From what Gorky said, I believe true beauty is born from hard work and the wisdom created with our hands. This belief was vividly brought to life through my own experience last spring.
Our class made up our minds to renovate and decorate a neglected corner of the school garden. At first, it was overgrown with weeds and littered with rubbish. We spent an entire afternoon working side by side: pulling weeds, planting colorful flowers, and repainting a small bench. Though our hands were covered with dirt and our bodies worn out, the sight of the lively corner filled our hearts with great pride and delight.
On that day, I truly grasped the meaning of Gorky's words. The greatest beauty lay not merely in the garden itself, but in the sense of fulfillment and precious shared memories we had created through our joint labor.

"Let me fetch it for you," I said and rushed downstairs. I dragged out the rocking chair, moved it upstairs, and set it down beside her. "It might work.” I encouraged her to try it. She sank into it, carrying her baby, and suddenly, the crying softened into quiet breaths. With tears of gratitude welling up in her eyes, she whispered, "Thank you." I waved back, closing the door behind me. Returning home, I posted a message in the group chat, explaining the young mother’s difficult situation and calling on everyone to offer her simple, respectful support.
The neighbors responded to my post and agreed to gather at 3C instantly. Lena arrived with some baby food, and Tom followed with two chairs, telling me he'd bring a bed frame the next day. Warm blankets, a small lamp, and toys were neatly piled up at her door. Enveloped in warmth, the new mum choked up, "Thank you all! Your support means the world to me. "We smiled at each other, knowing we'd given a helping hand, I realized the "noise" we had complained about was actually a cry for help, and our kindness had turned conflict into care.

M: I'm building a model ship. It's going to be a cruise ship.
W: Oh, that sounds cool! Do you need any help with it?

W: Andrew, what do you think of your college life in China?
M: Well, it's completely different from that in the UK, where I'm from.
W: Come on, share more specifics with me.
M: Alright. The class timetable is set, unlike in the UK, where we pick our own times and courses. And I don't have early classes on Monday, which is great.
W: I see it. So staying in bed a bit longer is what you like most about college life in China?
M: Not really. I don’t get up late every day. On Wednesday and Friday, I wake up at 7:00 because my advanced math class begins at 8:00. It's a hard course, but I like mornings because my brain works better then.
W: You really know how to get used to things. I'm proud that you're managing everything well.
Text 8
M: I've been using Al-aided teaching tools recently. It's really helpful because these tools can create personalized exercise plans for students.
W: But I'm always worried about AI's accuracy. Once, an Al-generated math worksheet contained wrong answers, which I didn't notice before handing it out to students.
M: That's because you chose a random AI tool. Choosing trusted education platforms helps avoid such is-sues and saves time compared to preparing lessons by yourself.
W: Maybe, but I still prefer designing teaching contents on my own. How do you make sure the AI-generated materials match the students' actual learning levels, for example?
M: Most AI education platforms have detailed setting options for students' grades and learning progress. Why not give it another try with a well-known AI education website?
W: Maybe you are right!

W: What did you do then?
M: I instantly asked a nearby stranger to call the emergency rescue team. Then, I found it too dangerous to rush into the building directly or use the damaged stairs, so I climbed over the broken walls to reach the child. I finally managed to get us both out safely.
W: I bet his parents were relieved to see their son, safe and sound.
M: Absolutely! When they saw their son, they hugged him tightly and kept thanking me.
W: Did they offer you anything as a gesture of gratitude?
M: I refused their money. Instead, they treated me to a very nice restaurant for dinner.

A grandmother cooks chicken. A group of kids, ages 8 to 14, watch her make the dish. This cooking class is part of a “Summer Camp” in Southern California. At this camp, grandmas are in charge. Each week, they teach young campers how to cook a new dish and do crafts(手工).
“Loneliness is something that seniors are challenged with and they love having younger people around them,” said Zainab, who works at Olive Community Services that brings older adults together and created the camp.
During the last week of the camp, a 9-year-old Janna learned how to use a sewing machine and make pockets. The camper had pressed hard on the machine’s pedal, making the needle move quickly. “Slowly, slowly,” Rahim, a grandma teaching the sewing class, said to her. The girl smiled when she made it. Rahim said the camp is “filling a gap” for kids. Many schools don’t teach these skills like cooking and sewing.
Rahim also doesn’t get to spend much time with her grandchildren because they don’t live close. “It is heartwarming to be able to interact with those who love being around you,” she said.
The summer camp was organized through a partnership with the Golden Connections Club started by a 14-year-old high school student Leena to encourage teens and seniors to interact. She noticed that many students didn’t have the chance to spend as much time with their grandparents. She also learned about challenges faced by senior adults, such as unfair treatment.
The club organizes monthly lunches at Leena’s school. They invite the seniors to the school and discuss topics where both groups can learn from each other. One of the most valuable lessons they’ve shared with her is to live in the moment, and this has taken on new meaning for Leena. “The people we have right now, they’re not going to be with us forever,” she said.

Given that overexposure(过度接触) to noise pollution can result in health issues, some escape the noise by traveling for silence, but quiet time at home is just as crucial. “Small pockets of silence in daily life can help us regulate(调节) stress,” says psychologist Olga Lehmann whose work centers on silence. She notes her goal is to achieve a balance between peace and the chaos of everyday life, which is becoming more achievable through quiet-seeking movements.
Some quiet-seekers use extreme measures like darkness retreats (静修), which put participants in total darkness with almost no interruption for several days, with the goal of self-discovery and self-reflection. Lehmann says that these options may work for some. For many people, however, it’s a good idea to enjoy something like sitting in a local park without technology for 10 minutes, or attending a silent yoga class.
Many quiet-seekers pair silence with community. Meetup organizations like Peace in the Wild which connects nature enthusiasts (爱好者) through outdoor recreation, have turned hiking into a meditative (冥想的) group activity. Silent Book Club, which brings readers together to read for an hour without talking, has risen in popularity. “We call it the quiet happy hour,” says Guinevere de la Mare, co-founder of Silent Book Club.
However, quiet-seeking only gets you so far, especially in loud cities, where over 50% of the world’s population lives. The WHO has named noise pollution a leading environmental factor for health issues, topped only by air pollution. “The main issue in cities is always road traffic noise, which is almost impossible to avoid; that’s why many are pushing the idea of electric vehicles(车辆),” says Francesco Aletta, an urban sound planner at University College London.
Fortunately, cities are showing slow signs of progress. Last year, New York City fixed noise cameras to track vehicles that break the city’s 85-decibel (分贝) limit. And living walls, like the 30,000-plant exterior (外部) on an office building in Dusseldorf, Germany, absorb noise while reducing urban heat.
28. What’s the purpose of Lehmann’s work?
A. To integrate silence into daily routines.
B. To advocate regulating noise pollution.
C. To keep the daily stress levels under control.
D. To break the balance between silence and chaos.
29. Which movement is suitable for quiet-seekers?
A. Joining in a silent outdoor activity. B. Paying a visit to public destinations.
C. Participating in loud dance workouts. D. Attending a competitive marathon event.
30. How are cities addressing the road traffic noise?
A. By cutting down urban heat. B. By applying innovative practice.
C. By breaking the city’s decibel limit. D. By banning all vehicles from urban areas.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The common activities of extreme quiet-seeking.
B. How the technology worsens urban noise pollution.
C. How people seek quietness and reduce noise pollution.
D. The rising popularity of silent activities in communities.

Swindale Beck meanders(蜿蜒)through fields, farmland and valleys. However, not long ago,the river took a far more straight course(流向).
A healthy river should be winding, free flowing and filled with wildlife. The ideal river is “very dynamic, messy and chaotic”, says Glen Swainson, a manager of RSPB. In Britain, however, 97% of rivers are broken up by artificial barriers. And for centuries rivers have been slowly artificially straightened to stop water from flooding and spilling onto farmland and houses.
But removing a river's natural meanders has, in fact, achieved the opposite effect. Instead, it has disrupted the flow of rivers and destroyed water habitats, water quality and heightened flood risk. As the poor health of Europe's rivers and streams continues to make news, communities are turning towards natural solutions to restore their rivers.
According to Tom Hayek, a natural flood management specialist, adding meanders into rivers has two benefits--it changes both the volume and the speed of water. Firstly, it decreases what's known as flow conveyance. “When the length of the river is increased, you spread water over a wider area. This allows more water to sit up in the headwaters." The second impact is on speed. Put simply, the more structure you add to the shape of a river, the slower the water will move down it. If it's straight, water will “fly” through, says Hayek. When the flow of water is slowed, it creates deeper pools for fish to gather and rest.
With meanders added to Swindale Beck, the results were astonishing, says Annabel Rushton, a visitor experience manager. “Within three months of that river being re-wiggled(重新蜿蜒),the salmon(鲑鱼)were spawning(产卵)in that one kilometre area for the first time in over 150 years,” she says.Scientists have also noted an increase in fish gathering. Then, there were the knock-on effects. Water-loving plants returned, providing cover for young fish to feed and hide.
32.Why were many rivers in Britain artificially straightened in the past?
A.To increase the natural flow of rivers. B.To improve water habitats for wildlife.
C. To create barriers for flood management. D.To protect people and land from floods.
33.What problem may be caused by removing a river's meanders?
A. Lower water levels. B.Poorer farming land.
C.Worse water quality. D.Drier wildlife habitats.
34.What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A.The benefits of adding meanders. B.The impacts of straightening rivers.
C.The examples of controlling floods. D.The needs of increasing water speed.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Nature conservation is often a long game.
B.Species co-exist and function as a whole.
C.Eco-recovery can happen at a high speed.
D.Bio-diversity relies on human intervention(干预).

How to Finally Stick with a Fitness Habit
Have you committed to a new habit-exercising, let's say-but keep falling off the wagon? Do you give up when the going gets tough? You may have low self-efficacy(自我效能). 36 Here are some of the ways that psychologists say we can build self-efficacy:
Congratulate yourself for small wins
Past successes are fuel for future success. This applies to tiny things like habits. 37 It also applies to bigger projects. When you did a beginner running program and “graduated”by running a 5K race, that's huge. You learned that you can run farther than you ever thought you could. You learned what that finish-line glow of accomplishment(成就)really feels like. 38
Watch people doing the thing you want to do
The second-best thing to practice self-efficacy is to indirectly experience others' success. For some people, looking up to a world-class athlete can inspire them in the gym. 39 When your friends hits a new dead lift record, you'll cheer for them, right? Even though you weren't the person walking up to the bar, you've still experienced a taste the whole roller coaster of emotions from being nervous at the attempt to celebrating the success.
40
When you're trying to stay on a path, it helps to know where that path leads. What will it look like to make it to your goal? Try to imagine scenarios(情境)where you're trying to do the thing and you momentarily can't. It will help to think them through ahead of time and plan out how you will handle them. Then , when the time comes, you won't hesitate to execute your plan.
A.Set realistic goals
B.Visualize success (and failure)
C. Don't skip the gym on the first day, or it's harder to start the habit later.
D.But don't worry: Self-efficacy is something that you can build with practice.
E.If you managed to make it to the gym once, it's a lot easier to show up on day two.
F.And you can harness(利用)all of that ,all over again, when you start working on a new goal.
G.For others, it can be helpful to look at somebody who is closer to you in skill level or experience.

I lived in an old apartment complex where the walls were thin. For weeks, my new neighbor upstairs was keeping me awake every night between ten and midnight. What I heard was slow, forceful footsteps mixed with crying, as if someone were pacing with the weight of the world on shoulders. To cope with the noise, I would sink into the old rocking chair (摇椅)by the window. The rhythm somehow quieted my mind. But tonight, the noise was just unbearable. I posted in the building' s group chat, "Can the 3C neighbor keep it down after 10?"Almost immediately, Lena, a cashier at a local market, replied, "Same here. Haven' t slept well for weeks." And Tom, who ran the secondhand shop on the corner, added. "Don' t they realize how loud it is?" A few others responded, but 3C never did.
I'd had enough. "That' s it," I thought aloud, pulling on my slippers. "I' m going up there!" I stormed to the third floor, playing my angry speech in my head, "Keep it down! Some of us need to work tomorrow!" The moment the door opened, I blurted out (脱口而出), "Do you have any idea how much noise you' re making?" But the rest of my prepared speech got stuck in my throat. A young woman stood there, eyes red, swaying (摇晃) gently back and forth in a desperate attempt to comfort a crying baby. The apartment behind her was humble— no dining table, no chairs, not even a lamp, only a mattress (床垫) and a few empty baby food packets on the floor.
"I' m so sorry, Madam," she whispered, managing a weak smile, "I' m just trying to get her to sleep." That was when my anger disappeared. A familiar rhythm surfaced in my mind as I saw her sway the baby tiredly. "I have a chair downstairs that might calm your baby," I smiled softly. She looked up, eyes widening in disbelief.
