It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration (懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.”
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
→David, a student with brain disease, prepared himself for the big cross-country run at school.
→On the spot of the event, David was ready to give up the race.
→The author searched the crowd for the school coach.
→The author finally found out the reason why David wanted to give up and found David approaching him.
David:
(David had not missed a single practice; his usual toothy smile)
(David was standing by himself off to the side by fence; I turned to find him coming towards me.)
Author:
(I looked around and finally spotted David.)
(I bit back my frustration.)
(I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach.)

Passage 1
When Dr. Henderson was assigning project mates for his psychology class, I secretly hoped he would pair me with my best friend or at least a classmate I could have some fun with. Above all, I hoped he wouldn’t assign me to work with the fiercely (激烈的) competitive and extremely serious fellow who always wore dark clothes and apparently had a personality to match. As fate (命运) would have it, Dr. Henderson very purposely matched everyone in class and announced that I would be working with the one person in class I wanted to avoid.
I went up to my new teammate and introduced myself. He looked at me as though I weren’t there. I felt he treated me as though I would hold him back and probably make him fail to get an A in the course. He wasn’t mean or abusive; he just gave me the impression he could do whatever project we dreamed up better if he did it alone.
Needless to say, I didn’t look forward to an entire term of being brushed off, but I tried to make the best of it and didn’t say anything for fear that I would make things worse.
The project required each team to develop a hypothesis (假说), set up an experiment to test the hypothesis, do the statistical analysis and present the findings. Whatever grade the team received would be shared by both students.
When my teammate and I met to discuss our object, I was uneasy. Here was this challenging student who had a reputation for single-mindedness and good grades—the exact opposite of me. I usually wanted to drop the class at one point, but stopped short because I didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of my chickening out. I decided to stick to it no matter what.
After long discussions we somehow agreed to do a study on the psychological well-being of teenagers. I wasn’t sure what it meant exactly, but at least we had a topic.
注意:
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.
根据续写第二段开头“One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.” 续写的第一段的开头内容为 “We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.”,针对这一内容可以提出的“四问”如下:
Q1: What did I want?
Q2: What did I do?
Q3: How did I feel?
Q4: How did we feel?
Q1: What did I do?
Q2: What did he do?
Q3: What did Dr. Henderson do?
Q4: How did the story end up? What did the author hope to convey in the story?
Paragraph 1: We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans.
→ 1. I just hoped that the presentation day could come earlier.
→ 2. I started to wait to leave immediately.
→ 3. I just kept nodding when he asked me something, refusing to discuss.
→ 4. I wanted to share ideas but I feared I would hold him back.
Paragraph 2: One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease.
→ 1. Finally, my hard work paid off—we were awarded an A, which gave me great satisfaction. I earned my teammate’s recognition and we have become good friend since then.
→ 2. I offered to do the rest work of our project and he invited me to share my ideas to perfect it. Dr. Henderson was very satisfied.
→ 3. He was a little surprised to see me when I stepped into his ward with some flowers and fruits.
→ 4. I felt so sorry to hear that and I thought I should visit him in any case.
Passage 2
The Meredith family lived in a small community. As the economy was in decline, some people in the town had lost their jobs. Many of their families were struggling to make ends meet. People were trying to help each other meet the challenges.
Mrs. Meredith was a most kind and thoughtful woman. She spent a great deal of time visiting the poor. She knew they had problems, and they needed all kinds of help. When she had time, she would bring food and medicine to them.
One morning she told her children about a family she had visited the day before. There was a man sick in bed, his wife, who took care of him and could not go out to work, and their little boy. The little boy — his name was Bernard — had interested her very much.
“I wish you could see him,” she said to her own children, John, Harry, and Clara. “He is such a help to his mother. He wants very much to earn some money, but I don't see what he can do.”
After their mother left the room, the children sat thinking about Bernard. “I wish we could help him to earn money,” said Clara. “His family is suffering so much.”
“So do I,” said Harry. “We really should do something to assist them.”
For some moments, John said nothing, but, suddenly, he sprang to his feet and cried, “I have a great idea! I have a solution that we can all help accomplish (完成).”
The other children also jumped up all attention. When John had an idea, it was sure to be a good one. “I tell you what we can do,” said John. “You know that big box of corn Uncle John sent us? Well, we can make popcorn (爆米花), and put it into paper bags, and Bernard can take it around to the houses and sell it.”
注意:
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.

Passage 1
Born and raised in California, Kenneth’s world was shaped by the state’s sunshine, its beaches, and the friends he’d kept since kindergarten (幼儿园). At 16, however, life took a big turn. His parents found new jobs in Ohio, forcing the whole family to move there. This wasn’t an easy choice — it was tough to leave behind every familiar thing he cared about.
Along with the move, a new school was waiting for Kenneth. Every time he thought about saying goodbye to his old school, a sense of sadness came over him. The changes ahead — like the new city, the new school, and the strangers he’d soon meet — filled him with fear. He had no idea if he’d be able to fit in, or if loneliness would find him once he got there.
Following a long cross-country journey, the family finally arrived in Ohio and settled down. When the day came for him to start at his new school, Kenneth’s mind swarmed with worries. What if the other students were unfriendly — even cold? And what if he couldn’t make a single friend there?
The next morning, Kenneth was driven to school by his parents. The car stopped at the big brick building, and his heart beat fast. He hugged his mom and dad, took a deep breath, and got out. He anxiously walked toward the school gate with every step. It felt like he was stepping into a new world.
A friendly school secretary went to greet Kenneth when he entered. Noticing how nervous and shy he looked, she decided to start by showing him around the school yard. She led him past a modern computer lab, a science lab, and a gym with a basketball court — there, Kenneth imagined trying out for the school team. His mood lifted a little. Kenneth began to think the school was nice, and he started feeling a little better.
Finally, they arrived at the teaching building and walked toward Kenneth’s new classroom, and Kenneth’s heart started to race again. The school secretary took him to the door with an encouraging smile.

Passage 2
When I first entered senior high school, I felt lost. Everyone seemed to know where they belonged-Science Club, Art Club, or Psychology Club. After classes, I walked around, unsure of what to join, until I passed the table tennis room one afternoon. Inside, some classmates were practicing quick and light rallies Daniel, the captain, played with calm confidence, while Jane, known for her fast reactions, laughed as she sent the ball across the table. The energy in the room pulled me in. Maybe this was the place I had been looking for.
The next day, I gathered my courage and asked Daniel if I, a green hand, could join. He smiled and said the team welcomed anyone who wanted to learn. Jane gave me a spare paddle (乒乓球拍) and showed me the basic ways to hold it. At first, I was terrible. My returns flew off the table, and I couldn’t control the ball at all. But no one laughed. Daniel and Jane offered to correct my hand position and footwork. Slowly, I improved, though Daniel sometimes looked at me with a thoughtful expression I couldn’t explain.
As we prepared for a friendly match against another school, our practices became more serious. Daniel often changed his skills, asking us to focus on steady moves and safe returns. Jane practiced with me longer than before, repeating easy moves until I felt tired. Their guidance felt warm, but something else was there too-like they were planning ahead.
A week before the match, Daniel stopped playing in practice games. He said he felt uncomfortable and had to watch us more closely. Although I was an unconfirmed competitor yet, Jane trained me with even more care, checking my moves again and again, as if preparing me for something important. The air in the room felt different - not because something had already gone wrong, but because we all felt something would happen. Still, we trusted Daniel and followed his plans without question.

Passage 3
The final bell of the school year rang, and the classroom erupted in cheers. Everyone was excited about the upcoming summer vacation, but not Tommy. He sat quietly at his desk, staring at the empty chair in the front row— the one where Mrs. Lee used to sit.
Mrs. Lee had been their English teacher for three years. She was kind, patient, and always had a way of making even the most difficult grammar rules seem fun. Beyond the classroom, she had poured her heart into restoring the school’s neglected garden, transforming it into a living learning space called “The Sunflower Corner”. She had encouraged students to plant seeds, tend to the flowers, and find joy in watching life grow. It was Mrs. Lee who had guided Tommy’s hesitant hands to plant his first sunflower, helping him overcome his shyness through the quiet language of gardening. The garden had become her lively lesson in patience and care, touching every student who worked in it.
But a week before, Mrs. Lee had announced she was retiring due to a sudden illness. Tommy was heartbroken. He wanted to give her a special gift to show his gratitude, something that would remind her of the living legacy (遗产) she had planted at school.
He had an idea. Mrs. Lee loved sunflowers, which she often said symbolized hope and growth. Tommy decided to bring her a potted sunflower from the very garden they had tended together. After school, he carefully selected one from “The Sunflower Corner”, its young face following the afternoon light. He then made his way to Mrs. Lee’s home, carrying the plant with gentle determination.
When he arrived, he knocked on the door. A woman who looked like Mrs. Lee answered. “Can I help you?” she asked. Tommy explained that he was a student of Mrs. Lee’s and had a gift for her. “I’m her sister,” the woman said. “She’s resting right now. She’s been very tired lately. But she would be so happy to see you. Come in.”

Passage 4
Mrs. Lee was a math teacher at a famous high school. She loved her job and all her students, but there was one student who stood out to her: Minji. Minji was a quiet girl who always sat in the back of the class. She rarely spoke or participated in discussions, and her grades were poor. Mrs Lee sensed that Minji had a lot of potential, but something was holding her back.
One day, Mrs. Lee decided to talk to Minji after class. She asked her how she was doing and if she needed any help with math. Minji looked down and said she was fine. She said she didn’t like math and she didn’t think she was good at it. Mrs. Lee smiled and said that math was not easy, but it could be fun and useful if she gave it a chance. She offered to tutor Minji after school and help her with her homework. Minji hesitated, but agreed to try.
The next day, Mrs. Lee and Minji met in the library after school. Mrs Lee brought some worksheets and a calculator. She explained the concepts in a simple and clear way, and gave Minji some examples and exercises to practice. She praised Minji for every correct answer and encouraged her to ask questions. Minji felt nervous at first, but gradually relaxed and became more confident. She realized that math was not as hard as she thought, and that Mrs. Lee was a kind and patient teacher.
The tutoring sessions continued for several weeks. Mrs. Lee noticed that Minji’s grades improved significantly, and so did her attitude and participation in class. She also saw that Minji smiled more often and made some friends. Mrs Lee was proud of Minji’s progress and happy to see her blossom.

Passage 1
My name is Emma, an eight-year-old, shy and never very competitive. When I started a new elementary school this year, I decided to join the cross-country team. My dad loves running, but he didn’t push me; he simply smiled and said, “If you want to try, I’ll always be here for you.”
It didn’t go well at first. I struggled to keep up and usually finished last. There was only one other girl on the team, and the new environment made me feel small and awkward. After a few weeks, I asked my parents if I could quit. They agreed, but I could see the worry in Dad’s eyes and felt I had let him down.
Instead of scolding (责骂) me, Dad started inviting me for “easy runs” in the park — no stopwatch, no pressure. Sometimes we jogged, sometimes I rode my bike beside him as we talked. Sometimes when the path got too long, I would whisper to myself, “I’m so tired. Maybe I should just stop. It doesn’t matter.” However, little by little, I stopped saying “I can’t” and began asking, “How far today, Dad?”
In the spring, I surprised even myself by saying that I wanted to try cross-country again. By then I had made friends, and our quiet runs had made running seem less frightening. I was still one of the slower runners, but I could stay on my feet longer in practice.
Yesterday was our end-of-season race. Parents weren’t officially invited, but Dad told me he would try to come. As I stood at the starting line, nervous, I saw him walking across the field and waving. My heart leapt with determination.
The whistle blew and we took off. At the end of the first loop, I realized I was near the front of the pack. When I saw Dad again, he ran alongside me for a few steps, and I asked him to stay with me.
We kept running side by side, the finish line coming into view.

Passage 2
At the age of eighteen, I grew to be a rebellious (叛逆的) person. Usually, my mother asked me to behave in a way that she thought acceptable. However, I often turned a deaf ear to her words.
“This room has become one for pigs!” she angrily said. “Clean it up, or you can’t go out with your friends!” But it looked okay to me. There were only a few clothes and something else on the floor. And it would only take five minutes to pick them up. Why did she have to be always anxious and angry?
Our relationship became worse when Mum began to criticize (批评) me for not listening to her. And I started to think she was too strict and didn’t love me.
A few months before I left for college, one accident made me realize how wrong I was.
“Dear, I don’t want you to drive the car today; it’s going to rain and you might lose control of the car,” she told me early on a spring Saturday morning. My heart sank. I had planned this trip to the shopping centre all week. “She’s naturally anxious again,” I thought.
In my mind, the idea that Mum was unreasonably anxious excused my next action. I secretly walked out of the house and slipped into the car. I slowly drove away from our house. When I lost sight of the house, I drove quickly away from my unreasonably worried Mum. “I’m free!” I thought.
Of course, the chances of having a car accident increase rapidly when you don’t have your mum’s permission (允许) to drive the car in the first place. I didn’t see the dark blue car coming as I turned in front of it in the mall parking lot. Luckily, the dark blue car suffered little damage (损伤) and I only had minor injuries.

Passage 3
I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I would often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day Brian and I wandered into an electronics store. My eyes landed on a cool camera lens (镜头) — its metal body shone under the lights. As the school photographer, I needed it to take better photos for the newspaper. But it cost $50! Just as I leaned in for a closer look, Brian pulled my sleeve, whispering eagerly, “Look! The new adventure game I’ve been waiting for!” However, neither of us had enough pocket money. We left in disappointment.
Several days later, our school had a pumpkin-carving contest. The first prize was $100, and I knew I could use the money to buy the lens. So I decided the first place bonus (奖金) definitely had to land in my pocket.
When it was time to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, I suddenly realized my big, clumsy fingers would surely mess it up. I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands — he was the man for the job. I immediately asked Brian for help. After thinking for a while, he asked for a cut of the prize money, fifty-fifty, as he wanted to buy the game. I figured out that splitting the first prize would still leave me enough for the lens. So, I agreed. With skillful hands, Brian carved a perfect face, and we handed over the pumpkin, firmly believing we would win the first prize.
On the day of the awards ceremony where the results would be announced, Brian was sick with a cold. I had to go to the awards ceremony alone.
However, something unexpected happened: we got second place. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every dollar of that to buy the lens. When the principal gave the money to me, I received it with a heavy heart.

Passage 4
As they sat watching their favorite TV show, Mark’s dad’s trademark cough echoed from the other room. Each time he heard that sound, Mark’s heart sank. He shifted uncomfortably, trying to focus on the screen, but his mind kept returning to the damage the cigarettes were doing to his father’s lungs.
Mark couldn’t understand it. His dad was brilliant and spent quality time with him — why would he risk his health? What if it led to an early death? Had he ever considered how heartbroken it would make him and his mom?
Mark’s mind wandered back to a conversation he had overheard between his parents. His mom had been pleading (恳求) with his dad, her voice full of worry. “You need to think about your health, for Mark’s sake if not for your own,” she had said. But his dad just brushed her off, saying he was too stressed to quit.
One evening, Mark approached his mom to discuss the issue. “I’ve tried to persuade him to quit,” Mark’s mom expressed with a sigh. “But he always gets annoyed whenever I bring up the subject.” She looked tired and defeated. “At least your dad is considerate with his smoking; he never does it indoors or around others. He even changes his clothes to prevent us from smelling the smoke. Despite that, it’s still so hard on him, on us...”
The next day at school, Mark was playing basketball with his classmate Tim on the court. “Hey, does either of your parents smoke?” he asked. “Yeah, my dad smokes, but he’s cut down in the past year,” replied Tim. “Oh, how did he do that?” Mark asked curiously. “I don’t really know what happened. I guess he just realized it was time for a change,” said Tim, as he threw the ball back to Mark. The reply gave Mark a ray of hope — and an idea.

Passage 1
Alex and Ben had been best friends since kindergarten. They shared everything, from snacks to secrets, and especially their passion for photography. Ben had saved up every penny from his allowance for a whole year to buy a professional camera, which quickly became his most prized possession — he even kept it in a soft case and cleaned the lens (镜片) every single day.
One weekend, Alex asked to borrow the camera for a school photography contest. Ben hesitated for a second, his fingers brushing the camera’s case softly, but then he smiled and handed it over, saying sincerely, “Please be careful. It’s my baby.”
Excited beyond words, Alex took the camera on a hiking trip to a remote mountain, determined to get the perfect shot of a hidden waterfall at sunrise. The trail was damp (潮湿的) and muddy after the previous night’s rain. As he climbed a slippery rock to get a better shot, his foot suddenly slipped. He waved his arms and managed to grab a tree branch to save himself, but the camera swung wildly from his hand and crashed against a sharp stone. When he picked it up, his heart sank — the lens was completely broken.
Panic set in instantly. Alex stood frozen on the rock, his hands trembling as he stared at the broken camera. He knew exactly how much this camera meant to Ben. It was more than just a camera; it was the fruit of a year’s worth of patience and hard work. Instead of gathering his courage to tell Ben the truth immediately, Alex chose to run away from the problem. He avoided Ben at school, didn’t answer any of his calls or text messages, and even skipped their usual lunch meetups at the cafeteria, where they used to sit together and talk about their latest photos.

Passage 2
Lily and I had been best friends since primary school — we shared everything, from our favorite snacks to our deepest secrets, and promised to be by each other’s side no matter what happened in our life. So when her 14th birthday rolled around, I spent weeks preparing the perfect gift: a hand-painted notebook, every page with tiny drawings of our valuable memories together, from the time we got lost at the amusement park to the night we stayed up crying over a sad movie. I even wrote a heartfelt letter inside, pouring out how much she meant to me and how thankful I was for our friendship.
On her birthday party, I pushed my way through the crowd, handed her the gift with a big smile, and waited excitedly for her reaction (反应). But to my shock, Lily just took a quick look at the notebook, said a quiet “thanks”, threw it carelessly onto the messy table, and turned to chat with other guests right away without a second look. My heart fell like a stone. Did she hate it that much? Had our friendship really meant so little to her? For the rest of the party, I felt a tight, sad feeling in my throat, hardly said any word, and left early with a broken heart.
After that day, I distanced myself from her — stopping our daily walks to school, ignoring (无视) her texts and calls, and even moving to a back seat in the class to avoid her. Lily tried to talk to me several times, following me down the hallway and leaving notes on my desk, but I still avoided her, too hurt and angry to listen. We grew apart, and our once unbreakable friendship turned into awkward silence.
We didn’t talk for a whole month. During those long, quiet days, I thought about Lily every single day. I kept replaying the happy times we’d shared in my mind, wondering if we could ever go back to being the close friends we used to be.

Passage 3
Due to my unhealthy eating habits, I became fatter and fatter after college. My good friend Anoush was a running enthusiast. So he advised me to lose weight by running. I didn’t agree at first until he promised to accompany me to run although he was busy with his work.
Seven years later, I got more serious about running. And I dreamed to participate in Boston Marathon. Anoush encouraged me to realize my dream. He also said he enjoyed running too and wanted to attend the same marathon with me. Every day we spared our time to practise hard and did about 2 marathons a year, during which time Anoush gave me much professional guidance and encouragement. And then one day, both of us qualified for the 2017 Boston Marathon. We were excited but unfortunately, several weeks before the marathon, we had a serious quarrel. Even I swore never to talk with him in the future.
The day came. Anoush and I stood at the starting line. He said, “Good luck! You will certainly finish the marathon.” Hearing his words, I looked at him, saying, “It’s none of your business.”
Then we started running. I had strong mental confidence by using positive self-talk when running distances, which has helped me finish 18 marathons. Soon, I passed Anoush.
But I struggled in the heat starting at mile 16. I felt most of my oxygen went to the muscle in my legs and less in my brain, which made me feel a bit lightheaded and fuzzy I continually encouraged myself. “Just get to the finish, run bold, and you will win,” all phrases that I say to myself didn’t work any more.
Gradually I felt out of breath and had to slow down my pace. As I ran down the famous last stretch of the Boston Marathon on Boylston Street, I fell down on the ground with my legs moving like jello (果冻).

Passage 4
As a key player on my school’s basketball team, I lived and breathed the game. My best friend David, also my teammate, shared this passion, and we had one hero in common: Stephen Curry. We’d stay late after practice, copying his quick crossovers and long-range shots, chatting about how cool it would be to play like him someday.
Then a big loss hit me hard. It was in the game, which was tied with only 10 seconds left. I got the ball — our team’s last chance to win. But I missed the shot. We lost, and I could see disappointment on my teammates’ faces.
After that, I became a different person. I kept blaming myself, and my confidence totally disappeared. David noticed my struggle right away. He practiced with me alone and wanted to encourage me, “One bad play doesn’t make you a loser.”
I stared at my shoes,” I almost messed it all up. What if I do it again in the championship final?”
David stepped closer, his tone soft but sharp, “Cheer up, Jimmy. Don’t let one failure hold you back. Think about our hero Curry...” He paused, eyes suddenly lighting up like he’d just had a breakthrough, without noticing my whisper “My hero Curry would think I’m a loser too.”
During the training for the championship, I didn’t want to join at all. But when David told me there was a surprise waiting for me in the gym, I hesitated for a moment and finally decided to go check it out.
On stepping into the gym, I noticed the big screen — there was a video from Curry himself — smiling, holding a basketball, saying, “Hey, Jimmy! Mistakes aren’t losses; they’re just lessons waiting to be used. Get back out there, trust your training, and remember: even the best shooters miss. What matters is you take the next shot.”
Moved but confused, how could Curry appear on the screen? Suddenly, I realized it was an AI Curry.

Passage 1
Each one of us struggles with self-worth to some degree. I spent much of my time attempting to achieve perfection in every aspect of my life. What I didn’t realize was that in my efforts to be perfect, I almost lost my life.
During my childhood, I wanted everyone’s praise and acceptance. After I graduated from high school, my struggles with self-worth increased. I began to put pressure on myself to succeed in the adult world. Meanwhile, I wasn’t feeling very confident and successful. I started to believe that my difficulties and “failures” in life were caused by my weight. I had always been a thin-to-average sized person. Suddenly, I was convinced that I was overweight. In my mind, I was FAT!
Slowly, I began to control my food by trying to diet, but nothing seemed to work. I continued to reduce what I ate each day and told myself that I would succeed, and in turn, I felt good about myself.
People around me began to notice my weight loss. At first, they weren’t alarmed; maybe some were even envious. But then the comments showed some concern. “You’re losing too much weight.” “Elisa, you’re so thin.” “You look sick.” “You’ll die if you keep this up.” All their words only made me believe that I was on the right path, getting closer to “perfection.”
My poor nutrition (营养) began to cause me to lose sleep. I found it hard to concentrate on my work or to focus on anything for a long time. I was pushing myself harder and harder at the gym, struggling to burn fat. My parents tried to stop me but I disagreed that I had a problem. None of my clothes fit, and it was hard to buy any, since I had become too thin!

Passage 2
“Oh no!” I shouted as I searched through my dance bag. My dance shoes were nowhere to be found. For a moment, I could hardly hide a smile — finally, an excuse not to go to the tiring practice! However, Mom drove straight to the studio (练功房). “Ms. Linda keeps some spare dance shoes,” she reminded gently. I took a deep breath, walked in unwillingly and fished out a pair.
“Only four weeks remain before the holiday performance,” Ms. Linda told the class. “We must focus and work hard.” My heart dropped, and the memory of last year’s stage failure flashed back — I was unable to move and breathe properly under bright lights. That night, I begged Mom to let me quit. Surprisingly, she didn’t force me to keep going. Instead, she said quietly, “It’s your decision, Kami. But have you thought about your partner? Can she make it without you?”
“She won’t mind,” I said, “She probably doesn’t even know my name.”
The next Friday, Mom picked me up from school. As we drove away, she asked if I wanted to attend the dance class. “No,” I whispered, “Not today.” “Okay,” Mom nodded understandingly. I breathed easy, sure that I had made the right choice, thinking no one would notice one absent dancer in the crowded studio.
On Saturday, during a shopping trip, I unexpectedly ran into my dance partner at checkout. “Hi, Kami!” she called cheerfully. I stood still, my face red, and realized I didn’t even know her name until she introduced herself as Sylvia. Then her smile disappeared. “I missed you yesterday. Honestly, I’m frightened about the show. My grandma is flying in just to watch, and I fear that I’ll mess up our paired moves.”
What she said struck me. I knew I was not the only one who was afraid all the time. Dance was not only my hard thing; it was our common fight.

Passage 3
I was running late. I was driving to a class to renew my CPR card that I needed for my job. As I pulled into the place where the training was being held, I saw the parking lot was almost entirely full. This parking lot wasn’t very big, and I often couldn’t find a parking spot like this inside it. Luckily, there was one spot left and I headed towards it, only to see another car coming towards it from the other direction. I wondered if I should give up this parking space. At that time, we both stopped and I saw the tired face of a young woman behind the wheel. I waved to her, letting her go on into the spot while I backed up and pulled around the building to find another one.
By the time I found a spot and got to the room, the class had already started. I saw one seat still empty. It was beside the woman I had given the parking spot to. I sat down and she explained how sorry she was for taking my spot. In her arms, I saw a young baby. She said her sitter had left for home and she couldn’t find another, so here she was, late for class because she had to bring the baby with her. I told her not to worry about it and looked down at the little angel in her arms. I could see how stressed she was, worried that her child would disturb (打扰) the class or keep her from completing the training.
The class was long but the baby stayed quiet until it was time to practice CPR on the plastic models. She had to carry out her task with both hands. So she placed the baby’s milk powder (奶粉) and bottle on the floor. But as soon as she started to lay the baby down, the little girl started to cry.

Passage 4
It was a sunny day. Lily and her parents went to the beach for a picnic. They brought a big basket filled with delicious food like sandwiches, fruits, and cakes. When they arrived at the beach, Lily was so excited. She ran towards the sea, feeling the soft sand under her feet. Her parents set up the picnic mat and started to take out the food.
Suddenly, Lily saw a little girl sitting alone on the beach, looking sad. She was wearing a simple dress and had a small bucket beside her. Lily walked over to the little girl and asked, “Hi, why are you sitting here alone? Where are your parents?” The little girl looked up at Lily with teary eyes and said, “I lost my parents. I don’t know where they are.”

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I whispered gently, “No one can change you, except yourself. If you resolve to rise to the challenge, just follow your inner voice.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have been preparing for this event, which is why you are here now.” I continued. Hearing my words, David’s face lighted up and he nodded his head with a determined look. Learning about David’s decision, his coach gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started with the gun fired. It seemed that the runaway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child like David. However, David kept running unsteadily, though he was tripped over now and then. Classmates all gathered along the track, yelling “Come on! You can make it!”. Along with waves of encouragement, David finally made it to the finish line although he was the last one, which became less important. It was his bravery and determination that really counted.

Passage 1
We started to meet regularly to draw up our plans. Though I wanted to share my ideas with him, I failed for fear that I would hold him back. I just kept nodding when he asked for my opinion. I assumed it was impossible to persuade him into accepting my views, so I didn’t bother to. On the contrary, I couldn’t wait to leave immediately we got together, and so did he. I just hoped that the presentation day could come earlier.
One day I got word that he was admitted to hospital for a serious disease. I felt so sorry for him and decided to visit him. He was pretty surprised to see me come with flowers and fruits. I offered to do the rest work and he invited me to share my ideas. We began to work like peas and carrots and met the deadline. Finally, our hard work paid off and we were awarded an A. From that, we awoke to the significance of cooperation. Just as the saying goes, one person can go far, but a group of persons can travel farther.

When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of John’s idea, she thought it was a good one, too. With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business.
When Mrs. Meredith heard of the idea, she thought it was a good one, too. Then Mrs. Meredith searched the internet and ordered a household popcorn machine. After that, Mrs. Meredith, together with her three children, paid another visit to the family and told them about the popcorn plan. Needless to say, they were deeply moved, especially Bernard who finally found a way to make money for his family. A few days later, the machine was delivered to Mrs. Meredith’s doorstep. And it wasn’t long before they got the hang of using the machine to make popcorn.
With everything ready, Bernard started out on his new business. Although it was a hard time and things were tight for everybody, Bernard’s business worked out quite well. He carried the popcorn on his small bike, going from door to door to sell it. People were surprised to see such a little, poorly-dressed boy selling popcorn at their doors, but eventually almost all of them would buy a bag or two. It is love that makes the world go round and Bernard felt it deep in his little heart.

With a deep breath, Kenneth entered the classroom. He noticed every pair of eyes turned to him — for a second, the room fell quiet, and he could feel his cheeks growing warm. He tried to calm down, knowing he needed to introduce himself. Even though his voice trembled, he struggled through a short explanation of who he was. When his introduction ended, the class burst into warm claps and cheers. Their happiness at his arrival was both a surprise and a relief for Kenneth. He became a bit less nervous, and started to think he might actually make friends here.
As the days went by, Kenneth realized his earlier worries were unnecessary. The classes were interesting, and the teachers were always ready to help. During breaks, kind classmates crowded around him — they talked about what they loved, and had fun together. After school, some students asked him to play basketball in the school gym. Kenneth saw that change wasn’t always bad. It was scary at first, but it had brought him new experiences and friendships. He also learned something else: he was stronger than he thought, and he could get used to new situations.

Daniel told us the truth before the start of the match. As we stood near the tables, he finally showed us his wrist which had been painful for weeks and had got much worse. He couldn’t play at all. The team felt shocked and became silent, but what surprised me most was what he said next: He had already chosen me to take his place in the singles match. At once, everything made sense — the extra practice, Jane’s serious teaching, and Daniel’s careful looks. Fear rushed through me, but their trust was stronger than my doubt. I took a deep breath and stepped forward.
I took the place of Daniel and began to compete. My hands shook at first, and my opening return hit the net, but Daniel and Jane’s steady voice helped me calm down. I focused on the simple skills they had taught me — keeping control, staying relaxed, and watching the opponent’s paddle closely. Little by little, I found my rhythm. The match was close, but I won with a final steady rally. The team cheered loudly. Afterward, Daniel praised our teamwork and said that I had proved I was truly part of the team. At that moment, I knew I had found a place where I truly belonged.

Come in.”

Tommy entered the house and was led to a bedroom. Lying quietly on the bed was Mrs. Lee, looking pale but still wearing a gentle smile. Seeing Tommy, her eyes lit up with surprise and warmth. Tommy stepped forward carefully and handed her the vibrant sunflower. “It’s from our Sunflower Corner,” he said softly. Mrs. Lee’s eyes fluttered open, and a warm smile spread across her face. “Thank you, Tommy,” she said weakly. “This sunflower will remind me of all the growth we shared. Promise me you’ll keep the garden alive.” Without hesitation, Tommy nodded firmly, promising to keep the garden thriving.
With Mrs. Lee’s trust, Tommy felt a deep responsibility to care for the garden. Each summer afternoon, he headed to the Sunflower Corner to water, weed and tend to the plants patiently. He also invited his classmates to join him, sharing what Mrs. Lee had taught them about growth and patience. As time passed, the garden bloomed even more beautifully, with tall sunflowers turning toward the sun. The garden became a living reminder of Mrs. Lee’s kindness and love. Tommy not only guarded the garden but also grew into a confident inhering boy carrying on the warm legacy his beloved teacher had left behind.

Passage 4

She had been depressed and lonely, and had given up on her dreams. But thanks to Mrs. Lee’s guidance and encouragement, Minji had regained her hope. She had decided to apply for college and pursue her passion for art. The letter ended with these words, “You have given my daughter the greatest gift: the gift of believing in herself.”
Mrs. Lee felt tears in her eyes as she read the letter. She felt touched by Minji’s mother’s words. She realized that she had not only taught Minji math, but also given her something more valuable: the gift of confidence and happiness.

As the finish line drew nearer, my breath grew heavy and my legs began to shake. I felt like giving up, but then I remembered all the times Dad had run with me in the park, encouraging me to keep going. I looked at him, and he smiled and said, “You can do it, Emma. Just keep going, and you’ll reach the finish line.” His words gave me strength, and I pushed myself harder, determined not to let him down.
With a final burst, I crossed the finish line, still thinking about what this race meant to me and Dad. I realized that this race was not just about winning or losing, but about the journey I had taken with Dad. It was the time we had spent running together, the encouragement he had given me, and the love that had always been there that made this moment so special. As I crossed the finish line, I knew that I had not only completed a race, but also grown stronger and more confident because of Dad’s support.

Seconds later, the driver of the dark blue car angrily walked towards me. I got out of the car and stood in front of it, frightened and regretful. My heart raced, and guilt overwhelmed me as I realised the consequences of my decision. At that moment, I wished I had listened to my mum’s advice. “You should have been more careful while driving! You’re lucky no one got hurt. But my car is in bad shape...” the driver shouted. As I stood there, facing the consequences of my choice, my mum arrived.
Instead of checking the damage to the car, Mum carefully examined my body. It was at that moment that I understood the depth of a mother’s love. Our eyes met, and in hers, I saw a mix of worry, relief and unconditional love. “I’m very sorry. We take full responsibility for this accident. We can get your car fixed,” my mum apologized sincerely. The accident marked a turning point in our relationship. From that day on, I began to appreciate my mother’s guidance and care in a new light.

When I came home, Brian asked if we had won. Clutching the 50-dollar bill, I hesitated under the soft living room lamp. I needed every dollar to buy the lens but Brian was the person who carved the pumpkin. Finally, I mumbled, “Second place, only fifty dollars.” My voice was laced with disappointment and I lowered my head, avoiding his expectant eyes. Then I tried to hand him the cash. Surprisingly, his small, warm hands pushed it back firmly. He smiled, hoarsely saying I should use the money to buy the lens and he could wait for his game, which eased my anxiety instantly.
With the money we won, we went to the store the next day. The seller greeted us warmly. When I was about to grab the lens I’d longed for, I spotted Brian lingering by the game section, fingers brushing his desired game. Catching the longing in his eyes, I held out the prize money again and suggested buying the game first. But he refused. Brian led me to the counter, insisting I buy the lens. The lens felt cool in my palm, but my heart was warm. I finally realized: guardianship isn’t one-sided protection, but mutual care. Brian, my guardian angel, taught me true care is lifting each other up together.

He lifted his head, surprise written on his face.

Mark decided to take action. He started by moving his dad’s cigarettes from their usual spot and replacing them with printed statistics about the harmful effects of smoking. He also hid the cigarette lighters, thinking that even a small inconvenience might help. Moreover, he spent hours researching online, finding stories of people who had successfully quit, hoping they would inspire his dad. Finally, he wrote a heartfelt letter titled “Please Stop Smoking” and left it on his dad’s pillow.
The next day, Mark found a note from his dad on his bed. It read, “Son, I truly appreciate your efforts. I know it’s bad for me and I want to stop too, but it’s tough.” Recognizing his dad’s struggle, Mark shifted his approach from persuasion to partnership. They became a team, talking openly about triggers, trying nicotine gum together, and marking progress on a calendar. As a united front, the journey became easier. His dad’s consumption decreased, and each milestone, big or small, strengthened their shared resolve. It was no longer just about quitting smoking, but about facing difficulties together as a family.

Days turned into weeks, the secret made Alex feel worse. He couldn’t focus on his studies, and every time he saw Ben in the hallway, he ducked into the nearest classroom. He realized that his silence was likely hurting their friendship more than the accident ever could. The camera was just an object, expensive as it was, but Ben’s trust was irreplaceable. The weight of the secret was crushing him. He knew he had to face the consequences. He decided he couldn’t be a shadow anymore.
Alex walked to Ben’s house, holding the damaged camera in his hands. When Ben opened the door, his expression changed from confusion to relief. “I thought you were angry with me! Why have you been ignoring me all this time?” he shouted. Alex held out the broken lens, tears stinging his eyes, and he explained everything — the hike, the fall, and his fear. To his surprise, Ben didn’t yell. He looked at the camera, then at Alex, and smiled gently. “Cameras can be fixed, Alex,” he said, patting Alex’s shoulder. “But I was worried I’d lost my best friend,” Alex explained. They spent the afternoon looking up repair shops, their bond stronger than before.

One afternoon, Lily showed up at my door, holding that same notebook. Her eyes were red and swollen as she apologized to me. She explained that on her birthday, right before I gave her the gift, she’d gotten an urgent call — her grandma had passed out suddenly and been rushed to the hospital. She’d been so scared and distracted that she’d had no time to look at the notebook carefully. But when she opened it that night, she cried. “This is the best gift I’ve ever received,” she said as she turned the pages. I saw tear marks on the letter I’d written.
Hearing Lily’s words, all my anger and sadness disappeared immediately. I hugged Lily tightly, saying that I was so stupid for jumping to conclusions without asking her why. We sat on the sofa, admiring the notebook together. She pointed at each drawing and told me how much she loved every detail. I apologized for ignoring her calls and hiding from her those days, and she said she was sorry for not explaining to me sooner. The sun cast a warm glow on both of us. As we laughed at our silly memories, I realized that true friendship is built on understanding and forgiveness, not just happy times together.

Anyway, I was inspired greatly. I grabbed my basketball and rushed to the court — no more hiding! David laughed as I joined the training, “That’s the guy I know!” Practising day in and day out helped me sharpen my skills. Every time I failed to get a point, Curry’s “next shot” pushed me. For the first time, I didn’t fear mistakes. By the time championship week started, I was ready to perform beyond everyone’s expectations with my accurate shooting and continuous efforts — self-doubt had faded into muscle memory.
I stood confidently on the championship final court, ready to give my all. The cheers of the crowd filling the air, I only focused on the ball. With only ten seconds left, a similar scene unfolded once again. At the moment, the powerful words of David and AI Curry echoed again in my ears. The shot didn’t just score points, for it brought back the player I’d almost lost. Not until I heard claps and cheers around me did I realize that I made it. It was my friend’s firm support and my idol’s inspiring spirit that brought the confidence back into me.

Then one night, I couldn’t sleep again, and my heart beat its way out of my chest. I tried to relax, but I couldn’t. The beating became so rapid and so strong that I could no longer breathe. Really scared and ill, I felt I was going to die. Knowing that help was needed, I stood up, went towards the door, and immediately fell down, letting out a cry of pain. Awakened by the unusual sound, my parents came in to see what had happened. Shocked and worried, they rushed me to the hospital. It took doctors and nurses several hours to bring me back to life.
When I lay on the hospital bed, I began to rethink what I did to my body. I decided to stop my foolish way of losing weight and pursuing perfection. Instead, I must be confident of myself and stay committed to being healthy. I now use my intelligence, talents and acts of kindness to express myself. This is true beauty, and it has nothing to do with the size of my body. With my experience of trying to be “perfect” on the outside, I had forgotten who I was on the inside. What I know now is that we are — each and every one of us — already perfect.

Looking at her worried face, I felt a sudden increase of determination inside me. “You are not alone,” I promised, gripping her trembling hand. “We’ll conquer the stage together.” Realizing that Sylvia depended on me, I found the courage to face my fear. We spent the remaining weeks glued to the studio floor, repeating every step until our movements flowed smoothly. We corrected each other’s errors and celebrated small victories. The anxiety that once held me back was replaced by a sense of responsibility. We were no longer two strangers; we were a team, drawing strength from one another to perfect our routine before the big moment.
The day of the holiday performance finally came. Stepping onto the stage, I felt the familiar heat of the bright lights, but this time, I didn’t freeze. I took a deep breath, looking at Sylvia. She offered a determined and brave nod. Then the music began. We moved as one body, our feet gliding across the wooden floor with grace. Every turn was correct; every jump was high. When we finished our final move, loud cheers rose from the audience. Spotting Sylvia’s grandmother smiling in the front row, I realized that true success wasn’t about avoiding fear, but sharing the challenge with a friend.

I offered to take care of her baby after finishing my task. The woman was deeply grateful and agreed immediately. I held the baby gently, picked up the milk bottle, and went outside to wander. I gently comforted the baby and sang a soft song to calm her down. I fed her some milk. Soon the baby was smiling at me. With the baby quiet in my arms, her mother finished the task smoothly. She thanked me again and we exchanged contact information and promised to keep in touch with each other.
When I told my mother about this, she offered to look after the baby the next class. Soon it was time for the next class. My mother and I drove to the classroom together. She brought a baby stroller, a set of baby clothes and some baby food. The woman and her baby had already arrived. When we told her our plan, she was moved to tears. She trusted us and gave the baby to my mother. Then my mother took the baby outside, so she could attend the training without worry. It was a small act of kindness, but it made a big difference.
