Dear Leo,
I’m sorry to hear about your trouble and I totally understand how you feel. Your parents are just worried about your study and safety, but I think being a volunteer is a great idea.
Volunteering has many advantages. First, helping the elderly can teach you responsibility and kindness, which will make you grow a lot. Also, talking with the old people is very meaningful, and you can learn a lot from their life stories. Of course, it’s true that it might take some time, and safety is really important.
Here are some suggestions for you. You can talk to your parents first, telling them you will finish your homework first and only go with other volunteers. You can also promise to text them when you arrive and leave, so they won’t worry about your safety. I’m sure they will understand if you communicate with them patiently.
Cheer up! Everything will work out fine.
Yours,
Li Jin

I still clearly remember my first time working as a team leader five years ago. Back then, I was young and inexperienced, and felt unsure about handling daily work. Our small company was going through a hard time, and many clients were not satisfied with our work results.
One day, my manager called me into his office. He told me straightly that our biggest cooperation deal was at risk of being cancelled. If things went on like this, the whole team might not keep running. He gently advised me to prepare for other job choices in advance.
Days later, more workmates left the team one by one. Client complaints kept coming in, and everyone around me looked worried and helpless. I also felt upset and lost heart for a moment.
To cheer myself up, I spent my weekend watching an encouraging movie. The main character met repeated failures but never gave up his dream. He kept trying and finally achieved success. This story touched me deeply. I made up my mind that I would not give up easily either.
On Monday morning, I took action right away. I talked face to face with every client patiently, apologized for our shortcomings and promised to improve all problems within a month. To my relief, they agreed to give us this valuable chance.
From that day on, I worked side by side with my teammates. We devoted plenty of time to adjusting work plans and improving service quality. We tried our best to fix every problem carefully.
Finally, we managed to win back clients’ trust completely. Our team got through the difficult period smoothly, and we even received extra rewards for our efforts.
This special experience teaches me a meaningful truth. No matter how hard the situation is, staying positive and holding on to hard work will finally bring us good results.

B. The major business deal might break down.

D. Many workmates refused to cooperate with him.
57. What made the author pick up confidence again?
A. Comfort from his workmates. B. Useful advice of the manager.
C. The inspiring story in a movie. D. The understanding from clients.
58. What was the company’s situation in the hard time?
A. It lost all its old customers completely. B. Some staff chose to leave the team.
C. It refused to correct existing mistakes. D. It had no way to improve service.
59. What can we learn from the author’s experience?
A. Failure is unavoidable in every person’s career.
B. Communication is the only way to win others’ trust.
C. Changing jobs timely is a wise choice for development.
D. Positive attitude and hard work help overcome difficulties.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A. An unforgettable tough work experience B. How to become an excellent manager
C. Ways to win support from customers D. A meaningful weekend movie time

Train travel is enjoying a booming renaissance (复兴) across Europe and North America as more people turn to greener and more reliable public transport. A recent survey of 11,000 people conducted by the famous rail company Hitachi Rail shows clear changes in people’s travel habits. Nearly half of the surveyed people plan to travel more by train and less by plane over the next five years.
The new research found that citizens in European and North American countries expect train travel to increase significantly in the coming years at the cost of flying. At present, rail travel already accounts for around 30% of long-distance journeys, which usually last 2.5 hours or even longer. Besides, one-third of the surveyed people say they are prepared to choose train trips more often within the next 12 months.
The data also shows a clear difference between general areas and cities. In the following five years, 40% of people nationwide will prefer trains, while the figure rises to 49% in cities. On the contrary, plane travel is set to stagnate. Only about 2% of participants intend to take more flights during the same period.
Most people welcome the trend of railway development. A total of 62% of the surveyed people support new rules to ban short flights when high-speed rail services are available. In Europe, where high-speed rail routes are rapidly expanding, the support rate reaches 67%. Most locals agree to fund new rail infrastructure by raising air and road taxes.
However, public transport still faces obvious drawbacks. Passengers point out that crowding, affordable pricing and poor overall convenience remain the biggest challenges. Research results also indicate that over 70% of people will use public transport more if transport systems are better connected, and more than half are willing to accept higher fares for improved service quality.
61. What can we learn from the survey?
A. Most people plan to take planes more often in later days.
B. One third of people will cut down train travel next year.
C. Nearly thirty percent of long trips are finished by train now.
D. 49% of people nationwide will choose trains within five years.
62. What does the underlined word “stagnate” mean?
A. stop growing B. develop rapidly C. become popular D. disappear completely
63. Why do plenty of people support forbidding short flights?
A. To lower the spending on building airports. B. To solve serious road traffic problems.
C. To speed up the operation of all flights. D. To push forward the development of rail travel.
64. Which of the following is seen as a big trouble of public transport?
A. Lack of drivers. B. Serious pollution.
C. Overall inconvenience. D. Limited travel time.
65. What is the main idea of the text?
A. High-speed rail lines are built everywhere in North America.
B. Short flights have been totally forbidden in Europe.
C. Train travel is gaining greater popularity over flights.
D. Public transport has little room for future development

In 2013, Alfie Ward’s life was falling apart. A lot of bad things happened: she broke up with her partner, her father was seriously ill, and she didn’t like her job anymore.
At that time, Ward lived in Los Angeles. To forget her troubles, she liked to go hiking and take photos of insects. Sometimes, if she really liked an insect, she would post the photo on social media. These photos caught the eye of Lila Higgins, an insect expert at the local natural history museum. Higgins invited Ward to visit the museum’s insectary, a place where they keep live insects.
“Most people don’t think this is a fun invitation, but for me, it was great. I loved insects when I was a kid. I really wanted to see some insects,” Ward said.
When Ward got to the museum, Higgins greeted her at the back door. She gave Ward a lab coat and showed her around the exhibits. For the first time in a long time, Ward felt happy. Higgins saw her love for insects and asked her to volunteer at the museum for a few hours every week.
At first, Ward wasn’t sure, but she decided to try. Every Wednesday, she went to the museum. With each volunteer job, she felt better. “It gave me a goal. It helped me get back to my love of science and nature,” Ward said.
Soon, Ward stepped down from her old job and started working in science media. Now she has her own podcast (播客) called Ologies. Higgins was her first guest. “She changed my life. Because of her, I found my old love and did what I really want to do,” Ward said.
