Then I met Mr. Henderson’s golden retriever (金毛巡回犬), Monty, and the four-page, single-spaced instruction sheet that came with him. “He thinks his real name is ‘What do you have in your mouth?’” it read. “So please check frequently, or you will end up spending the night with Monty in the Emergency Room.” I laughed at first. But within an hour, I found myself Googling whether dogs could digest socks. This was my introduction to what pet-care professionals call “eccentric enrichment instructions.” Over the next six months, I collected them like souvenirs. Mrs. Chen’s cat needed its food microwaved for exactly eleven seconds or it would attack. The Goldstein family’s bulldog required Frank Sinatra playing to perform basic bodily functions. “My boy will not get out of bed unless you say ‘Good morning, Mr. President,’” read another note. Initially, I judged these owners. “Their instructions are as complicated as a Tesla owner’s manual (手册),” I complained to fellow sitter Kii Cash, who once had to lock up kitchen knives because a cat might pick one up and attempt to stab (刺) her. But Nancy Gee, who directs the Center for Human-Animal Interaction, changed my perspective. “Animals cannot grasp the concept of time,” she explained, “A quick trip to the store feels like abandonment.” Those detailed instructions aren’t nonsense — they’re love translated into actionable steps. A 2023 Pew study confirmed her point: 51% of U.S. pet owners say their pets are as much family as any human member. When people name those they trust most, pets often rank closer than friends. These eccentrics are how we care for the one nonjudgmental being that loves us unconditionally. Now when I read “Jasper cannot be trusted. Good luck,” I don’t see a warning. I see a love letter. 4. What does the description of Monty’s instruction sheet in paragraph 1 imply? A. Monty had been rejected by previous pet sitters. B. The author was poorly prepared for her new job. C. The present pet-sitting industry has strict regulations. D. The owner was deeply concerned about his pet’s care. 5. What does the underlined word “eccentric” in paragraph 2 mean? A. Unnecessary. B. Unusual. C. Unpleasant. D. Unclear. 6. Why do pet owners leave such detailed care instructions according to Nancy? A. To impress the pet sitters. B. For fear of paying medical bills. C. To avoid pets feeling abandoned. D. For lack of trust in the pet sitters. 7. What message does the author intend to convey through the text? A. Every dog has its day. B. Patience is a virtue in any job. C. Knowledge is power in odd cases. D. Love comes in all shapes and sizes. D 5. B 6. C 7. 根据第一段“Then I met Mr. Henderson’s golden retriever (金毛巡回犬), Monty, and the four-page, single-spaced instruction sheet that came with him. (后来我遇到了Henderson先生的金毛巡回犬Monty,以及他随身带来的四页单倍行距的说明书。)”以及“So please check frequently, or you will end up spending the night with Monty in the Emergency Room. (所以请经常检查一下,否则你可能会在急诊室和Monty共度一晚。)”可知,主人写下极其细致的叮嘱,体现出主人十分牵挂、担忧自家宠物的照料状况。 【5题详解】 词句猜测题。根据第二段“This was my introduction to what pet-care professionals call “eccentric enrichment instructions.” (这是我第一次接触到宠物护理专业人士所说的“____丰富化指令。”)”以及“Mrs. 根据第三段““Animals cannot grasp the concept of time,” she explained, “A quick trip to the store feels like abandonment.” C The Internet opened up a range of reading shortcuts. For instance, Blinkist is an app-based subscription service that condenses (压缩) mostly nonfiction books into about 15-minute summaries that are available in both audio and text. But generative AI takes such workarounds to new heights. AI-driven apps like Books AI provide summaries and analyses that used to be crafted by humans. Meanwhile, Books AI chat invites you to “chat” with books. In neither case do you need to read the books yourself. Yet this convenience makes us question the very purpose of reading. Why read in the first place? The reasons are endless, as are the streams of books and websites making the case. There’s reading for pleasure, stress reduction, learning, and personal development. You can find correlations between reading and happiness, longevity (长寿), brain growth in children, and even the slowing of cognitive decline. This last issue is particularly relevant as people increasingly let AI do cognitive work on their behalf, a process known as cognitive offloading. Research has emerged showing the extent to which people are engaging in cognitive offloading when they use AI. The evidence reveals that the more users rely on AI to perform work for them, the less they see themselves as drawing upon their own thinking capacities. It’s too soon to know what effects AI might have on our long-term ability to think for ourselves. What’s more, the research so far has largely focused on writing tasks or general use of AI tools, not on reading. But if we lose practice in reading, analyzing, and developing our own interpretations, those skills are at risk of weakening. Cognitive skills aren’t the only thing at risk when we rely too heavily on AI to do our reading work for us. We also miss out on so much of what makes reading enjoyable — encountering a moving piece of dialogue, enjoying a turn of phrase, and connecting with a character. AI’s lure (诱惑) of efficiency is appealing. But it risks weakening the benefits of literacy What can we learn about AI-driven reading tools? A. They are mainly targeted at nonfiction readers. B. They have replaced traditional reading methods. C. They enable users to read books more efficiently. D. They have made book summaries accessible to all. 9. What is the author’s concern about cognitive offloading? A. It may harm human thinking abilities. B. It may result in reduced AI dependency. C. It may have a negative impact on concentration. D. It may weaken confidence in personal reasoning skills. 10. What does the author think of AI’s role in reading? A. It is a bitter pill. B. It is a mind-opener. C. It is a mixed blessing. D. It is a game-changer. 11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text? A. To provide guidance on using AI for reading. B. To warn against the overuse of AI in reading. C. To compare different reading shortcuts offered by AI. D. To assess the effectiveness of AI-driven reading apps. C 9. A 10. C 11. 根据第一段“AI-driven apps like Books AI provide summaries and analyses that used to be crafted by humans. Meanwhile, Books AI chat invites you to “chat” with books. In neither case do you need to read the books yourself. (像Books AI这样的AI驱动应用,能够提供过去由人类撰写的摘要和分析。与此同时,Books AI的聊天功能邀请你与书籍“对话”。这两种情况下你都不需要亲自阅读原书。)”可知,AI阅读工具能够帮助用户更高效地处理书籍内容,提升阅读效率。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“But if we lose practice in reading, analyzing, and developing our own interpretations, those skills are at risk of weakening. (然而,如果我们丧失了阅读、分析和独立形成见解的练习,这些能力就有可能逐渐退化。)”可知,作者担忧认知外包会损害人类自主思考能力。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据最后一段“AI’s lure (诱惑) of efficiency is appealing. But it risks weakening the benefits of literacy D We desperately need clean hydrogen for industries that cannot run on renewable electricity. It might be possible to generate vast amounts from deep rocks while locking away CO₂. Researchers at the University of Texas at Austin have shown this works in lab studies. “We hope to generate hydrogen economically while locking away CO₂,” says Olga Gleinetser. Hydrogen burns clean, so it could help make fertiliser and steel-making cleaner. However, almost all hydrogen is now made from fossil fuels, and green production requires huge amounts of renewable energy like wind or solar power, which is too costly. Meanwhile, natural hydrogen, though cheap and clean, is limited in scale and production rates. This has led to growing interest in stimulated hydrogen production — actively generating hydrogen from rocks. One method is pumping water underground. Water reacts with iron-rich rocks via serpentinisation (蛇纹石化), which is a source of a lot of natural hydrogen. Gleinetser realized that adding CO₂ to the water makes it react with rocks and get locked away as carbonates (碳酸盐). A company called Carbfix is already turning CO₂ into minerals this way in Iceland. In lab tests, iron-rich volcanic rock was first heated to 90°C in sealed containers under high pressure, and then CO₂-rich water was added. Compared with water added with other gases such as argon (氩气), the CO₂-rich water released more hydrogen, probably because carbonic acid broke down rock and allowed more reaction. The researchers were able to release about 0.5% of the hydrogen which was theoretically possible to obtain from reacting water with the rock. But they think 1% is needed for workability. A promising way is to go deeper underground, where higher temperatures enhance serpentinisation. Globally, there are huge volumes of iron-rich rock, which could yield far more hydrogen than the 100 million tonnes currently produced. “There is growing interest in combining stimulated hydrogen production with CO₂ mineralisation,” says Alaksiei Patapcia at the University of Oxford. “Many groups and start-ups are exploring this concept.” 12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text? A. By quoting a leading researcher. B. By presenting an urgent demand. C. By defining a new type of clean energy. D. By comparing different energy sources. 13. What can we know about stimulated hydrogen production? A. It is cheaper than solar power. B. It requires much renewable energy. C. It generates hydrogen from fossil fuels. D. It produces clean hydrogen and stores CO₂. 14. What was found to increase hydrogen production in the lab experiments? A. Adding CO₂ to the water. B. Using argon instead of CO₂. C. Lowering the temperature of the rock. D. Reducing the water pressure in containers. 15. What is Alaksiei’s attitude towards stimulated hydrogen production? A. Doubtful. B. Cautious. C. Unclear. D. Favorable. B 13. D 14. A 15. 根据第一段“We desperately need clean hydrogen for industries that cannot run on renewable electricity. (我们迫切需要清洁氢能供给无法依靠可再生电力运转的工业)”可知,作者通过提出行业迫切需求引出文章主题。 【13题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“It might be possible to generate vast amounts from deep rocks while locking away CO₂. (通过从深层岩石中提取大量氢气并同时封存二氧化碳,这一目标或许有望实现)”以及第三段“Gleinetser realized that adding CO₂ to the water makes it react with rocks and get locked away as carbonates (碳酸盐). (Gleinetser发现,向水中加入二氧化碳后,水会与岩石反应并被固定为碳酸盐)”可知,刺激式制氢技术既能产出清洁氢气,还可封存二氧化碳。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段“Compared with water added with other gases such as argon (氩气), the CO₂-rich water released more hydrogen (与混入氩气等其他气体的水相比,富含二氧化碳的水能析出更多氢气)”可知,向水中添加二氧化碳能够提升氢气产出量。 根据最后一段“There is growing interest in combining stimulated hydrogen production with CO₂ mineralisation (人们越来越关注制氢结合二氧化碳矿化技术)”以及“Many groups and start-ups are exploring this concept. (许多研究团队和初创企业正在探索这一概念)”可知,Alaksiei对这项技术持支持、看好的态度。 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 I have worked in the tour guide business in Egypt for one year, and I believe it will be one of the greatest experiences of my life. Although the job required long and irregular hours, it was pleasant living along the river Nile. ____16____ Life as a tour guide was full of challenges. ____17____ What was scheduled as a short tour could quickly turn into a long, exhausting stretch from morning to night, especially when unexpected delays or last-minute changes occurred. Sometimes I had to wait at the airport for hours because of flight delays or missing group members. ____18____ It took strong interpersonal skills to do it well. Even though dealing with late drivers, difficult clients, and last-minute bookings could be stressful, I always kept going with a smile because I knew most of my guests appreciated and valued what I did. No matter how demanding some clients could be, I always reminded myself that they had likely invested a lot in making this trip to Egypt happen, so I made it my goal to ensure their experience was truly worth it. ____19____ I would give my cell phone number to my clients and encourage them to call me in case they had any difficulties or would like to arrange something special. ____20____ I had some free time in Egypt, which allowed me to explore the country from top to bottom on my own. I was given heavily reduced hotel rates, and was able to see Egypt at my own pace with two five-day vacations over the year. A. This job came with an added bonus. B. My tour groups were usually about 15 to 30 visitors. C. The tour guide business required a high level of confidence. D. It was also wonderful to meet people from various cultures. E. These challenges often arose from the unpredictability of travel. F. Nothing made me prouder than helping make their experience enjoyable. G. If we choose a major we truly like, we will be more willing to spend time and energy learning it. Even when we meet difficulties, interest can give us the motivation to keep going. Besides, a major based on personal interest can help us develop our strengths and enjoy our future work. Of course, parents’ advice and social needs are also worth considering, because they may help us make a wiser choice. In my opinion, only by following our interest can we study with passion and achieve long-term success. Possible version two: The Most Important Factor in Choosing a Major In my view, social needs should be considered first when we choose a major. A university major is closely connected with our future career. If what we learn meets the needs of society, we may find a suitable job after graduation. For example, majors related to technology, medicine and education are becoming increasingly important today. Choosing such majors can not only help us realize our own value but also allow us to make contributions to society. Although personal interest and parents’ advice are important, we should not ignore real social development. Therefore, considering social needs can help us better prepare for the future. 词汇积累 相信:believe → be convinced 重要的:important → crucial 遇到:meet → encounter 热情:passion → enthusiasm 2. Besides, a major based on personal interest can help us develop our strengths and enjoy our future work. Besides, a major which is based on personal interest can help us not only develop our strengths but also enjoy our future work. 1】When choosing a major, I believe personal interest is the most important factor. At ten, she nearly drowned at a beach vacation, and since then, even bathtubs made her nervous. So when West High announced that every junior had to pass a 200-meter swim test to graduate, she felt the old panic rise in her chest like floodwater. She had failed twice already. The first time, she froze at the deep end, her fingers holding the lane rope, unable to move. The second time, she made it to 120 meters before her legs cramped (抽筋) and she had to be pulled out, coughing and ashamed. This was her final chance — the last lap, in every sense. “You don’t need to be fast,” her best friend Sarah kept saying, adjusting the red string bracelet (手链) on Maya’s wrist. “You just need to finish.” Maya touched the bracelet. Her grandmother had tied it on before they moved, murmuring that it would keep her safe near water. She wished she believed in that kind of magic. Mr. Liu, the PE teacher, bent down by the starting block. He never shouted or pressured. At her second failure, he simply said, “The test isn’t about swimming. It’s about not giving up.” Those words had become her wallpaper, her lock screen, her midnight reminder. When her turn came, Maya lowered herself into the pool. The shallow end felt manageable. She pushed off, counting strokes (划水动作) to keep her mind from falling into fear. Twenty meters. Forty. Her arms moved in awkward rhythm, nothing elegant, purely functional. At sixty meters, the depth dropped to two meters, and the water beneath her turned dark blue. She forced her eyes to stay on the lane divider. One hundred meters. Her shoulders burned. One-twenty — where she had failed before. She kept going. One-forty. Her breath became increasingly heavy, each intake half water, half air. The sounds of the pool faded. She heard only her heart, pounding against her chest like someone demanding to be let in. Paragraph 1: At the 150-meter mark, her legs felt like they were made of stone. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Paragraph 2: With one last effort, she reached the finish wall. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】参考答案: Paragraph 1: At the 150-meter mark, her legs felt like they were made of stone. Exhaustion set in as panic seized her, the dark water below threatening to swallow her whole. Never before had she felt so close to defeat. It was then that her fingers brushed the red bracelet, whose warmth reminded her of what Mr. Liu had told her. Gripping the lane divider, Maya felt fear slowly give way to determination, her arms moving in mechanical rhythm. Her vision blurred, but the lane rope guided her forward. She wasn’t swimming anymore; she was fighting. Paragraph 2: With one last effort, she reached the finish wall. She gasped for air, coughing up water as well as exhaustion. Maya pulled herself onto the deck and looked back at the blue lane, still unable to believe she had crossed it. Overwhelmed by relief, she touched the red bracelet, realizing that six years of terror had melted away in eight minutes of refusal to quit. What defined her victory was not the distance conquered, but the courage discovered within herself. As it turned out, some magic isn’t in the string itself, but in the hands that tied it and the heart that believes. 词汇激活 行为类 ①紧握:grip/clasp tightly/clutch firmly ②喘息吸气:gasp for air/pant pant for breath 情绪类 ①惊慌失措:panic seize sb./be overcome with terror ②如释重负:sb. be overwhelmed by relief/a sense of relief washes over sb. 1】It was then that her fingers brushed the red bracelet, whose warmth reminded her of what Mr. Liu had told her. B When I started pet-sitting, I thought I had prepared for everything. C The Internet opened up a range of reading shortcuts. D We desperately need clean hydrogen for industries that cannot run on renewable electricity. B. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
