第二节
One possible version:
The next day,Oliver went to Lilly's house and shared the idea with her parents."I will take Lilly to the
prom,"he said firmly and sincerely. He explained that he would push her wheelchair, dance with her gently,
and make sure she felt included throughout the night.Jaime and Brooks exchanged surprised but grateful
glances.Tears welled up in Jaime's eyes as she asked Oliver,"Are you sure?"Oliver nodded without hesitation.
"She's my friend. She deserves a normal night like everyone else.I'll be with her every step of the way,"Oliver
added.
At the prom,Oliver gently guided Lilly's wheelchair through the crowd. He stopped in the center of the
dance floor, took her hand, and swayed gently to the music. The wheelchair spun and glided as Oliver swayed,
and Lilly's face lit up with joy and excitement. She was no longer a girl with a disability-she was simply a
teenager dancing, feeling the rhythm just like everyone else.Others present applauded them. Her parents wept
with happiness, while Oliver smiled with pride, knowing he had helped his dearest friend realize her long-held
dream.

A few years ago, teenager Mia Heller came across an article in her local newspaper about
ongoing water quality issues in her neighborhood in Warrenton,Virginia.Tests had shown
that the water available for daily consumption was highly polluted with microplastics().The
article further reported that the government would not be providing any funds for filtering()the
water and that it was up to people to solve the problem.
Not long after the article came out,Heller's parents used an advanced water filtering
system at her home. However, seeing her mother replace the water filter membranes()
time and again,Heller set out to find a better solution.
In 2025,Heller had a working model.Heller used a reusable magnetic oil()called
ferrofluid to selectively catch microplastics as water flows through her filtration system.
While her model successfully filtered out the microplastics from the water in two simple steps,
the system still needed to be maintained frequently as it did not self-recycle the ferrofluid.
Eventually,Heller found the perfect solution. Her current model, which is about the size
of a standard bag of flour, consists of three parts. The first unit, about a liter in volume,
holds the polluted water inside it,while the second stores ferrofluid. The core process takes
place in the third unit, which is much smaller.
"A magnetic field pulls the microplastics out of the water, and the ferrofluid is recovered
and reused, explains Heller. As a stand-alone filter, the system can filter about one liter of

water at a time, removing 95.52%of microplastics from the water and recycling 87.15%of
the ferrofluid.
Speaking of Heller's filtration system,Matthew J.Campen,a scientist at the University
of New Mexico in Albuquerque,is excited."Considering that her recent test results are just a
starting point for a high school research project, one can only imagine that those percentages
would improve with further efforts,"he says.
24.What did Heller learn from the local newspaper?
A.Her neighborhood was short of water.
B.The government would provide sufficient funds.
C.Consumers were responsible for filtering the water.
D.The water polluted with microplastics was safe to drink.
25.Why did Heller start working on her filtration system?
A.To win a science award.
B.To solve a family problem.
C.To raise money for her mother.
D.To improve her parents'health.
26.What is the limitation of Heller's initial model?
A.Too much water consumption.
B.Reliance on frequent maintenance.
C.The complexity of the steps involved.
D.Incapability of removing microplastics.
27.How does Matthew J.Campen find Heller's filtration system?
A.It is flexible.
B.It is affordable.
C.It is inaccurate.
D.It is promising.

For years, modern parenting seemed locked in a competition nobody asked for.Social
media feeds were filled with clean homes, structured schedules, homemade lunches, and
children enrolled in every activity imaginable. Many parents felt pressure to keep up,even
when it left them extremely tired.
Now,a different parenting style is grabbing attention online.Known as the "Beta Mom",this
approach pushes back against the pressure to be perfect.Instead of trying to reach impossible
goals,Beta Moms focus on raising capable kids while protecting their own well-being.
Many mothers spent years trying to meet expectations that kept growing larger. They
were expected to excel at work, maintain a well-organized home, provide endless enrichment
opportunities, and stay emotionally available at all times. That level of pressure created
widespread burnout. The Beta Mom approach offers an escape from that cycle.
If a child gets bored,a Beta Mom may resist the urge to provide entertainment immediately. She
understands that boredom can spark()creativity.Children often discover new interests
when they have time and space to figure things out for themselves.
The same mindset applies to activities and commitments.Rather than filling every
afternoon with lessons and practices,Beta Moms often allow more downtime. They recognize
that overscheduling can create stress for both parents and children.
This approach also changes how mistakes are handled.A forgotten homework assignment
or a missed deadline becomes a learning opportunity rather than a family crisis.Children
experience results and develop responsibility.
Supporters believe the Beta Mom approach helps children build confidence and resilience
()When kids are allowed to handle challenges independently, they gain problem-solving
skills that cannot be taught through lectures alone.Similarly, children also learn that failure
is a normal part of life. They discover how to recover from mistakes, adjust their plans, and
keep moving forward. Those experiences often strengthen emotional resilience over time.
28.Why is the new parenting style popular with moms?
A.It allows them to share life online.B.It pushes their kids to achieve more.
C.It offers a guide to raising successful kids.D.It relieves them of the pressure to be perfect.

29.What will a Beta Mom do when her children feel bored?
A.Play with them immediately.
B.Leave them alone for some time.
C.Keep asking what they want to do.
D.Arrange something creative for them
30.What does the underlined word "downtime"in paragraph 5 probably mean?
A.Busy schedules.
B.Time for mistakes.
C.Time for relaxation
D.High-energy moments.
31.What does the last paragraph focus on about the Beta Mom approach?
A.The benefits it can bring to children.
B.Positive and negative comments on it.
C.How it is applied in different schools.D.The actionable steps to carrying it out

Mangroves()are among the most effective natural systems for capturing and
storing carbon, but new research suggests that rising sea levels could significantly reduce that
benefit and may even cause these coastal forests to release carbon in the future.
Made up of salt-tolerant plants that grow well along coastlines, mangroves account for
less than 1%of Earth's surface.Despite their relatively small footprint, they hold around
15%of all carbon stored in the ocean, with most of that carbon locked away in the soils
beneath them.Because of this ability, mangroves play an important role in efforts to slow
climate change.
Earlier studies have suggested that higher sea levels might actually increase carbon
storage in mangrove ecosystems. However, new findings indicate the overall picture may be
far more complex.
Researchers led by the University of Exeter, working with collaborators in Colombia and
the United States, created a new modeling approach to explore how rising seas could affect
carbon storage across whole mangrove forests rather than at individual locations. They found
that while some areas may temporarily capture more carbon as sea levels rise, the overall
amount of carbon stored across entire mangrove forests is expected to become smaller over the
next century.
"Mangrove plants are highly specialized, and they require a certain duration of flooding
with each tide(),"explained Luisa Fernanda Gomez Vargas from the University of Exeter.
"If this period is longer than expected,a location will no longer be suitable.Mangroves will
die back. The death of the plants and erosion()of carbon-rich soils can turn mangroves
from a carbon sink (storing carbon)into a source (releasing it)."
Dr.Barend van Maanen, who leads the mangrove and carbon project at Exeter, said,
"Mangroves face an uncertain future due to climate change and other human impacts on rivers
and coasts. Our findings highlight that understanding the coastal landscape as a whole is very
important when predicting how mangroves might respond to climate change, and how we can
help them survive..”
32.What can be known about mangroves from paragraph 2?
A.They help to fight climate change.
B.They are very common worldwide.
C.They are struggling along coastlines.
D.They release a large amount of carbon.
33.What does Luisa Fernanda Gomez Vargas intend to do in her statement?
A.Offer advice.
B.Make an explanation.
C.Show a new research method.
D.Question the previous research.
34.What can the new research contribute to in Dr.Barend van Maanen's opinion?
A.Protecting mangroves.
B.Preventing natural disasters.
C.Advertising coastline tourism.
D.Relocating residents quickly
35.What is the best title for the text?
A.Mangroves Are in Great Danger
B.Rising Seas:the Ultimate Criminal?
C.Mangroves:A Carbon Sink or Source?
D.Rising Seas Are Threatening Mangroves

Lilly was born a healthy baby and developed normally like any other child. But around
age two,she stopped using words she had learned and began having balance problems.
Although her parents knew something was wrong, they spent two difficult years on extensive
testing before finally receiving a diagnosis()through a blood test.From then on,Lilly
lived with Rett Syndrome,a rare genetic neurological disorder that primarily affects girls and
often causes them to lose motor skills.Lilly always had to use a wheelchair to get around.
Despite the challenges,Lilly's parents never gave up on her. They learned to celebrate
small things-a smile,a kiss,or a reaction of some kind.Through all the difficulties,one
thing remained unchanged:Oliver,a boy who had been Lilly's friend since birth. He never
treated her differently. He visited her, talked to her,and stayed by her side through the years.
Now,Lilly was fifteen.Her school announced a special prom()night at a local

church. When Lilly heard the news, her eyes lit up with excitement. She had always dreamed
of attending a prom like other girls. But soon, her excitement was replaced by worry. How
could she possibly go?She couldn't walk steadily().Her parents,Jaime and Brooks,
shared her concern. They wanted so badly for Lilly to have this normal teenage experience,
but it seemed a big challenge.Jaime,Lilly's mother, wondered if they should give up the idea.
