If you plan to take a trip alone during your summer holiday, you need to master some practical skills to keep safe and enjoy your journey. Traveling alone is exciting and freeing, but it also brings hidden risks, especially for middle school students. Here are several useful suggestions from experienced travelers.
First, make a detailed travel plan before you set off. Write down your route, hotel address, bus or train schedules and keep a copy for your parents. Don’t change your plan casually without telling your family members. Book formal hotels rather than cheap roadside inns. Check customer reviews online to make sure the accommodation is safe and regular.
Second, pay attention to personal property safety. Put your ID card, mobile phone and pocket money in different pockets. Never show large amounts of cash in public. When you visit scenic spots, don’t accept drinks or snacks from strange people. Some bad people may put harmful things in food to cheat travelers. If you take taxis, choose official licensed cars and send the car number to your family immediately.
Third, learn to deal with emergencies. Save local police number and tourist service hotline in your phone. When you get lost, stay at crowded public places instead of walking into quiet narrow streets. Don’t argue fiercely with unfriendly strangers; try to leave the place calmly and ask for help from shop assistants or police officers.
Last but not least, keep in touch with your family every day. Send messages or make short phone calls to report your safety condition every evening. Don’t stay out late at night alone. It’s wise to join group sightseeing activities instead of wandering around unfamiliar blocks by yourself.
Proper preparation can lower traveling risks greatly. Independent traveling can improve your self-management ability as long as you put safety in the first place all the time.

The Sahara is the largest hot desert in the world. It covers over nine million square kilometres across North Africa. The weather there can be very different in a day’s time. During the day, temperatures rise above 40℃, while nights can be very cold.
The Sahara is as big as Canada but has very few people. Less than two and a half million people live there and most of them are nomads. Nomads are people who have no permanent (固定的) homes. They move from place to place, carrying everything they need to live. The nomads of the Sahara are called Bedouin, which means “desert people”. They depend on goats (山羊), sheep, and camels (骆驼) for food and transport. Water is the most important for them. They need water to live, so they must carry enough water or know where to find it. Without water, life is impossible.
A desert is not defined (定义) by sand but by the lack of rain. To be a desert, a place must get less than 250 mm of rain each year. Surprisingly, only 25% of the Sahara is covered in sand. The rest is rock and gravel (沙砾).
Long ago, the Sahara was covered in ice and later turned into grasslands. Over time, it became the desert we see today. Truly, the Sahara is a place of history and change.
