Last year, anxiety troubled me and weakened my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled, staring at a wall that faced me. My perfectionism was the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at everything, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me. One day, I attended a talk by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His talk awed and inspired me, and helped me want to make a difference. I joined a post-talk dinner with him. That smaller setting allowed me to slowly build courage to speak with him alone — something that had seemed impossible. This first contact was where my story began. A month later, Brown invited me to the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I see that my old self would have let this chance pass, but the new, more confident Erica enthusiastically seized it. Soon after, applications to join two youth nature groups were sent around my school. I decided to complete them, and soon I was part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence. I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle this whole time was myself. It was that voice in the back of my head telling me that one phrase that has stopped so many people from reaching their potential: I can’t. They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action. 4. What made Erica so anxious? A. A storm cloud. B. Her perfectionism. C. A wildlife talk. D. Her schoolwork. 5. What changes did Erica experience after Grant Brown’s talk? A. She gave a speech on wildlife protection bravely. B. She took chances eagerly and gained confidence. C. She immediately joined Grant Brown’s organization. D. She invited Grant Brown to have a dinner alone. 6. Which of the following words can best describe Erica? A. Reflective. B. Nervous. C. Patient. D. Sensitive. 7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. Good luck comes to those who will wait patiently. B. Doubts from others is the biggest barrier in life. C. Patient waiting helps unlock one’s potential. D. Active action matters more than passive waiting. B 5. B 6. A 7. 根据第一段中的“My name is Erica. Last year, anxiety troubled me and weakened my ability to do anything. I felt like a storm cloud hung over me. For almost a year I struggled, staring at a wall that faced me. My perfectionism was the main root of this: I wanted to be perfect at everything, which obviously in life is not possible, but it consumed me.(我叫埃里卡。去年,焦虑困扰着我,削弱了我做任何事的能力。我感觉一团乌云笼罩着我。我挣扎了将近一年,直面眼前的困境。我的完美主义是这一切的主要根源:我想要事事完美,这在生活中显然是不可能的,但它耗尽了我。)”可知,完美主义是造成埃里卡焦虑的根源。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段中的“One day, I attended a talk by wildlife conservationist Grant Brown at my high school. His talk awed and inspired me, and helped me want to make a difference.(有一天,我在高中学校听了野生动物保护者格兰特·布朗的讲座。他的讲座震撼并激励了我,助力我想要做出一些改变。)” 和第三段中的“A month later, Brown invited me to the World Youth Wildlife Conference. Looking back, I see that my old self would have let this chance pass, but the new, more confident Erica enthusiastically seized it. Soon after, applications to join two youth nature groups were sent around my school. I decided to complete them, and soon I was part of a growing global team of young people working to protect nature. Each of these new steps continued to grow my confidence.(一个月后,布朗邀请我参加世界青年野生动物大会。回想起来,我看到,过去的我会放过这次机会,但全新的、更加自信的埃里卡热切地抓住了它。不久后,加入两个青年自然组织的申请表在学校发放。我决定填写申请,很快我就加入了不断壮大的、致力于保护自然的全球青年队伍。每迈出的新一步都持续增强我的自信心。)” 可知,听完讲座后埃里卡主动抓住各类机会,自信心不断提升。 【6题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“I am writing this just six months since my journey began and I’ve realized that my biggest obstacle this whole time was myself.(我写这篇文章的时候,距离我的旅程开始才六个月,我意识到这段时间里我最大的障碍是我自己。)” 根据第四段中的“They say good things come to those who wait; I say: grab every opportunity with everything you have and be impatient. After all, nature does not require our patience, but our action.(人们说美好事物会留给愿意等待的人;但我说:拼尽全力抓住每一个机会,不要被动等待。毕竟,大自然需要的不是我们的耐心,而是我们的行动。)” 可知,作者认为主动行动远比被动等待更重要。 C A team of Chinese scientists has developed Jiuzhang 4.0, the world’s fastest quantum (量子) computer prototype, according to a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature. Their contribution has pushed the quantum advantage in computing to an unprecedented level, demonstrating China’s leading position in the field. Led by the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), the team used the prototype to solve the Gaussian boson sampling problem at a speed more than 10 to the 54th times that of the world’s most powerful supercomputer. This new version is vastly faster than its predecessor, Jiuzhang 3.0, which was introduced in 2023. This means that the most complex data sample generated by ‘Jiuzhang 4.0’ takes only 25 microseconds to produce — shorter than the blink of an eye. Unlike traditional computers that use bits (0 or 1), quantum computers use qubits Thanks to a property called superposition, a qubit can be 0, 1, or both at the same time. This allows quantum computers to explore many possible solutions at once. Jiuzhang 4.0 uses light particles, or photons, as its qubits. This design avoids the extreme cooling that many other quantum computers require, making it more energy-efficient. Professor Pan Jianwei, the leading researcher, stated that the new machine could be used for drug design, weather forecasting, and breaking encryption(加密). However, Pan stressed that Jiuzhang 4.0 is still a “special-purpose” quantum computer. It cannot run general software like a normal PC. “We are now working on a programmable, universal quantum computer, which may take another 10 years,” he said in an interview. Despite this challenge, China’s rapid progress has pushed the global quantum race into high speed. As research continues, the dream of a universal quantum computer moves closer to reality, promising to change science and technology in the decades ahead. 8. What does the underlined word “predecessor” in paragraph 2 most likely mean? A. A much faster computer. B. A different type of computer. C. A more advanced computer. D. An older version of computer. 9. How does the author develop paragraph 3? A. By making comparisons. B. By giving examples. C. By listing figures. D. By describing research process. 10. What can we learn about Jiuzhang 4.0 from the passage? A. It is the first quantum computer ever built in China. B. It is faster than supercomputers on certain tasks. C. It requires extreme cooling to work properly. D. It can run general software like a normal PC. 11. What is Professor Pan Jianwei’s attitude toward Jiuzhang 4.0? A. Doubtful. B. Unconcerned. C. Objective. D. Satisfied. D 9. A 10. B 11. 根据第二段划线词后“This new version is vastly faster than its predecessor, Jiuzhang 3.0, which was introduced in 2023.(这个新版本比它的predecessor——2023年推出的九章3.0快得多)”可知,九章3.0是九章4.0推出之前的旧版本,因此predecessor的含义是“更早版本的计算机”。 根据第三段“Unlike traditional computers that use bits (0 or 1), quantum computers use qubits (量子比特). (与使用比特(0或1)的传统计算机不同,量子计算机使用量子比特)”以及“Jiuzhang 4.0 uses light particles, or photons, as its qubits. This design avoids the extreme cooling that many other quantum computers require(九章4.0使用光粒子或光子作为其量子比特。这种设计避免了许多其他量子计算机所需的极端冷却)”可知,作者通过对比来展开第三段内容。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。根据第二段“the team used the prototype to solve the Gaussian boson sampling problem at a speed more than 10 to the 54th times that of the world’s most powerful supercomputer.(该团队使用九章4.0原型解决高斯玻色采样问题的速度,比世界最强大的超级计算机快10的54次方倍)”可知,九章4.0在特定任务上的速度远超超级计算机。 根据第四段“Professor Pan Jianwei, the leading researcher, stated that the new machine could be used for drug design, weather forecasting, and breaking encryption(加密). However, Pan stressed that Jiuzhang 4.0 is still a “special-purpose” quantum computer. It cannot run general software like a normal PC. (首席研究员潘建伟教授表示,这台新机器可用于药物设计、天气预报和破解加密。不过,潘教授强调九章4.0仍然是“专用”量子计算机,它无法像普通个人电脑一样运行通用软件)”可知,潘建伟教授既点明了九章4.0的应用价值,也客观指出了它的局限性,态度是客观的。 D A burned lunch at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans did more than simply disappoint a hungry worker. As soon as smoke spread to their area, Australian sleepy lizards (蜥蜴) all of a sudden stopped whatever they were doing — heads up and bodies tense — and started pacing the edges of their fenced area and digging the ground, eager to leave. However, other species in the same room didn’t respond. The incident hit scientists that maybe the lizards had evolved to recognize a smoke’s chemical signals. To test this, Chris Jolly, a conservation biologist at Macquarie University, and his co-workers exposed 10 adult female sleepy lizards to smoke, steam and recordings of wildfire sounds separately. The lizards were in a panic when there was smoke but were unaffected by steam or wildfire sounds. The findings suggest these lizards rely on smell rather than hearing to detect fire at long range, unlike some other lizards, frogs and bats. This agrees with Australian sleepy lizards’ known use of smell to recognize partners, with whom they form pair-bonds, and to find food and detect predators (捕食者). “Smoke also tends to travel ahead of the flames and cuts through background noise,” Jolly says, “making smell a more reliable early warning than sound in open, windy, noisy environments.” Many of the lizards tested had likely never experienced wildfire; their site hadn’t burned in more than 50 years, yet they still reacted strongly when they sensed smoke. That could represent natural adaptation to fire which the lizards are born with. Juli Pausas, a scientist at the Spanish National Research Council, says the findings contribute to the emerging recognition that certain animal behaviors may symbolize fire adaptations, a topic that has been under explored until recently. As wildfires increase with local weather change, these abilities might imply the difference between survival and loss of life. 12. What happened when smoke spread at Audubon Zoo? A. Lizards became very nervous. B. Workers put it out at once. C. The animals there stayed calm. D. All species tried to escape. 13. What is the main purpose of paragraph 2? A. To compare different animals. B. To test the wildfire influence. C. To introduce an experiment. D. To explain Lizard’s living habits. 14. What does the new finding about Lizards mainly contribute to? A. A clear picture of how local weather changes. B. A new breakthrough in wildfire control research. C. A better understanding of animals’ fire adaptation. D. A creative method to protect endangered lizards. 15. Which is the best title for the passage? A. A Burned Lunch Saved Lizards. B. Wildfires and Lizards’ Safety. C. The Wildfires Threatened Lizards. D. Lizards’ built-in Smoke Alarm. A 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第一段中“As soon as smoke spread to their area, Australian sleepy lizards (蜥蜴) all of a sudden stopped whatever they were doing — heads up and bodies tense — and started pacing the edges of their fenced area and digging the ground, eager to leave.(一旦烟雾蔓延到它们的活动区域,澳大利亚睡蜥会立刻停下所有动作 —— 抬头、身体紧绷 —— 开始在围栏边缘来回踱步并挖掘地面,急于逃离)”可知,烟雾扩散时蜥蜴表现得非常紧张。 根据第二段中“To test this, Chris Jolly, a conservation biologist at Macquarie University, and his co-workers exposed 10 adult female sleepy lizards to smoke, steam and recordings of wildfire sounds separately.(为了验证这一点,麦考瑞大学的保育生物学家克里斯·乔利及其同事将10只成年雌性睡蜥分别暴露于烟雾、蒸汽和野火录音环境中)”可知,本段主要目的是介绍一项实验。 根据最后一段中“Juli Pausas, a scientist at the Spanish National Research Council, says the findings contribute to the emerging recognition that certain animal behaviors may symbolize fire adaptations, a topic that has been under explored until recently.(西班牙国家研究委员会的科学家朱利·保萨斯表示,这些发现有助于人们逐渐认识到某些动物行为可能象征着对火的适应,这一课题直到最近才得到充分探索)”可知,这项新发现增进了对动物火适应能力的理解。 Travelling is a precious way to get close to nature and experience diverse local cultures. He always looked serious, and a scar on his cheek made him seem scary. Because of his rough appearance and quiet manner, I, like many others in the neighborhood, thought he was cold and unfriendly. People often whispered that he was difficult to get along with. I also kept my distance from him and tried not to talk to him. One rainy afternoon, however, an unexpected event changed my view. My cat, Mimi, climbed up a tall tree and got trapped. She was too scared to come down. To make things worse, my parents were not at home. I stood under the tree, filled with anxiety and helplessness. Just then, the man appeared. “Don’t worry,” he said softly. To my surprise, he took out a small bag of cat treats and began calling Mimi gently. He moved slowly, careful not to frighten her. Within a few minutes, Mimi jumped down into his arms. At that moment I thought he was actually kind and helpful. I expressed my thanks to him. After that time, I started paying visits to him from time to time. I helped him carry heavy boxes or fix things around his house. In return, he shared stories about his younger days. Through these conversations, I found he was often lonely, as he missed his sons who worked far away. Slowly, we became good friends. My previous wrong judgment of him was a complete misunderstanding. This experience taught me a valuable lesson. We should never judge a person by their appearance or by what others say. True character is often hidden beneath the surface. Taking time to understand others not only builds a meaningful bond but also enriches our own lives. 46. misunderstand reflect change save visit appreciate ugly judge bond attitude help trap People in the neighborhood used to ______ the new neighbor by his scary looks. → I held a negative ______ towards him as well and chose to keep away from him. ↓ ↓ One afternoon,my pet cat was ______ in a tall tree and I had no way to help her. → I felt extremely anxious and ______ when I could not solve the problem on my own. ↓ ↓ To my surprise, the new neighbor appeared and ______ my cat successfully. → I found he was kind and helpful. C A team of Chinese scientists has developed Jiuzhang 4.0, the world’s fastest quantum (量子) computer prototype, according to a study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature. C. Objective. D. Satisfied. D A burned lunch at Audubon Zoo in New Orleans did more than simply disappoint a hungry worker. Travelling is a precious way to get close to nature and experience diverse local cultures.
