Many of us enter a new year feeling we must improve. We set big goals, make long to-do lists, and promise ourselves we will never waste time again. But this way of thinking often leaves us feeling stressed, guilty, and never good enough.
This year, psychologists and life coaches are suggesting a different path. Do less, but do what matters.
Dr. Lynn Barrett, a professor of positive psychology, says our brains are not built for constant busyness. When we try to do too many things at once, we lose focus, feel tired, and rarely enjoy any of it. Success is not about how much you finish. It is about how much you care about what you do.
A 2025 study by the University of California found that people who limited their yearly goals to two or fewer felt more satisfied and accomplished than those who set five or more. The more goals people had, the more likely they were to give up halfway.
So what does doing less look like in real life?
For some, it means saying no to extra projects at work that do not excite them. For students, it might mean choosing to study two subjects deeply instead of rushing through five. For others, it is simply allowing themselves to rest without feeling guilty.
Jesse, 28, a teacher in Chicago, tried this idea last year. She used to join every club, coach every team, and take extra classes. She was always busy, but she never felt happy. This year, she only stayed in the reading club and spent more time walking her dog. She feels calmer, and she is a better teacher because of it.
The key, experts say, is to ask yourself one simple question before saying yes to anything. Does this make my life better, or just busier?
If the answer is just busier, it is okay to say no. You do not have to do everything to be successful. Sometimes, doing less is the bravest and wisest choice you can make.
24. What did the 2025 study by the University of California find?
A. Giving up goals means failure in life.
B. More goals bring greater satisfaction.
C. Busy people are healthier and happier.
D. People with fewer goals felt more content.
25. After doing less, Jesse felt ________.
A. relaxed B. confused C. ambitious D. guilty
26. What is the key advice given by experts?
A. To set as many yearly goals as possible.
B. To accept all extra work projects actively.
C. To judge if it improves life before agreeing.
D. To keep working to achieve personal success.
27. What can we learn from the text?
A. People should set plenty of life goals.
B. Constant busyness leads to greater success.
C. People should make full use of every minute.
D. Doing less things helps people live better.
C
Cassowaries are large flightless birds native to the rainforests and mountain ranges of Australia and Papua New Guinea. They are among the heaviest living birds on Earth and can weigh more than 140 pounds, with strong legs and long dagger-like claws that make them one of the most powerful and dangerous birds in the world. For a long time, scientists have been puzzled by the bony, helmet-like structures on their heads called casques. The real function of these structures has remained unclear, with different guesses including protection, heat control, sound making and visual communication.
A new study published in Scientific Reports has revealed an amazing secret that cassowary casques glow brightly under ultraviolet light. The research was led by anatomist and paleontologist Todd Green. His team found that the keratin, a protein also found in human hair and skin, covering the casques can absorb UV light and re-emit it as visible blue-green light. This kind of fluorescence (荧光) is different from the light produced by fireflies, which can create light on their own through chemical reactions inside their bodies.
The researchers tested more than 40 museum specimens, some over 100 years old, and several live cassowaries in conservation centers. They discovered that different species have clearly different glowing patterns. Southern and northern cassowaries show bright fluorescence on different parts of their casques, while dwarf cassowaries do not glow at all. Since most birds can see ultraviolet light that is invisible to human eyes, scientists believe the glowing casques act as important visual signals in the dark rainforest environment.
This new finding supports the idea that casques mainly work for communication and species recognition instead of defense, as the casque structure is surprisingly fragile and not fit for fighting off enemies. The special glow also provides a simple and effective way for researchers to identify different cassowary species quickly and accurately, which is highly helpful for both scientific studies and wildlife protection. It once again shows that even animals we think we know well still hold many unexpected and amazing secrets waiting to be discovered by curious and careful researchers.
28. What do we know about cassowaries from Paragraph 1?
A. Their weight is heavier than other wild birds.
B. Their head casques have confirmed practical uses.
C. They own powerful claws that bring potential danger.
D. They mainly live in dry plains and mountain areas in Australia.
29. According to the passage, how do cassowaries produce the glowing light?
A. Absorb and re-emit ultraviolet light.
B. Create light via internal chemical reactions.
C. Show different glowing patterns on casques.
D. Send visual signals under dark rainforest cover.
30. What can we learn about cassowaries’ glowing casques from the last two paragraphs?
A. It helps researchers distinguish cassowary species easily.
B. The casque is tough enough to defend against enemies.
C. All three cassowary species have glowing casques.
D. Humans can see the UV glow of casques directly.
D
In every generation, societal norms shift subtly — or sometimes dramatically —reflecting changing values, technology, and cultural influences. Generation Z, those born roughly between 1997 and 2012, is redefining these norms in ways that were almost unthinkable a decade ago. From the way they communicate to how they work, consume, and express themselves, Gen Z is challenging conventions and rewriting the rules of everyday life, often with a blend of pragmatism, social consciousness, and digital fluency. However, the latest trend among this generation, known for its progressive views, is beyond expectations: they are embracing traditional values and lifestyles once seen as relics of the past.
The trad (short for traditionalist) movement has occupied a large space in Gen Z culture. For Gen Z, trad refers to a shift toward traditional norms and aesthetics, manifesting in several ways. Younger adults are abandoning the typical work-and-party lifestyle for domestic pastimes like baking, sewing and gardening. Modest fashion, including corseted dresses and hair bows, is making a comeback. Many also accept traditional gender roles, sharing homemaking dynamics on social media.
Going trad is not a one-size-fits-all concept. For some, it is a nostalgic return to simpler times; for others, it is merely an aesthetic choice. What is certain is that the play-hard-work-harder lifestyle cherished by older generations is being replaced by a more balanced way of living.
The rise of the trad trend results from several factors. First, it roots in the cottagecore movement, which gained widespread popularity amid people’s longing for a slower pace of life. Burdened by fast-paced urban routines, many sought emotional comfort in a gentle pastoral lifestyle, and this kind of escape from hectic modern life gradually developed into a lasting lifestyle choice. Second, it is a reaction to modern burnout. Gen Z grows up in a world full of anxiety and uncertainty, and traditional structures offer them stability and purpose. Unlike Millennials who rebelled against structure, Gen Z rebels against chaos by turning to the past. Third, social media plays a crucial role in promoting the trend. Influencers with vintage styles or homemaking content have gained millions of followers. Critics argue the trend romanticizes oppressive gender roles and makes traditional values performative, while supporters believe it can be empowering when chosen freely and can coexist with progressive beliefs.
The long-term impact of Gen Z’s turn to traditionalism remains uncertain. It may start a larger cultural shift, reshaping domesticity, community and even politics. Whatever it is, Gen Z’s interest in traditional values reflects their search for something enduring in an age of change.
31. What does the word “manifesting” underlined in Paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Providing. B. Revealing. C. Changing. D. Reminding.
32. Which of the following statements about Gen Z’s “going trad” is correct?
A. They give up domestic activities such as baking and gardening.
B. They prefer casual dating to long-term committed relationships.
C. They wear popular clothes including corseted dresses and hair bows.
D. They are replacing the play-hard-work-harder lifestyle with a balanced one.
33. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?
A. Millennials were satisfied with the structure of modern society.
B. Gen Z’s turn to traditionalism is a way to escape modern chaos.
C. Gen Z and Millennials share the same attitude towards tradition.
D. Modern society has brought Gen Z a sense of stability and purpose.
34. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Different forms of the trad trend.
B. Generations’ attitudes toward social rules.
C. Gen Z’s trad trend, its causes and cultural influences.
D. Mixed opinions about the popular trad trend of Gen Z.

第一节(共4小题,第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。
In daily life, many teenagers prefer instant pleasure rather than long-term rewards. They tend to spend hours scrolling through short videos, playing online games or buying fancy things without hesitation, even though they know these behaviors will distract them from schoolwork and self-improvement. This typical attitude is called a lack of delayed gratification.
Delayed gratification refers to the ability to resist the temptation of immediate satisfaction and wait for more valuable future rewards. Researchers have found that teenagers with this ability usually perform better in study, manage time wisely and maintain better interpersonal relationships. They are more likely to stick to long-term goals, such as improving their English or developing a lifelong hobby.
However, modern digital life makes it harder for teenagers to practice self-control. Online entertainment is designed to offer quick excitement, which easily traps teenagers in a cycle of instant enjoyment. Once they get used to getting pleasure right away, they will become impatient and unwilling to make continuous efforts for future achievements.
To build the ability of delayed gratification, students are advised to set clear small goals every week. When they feel the urge to enjoy instant pleasure, they can pause for ten minutes and think about their long-term dreams. Gradually, they will form a good habit of making rational choices instead of following temporary desires blindly.
35. What is delayed gratification according to the passage?

【答案】24. D 25. A 26. C 27. D

________________________________________________________________________________
36. What negative influence will the habit of instant pleasure bring to teenagers?
________________________________________________________________________________
37. Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
➤ Modern digital life makes it much easier for teenagers to develop self-control.
________________________________________________________________________________
38. What will you do to improve your ability of delayed gratification? (In about 40 words)
________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】35. The ability to resist the temptation of immediate satisfaction and wait for more valuable future rewards.
36. They will become impatient and unwilling to make continuous efforts for future achievements.
37. Modern digital life makes it much easier for teenagers to develop self-control. Reason: Modern digital life easily traps teenagers and makes them get used to getting pleasure right away. They will become impatient and unwilling to make continuous efforts for future achievements.
38. I will set clear small goals every week. When I feel the urge to enjoy instant pleasure, I will pause for ten minutes and think about my long-term dreams. Gradually, I will form a good habit of making rational choices.
【解析】
【导语】文章主要介绍了延迟满足的概念,分析了青少年缺乏延迟满足能力的表现和原因,并提出了培养这一能力的建议。
【35题详解】
考查细节理解。由文章第二段中“Delayed gratification refers to the ability to resist the temptation of immediate satisfaction and wait for more valuable future rewards. (延迟满足指的是抵制即时满足的诱惑、等待更有价值的未来回报的能力)”可知,延迟满足是抵制即时满足的诱惑、等待更有价值的未来回报的能力。
【36题详解】
考查细节理解。由文章第三段中“Once they get used to getting pleasure right away, they will become impatient and unwilling to make continuous efforts for future achievements. (一旦他们习惯于立即获得快感,他们就会变得不耐烦,不愿意为未来的成就持续努力)”可知,追求即时快感的习惯会让青少年变得急躁,不愿为长远目标持续付出,这是获得即时满足的负面影响。
【37题详解】
考查细节理解。由文章第三段中“However, modern digital life makes it harder for teenagers to practice self-control. (然而,现代数字生活使青少年更难锻炼自控力)”可知,原句中的easier表述错误。又根据第三段中的“Online entertainment is designed to offer quick excitement, which easily traps teenagers in a cycle of instant enjoyment. Once they get used to getting pleasure right away, they will become impatient and unwilling to make continuous efforts for future achievements.
