When Sarah signed up for an online writing course, she was not expecting to make new friends. After returning from her first trip to Jordan, she became interested in sharing real stories about the Middle East, a region often misunderstood by the media. Hoping to move from tourism into freelance writing business, she decided to take a short online course to learn practical writing skills.
A few days after the course began, Sarah received a message from another student named Jenna. At first, Sarah was reluctant to connect with a stranger online. However, Jenna’s warmth and enthusiasm soon eased Sarah’s hesitation. Before long, the two women were sharing thoughts and experiences that Sarah had never expected to discuss with someone she had never met.
In the beginning, they mainly discussed their writing assignments and exchanged useful information about the business. Gradually, their conversations became more personal. They started sharing stories about their families, daily lives, and future dreams. Although they lived far away from each other and had never met in person, they developed a close friendship.
Nearly ten years have passed since their first conversation, and Sarah still considers Jenna one of her best friends. Whenever something important happens in her life, Jenna is often among the first people she talks to. Their friendship has remained strong despite the distance between them.
Sarah and Jenna’s story may seem unusual, but experts believe friendships like theirs are becoming increasingly important in modern life, especially at a time when many people feel lonely and socially disconnected. Shasta Nelson, a friendship expert, points out that many people today need deeper human connections. She believes that online friendships allow people to share different experiences and support each other emotionally, even across long distances.

If you think cows spend their days only eating grass and looking calm, Veronika would like to have a word with you. Or, more likely, she would just pick up a brush and get back to work.
Veronika is a Brown Swiss cow living in Austria. Like many cows, she sometimes gets itchy. An itch like this is stubborn — it lingers and refuses to fade on its own. The problem is that a cow’s body is not designed for easy scratching(挠). Try reaching the middle of your back without bending like a gymnast, and you will understand her trouble. Most cows solve this problem by rubbing against trees, fences or rocks, often doing so together in groups. Veronika, however, seems to have chosen a more professional solution: a long-handled brush.
Researchers noticed that Veronika could hold the brush in her mouth and move it to scratch places she could not easily reach, such as her back and underside. Even more surprising, she did not use the brush in the same way every time. When she wanted to scratch tougher areas, she used the bristly end. When she needed to touch softer parts, she used the smoother handle. In other words, she was not just waving a brush around like a confused farm cleaner. She appeared to be choosing the right part of the tool for the right job.
That may sound funny, but to scientists it is serious. Tool use has often been connected with animals such as monkeys, crows and octopuses. Cows are usually not placed on that “clever tool user” list. Veronika’s behavior knocks down this old idea. It suggests that farm animals may be better problem-solvers than people have assumed.
The discovery also raises a bigger question: Have cows been less intelligent, or have humans simply not been watching them carefully enough? Many farm animals live in places where there are few objects to explore. Veronika, as a pet cow, had more freedom and more chances to experiment. Perhaps she is not a once-in-a-million genius. Perhaps she is just the cow who finally got the chance to show off. So the next time you see a cow staring quietly across a field, be careful. She may not be daydreaming. She may be planning her next invention.
28. What problem did Veronika have?
A. She could not find enough grass nearby.
B. She could not ease her discomfort alone.
C. She could not get along with other cows.
D. She could not bend like a gymnast freely.
29. How did Veronika use the brush?
A. She moved it around aimlessly.
B. She held it in her mouth playfully.
C. She picked its different parts wisely.
D. She rubbed it against surfaces repeatedly.
30. Why did scientists find Veronika’s behavior important?
A. It explained why cows behaved strangely.
B. It proved that cows liked to explore objects.
C. It challenged old beliefs about farm animals.
D. It showed that cows were smarter than monkeys.
31. What is the best title for the passage?
A. The Cow That Outsmarted a Stubborn Itch
B. The Cow That Stared Across a Green Field
C. The Brush That Changed a Cow’s Daily Life
D. The Brush That Turned a Cow into a Cleaner
D
Throughout history, trees have played a crucial role in maintaining ecological balance. They absorb CO2 and transform it into oxygen. But one of the challenges with this traditional carbon absorption is that the CO2 trees store can be released back into the atmosphere when they die.
Luckily, the discovery of certain trees in Kenya adds a new dimension to this natural process. These trees, also found in several other countries, have been observed to transform CO2 into calcium oxalate(草酸钙). Then bacteria present in the trees and surrounding soil transform it further into calcium carbonate (碳酸钙), a primary component of limestone and chalk. The unique process ensures that the CO2 is kept in solid form for much longer, even after the tree’s life ends. This finding was stressed by Mike Rowley from the University of Zurich at the Goldschmidt Conference.
While the scientific community is optimistic about these findings, several challenges remain. The primary concern is determining the exact amount of CO2 that these trees can transform throughout their lifetime. Without this accurate data, it is challenging to assess the full impact of this method globally. Understanding the ecological balance and ensuring the preservation of biodiversity are essential before worldwide planting of these trees. Cooperative research efforts are needed to explore these aspects and develop a comprehensive strategy for using these trees as a natural solution to climate change.
This discovery in Kenya invites us to reconsider the potential of natural processes in addressing environmental challenges. While technological solutions to climate change are vital, integrating natural methods offers an innovative approach. The unique ability of these trees presents a promising method for exploration.
The journey to fighting climate change is complex. As we dig deeper into understanding natural phenomena like the Kenyan trees, we must ask ourselves: How can we make the best of the power of nature to create a sustainable future for generations to come?
32.What is special about the trees found in Kenya?
A.They help turn CO2 into solids. B.They can absorb more CO2.
C.They can release oxygen quickly. D.They live in harmony with bacteria.
33.Why is the accurate data on CO2 transformation of the trees important?
A.To grow more trees in Kenya quickly.
B.To carry out more cooperative research.
C.To keep the ecological balance and increase biodiversity.
D.To evaluate the global impact of the CO2 transformation.
34.What does the author try to explore in the last two paragraphs?
A.The methods of green development. B.The role of nature in climate solutions.
C.The benefits of scientific approaches. D.The seriousness of global climate change.
35.What does the passage tell us?
A.Kenyan trees are a natural carbon lock.
B.A defensive strategy in nature is found.
C.Tree planting is a key to ecological balance.
D.A recent advance in CO2 research is achieved.
第二节 七选五 (共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分)

Making Friends with AI
These days, artificial intelligence (AI) is showing up everywhere in our daily lives—from conference rooms to classrooms, health-care services to dinner table conversations. 36 These advanced systems are capable of doing things that previously only humans could do—and doing them quickly.
What Is AI?
AI is technology that enables machines to perform complex tasks connected with human intelligence, such as learning and problem-solving. When people talk about AI today, they’re usually referring to generative AI, a type of AI system that can create writing, images, and computer code. 37 These are advanced software trained on vast amounts of human language data.
What Can You Do with AI?
The sky really is the limit. Some people use AI to create a workout plan or even name a puppy. Overall, AI tools can be incredibly useful for quickly generating large amounts of data and pulling key themes from text. 38 You can invite it to offer feedback or find faults with your logic. For instance, it can help you brainstorm ideas for planning a garden or improving your résumé.
Tips for Using AI
When working with AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT, be specific with your prompts. AI tools are likely to fill in the blanks, which can easily lead them to give you an output that doesn’t match what you’re looking for. 39 Think about what level of detail you want, and whether you want an answer in a specific format like a chart or a bulleted list.
What to Watch Out For
AI tools aren’t yet fully reliable in terms of accuracy. They’re known to routinely make up information and present it confidently as fact—a phenomenon often referred to as “hallucinating.” 40 You can ask a chatbot to use confirmed sourcing, but the only way to ensure accuracy is to fact-check the information yourself.
A. With AI, context is everything.
B. However, AI is far from being perfect.
C. So you shouldn’t depend on them for crucial advice.
D. What sets AI apart from past technical innovations?
E. But one of the most popular ways to use AI is as a creative partner.
F. The answer you get will only be as good as the prompt you give.
G. More specifically, they are often talking about conversational AI systems.
第三部分 语言运用 (共两节,满分30分)
第一节 (共15小题; 每小题1分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。
His name was Rex because he looked like a dinosaur. The giant tortoise came 41 down a suburban Phoenix street one recent spring evening. A group of 42 neighbors gathered around him. I was among them. Questions swirled. Where did he come from? How far had he come? Was he hungry? Thirsty? Tired?
His unlikely stroll down a sidewalk brought the neighborhood into a buzz and launched a joint 43 to find his owners. But Rex’s daring getaway shows just how 44 owning such a tortoise can be. Arizona is at the center of the trouble, thanks to a climate that allows the eggs to hatch(孵)easily and each female can have dozens of babies a year.
As we all asked each other what to do with him and looked for a safe place to keep him, Rex was lifted into a wheelbarrow(独轮车)and 45 a neighbor’s backyard. Later, we found that Rex was temporarily staying at a nearby house that was up for sale. The temporary 46 believed Rex escaped when someone touring the home left the gate open.
When the caretaker finally came to claim the tortoise, this man first had to 47 how to get the 100-plus pound creature out of some thick bushes. No amount of carrots or shell nudging had 48 Rex to move an inch. So the man bent down and dragged Rex out. The huge tortoise, its feet hanging, didn’t seem to care much.
It is heartwarming to see a community 49 to help a stray animal. Neighbors who had never spoken before were suddenly planning together. 50 , this incident also leaves a serious reflection. These long-lived creatures require decades of 51 commitment. Many people buy them when they are small, without expecting how large and destructive they can become.
Rex’s adventure had a happy ending, but it serves as a gentle 52 to anyone looking for an unusual pet: preparation and responsibility matter more than excitement. This unexpected guest brought a touch of 53 into their suburban lives, breaking the boring parts of their daily routines. And for the author, it was a 54 lesson that we share our spaces with creatures far older in design than our neat sidewalks and paved roads. The next time you see a slow mover, remember: they might just be on a grand 55 of their own.
41. A. marching B. dashing C. wandering D. escaping
42. A. frightened B. surprised C. sympathetic D. generous
43. A. effort B. campaign C. debate D. agreement
44. A. active B. rewarding C. expensive D. challenging
45. A. broken into B. turned into C. rolled into D. looked into
46. A. seller B. caretaker C. agent D. neighbor
47. A. rule out B. point out C. look out D. figure out
48. A. made B. convinced C. allowed D. reminded
49. A. competing B. socializing C. uniting D. gathering
50. A. Therefore B. However C. Besides D. Otherwise
51. A. continuous B. temporary C. lighthearted D. intentional

Grandma worked as a housewife all her life. For decades, she cooked, cleaned, and cared for everyone in the family. When her children grew up and moved away, the busy pace that had filled her days disappeared overnight. The house stayed clean, yet strangely lifeless. She often stood by the window, watching people hurrying by, as if the whole world were moving forward while she stood still, unsure of where she truly belonged. To fill the long afternoons, she picked up her old hobby — knitting(织). Most afternoons, her needles clicked softly in the quiet house. She kept knitting sweaters for me, though I never wore them — as a member of the school hands-on club, I admired her superb skills, but they felt too old-fashioned compared with what I could buy online. Still, she never seemed to mind, smiling as she went on knitting.
One day, I noticed her constantly talking to her phone. I thought she was calling a friend, but guess what? She was livestreaming, showing people online how to knit a sweater! I couldn’t believe it! The technology itself seemed far beyond her. “Maybe I can still be useful,” she told me with a shy smile as she balanced her phone against a teacup for support.
However, the comments online were far from friendly. “Who would watch this?” someone wrote. “Go take a rest, Granny,” another added. I saw her hands tremble for a moment before she steadied them again.
I wanted to fire back, but was stopped by Grandma. “Even if only one person learns things from me, it’s worth it.” Still, a quiet sadness remained in her eyes. Each evening, she sat under the lamp, her needles clicking busily, her voice soft but determined as she livestreamed to a nearly empty audience. Watching her persistence, I felt both proud and helpless — I longed to ease her struggle, yet the right way to reach her seemed just beyond my ability.

Version One
Youth Action on Climate Change
Hey guys, welcome back to the channel!
It’s Li Hua here, representing Chinese youth.
Talking about climate change, we are not just onlookers. In our daily lives, we practice “digital carbon reduction”—planting virtual trees via apps by walking instead of driving. On campus, my peers and I also run a "Zero-Waste Shop" to exchange second-hand books, making low-carbon living the new cool.
Climate change knows no borders. As the future of this planet, every small choice we make creates a ripple effect. Let’s click that "Action" button together! What's your eco-friendly hack? Leave a comment below!
Thank you for listening.
Version Two
Youth Action on Climate Change
Hello everyone, and welcome to today’s episode! This is Li Hua, sharing voices from China.
To battle climate change, Chinese students are shifting from awareness to action. Personally, I have embraced a "low-carbon diet" by minimizing food waste and choosing seasonal produce. Moreover, our school has initiated a green project where trash is sorted into smart bins, turning waste into collective eco-wealth.
Standing at a critical turning point, we, the younger generation, must shoulder our shared responsibility. It is our small steps that pave the way for a greener future. Tune in next week for more stories, and don't forget to hit "Subscribe"!
第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
Then an idea hit me — Grandma could join our hands-on club! The next week, she arrived with her basket of colorful yarn. As she started knitting, she chatted about her craft, her fingers dancing over the needles and yarn. My club friends crowded around, bursting with questions: “How do you make this pattern?” “Do you knit for kids?” Grandma smiled, pausing to demonstrate. Later, we helped her adjust the camera angle for clear close-ups, pick trendy background music, and provide youth-friendly sweater designs, making her livestream far more engaging.
With club friends’ help, Grandma soon became an Internet celebrity as “Knitting Granny”. Having attracted thousands of followers, she went on to showcase more patterns online. Comments changed from teasing to admiration: “I wish my grandma could teach me like this!” “So heartwarming!” She even sparked a trend called “warm fashion”, inspiring young people to knit family gifts and share stories of connection. No longer lonely, she found rhythm and purpose in life again. As I slipped on the sweater she had made for me, it struck me that Grandma hadn’t simply regained her place — she had redefined it.

M: Tim Berners-Lee is a well-known computer scientist who is recognized as being the inventor of the World Wide Web, but what inspired him to do so? Well, his parents had a major influence on his career. They were both computer scientists, and they worked together on the first computer designed for sale, which was called the Ferranti Mark l. As a child, Tim discovered a love of electronics when playing with model trains. However, in 1973, he went to Oxford University to study physics. That did not stop him studying computers in his spare time. In fact, he managed to build his own computer from a broken TV set. After he graduated in 1976, he worked for a telecommunications company. Two years later, he worked creating software for printers. It was in 1980 that he started his project on hypertext. This project created the foundations for establishing the World Wide Web.
