It began as just another routine shift for Vincent, a traffic policeman. When he ___1___ a white car for having a minor traffic violation (违规) , he had no idea this stop would reconnect him with someone from the very start of his life.
During the friendly ___2___ , the driver, retired Piscataway police officer Matthew, mentioned his former career. The conversation flowed easily — ___3___ Vincent mentioned that he grew up on Poe Place. Matthew froze, his memory unfolding. That street name rang a distant bell.
Slowly, a story from nearly thirty years ago resurfaced. Matthew, then a new officer, had responded to an emergency call on that very street. A woman had gone into labor unexpectedly, and with an ambulance still minutes away, the situation became ___4___ . Following a doctor’s instructions over the phone, Matthew assisted in a sudden home delivery, helping bring a healthy baby boy into the world.
As Matthew vividly ___5___ the house, the street, and the tense yet amazing moments, Vincent listened, his senses sharpening. Then came the detail that changed everything: Matthew estimated it happened about 27 years ago, and the baby’s name was Vincent.
At that ___6___ moment, time seemed to fold. “That was me,” Vincent revealed, emotion shaking in his voice. The retired officer who had once gently held a newborn life was now face to face with the grown police officer that baby had become.
Astonished and ___7___ , the two men had an encounter so rare that the New Jersey State Police later compared it to “a hole in one or winning the lottery”. Not long after, Vincent and his mother visited Matthew and his wife, ___8___ the unlikely pieces of a story that began with an unexpected birth and circled back in an equally unexpected traffic stop.
In a gesture that spoke louder than words, Vincent issued no ___9___ that day, only sincere thanks. Sometimes, life pulls you over not to punish, but to remind you of the extraordinary ___10___ that drive us forward.

Campus life is exciting — but can be challenging, especially if you just arrived. With new experiences and opportunities ahead, you’ll need to know where to live and where to find help. Here are some tips to help you live your campus life to the fullest.
Campus Housing
Finding suitable housing is probably the first, most important aspect of attending a college or university. As a student, you’ll have various options to consider. From dormitories to apartments, each type of housing comes with its own set of advantages and considerations.
For example, be sure you know the application deadlines for signing up for a room or apartment — they’re often three to six months before the term begins. If you want to secure your ideal room type, submit your application as early as possible, since rooms are often assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. If you will be sharing a room, speak up about your preferences regarding roommates, as this can greatly impact your overall living experience. Take note, too, of the amenities offered, such as laundry facilities, public areas, and study spaces, as these can vary considerably among different types of accommodation. If a residence does not provide the facilities you need, consider other housing options.
Understanding the housing policies is also important. Familiarize yourself with rules regarding noise levels, guests, and other specific regulations or limitations. Since housing policies may differ among residences, checking them carefully can help you choose a living environment that best suits your needs and expectations.
Campus Resources & Activities
Most schools offer a wide range of resources to support both academic success and personal growth. Academic support centers offer one-on-one study help, study groups, and workshops on skills such as time management, note-taking, exam preparation, and academic writing. Libraries provide various materials and quiet study spaces. Clubs, service groups, and cultural organizations help you explore interests and give you a chance to talk about your personal and family connections with others who have similar backgrounds. Sports teams and friendly sports games can also build skills, fitness, and teamwork.
Conclusion
Congratulations on beginning your college journey. College can be a transformative time. By familiarizing yourself with campus life and using the resources available to you, you’ll be sure to make the most of the experience.

Many of the villagers of the Chatra district were pretty used to seeing elephants passing through the village. One morning, however, there was one elephant that immediately stood out from the group. She circled around a muddy area of a field and wouldn’t settle down. The villagers couldn’t understand why. Then the elephant began to dig her trunk (象鼻) into the muddy field. She was completely separate from her group at this point.
It soon became apparent to the villagers that the elephant was digging for something under the ground. Every once in a while she would step back, obviously from tiredness. The poor elephant continued digging from sunrise into sunset. The villagers were worried that she could be dangerous.
Eventually, after so many hours had gone by, the villagers knew they had to do something. They began to proceed with care, just in case the elephant became panicked. Then, as they got closer, they understood what was happening. Inside of the hole that she had dug was her baby calf, which had fallen in and couldn’t get out.
Unfortunately, without knowing it, the mama elephant was actually making the situation a lot worse. The more she dug, the more the baby was pushed back into the muddy hole. The villagers knew that if they didn’t step in the baby elephant would eventually suffocate (窒息) and not make it.
However, it wouldn’t be an easy task to get the baby elephant out. So they began thinking creatively, and before long an idea came to them. The first thing they did was drive a banana truck through to scare away the mama elephant. With the mother elephant at a safe distance away, they used that time to remove the pile of sand near the hole that was making it difficult for her to rescue the baby. Once they had cleared a way, the villagers moved the banana truck so that the mother elephant could return. They hoped that now she would have enough space to grab the baby and bring her calf out.
After digging for 11 hours, this mama elephant was able to wrap her trunk around the calf’s body and began to pull it out. After a few pulls she finally had her baby back by her side. As the mama and the calf walked away into the sunset, the villagers noticed the most heartwarming act: the mama and the baby were walking away with their trunks intertwined.
14. Seeing the elephant circling around a muddy field, the villagers felt ________.
A. worried B. confused C. scared D. excited
15. Why did the villagers decide to help the mother elephant?
A. She was in great panic. B. Other elephants had left.
C. She was unable to feed her baby. D. The baby elephant was in danger.
16. The villagers used a truck to ________.
A. remove the sand B. bring bananas to the elephants
C. pull the baby elephant out D. frighten the mother elephant off
17. According to the passage, we can describe the villagers as ________.
A. creative and persuasive B. patient and generous
C. warm-hearted and resourceful D. independent and courageous

Scientists in the US have uploaded a fruit fly to a computer simulation (模拟) . Does it sound like the opening of a sci-fi film? Actually, in San Francisco, biotechnology company Eon Systems scientists have recently done this exact experiment. They uploaded a copy of the brain of a living fly into a simulation, and created a virtual insect that knew how to walk, fly, groom and feed in its virtual environment.
The big scientific news is that the team has essentially recreated the creature’s behavioural wiring. The digital insect already knew how to behave like a fly, without any training or prompting. This challenges a central assumption of modern AI: that intelligence must be acquired. In the case of the fly, much of its behaviour appears to be built-in.
“The brain was scanned using electron microscopy. Our head of engineering led a project to emulate (复刻) that brain, and now we’ve placed the emulated brain back into a body, so it can wander around a virtual world,” Michael Andregg, CEO of Eon Systems said.
A fruit fly’s brain comprises around 140,000 neurons. The virtual fly has 87 joints and can do pretty much anything an actual fly can. But does it realise it’s living in a simulation?
“The fly probably knows something’s off, because we’re not simulating the environment with high fidelity (保真度) ,” says Andregg. “We can’t give very specific taste and smell clues — just that something smells sweet or tastes bitter. But there are no complex smells.”
Brain emulation, Andregg suggests, could eventually allow humans “to grow in a world with superintelligence. Our goal is to make the emulation and computed brain and body feel indistinguishable from the natural biochemical body and brain,” he continues. “If it feels different, we’ve done something wrong.”
But we’re still a long way from the upload-yourself-into-the-internet futures imagined in sci-fi films, mainly because, in this case, the fly’s brain had to be removed from the body first. “Scanning the body was too hard,” says Andregg, which will probably reduce the waiting list for human volunteers willing to try out the technology.
Meanwhile, Chong, a biological computing scientist, believes biological computing could achieve things that traditional computing has struggled with. “There’s a thing called Moravec’s paradox (悖论) , which is well known in robotics: what humans find very difficult, computers find easy, and what computers find difficult, humans find easy,” he says.
“Abstract reasoning, mathematics and language are relatively recent in evolutionary (进化的) terms, which is partly why computers excel at them. But motor control and probabilistic decision-making are things we’ve inherited through millions of years of evolution. Robots may be very good at solving maths problems, but we’re still trying to build robots that can walk properly.” Biological systems like the fruit fly simulation, he says, might eventually power robots, drones and other machines that need to handle the messy unpredictability of the real world.
For now, somewhere in Silicon Valley, a fruit fly is living its second life inside a computer, totally unaware that it is living in a virtual world.
18. The author uses “a sci-fi film” in Paragraph 1 mainly to ________.
A. indicate the experiment may be based on a sci-fi film.
B. present the experiment as surprisingly futuristic.
C. suggest the experiment may affect future life.
D. prove the experiment to be highly unreliable.
19. What can we learn from the digital fly research?
A. The digital fly is not able to taste and smell.
B. The digital fly realises it is in a virtual world.
C. Some intelligence of the digital fly may be inborn.
D. The same technology will soon be tested on human volunteers.
20. Regarding biological computing, Chong might agree that ________.
A. it will allow robots to do what they presently cannot.
B. it improves human’s decision-making ability.
C. it speeds up the course of human evolution.
D. it will overtake traditional computing .
D
Right now, I’m glued to my phone. Like most people, I get my news from various apps — social posts, podcasts, newsletters — and when things are blowing up, I can’t look away. The strangest part, though, is that the more I watch and read what other people are saying, the lonelier I feel.
This is hardly a new or unique experience. Sociologists have been talking about it for nearly 80 years. In 1950, David Riesman published a book called The Lonely Crowd, in which he argued that the rise of consumerism and mass media had led to a new kind of personality type that is deeply sensitive to loneliness. He called this personality “other-directed”. Other-directed people are constantly attuned to what everyone around them is doing, using the preferences of their peer groups to decide what to buy, wear and think. Riesman warned that other-directed people are obsessed with conforming, anxious to be “part of a crowd”. What they fear more than anything is being alone.
There’s a paradox in every other-directed person’s heart. As much as they may want to conform, to be part of the group chat, they also want to feel like they are unique. Riesman explained that consumerism itself relieves this other-directed anxiety by offering “false personalisation”.
This kind of false personalisation shows up all the time in the algorithms (算法) that shape our experiences online. Many apps have a “for you” feed full of videos that feel tailor-made for our specific tastes. And yet it is shaped by an algorithm that we don’t control, whose purpose is largely to keep our eyeballs glued to the same app that everyone else is glued to. It is “for you” in the service of conformity.
As other-directed people, we are invited to express ourselves mainly by participating in peer groups or by “joining the conversation”. And yet we still feel lonely. That’s because when we piece ourselves together out of what we think other people want, we hide from something crucial: our own truly personal, messy, non-conformist desires.
Riesman suggested two solutions to this other-directed problem. First, we need to take back our leisure hours from the hyper-consumerist world of media. All that effort we put into paying attention to our peers is too much like work, and we need more free play! Second, we should test out new identities and experiences. Figure out what we enjoy when nobody is telling us what “fun” is supposed to be. Do something we have never done before. Surprise ourselves. And see how it feels to just...experiment.
You won’t figure out who you are from a “for you” feed or a chatbot. So get off your phone, do something unexpected and be yourself for a while.
21. What does the word “attuned” underlined in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Opposed. B. Sympathetic. C. Attentive. D. Critical.
22. What can be inferred about other-directed people from the passage?
A. They feel greatly terrified of being left out.
B. They usually give up their individuality to conform.
C. Their loneliness can be relieved by chatting with others.
D. Their false personalisation pushes them to think for themselves.
23. According to David Riesman, we should ________.
A. recognise consumerism in the world of media B. focus on building a consistent self-identity
C. achieve a balance between work and play D. explore to find out what we truly enjoy
24. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. A Cure for Loneliness B. Alone in the Digital Crowd
C. Face Our True Selves Bravely D. How Other-Directedness Works
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)

We all grew up hearing about the benefits of learning a new language. ___25___ But is it beneficial for your mind? According to modern neuroscience, the answer is a definitive YES. If you engage with the language actively and consistently.
It builds a more powerful brain. When you learn a language, you aren’t just memorizing words. You are training your brain to recognize new patterns, switch between different grammatical systems, and solve communication problems. ___26___ This center is key for focus, multitasking, and even resisting distractions. Essentially, it’s like weightlifting for your mind, building cognitive (认知的) muscles that help in all areas of thinking.
Recently, scientists have also begun studying the long-term connection between knowing two languages and mental resilience. Promising findings have led to new approaches in cognitive health. Research suggests that constantly managing two languages creates a “cognitive reserve”. This reserve acts as a buffer (缓冲) , potentially delaying the beginning of age-related cognitive decline. ___27___ People with this linguistic training often maintain better memory and problem-solving skills later in life. The mental flexibility it provides gives plenty of protection. It helps create a more adaptable and resilient mind.
___28___ While struggling with new grammar rules can be annoying, it also forces you to see the world from a different cultural angle. To truly understand a language, you must absorb the history, humor, and values contained within it. ___29___ It builds empathy (共情) and cultural understanding. It broadens your view of the global community, linking you to people and ideas in a meaningful way.
A. It’s often praised as a valuable skill.
B. This process doesn’t just teach you vocabulary.
C. Indeed, language learning can make one’s brain powerful.
D. Its benefits go far beyond building language skills, though.
E. Furthermore, learning a new language can reshape your vision.
F. This hard mental workout strengthens the brain’s control center.
G. Individuals who actively use a second language regularly show stronger neural pathways.

VI. 阅读表达 (共4小题;第60、61题各2分,第62题3分,第63题5分,共12分)
阅读下面的短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
For Sam, “home” had always been a large, noisy farm in Iowa. When his parents announced a move to a small apartment in Seattle for his mom’s new job, conflicts arose. His conflict wasn’t with a person, but with a place — a city that felt like a cold concrete maze (迷宫) .
He spent the first month as a “depressed ghost” in his new high school, headphones sealing (隔绝) him in a bubble of country music. His only pleasure was the tiny, walled concrete square attached to their building, which the landlord called a “patio”. It housed a single, sad-looking raised bed filled with hard-packed dirt and weeds.
One rainy Saturday, out of boredom and a deep, aching homesickness for the smell of soil, Sam put on a jacket and started pulling weeds. The action was familiar, a muscle memory of tasks back home. He found a few packets of old seeds — lettuce and marigolds — in a drawer and planted them without thinking. He didn’t expect anything to grow.
But he kept checking. He watered them. To his shock, ten days later, tiny green shoots pushed through the dark soil. A fierce, protective pride rose in his chest. He had done that. In the heart of the gray city, he had made something grow.
He started spending afternoons there, tending his little garden. One evening, his mom brought out two glasses of lemonade. They sat in the two folding chairs he’d found, surrounded by the green life he’d grown. “It smells like home out here,” she said softly, and he realized it was true. The smell of damp earth and green tomatoes was his support.
Sam’s conflict with the city didn’t end. The traffic was still loud, and the school was still overwhelming. But he had carved out a piece of it for himself. He had learned that home isn’t just a location you’re given; it’s a feeling you build, seed by seed, wherever you are. In taking care of that small patch of green, he wasn’t just growing plants — he was growing roots, and finally, a new sense of belonging.
45. Why did Sam’s family move to Seattle?

【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m delighted to share with you the details of the “Robots on Campus” themed event in our school’s science and technology festival last month.
During the event, there were robot exhibitions displaying various types of robots, from those that could perform simple tasks like picking up objects to complex ones capable of dancing and playing music. Additionally, we had workshops where experts explained the principles behind robot operation. Students were even given hands-on opportunities to program basic robot movements.
I’ve reaped a great deal from this event. It not only enhanced my understanding of robotics but also inspired my enthusiasm for science and technology. Now, I’m more eager to explore the mysteries of the technological world.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
Yours,
Li Hua
