The Champion Snorer It was the Cedar Rapids sleeper (卧铺车厢). Outside, it was as dark as the inside of an ink-bottle. In the sleeping car people slept — or tried it. Some of them slept like angels, peacefully, sweetly and quietly, while others slept like demons (恶魔), ill-intentionally, disgustingly, cruelly, ____1____ it was their mission (任务) to keep everybody else awake. Of these the man in lower number three was the worst. We had never heard anything snore like him. It was ____2____ (systematic) snoring that was ever done, even on one of these tournaments of snoring, a sleeping car. He didn’t begin ____3____ the lamps were turned down and everybody was in bed. Oh, no! There was more cold-blooded magic in his system than that. He waited until everybody had a taste of sleep, just to see ____4____ nice and pleasant it was. Then he broke in on their sound sleep like a winged, breathing demon, and they never knew what peace was again that night. He started out with terrific “Gu-r-r-rt!” that opened every eye in the car. However, we all hoped it was an accident. ____5____ (trust) that he would not do it again, we all forgave him. Then he ruined our hopes and spoiled the sweet sincerity of our forgiveness by a long-drawn “Gw-a-h-h-hah!” that sounded too much like business ____6____ (be) accidental. Then every head in that sleepless sleeper was held off the pillow for a minute, waiting in breathless suspense ____7____ (hear) a louder snore before it — hopefully — stopped. But the sleeper in “lower three” went on in regular rhythms ____8____ indicated good staying qualities, “Gwa-a-a-h! Gwa-a-a-h! Gahwayway! Gahway-wah! Gahwa-a-ah!” Evidently it was going to last all night; and the ____9____ (exhaust) heads drooped back on the sleepless pillows, and the scolding began. Pretty soon “lower three” gave us a little variation. He shot off a spiteful “Gwook!” which left us _____10_____ (wonder) whether his nose had got mad at him and was going to strike. Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.addition B.consumed C.controllable D.present E.quote F.reported G.respected H.review I.step J.value K.worthless Another Amazing Achievement? Many science stories you read online are pretty unreliable. Some of them are put out there just to attract your eyeballs. In order to become a wiser reader, here are some simple questions you should ask yourself. Where is the proof? Never accept anything just because a reporter says so. Demand proof. If the story does not ____11____ any real scientist from real labs, junk (丢弃) it. Who did it? Any reliable science news story has to answer some basic questions. If it does not, don’t believe it. At the top of the list: Who did the original research? If the work was done by scientists working for a for-profit company, be careful. It is not that industry-motivated research is ____12____ but when it comes to science, you had better look for studies done by scientists at top universities or ____13____ research groups. They are more likely to ____14____ the truths of nature. Where was the original study published? When a researcher finds something that looks like a valuable ____15____ to his field, he does not go to the local newspaper. Rather, he writes a research article and submits (提交) it to a scientific journal (学术期刊). The journal editors then ____16____ it and send it to a few other researchers in the field for critical feedback. This process is an important quality control ____17____ . Only after the paper passes this peer review (同行评议) can it be published. If the news story you are reading does not mention any article published in a journal, be suspicious (持怀疑态度的). Maybe the “scientist” whose work is being ____18____ is not a scientist at all, or the work is not worthwhile. What kind of research was it? Research can be done in many different ways. The more variables (变量) there are, the harder the research is to come to a reliable conclusion. In general, laboratory experiments are more ____19____ than observational studies and surveys. The next time you read about an “amazing achievement” online, ask a few more questions. Once you start looking critically at a study, you are well on your way to getting a better understanding of its _____20_____. Ⅲ.Reading Comprehension Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passages there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. (A) Many people believe that working to the maximum is the secret to success, but research has found that moderation(适度) also gets results on the job. In a study led by Ellen Langer of Harvard University, researchers asked people to translate sentences into a new made-up language. Subjects who practiced the language moderately beforehand made fewer errors than those who practiced extensively or not at all. High levels of knowledge can make people too attached to traditional ways of viewing problems across fields the arts, sciences, and politics. High conscientiousness is related to lower job performance, especially in simple jobs where it doesn’t pay to be a perfectionist. How long we stay on the clock and how we spend that time are under careful examination in many workplaces. The young banker who eats lunch at his desk is probably seen as a go-getter, while his colleagues who chat over a relaxed conference-room meal get dirty looks from the corner office. “People from cultures that value relationships more than ours does are shocked by the thought of eating alone in front of a computer”, says Art Markman, a professor of psychology at the University of Texas, Austin. Social interaction has been shown to lift mood(情绪) and get people thinking in new directions and in ways that could help improve any post-lunch effort. Markman also promotes off-task time. “Part of being a good thinker is experiencing things that are seemingly unrelated to what you are working on at the moment but give you fresh ideas about your work,” he says. “Also, there is a lot of research showing that a positive mood leads to higher levels of productivity and creativity. So, when people do things to increase their life satisfaction, they also make themselves more effective at work.” 36. What does Ellen Langer’s study show? A. It is worthwhile to be a perfectionist B. Translation makes people knowledgeable. C. Simpler jobs require greater caution. D. Moderate effort produces the best result. 37. The underlined word “go-getter” in paragraph 3 refers to someone Who_______. A. is good at handling pressure B. works hard to become successful C. a has a natural talent for his job. D. gets on well with his co-workers 38. What can be inferred from the last paragraph? A. A good thinker is able to inspire other people. B. Experience unrelated to your job is useless. C. A cheerful mood helps make a creative mind. D. Focusing on what you do raises productivity. 39. What does the text seem to advocate? A. Middle-of-the-road work habits. B. Balance between work and family. C. Long-standing cultural traditions. D. Harmony in the work environment. (B) Nearly 2,000 years ago, as the Romans began to pull out of Scotland, they left behind a curious treasure: 10 tons of nails (钉子), nearly a million of the things. The nail hoard (贮藏) was discovered in 1960 in a four-metre-deep pit (深坑) covered by two metres of small stones. Why had the Romans buried a million nails? The likely explanation is that the withdrawal was rushed, and they didn’t want the local Caledonians getting their hands on 10 tons of weapon-grade iron. The Romans buried the nails so deep that they would not be discovered for almost two millennia. Later civilisations would value the skilled blacksmith’s labour in a nail even more than the raw material. As Roma Agrawal explains in her new delightful book Nuts and Bolts, early 17th-century Virginians would sometimes burn down their homes if they were planning to relocate. This was an attempt to recover the valuable nails, which could be reused after sifting (筛选) the ashes. The idea that one might burn down an entire house just to reclaim the nails underlines how scarce, costly and valuable the simple-seeming technology was. The price of nails fell by 90% between the late 1700s and mid-1900s, as economist Daniel Sichel points out in a research paper. According to Sichel, although the falling price of nails was driven partly by cheaper iron and cheaper energy, most of the credit goes to nail manufacturers who simply found more efficient ways to turn steel into nails. Nails themselves have changed over the years, but Sichel studied them because they haven’t changed much. Roman lamps and Roman chariots (马车) are very different from LED strips and sports cars, but Roman nails are still clearly nails. It would be absurd to try to track the changing price of sports cars since 1695, but to ask the same question of nails makes perfect sense. I make no apology for being obsessed by a particular feature of everyday objects: their price. I am an economist, after all. After writing two books about the history of inventions, one thing I’ve learnt is that while it is the enchantingly sophisticated technologies that get all the hype (宣传炒作), it’s the cheap technologies that change the world. The Gutenberg printing press transformed civilisation not by changing the nature of writing but by changing its cost — and it would have achieved little without a parallel collapse in the price of surfaces to write on, thanks to an often-overlooked technology called paper. Solar panels had a few niche (小众的) uses until they became cheap; now they are transforming the global energy system. 40. The Romans buried the nails probably for the purpose of ________. A. saving them for future use B. keeping them from rusting C. letting them grow in value D. hiding them from the locals 41. The example of early 17th-century Virginians is used to ________. A. highlight the thriftiness (节俭) of early American colonists B. illustrate the high status of blacksmiths in that period C. contrast the attitudes of different civilisations towards nails D. show the preciousness of nail-making technology at that time 42. What played the major role in lowering the price of nails after the late 1700s? A. Increased productivity. B. Wider use of new energies. C. Stronger market competition. D. Reduced cost of raw materials. 43. Which of the following best summarises the last two paragraphs? A. Cheap technologies bring about revolutionary change. B. Technological innovation is vital to economic success. C. Technology defines people’s understanding of the world. D. Complicated technologies develop from small inventions. Section C Directions: Read the following passages. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. What happened to the noble art of the manly cry? One of our most firmly established ideas of masculinity (男子汉气概)is that men don’t cry. Although he might shed bitter tears at a funeral, a real man is expected to quickly regain control. Crying openly is for girls. ____44____ One study found women report crying five times more often than men do. So it’s perhaps surprising to learn that the gender gap in crying seems to be a recent development. Historically, men routinely wept. In documents of the Middle Ages, we find ambassadors bursting into tears when addressing the king; in medieval romances, knights cried because they missed their girlfriends. There’s no mention of men trying to hold back their tears. So where did all the male tears go? There was no anti-crying movement. No leaders of church or state introduced measures to discourage them.____45____ From there, it was a short leap to the poker-faced heroes of Ernest Hemingway, who couldn’t express their grief by any means but drinking and shooting buffalo (野牛). The most obvious possibility is that this shift is the result of changes that took place as we moved from an agricultural society to one that was urban and industrial. In the Middle Ages, a typical village had only a small number of inhabitants related by blood or marriage.____46____ But from the 18th century, the population became increasingly urbanized, and people were living amid thousands of strangers. Furthermore, changes in the economy required men to work together in factories and offices where emotional expression was discouraged as time-wasting. ____47____ There’s reason to believe that holding back tears can be harmful to your well-being. Research has suggested a link between stress-related illness and inadequate (不充足的) crying. So it might be better to return to the free-flowing tears of the past. When misfortune strikes, feel free to cry until our sleeves are soaked. As the Old Testament has it: “They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.” A. Nevertheless, by the Romantic period, masculine tears were reserved for poets. B. So it’s time for men to give up being stone-faced and open the floodgates. C. If men cried, they did so with people who would empathize (共情). D. Nor did their companions make fun of this public crying. E. Yet human beings weren’t designed to swallow their emotions. F. This isn’t just a social expectation; it’s a scientific fact. Ⅳ.Grammar Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. 48. ________ doesn’t matter what you wear, as long as you look neat and tidy. Change allows us to adapt to new circumstances and to learn from our experiences, which in turn enriches our lives. Living in a world that is constantly evolving, we must be willing to change in order to keep pace with technological advancements and societal shifts. For instance, the rapid development of technology has made it necessary for us to update our skills continuously. Without embracing change, we risk becoming obsolete in a competitive job market. Moreover, personal growth often comes from stepping out of our comfort zones and trying new things, which requires a willingness to change. In conclusion, while change can be challenging, it is a crucial catalyst for progress. It is through change that we can discover our full potential and contribute positively to the world around us.
