Jiang Shumei wasn’t educated as a child, learning her first Chinese character at the age of 60. Now, the 87-year-old grandmother is the proud author of six books. She learned her first character in 1996, after her husband died in a car accident, when her daughter Zhang Ailing suggested that she learn to read to take her mind off the loneliness and sorrow.
Zhang says that her mother had her own way of learning. Whenever she came across characters she didn’t know at bus stops or shop signs, she found someone to ask. Once Jiang had learned enough characters, Zhang started giving her books to read. Enjoying the books, Jiang told her daughter that she wanted to write down her own stories to share.
She first put pen to paper in 2012, at the age of 75. It was not easy. Sometimes, completing a single sentence could take a day. Jiang usually started writing at 3 or 4 am, and revised the pieces several times until she was satisfied.
Zhang began publishing her mother’s stories on social media platforms in 2013. When Zhang and her mother drew the attention of Zhang’s writer friends, the pair made a decision to publish them. The first book, Time of Trouble, Time of Poverty, was published later that year, and proved to be a success. Some critics even praised it as the “live history of a nation plagued by tough times”. The book earned Jiang a lot of fans and sympathy.
So far, the elderly woman has published six books, totaling more than 600, 000characters in length. She lives a healthy life, exercising every day, drinking milk and soy milk, as well as having regular exercise. “If I could live as long as 130, would you still say that it is too late for me to start after 60?” she asks, jokingly.

We know that reading is good for children and for adults as well. Now a new study suggests that just being around books has its benefits — even if you don’t read them a lot. A team of researchers in Australia finds that growing up in a home with a sizable library improves literacy, number sense and even technological knowledge in later life.
The researchers were interested in what is called the “Radiation Effect”. “Radiation Effect” is a situation where children grow up around books, even though they don’t read them as much as their parents would like them to. But somehow books benefit them.
Joanna Sikora, a sociologist at the Australian National University, and her colleagues studied data collected between 2011 and 2015. The survey tested more than 160,000 adults from 31 different societies, and it included a question about how many books testers had in their homes during adolescence (青春期的).
“We found that people who grew up around books had better literacy, numeracy and digital problem-solving skills than people who had fewer books growing up but had similar education levels, similar jobs and even similar adult habits.” In fact, teens who only made it through high school but were raised in a bookish environment were successful as well in adulthood as college graduates who grew up in a house lacking books.
“So if we grow up in a house, in a home where parents enjoy books, where books are given as birthday presents and cherished and valued, this is something that becomes a part of our identity and gives us this lifelong influence to improve our reading and writing ability.” said Sikora.
So keep those shelves filled with books. Your kids will not only be grateful, they’ll be more likely to be able to spell grateful correctly as well.
8. Which is the benefit for children being around books?
A. They will work with numbers well. B. They will have a big library at home.
C. They will fall in love with literature. D. They will form the habit of reading a lot.
9. The “Radiation Effect” might work for_________.
A. a girl who doesn't read books B. a boy who receives higher education
C. a girl who visits bookstores a lot D. a boy who grows up without books
10. What do we know from paragraph 4?
A. College graduates raised without books are surely not successful.
B. Teens, after graduating from high schools, can find better jobs.
C. People raised in a bookish environment can solve real-life problems easily.
D. Children being around books can be successful in adulthood.
11. What are parents advised to do?
A. To have a big collection of books. B. To keep shelves filled with dictionaries.
C. To enjoy writing books for children. D. To make kids spell grateful correctly.
D
Clothing rental is a hot new industry and retailers (零售商) are demanding to get on board in hopes of attracting green shopper.
But is renting fashion actually more environmentally-friendly than buying it, and if so, how much more? Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated (调查) this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems.
Take shipping, for example, which has to go two ways if an item is rented — receiving and returning. Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.
She writes, ''An item ordered online and then returned can send out 20 kilograms of carbon each way, and increases up to 50 kilograms for rush shipping. By comparison, the carbon impact of a pair of jeans purchased from a physical store and washed and worn at home is 33.4 kilograms, according to a 2015 study by Levi's.''
Then there's the burden of washing, which has to happen for every item when it's returned, regardless of whether or not it was worn. For most rental services, this usually means dry cleaning, a high impact and polluting process. All the rental services that Cline looked into have replaced perchloroethylene (氯乙烯), a carcinogenic (致癌的) air pollutant, still used by 70 percent of US dry cleaners, with alternatives, although these aren't great either.
Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible. There's something called ''share washing'' that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, advertised as ''a way to share rides and limit ear ownership.'' and yet ''it has been proven to discourage walking, bicycling, and public transportation use.''
Renting clothes is still preferable to buying them cheap and throwing them in the dustbin after a few wears, but we shouldn't let the availability of these services make us too satisfied. There's an even better step — that's wearing what is already in the closet.
12. What is Elizabeth Cline's attitude toward clothing rental?
A. Approving. B. Unfavorable.
C. Objective. D. Enthusiastic.
13. The Uber example in Paragraph 6 indicates that .
A. rental services are on the rise
B. clothing rental will be as successful as Uber
C. renting clothes might waste more than expected
D. renting clothes might make people lose interest in fast fashion
14. The author suggests that we should .
A. give up renting any clothing
B. purchase inexpensive clothes
C. rent clothes rather than buy them
D. make full use of clothes we've possessed
15. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Clothing rental is a new fashion.
B. Clothing rental is retailers' preference.
C. Renting clothes is not that eco-friendly.
D. Renting-clothes business is in a dilemma.

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling a person gets when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren't invited or they just didn't feel like going. ___16___ This belief, in turn, can create nervousness and a sense of inferiority. FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they're often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing thinking. It's a mental exercise aimed at helping them look at situations differently. ___17___
Pay attention to negative thoughts and replace them with positive ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to put down their negative thoughts and feelings in a diary. ___18___ Then, they remind themselves to try to see things from a different angle and in an active way.
___19___Encourage teens to understand that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. Therefore, it is natural that there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they're necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural solution to FOMO. But just switching the phone off does not erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ___20___ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative results of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
D. Here are some tips on how teens can start to reshape their thought.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to think that they are not socially important.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they're not in social media at all.
G. This allows them to see how often they're feeling terrible about themselves.

His father was sitting in the living room, reading the newspaper, while his mother was busy in the kitchen preparing dinner. Afraid to face their disappointed looks, yet knowing he should be honest, Li Ming hesitated. Just then, his mother called him to help set the table.
As they sat down for dinner, the atmosphere was tense. Li Ming’s father asked about his day, and Li Ming knew he couldn’t avoid the topic any longer. “Dad, Mom, I have something to tell you,” he said, his voice trembling. “I failed the exam.” The room fell silent. His father’s face turned strict, and his mother looked worried. “How could this happen?” his father demanded. “You’ve been studying so hard.”
Li Ming felt a wave of shame and frustration. He tried to explain, but his words were chaotic (混乱的). “I… I don’t know.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. D 15. C

根据第二段的Journalist and author Elizabeth Cline investigated (调查) this question and concluded that it's not as sustainable as it seems.(记者兼作者Elizabeth Cline调查了这个问题,她总结服装租赁似乎没有看起来那么可持续)可推测,Elizabeth Cline不赞成服装租赁。B. Unfavorable.(不赞成的)符合以上说法,故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段的There's something called ''share washing'' that makes people waste more precisely because a product or service is shared and thus is regarded as more eco-friendly. Uber is one example of this, C. renting clothes might waste more than expected(服装租赁可能会造成比想象中更多的浪费)符合以上说法,故选C项。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段的There's an even better step — that's wearing what is already in the closet.( 这儿有一个更好的办法——即穿已经在衣柜里的衣服)可推测,作者建议我们穿自己已经拥有的衣服。D. make full use of clothes we've possessed(充分利用我们已经拥有的衣服)符合以上说法,故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章的主要内容,尤其是第三段的Cline writes that consumer transportation has the second largest carbon footprint of our collective fashion habit after manufacturing.(克莱因写道,消费者的交通工具的碳足迹仅次于制造业),第五段的Then there's the burden of washing(此外,还有洗涤的负担)和第六段的Lastly, Cline fears that rental services will increase our appetite for fast fashion, simply because it's so easily accessible. (最后,Cline担心租赁服务会增加我们对快速时尚的兴趣,因为它很容易获得)可知,本文主要讲述衣服租赁并不是人们所说的那样环保 C. Renting clothes is not that eco-friendly.(服装租赁没有那么环保)符合以上说法,故选C项。

A Cold Winter Evening
On a cold winter evening, Li Ming walked home with heavy steps, his heart heavy with the news of failing an important exam at school.
I thought I was prepared, but it was really difficult.” His mother put a hand on his arm, trying to comfort him. “We need to figure out what went wrong and how we can help you improve,” she said, her tone softer than his father’s.

Then, his father got up and walked to Li Ming’s room. He took out all of Li Ming’s study materials and started to analyze where Li Ming might have made mistakes. Then Li Ming’s mother joined him.
The family gathered around the table, and they talked openly. His father pointed out some of Li Ming’s study method problems. His mother shared her own learning experiences in her youth and encouraged him to adjust his study method and never give up. Li Ming listened carefully and felt a warm current in his heart. He realized that with his family’s support, he could face difficulties bravely and do better in the next exam. Li Ming knew his parents loved and cared for him. Now he had more confidence and made up his mind to study harder in the future.
