Against the backdrop of a growing water crisis in India, an ancient underground, labyrinth-like (迷宫样的) structure is emerging as one solution to boosting its shrinking reserves — stepwells. The complex, terraced (梯田状的) water storage was once the lifeblood of Indian communities — developed centuries ago to store and access water for drinking, agriculture and industry, and it also functioned as a local gathering spot.
Today, many of these architectural wonders have been damaged — victims of neglect, pollution and a rapidly urbanizing India. But Indian environmentalist Arun Krishnamurthy, has made it his new mission to tap into this technology of the past, to secure water for its future. For almost 20 years, Krishnamurthy has worked to bring India's decreasing bodies of water back to life through his organization Environmentalist Foundation of India (EFI).
EFI has restored 657 water bodies across 19 states — from lakes to ponds, and most recently stepwells. “Stepwell restoration is the next big challenge that I would like to add to EFI's responsibilities because we have a greater responsibility now for protecting the historical heritage, which is evidence of human intelligence,” Krishnamurthy says.
EFI already draws on the stepwell design principles of its ancestors to guide its lake and pond restoration efforts. “They include the engineering, land use, understanding the water flows, the storage parameters (参数): How were the steps built? Where was the palm tree planted? How was the canal cut?” Krishnamurthy says, “So we take lessons from the past, and adapting them to the present-day challenges is what we are carrying out.”
Despite his extensive experience in recovering freshwater bodies, Krishnamurthy says stepwells are uniquely demanding. Restoring these ancient structures calls for specialized traditional knowledge and craftsmanship — and even after they are revived, human destruction makes their maintenance an ongoing struggle. Krishnamurthy says these stepwells will need public responsibility to safeguard their future.
24. What can we learn about stepwells from paragraph 1?
A. They are freshly constructed water projects.
B. They are built on the ground for easy access.
C. They served multiple purposes in ancient India.
D. They were designed to deal with industrial waste.
25. What does Krishnamurthy think of restoring stepwells?
A. It is a duty and a challenge.
B. It is costly but meaningful.
C. It is easy with modern tools.
D. It is based on lake restoration.
26. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 4?
A. To describe the structure of old stepwells.
B. To stress the necessity of water protection.
C. To explain the difficulty in restoring stepwells.
D. To show the value of ancient stepwell wisdom.
27. What is needed to protect stepwells in the long run according to Krishnamurthy?
A. Steady urbanization. B. Community involvement.
C. Modern engineering. D. More government funding.
C
To the untrained eye, there is very little difference between the three known versions of the artwork The Lute Player. Almost identical in composition, the paintings all portray a young subject, in white clothes and with an instrument in hand, turning slightly away from the viewer. Each appears to carry Italian painter Caravaggio’s distinctive mastery of light and shadow.
To art historians, however, there has long been broad agreement: The versions held by Russia’s Hermitage Museum and France’s Wildenstein Collection were created by Caravaggio, while the one at Britain’s Badminton House is merely a copy.
A Swiss tech company begged to differ, and it claimed there was an almost 86% chance that Badminton House’s version is authentic. The company’s AI model, which was trained to recognize markers of Caravaggio’s style, including shapes, color palettes and compositional structures, also declared (though with less statistical certainty) that Wildenstein’s version was likely a copy. Its analysis found “a significant difference” between the latter painting’s “visual characteristics” and those of Caravaggio’s other works.
The company’s declarations have not always contradicted the established scholarship. It claimed that a long-debated painting of Vincent van Gogh at the National Museum in Oslo had a 97% chance of being genuine. The Vincent van Gogh authorship was later matched by more conventional research, including technical analyses and studies of the artist’s letters.
The company’s authentication approach combines machine learning, deep neural networks and computer vision algorithms (算法). To date, the company has produced models for over 200 artists. In each, the AI is trained on two photographic datasets: a “positive” one, containing images of recognized paintings by the artist mentioned, and a “negative” one comprising similar but inauthentic works. The company emphasized that having a “high degree of similarity” between the two datasets to learn the difference is crucial.
“I have reservations about it. Authentication is rarely just about surface style,” said art historian Sharon Hecker. “You have to know about the workshop, practices, materials, the condition of the work, the restoration history, and how a particular artist’s work evolved over time.”
28. What do we know about the three versions of The Lute Player?
A. They are recognized as Caravaggio’s artworks.
B. They differ greatly in composition and light use.
C. They look almost the same to non-professionals.
D. They are refused by famous European museums.
29. Why is the Vincent van Gogh’s painting mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To prove AI research has its reliability.
B. To show the limits of traditional art study.
C. To compare different creating styles of art.
D. To stress the difficulty in painting creation.
30. What is Sharon Hecker’s attitude to the AI authentication method?
A. Supportive. B. Indifferent. C. Disapproving. D. Doubtful.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI Joins in Artwork Identification
B. Conflicts of Caravaggio’s Artworks
C. AI Represents Traditional Art Appreciation
D. Approaches to Preserving Old Masterpieces

A new study sheds light on how methane (甲烷) is produced in the open ocean. Researchers at the University of Rochester identified the process could grow stronger as global temperatures rise.
Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas, yet scientists have long been puzzled by an unusual pattern. Surface ocean waters regularly release methane into the atmosphere, even though these waters contain plenty of oxygen. Traditionally, methane formation has been linked to environments without oxygen, such as wetlands or deep ocean sediments.
To better understand this contradiction, the research team combined global data with computer simulations. They found that certain microbes (微生物) can produce methane as they break down organic material, but only when phosphate, a key nutrient, is in short supply. This discovery changes how scientists view methane production in marine environments.
The study also highlights how climate change could influence this process in the future. As the ocean warms, the difference in density between surface water and deeper layers increases. This is expected to slow the upward and downward mixing that carries nutrients like phosphate up from depth. With less mixing, fewer nutrients reach the surface. The team’s model shows that this could leave surface waters increasingly depleted of phosphate, creating favorable conditions for methane-producing microbes.
If methane production rises, more of this gas could escape into the atmosphere. Because methane is so effective at trapping heat, this creates the risk of an intensifying cycle: Warmer oceans lead to higher methane emission, which then contributes to further warming.
Importantly, this cycle mechanism is not yet included in most major climate models. As scientists work to improve predictions, accounting for processes like this may be crucial for understanding how quickly climate change will progress. “Our work will help fill a key gap in climate prediction, which often ignores interactions between the changing environment and natural greenhouse gas sources to the atmosphere,” says Thomas Weber, one member of the research team.
32. What puzzled scientists about methane in the open ocean?
A. It is produced in deep ocean. B. It is fading in trapping heat.
C. It arises in oxygen-rich water. D. It speeds up ocean warming.
33. What does the underlined word “depleted” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Warned. B. Composed. C. Accused. D. Starved.
34. What can be inferred about the cycle mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. It relies on sufficient phosphate.
B. It could speed up global warming.
C. It is included in most climate models.
D. It weakens methane’s warming effect.
35. What does Thomas Weber think of their discovery?
A. It applies to specific ocean regions.
B. It’s a missing link in climate models.
C. It’s a result based on ideal conditions.
D. It works in controlling climate change.

Luke grew up in a modest family in the small town of Cedarville. His parents worked hard to make ends meet, but they always made sure Luke felt loved and secure. After graduating from high school, Luke moved to a big city to pursue his college degree in social work. During his studies, he often volunteered at local shelters and community centers. There, he met many children sleeping on the floor or on old, worn-out couches. Those children looked tired and unhappy, and their lack of proper sleeping arrangements broke Luke’s heart. He knew he had to do something to change this situation.
Inspired by what he witnessed during his volunteer work, Luke decided to establish an organization called Sleep in Fantastic Peace (SFP). His motivation was simple yet powerful: to ensure that every child in need could have a comfortable bed to sleep in. The purpose of the organization was to build and deliver beds to children across the United States who didn’t have one of their own.
Initially, Luke built beds himself with his family. The effort grew rapidly as local communities joined, driven by Luke’s passion. Over the years, SFP grew steadily. They built and delivered thousands of beds to children in different states. But Luke always dreamed of doing something even bigger, something that could make a huge impact in a short period.
That opportunity came when Luke decided to organize a massive bed-building event in the Charlotte Convention Center in North Carolina. The goal was to build 3,000 beds in just 24 hours for children who didn’t have a bed of their own. To achieve this, Luke and his team worked tirelessly on the planning. They created a detailed schedule, divided the volunteers into different teams, and arranged for the delivery of all the necessary materials.
On the event day, more than 2,500 volunteers flooded into the Charlotte Convention Center. They came from all walks of life — students, corporate teams, and families — united by a single purpose.

【答案】参考范文:
Dear Miss Jenkins,
I’m Li Hua from Class 3. I’m excited to learn about the coming English Dubbing Contest, and I’d like to share a suggestion about its form.
I suggest allowing students to form small teams of 2-4 members instead of competing alone. My reasons are simple. First, teamwork can reduce stage fright and help students learn from each other. Second, group dubbing often sounds more natural and lively, which will make the contest more enjoyable for both the participants and the audience. In my opinion, a team-based contest would encourage more students to join and show their talents.
Thank you for considering my idea.
Yours,
Li Hua

【67题答案】
【答案】参考范文:
The work of building beds began in the volunteers’ busy activities. Volunteers were divided into groups, each responsible for a specific part of the bed-building process. Some were cutting the wood, some were assembling the frames, and others were attaching the mattresses and bedding. Luke moved around the center, encouraging the volunteers and making sure everything was running smoothly. As the hours passed, the number of completed beds kept increasing. The volunteers worked with great enthusiasm, knowing that they were making a real difference in the lives of children.
As the clock struck the 24-hour mark, the goal was met. 3,000 beds stood ready for delivery. Luke addressed the volunteers, “This is just the beginning,” his voice trembling with emotion. “We’ve shown that when people come together, we can make a huge difference.” He thanked them for giving children the gift of sleep. And so, Luke and his team at SFP continued their mission, knowing that their efforts were bringing sweet dreams to children all across the country, just as they had set out to do.
