying that she could never have survived the terrible accident without their selfless help. The couple smiled and told her that it was just what anyone would do. This unforgettable experience not only saved Jean’s life, but also made her believe deeply in the warmth and kindness of strangers.
