第二部分 阅读理解(共两节,共34分)
第一节(共12小题;每小题2分,共24分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
Two years ago, fueled by my envy (羡慕) for those with gardens, I signed up for a plot (小块土地), a place where I could read and write in the sun, safe from distractions. A few months ago, I was presented a half-plot of available land. The plot, which was bigger than I could dream of, was beautiful but overgrown — getting it started would require hard work. I wasn’t sure I had it in me.
Fast forward to now. After seeking guidance from my family and watching beginners’ gardening videos, I spend hours a week sowing, weeding, watering and harvesting. My summer at the plot has so far offered countless lessons, but the most important one has been learning more about how food actually grows. Take the humble cauliflower — a common sight in the supermarket, yet it demands patient tending for up to six months, all for a short moment on the plate. Seasonality has also taken on a new meaning. I knew that all fresh food has its “season” but it was only when I was overwhelmed (应接不暇) by an endless supply of courgettes (小胡瓜) that I really understood I could be eating them for months.
Yet plentiful harvests come with a lesson in impermanence. Fresh produce goes off quickly once ripened (成熟) and picked. And so I’ve turned to the old craft of preservation — learning what to boil and freeze, or make into jam — to make things last. When the harvest has been more than I can manage, I’ve shared the abundance with friends and family, spreading the joy.
As I continue to tend my plot, I do so with a sense of humility, wonder and excitement. What started as a wish for a small patch of green has grown into something much more significant — a connection to my local environment, a respect for the food I eat and an awareness of the fragile natural systems that sustain us. In the beginning, I was worried I would fail the plot; instead, I’m finding myself growing alongside it.
21. How did the author feel when getting the plot?
A. Proud but anxious. B. Amazed but worried.
C. Grateful but puzzled. D. Moved but disappointed.
22. While working on the plot, the author learned to ______.
A. respect laws of nature D forget worries of life
C. identify common plants D create seasonal dishes
23. What does the underlined word “impermanence” in paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. The state of being plentiful.
B. The feature of being seasonal.
C. The quality of being short-lived.
D. The condition of being easily preserved.
24. What does the author’s experience tell us?
A. Labor is the most reliable wealth.
B. Every season brings its own lessons.
C. One should stay hungry for constant progress.
D. The land is improved and so is the one who tends it.
B
Knowing how to read, write and talk in one language is enough for many people. They prefer to focus their energy on other things that improve their lives. Scientists, however, continue to confirm that bilingualism, the ability to speak two languages fluently, has more benefits than many realize.
First, it’s good for a child’s brain. Learning a second language improves their academic achievements. Many studies have shown that children who learn a foreign language get better grades at school. Bilingual children also display a better ability in their native language. Their grammar, vocabulary and spelling skills are stronger than those of single-language speakers. Children who learn a second language become expert problem-solvers and creative thinkers. That’s because their brains are constantly working to sort out which language to speak and when. Studies further show that bilingual teens are better at multitasking.
Multilingual parents understand the benefits of learning more than one language. Ben Mazor of Montreal speaks English, French and Hebrew. He says, “Kids’ brains are like a sponge (海绵). They absorb everything. It comes to them so easily while they’re young. So why not give them the chance to learn another language?”
A number of studies show that bilingualism is valuable to the brain later in life. Scottish researchers did a study using data from 835 native English speakers, who took an IQ test at the age of 11. They were tested again in their 70s. Researchers then compared the tests. Those who spoke two or more languages had obviously better cognitive (认知的) abilities. Dr. Thomas Baka, co-author of the study, concluded, “Our results suggest a protective effect of bilingualism against age-related cognitive decline.”
So, who would refuse the benefits of learning a second language?
25. Why are bilingual kids creative thinkers?
A. They get higher school grades. B. They finish many tasks together.
C. They master native grammar well. D. They choose languages all the time.
26. According to paragraph 3, what may parents like Ben Mazor do?
A. Learn foreign languages by themselves.
B. Spend more money on home schooling.
C. Involve kids in foreign language courses.
D. Help kids absorb knowledge like a sponge.
27. What has the Scottish researchers proved about bilingualism?
A. It extends one’s life. B. It slows mental ageing.
C. It cures brain disorders. D. It improves test scores.
28. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Learning Betters Human Brain B. Language Opens a New World to Kids
C. Bilingualism Shows Great Advantages D. Bilingualism Leads to Academic Success
C
Eating herbs and spices could be the key to preventing mosquitoes from biting, a study suggests. Experts from Johns Hopkins University set up a complicated trial in a testing field in Zambia to find out which people are most attractive to mosquitoes.
In one experiment the team asked six people to sleep in single-person tents which had a pipe pumping (抽送) out the nightly smell of the occupant onto a monitored mosquito landing platform. They found that the mosquitoes were consistently drawn to the smells of people giving off more carboxylic acids (羧酸), but were beaten back by a person who had raised levels of eucalyptol (桉树精油). Eucalyptol, a fragrant component of many plants, is a common ingredient (成分) in toothpaste and mouthwash. Dr. Conor McMeniman, assistant professor at Johns Hopkins University, said, “Our study reflects that high levels of eucalyptol in your body scent may make you less attractive to mosquitoes.”
Interestingly, all humans whose body scent analyzed in this study seemed to send out some eucalyptol. However, the person that was least attractive to mosquitoes had higher amounts of the chemical. This person likely obtained this compound from plant-based foods in their diet; but it is also possible that it could also have been from external products as eucalyptol is also a common ingredient in toothpaste and mouthwash. Experts think that as well as producing a strong unpleasant smell, eucalyptol may also act as a deodorizing agent (除臭剂) which masks the other chemicals that attract mosquitoes.
“Most studies of mosquito preference have been performed in laboratory settings that do not represent how the insects act in the wild,” Dr. McMeniman said. Each night, the researchers released 200 hungry mosquitoes into the field and monitored their activity using motion cameras. Dr. McMeniman said, “To definitively conclude that high levels of eucalyptol in one’s diet would drive mosquitoes away, it would require a clinical trial with larger numbers of human volunteers which we didn’t perform here.”
29. What does Johns Hopkins University’s experiment focus on?
A. Mosquitoes’ preference for humans’ body smell.
B. Effects of different chemicals on people’s energy.
C. Significance of tents in keeping mosquitoes away.
D. Links between men’s sleep-patterns and mosquitoes.
30. What is stressed about eucalyptol in paragraph 3?
A. Its features. B. Its application. C. Its function. D. Its ingredients.
31. What can be inferred about the people least attractive to mosquitoes?
A. They may have prepared toilet water.
B. They may have applied heavy make-up.
C. They may have bought a deodorizing agent.
D. They may have used products with eucalyptol.
32. What does Dr. McMeniman imply in the last paragraph?
A. The number of wild mosquitoes is ignored.
B. Lab studies are limited to mosquitoes’ range.
C. The role of eucalyptol intake needs further evidence.
D. Previous experiments don’t agree with current findings.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项。
As students face heavy study tasks and frequent exams, many struggle with complex learning psychology. Some feel stressed easily, while others often delay their study plans and then blame themselves. 33 Instead of ignoring these feelings, learning to deal with them properly is the key to better study efficiency.
A common psychological problem among students is exam anxiety. When exams are coming, many students feel nervous, can’t sleep well or even fail to focus on review. 34 Deep breathing, positive self-talk and reasonable review schedules can help calm their nerves and build confidence.
35 Some students often put off homework or revision until the last minute, even though they know it will lead to more pressure. The root of this problem is usually the fear of failure or the absence of clear study goals, rather than pure laziness. Realizing this can help students stop blaming themselves and solve the problem positively.
Having no learning motivation is another troubling mental state. Some students feel bored with study and don’t know why they should keep working hard. 36 Setting small, achievable goals and rewarding themselves for finishing tasks can gradually bring back their passion for learning.
37 Students should accept their emotions and turn to teachers, parents or friends for help when necessary. By adjusting their mindset properly, they can improve not only their grades but also their mental health.
A. It is unwise to stay up late for exam review.
B. Another widespread problem is academic delay.
C. These mental troubles are actually very common.
D. But there are simple ways to overcome this anxiety.
E. Most students prefer to solve problems by themselves.
F. In fact, dealing with study psychology is not that difficult.
G. This is because they have lost their sense of achievement in study.
