This summer vacation, I took part in the final of the 4th Stories of China Retold in English Challenge in Beijing. Looking back on my six months of preparation and the speech contest itself, I found this activity both demanding and meaningful.
Several months ago, my English teacher Mr. Lu introduced the contest to our class, saying it was a great opportunity to let more foreign friends know about real China. All at once, a sense of excitement washed over me, and I couldn’t wait to participate.
In my speech, I shared stories reflecting Chinese values such as unity and patriotism (爱国主义), which resonate with people across the globe. I told the touching story of ordinary people’s unity during a snowstorm at the time of China’s annual Spring Festival travel rush in 2024 and shared the extraordinary journey home of scientist Qian Xuesen to reflect patriotism.
The road to glory was never plain sailing, and I have faced many challenges along the way. The first was to overcome my fear of public speaking. In an effort to aid my progress, Mr. Lu not only encouraged me to make short presentations during his lessons but also advised me to watch native speakers’ videos to imitate their tone and pronunciation. Another challenge was to learn how to answer questions on the spot, which requires a clear understanding, quick thinking and correct responses. During the final, I misunderstood a question and my answer missed the point. It is obvious that I need to improve my ability to respond properly in public.
Despite all these challenges, I greatly appreciate this experience as it gives me a chance to introduce China to the world in English. I know my hard work has paid off.
24. What is the author’s purpose of participating in the contest?
A. To gain valuable competition experience. B. To follow his teacher’s practical suggestion.
C. To make progress in oral English expression. D. To spread Chinese stories and cultural values.
25. What does the underlined phrase “resonate with” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Belong to. B. Appeal to. C. Contribute to. D. Target to.
26. What can be inferred from the author’s contest experience?
A. He realized his own shortcomings in the contest.
B. He thought his long-term preparation was of no use.
C. Small mistakes greatly weakened his self-confidence.
D. A few careless mistakes largely affected his final performance.
27. How does the author feel about the contest?
A. It is easy and full of fun. B. It is tiring and time-wasting.
C. It is difficult and meaningless. D. It is challenging but rewarding.
C
Wild animals are an essential part of the earth’s natural ecosystem. They help maintain ecological balance, promote plant growth, and support the healthy operation of forests, wetlands and grasslands. However, more and more wildlife species are facing population decline and even extinction, and continuous human disturbance has led to this severe ecological problem.
Among all human-related threats, habitat loss is still the most destructive factor affecting wild animals. As human population expands, large areas of wild land are cleared to build residential communities, transportation roads and industrial farms. This ongoing development leaves them with limited resources to find food, hide from enemies and raise their young. Besides, illegal hunting and cross-border wildlife trading further threaten endangered species. Many wild animals are killed illegally for their fur, bones or valuable body parts. Worse still, industrial waste and plastic pollution have polluted rivers and soil, breaking wildlife’s living chains quietly.
In recent years, global environmental organizations and local governments have paid increasing attention to wildlife protection. Many countries have built large-scale nature reserves to provide safe and stable homes for endangered animals. Strict legal rules have been carried out to punish illegal hunting and wildlife product trading. In addition, widespread public education has greatly improved people’s awareness of environmental protection. More ordinary people are willing to choose low-carbon lifestyle and refuse to consume products connected with wild animals.
Protecting wildlife is far more than simply saving rare animals. It is a key way to protect the entire natural ecosystem and guarantee human sustainable development. No single group or country can complete this huge task alone. Only through long-term joint efforts of governments, organizations and every individual can we allow wild animals to live safely on our planet.
28. What’s the main reason of wildlife extinction?
A. Natural disasters. B. Human activities. C. Lack of plants. D. Water pollution.
29. What problem does the population growth cause?
A. Serious river flooding. B. Fewer kinds of wild plants.
C. Less living space for wildlife. D. More cross-border animal trade.
30. How do governments help endangered wildlife?
A. They force people to live low-carbon lives. B. They limit the expansion of human population.
C. They ban all industrial development near wild lands. D. They set up nature reserves and carry out strict laws.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Full Overview of Wildlife Protection. B. Major Causes of Wildlife Habitat Loss.
C. Great Values of Human-wildlife Balance. D. Effective Ways to Ban Illegal Wildlife Trade.
D
Spider silk is an excellent natural material. Lighter yet stronger than steel, it is applied to protective fabrics (布料,织物) and space suits. But mass production is a big challenge. Traditional large-scale spider farming can never work for practical use.
Scientists have long attempted to produce spider silk through biological methods. They tried to put complete spider silk genes into bacteria to create the tough material, yet all early attempts ended in failure. The main reason is that bacteria will naturally refuse complete foreign genes from spiders, blocking the whole production process. Although spider silk has superior physical qualities, their limited natural output prevents their wide application in industry and daily life.
To break this technical barrier, researchers from Washington University in St. Louis came up with a creative solution. Instead of using the whole set of spider genes, they split the genes into tiny fragments. Once placed in bacteria, these gene pieces regained normal functions, which finally enables common bacteria to produce real spider silk.
In the latest experiment, researchers produced two grams of pure spider silk from each liter of genetically modified bacteria. Test results confirmed that the man-made silk is as strong and durable as natural spider silk. Even so, the current production is still too low for large-scale commercial production, though the achievement is a major breakthrough in this field.
Scientists are optimistic about the technology. Improved techniques will help produce high-quality artificial spider silk in large quantities. The strong material can be used for clothing and industrial equipment. Moreover, NASA is interested in applying this technology to space missions to supply materials for spacecraft.
32. Why did the early attempts fail to make spider silk?
A. Their application were limited. B. Bacteria reject complete spider genes.
C. It’s hard to collect wild spider silk. D. Wrong bacteria have been chosen for tests.
33. What do we know about the new way of producing spider silk?
A. New bacteria are created to accept spider genes.
B. Complete spider genes are directly put into bacteria.
C. Split gene pieces function properly inside bacterial cells.
D. New spider genes are generated to produce real spider silk
34. Which of the following is true about the man-made spider silk?
A. It’s mass-produced for commerce. B. It’s mass-produced from natural spiders.
C. It has the same quality as natural spider silk. D. Two liters of bacteria produced one gram of silk.
35. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Scientists doubt the future of the technology.
B. NASA has already used the silk in space tasks.
C. The silk can only be used for industrial equipment.
D. The technology will have wider application in the future.

I had been feeling upset ever since my family moved to a small town in Oregon last year. Leaving behind my old friends and all the familiar places around me made me feel lonely every single day. My mom worked full-time at a local cafe to cover our daily costs, so she was always very tired after a long day’s work. We rarely had a chance to sit down and chat peacefully at home, and I gradually felt she never truly understood my true feelings.
Things came to a head one Saturday afternoon. We argued heatedly because I complained she cared far more about work than me. Hurt by my unkind words, Mom fell silent and walked away without saying a single word. For the whole day, we stayed away from each other and never talked. I shut myself in my bedroom, stuck to my phone the whole time and refused to come out to join her for meals.
At nearly eleven o’clock that night, I woke up with a dry throat and headed downstairs for some water. To my surprise, the kitchen light was still on. Glancing through the half-open door, I spotted Mom sitting alone at the table. She was looking through my old photo album, with tears rolling down her cheeks quietly. Beside her lay a plate of freshly baked cookies, my favorite snack. A half-finished note also caught my eye: “I wish I could take away your sadness... Please know my love is always with you.” A wave of regret swept over me at once. I finally saw how selfish and unthankful I had been during all these days.

【原文】We’re going to have a look today at the original art in Australia. It is one of the oldest arts in the world. As long as native people have been living in Australia, they’ve been creating different types of art. Let’s look at some examples of ancient art. It includes things like rock paintings, tree paintings... Even some sand drawings have been found. Then there’s the whole area of body art, which is so important for ceremonies. The oldest art examples today are the rock paintings. Obviously, rock lasts longer than other materials, so the art has been preserved. In fact, most of this work that has been found is inside caves, largely because it hasn’t been destroyed by the weather, while the paintings on outside rock surfaces have often been washed away over the years. As the ancient people didn’t have a written language, the key purpose of much of this rock art was storytelling, which has had a great significance for younger generations. Now let’s move on to look at the different styles of the rock paintings...

【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. D

【答案】28. B 29. C 30. D 31. A

【答案】32. B 33. C 34. C 35. D

【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Instead of using the whole set of spider genes, they split the genes into tiny fragments. Once placed in bacteria, these gene pieces regained normal functions, which finally enables common bacteria to produce real spider silk.(他们没有使用整套蜘蛛基因,而是将基因分割成微小片段。这些基因片段被放入细菌后恢复了正常功能,最终让普通细菌能够产出真正的蜘蛛丝。)”可知,分割后的基因片段在细菌细胞内可正常发挥作用。

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150词左右;
2. 开头已给出,请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
I stood outside the door, my eyes filled with tears.

Paragraph 2:
From that night on, our life slowly changed for the better.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
I stood outside the door, my eyes filled with tears. Regret flooded my mind the moment I saw her sad face. I stepped inside immediately and made a heartfelt apology for my thoughtless complaints. I admitted I had long ignored all her painstaking efforts and silent selfless love over these months. Deeply moved, Mom wiped away her tears and gave me a warm tight hug. She said she worked tirelessly just to give me a better life and always put my feelings first.
From that night on, our life slowly changed for the better. We cast aside cold silence and started to share our joys and worries regularly. Whenever we have free time, we chat about daily little things or make tasty snacks together happily. I gradually adapted to the brand-new life and completely stopped complaining. It dawned on me that moving to a new place was truly challenging for both of us. I will cherish this precious bond and accompany my mom with all my heart forever.
Another possible version:
I stood outside the door, my eyes filled with tears. The moment I spotted Mom’s sad look, my anger disappeared at once. I walked indoors and sincerely apologized for my cruel remarks and selfishness over the past months. I admitted I had ignored her constant efforts and boundless love too long. My mom was overwhelmed with emotion. She dried her tears and held me in a tender, firm hug. She explained she worked endlessly only to provide a better life for me, and my feelings were always her top priority.
From that night on, our life slowly changed for the better. We broke our cold silence and started talking about our joys and troubles frequently. In our free time, we chatted or made delicious snacks together. Gradually, I adapted to the new life and never complained again. I realized constant complaints would only burden us both. Now I value this precious mother-daughter bond. I believe our future days will be filled with warmth and mutual comfort.
